Hathaway Named to NSCAA All-Star Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Ali Hathaway (Hampden, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine women's soccer team picked up another award this
week when she was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America
(NSCAA) All-New England Region third team.
This is the third straight year that USM has place at least one player on
the All-New England team. Defender Kelly Wilson made the team in both 1997 and
1998 while forward/midfielder Debbie Jandreau was on the 1997 team. All were
third team selections.
Hathaway helped lead the Huskies to a 9-9-0 overall record this season by
scoring 11 goals and 10 assists for 32 points in 16 games. Her 32 points broke
Jandreau's school record for points in a season, and the 10 assists smashed the
old record of seven assists set by Mandy King in 1995.
"Ali is very deserving of this honor," commented second-year head coach
Steve Quinones who has guided the Huskies to a 17-16-1 record. "She's a scoring
threat everytime she touches the ball and she created numerous opportunities for
her teammates. She is an outstanding leader on and off the field and I look
forward to having her back next fall."
The 5-foot-3 forward, who did not play soccer her first two years at USM
while concentrating on basketball, was named the Little East Conference Player
of the Year and to the first team all-conference squad last month. She plans to
return next fall to play soccer while finishing her degree.
In her two seasons playing soccer, Hathaway has scored 20 goals and 11
assists for 51 points.

Hathaway Named Little East Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Year
Four Huskies Named to All-Little East First Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Ali Hathaway (Hampden, Maine/Hampden
Academy) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's soccer team became
the second player in the history of the program to be named the Little East
Conference Player of the Year when the eight-school conference announced its
annual awards and all-star teams.
Conference commissioner Bill Moore made the announcement Wednesday
(November 17) following balloting by the conference's eight head coaches.
Hathaway also was one of four Huskies to be named to the conference's
first all-star team. Joining Hathaway on the elite 12-player squad were senior
back Leah Cloutier (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS), junior midfielder Stephanie
Forrest (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford, Conn.) and junior goalkeeper
Samantha Whitman (Saxtons River, Vt./Northfield Mt. Hermon). Hathaway and
Whitman are repeat members of the All-LEC first team while Cloutier moves up
from the last year's second team. This is the first time Forrest has been
honored.
Hathaway, who led the Huskies in scoring for the second straight season
with a school record 32 points, joins former standout Debbie Jandreau (1995-97)
as the only USM players to win LEC Player of the Year honors. Jandreau was the
conference's Player of the Year in 1995. The third leading scorer in the
conference, Hathaway scored 11 goals and had a school record 10 assists this
season.
"This is a well deserved award. Ali had a definite positive impact on our
team, and was a scoring threat in every game she played. Even though other
teams geared up to stop her, she still found ways to succeed," commented second-
year head coach Steve Quinones.
Cloutier emerged last year as one of the circuit's top defensive players,
and she played even better this fall. The middle back in the Huskies' three-
back set, she had her first career goal this season while starting all 18 games.
"Leah again showed that she was one of the best defenders in the
conference. She may not have the scoring stats, but her presence on the field
made us a better team," said Quinones.
Forrest came on strong this season to become a dominant player in the
midfield. She scored five goals and had five assists for a career-high 15
points in 18 games. She was the team's fourth leading scorer.
"Steph had a great year. Her work in the middle at the central midfield
position played a big part in our success this season. She scored some clutch
goals when we needed them," Quinones said.
Whitman, who was named the Most Outstanding Defensive Player in two
regular season tournaments this year, compiled a 1.56 goals against average
while making 106 saves. She had one shutout and shared in two others.
"(Whitman's) consistency and composure has led to her being named to this
team for the second straight season. She has set herself apart as one of the
best, if not the best, goalkeeper in the conference," added Quinones.
The Huskies finished the year 9-9-0 overall and 3-4-0 in the conference.

LEWISTON, Maine -- Senior forward Kate O'Malley (Deephaven, Minn./
Minnetonka HS) scored a pair of goals to lift the Bates College Bobcats to a 3-0
victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a women's college
soccer match at Lafayette St. Field Tuesday afternoon.
The victory improves the Bobcats' overall record to 8-5 with one match
remaining at Colby this Saturday. Southern Maine, playing its third match in
three days due to rescheduled matches, dropped its fifth straight match to
finish the season at 9-9-0. The nine wins are the most by a USM team in the
15-year history of the program.
O'Malley scored the only goal of the first half at 25:32 converting a pass
from junior back Molly Metcalfe (Walpole, Mass./Walpole HS) for her team-leading
eighth goal of the season. The goal made O'Malley the leading scorer in Bates'
women's soccer history, passing Bethany Maitland.
The Bobcats struck for a pair of goals 90 seconds apart early in the
second half to ice the match. Freshman Rachel Cochrane (Belfast, Maine/Mountain
View HS) shot floated over USM junior keeper Samantha Whitman (Saxtons River,
Vt./Northfield Mt. Hermon) at 48:45 to make it 2-0. O'Malley picked up her
second goal of the match at 50:15 knocking in a rebound from in front of the
net.
Whitman had seven saves for the Huskies before giving way to freshman
Ashley Newton (Fairfield, Conn./Wyoming [Ohio] HS) with 36 minutes left. Newton
made another seven saves.

