USM's Morgan Alley Named LEC Tennis Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Morgan Alley (Hancock, Maine/Mt. Desert Island
HS) of the University of Southern Mane women's tennis team has been the Little
East Conference Rookie of the Week for her play during the period of September
8-14. The announcement was made Monday afternoon by the Little East office.
Alley picked up a crucial victory at number three singles in the Huskies' 6-3
win over Little East rival Plymouth State University on Saturday. She defeated
Kate Olsen 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4 to help USM won five of the six singles matches.
"For a freshman, she showed a lot of poise and character on the court after
dropping the second set. She played like an upper classman in the decisive third
set, serving out the match after being down a break (2-4)," commented veteran
head coach Wayne St. Peter.
Earlier in the week, Alley teamed with junior Megan Allyn (Cumberland, Maine)
to edge Julie Castle and Bridgett Paulsen of Endicott College in a tiebreaker, 9-8
(12-10) for one of USM's two wins in a 7-2 loss at the hands of the Gulls.
Including the season-opening Carabins Invitational Tournament in Montreal,
Alley has compiled a 2-3 mark in singles action, and teamed with Allyn for a 1-3
record in doubles play.
Southern Maine, 1-1 in dual matches this fall, travel to Lewiston, Maine,
tomorrow to battle Bates College. USM returns home Saturday to host Little East
foe, the University of Massachusetts Boston.

After dropping her first singles match in the three-day tournament, Welch
came back in the consolation bracket to beat sophomore teammate Chelsea Gray
(Madison, Maine) in a super tiebreaker (first to 10 winning by two), 12-10, after
the two split a pair of sets (3-6, 6-4). In the consolation final, Welch dropped
the opening set to Christine Lawrence of McGill University, 6-1, before taking the
second set 6-4 to force another super tiebreaker. Down 9-4 in the tiebreaker,
Welch fought her way back to finally prevail 15-13.
In doubles play, Welch and Gray teamed to go 2-2, losing in the first round
to the eventual champions from the University of Montreal, 8-6. They defeated a
team from McGill 8-0 before disposing of USM teammates Megan Allyn (Cumberland,
Maine) and Morgan Alley (Hancock, Maine) 8-3 to reach the consolation final where
they dropped a heartbreaker to another team from McGill, 9-7.
"Katie never gives up. That's just the way she plays," commented head coach
Wayne St. Peter. "In the consolation final, she was down 9-4 in the super
tiebreaker and never once was she afraid to make a mistake. She played 100% on
every point and was able to come back and win."
The Huskies, the defending Little East Conference champions, open their dual
match season this Wednesday (September 10) when they travel to Beverly, Mass., to
play Endicott College at 3:30 p.m. USM opens its conference regular season
schedule on Saturday hosting Plymouth State College at 2:00 p.m.
