USM's Emily Jose and Katie Welch Earn Conference Honors

GORHAM, Maine: University of Southern Maine junior Emily Jose (Caribou,
Maine) earned the Little East Conference Player of the Week award, and freshman
Katie Welch (Calais, Maine) was selected the league's Rookie of the Week, after
helping the women's tennis team register a perfect 3-0 week.
Jose, who played number-one singles in all three matches and split time
between number-one and number-two doubles, posted a 3-0 singles mark and a 2-1
doubles ledger, while Welch was 3-0 at each number-two singles and number-three
doubles. Their efforts helped the Huskies defeat Colby-Sawyer College (6-3),
Salem State College (6-3), and UMass Dartmouth (7-2). After beginning the year
at 1-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference, the Huskies currently stand at 5-6
overall and 3-2 in the league.
In last week's opening match against Colby-Sawyer, Southern Maine faced a
2-1 deficit following the doubles play. However, Jose evened the affair at 2-2
by pulling out a 7-5, 7-6 (4) triumph at number-one singles. Welch followed with
a straight-set victory at number-two singles to provide the Huskies with the
lead for good.
Jose concluded her singles action on the week, by adding a 6-1, 6-1
triumph against Salem State, and a 6-3, 6-2 decision at UMass Dartmouth. In
doubles play, she notched an 8-4 win at Salem State and an 8-1 triumph at UMass
Dartmouth. Overall, she was 32-18 in singles games and 19-13 in doubles games.
Welch enjoyed comparable success during the remainder of the week,
registering a 6-0, 6-2 triumph at Salem State and a 6-0, 6-1 victory at UMass
Dartmouth. In doubles action, she recorded an 8-2 win at Salem State and an 8-3
triumph at UMass Dartmouth. She finished the week with a record of 30-8 in
singles play and 24-8 in doubles action.
Southern Maine will conclude the fall portion of its 2002-03 campaign at
this weekend's five-team Little East Conference Tournament, hosted by UMass
Boston. A year ago, the Huskies finished third behind champion Rhode Island
College and runner-up UMass Boston. The Huskies lone conference title in the
eight-year history of the event came in 2000.

Women's Tennis Captains Named at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine: University of Southern Maine seniors April Cohen
(Cumberland, Maine) and Sarah McLean (Portsmouth, R.I.) will be joined by junior
Emily Jose (Caribou, Maine) to serve as co-captains for the 2002 women's tennis
team.
"Cohen, Jose and McLean are our most experienced players, and the
leadership they provide will be essential to our overall success this year,"
said eighth-year head coach Wayne St. Peter. "We will have six new faces on our
roster, and it will be up to our captains to help the younger players make a
successful transition to the college game."
After seeing limited action in the number-six singles position, Jose made
the leap to the upper echelons of the ladder a year ago, and is expected to
solidify the number-one position this year. In doubles action, Jose is again
expected to pair with McLean, providing the Huskies with a formidable number-one
tandem. The duo advanced to the semifinals of last year's LEC Championships.
McLean, who is also a standout member of the University's softball team,
should see considerable time in the middle of the team's ladder. Over the past
two years she has won 16 singles matches and nine doubles contests.
As a sophomore, Cohen made but three competitive appearances. However,
she saw regular playing time at the fifth and sixth singles position a year ago.
As a senior captain, she should advance higher up the ladder, providing the
young Huskies with a strong veteran presence at the top half of the line up.
This trio will direct the Huskies through a competitive fall campaign,
which concludes at the Little East Conference Tournament (Oct. 11-12). Southern
Maine has enjoyed considerable success at the league championships, winning the
title in 2000, while finishing second in 1999, and third in 2001.
After beginning the year by hosting and placing a respectable third at the
USM Invitational, the Huskies suffered a home setback to a competitive Endicott
College contingent. Southern Maine will look to register its first win of the
campaign, when it travels to Bowdoin College (Sept. 11) and UMass Boston (Sept.
14). Following a home match with Bates (Sept. 18), the Huskies will travel to
Rhode Island College (Sept. 20) and Plymouth State (Sept. 25), before concluding
the opening month with a home match against Western Connecticut. (Sept. 28).
Southern Maine opens the month of October by hosting Colby-Sawyer (Oct.
1), before travelling to Salem State (Oct. 3) and UMass Dartmouth (Oct. 5). The
Huskies close out the regular -season by hosting Colby (Oct. 8).
