Huskies Finish Third at Grass Courts Doubles Tourney
NEWPORT, R.I. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies women's tennis
team finished third among five teams competing in the rain-delayed 17th annual
Salve Regina University Women's Doubles Grass Court Tournament held at the
Tennis Hall of Fame. The tournament was originally scheduled for Saturday, but
was moved to Sunday due to rain Friday night and Saturday morning.
USM, the defending champion, earned 16 points to finish behind Salve
Regina (28 points) and Bryant College (26 points. Rounding out the field were
the Salve Regina Alumni (12 points) and Bridgewater State College.
The Huskies were led by sophomore Emily Jose (Caribou, Maine) and junior
Sarah McLean (Portsmouth, R.I.) who combined to finish runner-up in the first
flight. Freshman Ashley Soucie (Caribou, Maine) and junior Jewel Iannetta
(Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) also finished second in the third flight. Both teams
were 3-1 in their respective flights.
USM's other doubles combinations were senior April Cohen (South Portland,

Grass Court Doubles Tournament Postponed to Sunday
GORHAM, Maine -- The annual Salve Regina University Women's Grass Court
Doubles Tournament, which includes the University of Southern Maine Huskies, has
been postponed due to wet weather. The tournament, held at the Tennis Hall of
Fame in Newport, R.I., has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 23.
It is the second straight day that the Huskies have been beaten by the
weather. USM and Rhode Island College were underway in their Little East
Conference match on Friday when the weather suspended play with the Anchorwomen
leading 2-1. That match is tentatively scheduled to be resumed next Friday
(September 28) in Providence.