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Freshman forward Christine O'Donnell (Salem,
Mass./Salem HS) scored all three goals as the Colby College White Mules defeated
the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-2, in a women's college
soccer match Monday afternoon. The game was originally scheduled for October

The win was the third straight for the White Mules who improve to 6-4-1
overall on the season. Colby has won the last eight matches between the two
schools, including the last four by a single goal.
The Huskies dropped their fourth consecutive match to slip to 9-8-0. Six
of the Huskies' eight losses this season have been by one goal. USM finishes
its regular season schedule Tuesday afternoon at Bates College.
O'Donnell had the only goal of the first half at 21:43, set up by senior
Stephanie Zegras (Bedford, N.Y./Westminster School). The White Mules, playing
with the wind in the first 45 minutes, held a wide edge in shots, but only
managed the one goal against USM's freshman goalie, Ashley Newton (Fairfield,
Conn./Wyoming [Ohio] HS).
Southern Maine struck back early in the second half as junior midfielder
Stephanie Forrest (East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford HS) scored her fourth goal
of the season 48:13.
O'Donnell gave the White Mules the lead for good at 53:27 scoring her
second goal of the match assisted by sophomore Katherine Egan (Westfield,
N.J./Westfield HS). O'Donnell's third goal, coming at 78:08, made it 3-1.
Zegras picked up her second assist on the goal.
Forrest pulled the Huskies within one with her second goal of the match at
81:53, but the Huskies were unable to get the equalizer over the final eight
minutes against Colby sophomore goalie Abby Kussell (Weston, Mass./Weston HS).

Conference women's soccer match Sunday afternoon at the USM soccer field.
The win extended the unbeaten Colonials' overall record to 15-0-2. They

Southern Maine, which dropped its third straight match, slipped to 9-7-0

The Huskies came back to take a 2-1 lead by the 20:04 mark on goals by

of the campaign.
The lead was short-lived as junior Caron Moritz (Massapequa Park,
N.Y./Farmingdale HS) tie the match with the first of her two goals at 24:16.
The game remained tied until the 69:38 mark when freshman Cherie Bailey
(Middletown, Conn./Middletown HS) broke the deadlock with her team-leading 14th
goal of the season. The game winning goal was her seventh of the season.

Panthers Win In Final Minute of Overtime
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior back Melanie Jones (Bradford, N.H./Kearsarge HS)
scored the decisive goal with just 53 seconds left in the second sudden death
overtime period to give the visiting Plymouth State College Panthers a 2-1
victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East
Conference women's soccer match Tuesday afternoon.
The win vaulted the Panthers, now 9-5-1 overall and 3-2-1 in the Little
East, ahead of the Huskies into the fourth and final playoff slot with one
conference game left to play. Plymouth State needs either a win or a tie
against the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on Saturday to clinch the
final playoff berth.
Southern Maine, now 9-6-0 overall and 3-3-0 in the Little East, would need
to beat Western Connecticut State University, and have Plymouth State lose to
move ahead of the Panthers for the final spot in the conference's first-ever
postseason championship tournament.
Jones one-timed a loose ball from about 25 yards out that USM junior
keeper Samantha Whitman (Saxtons River, Vt./Northfield Mt. Hermon) got a hand
on, but could not parry over the cross bar. The ball dropped under the cross
bar and across the goal line for Jones' first goal of the season.
The Huskies forced the game into extra time when, with less than five
minutes left in regulation time, senior forward Danielle DeGraw (Bristol,
Vt./Mt. Abraham Union) knocked a loose ball into the unprotected Panther goal
for her seventh goal of the season. Senior Ali Hathaway (Hampden, Maine/Hampden
Academy) beat PSC sophomore keeper Rebecca Kennedy (West Springfield, Mass./West
Springfield HS) to the ball in the right side of the penalty area and push a
pass across to the uncovered DeGraw.
The assist was Hathaway's 30th point of the season which breaks the USM
single season record for points. The old record was 29 points set by Debbie
Jandreau in 1995.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead at 65:40 when freshman Jodi Theriault's
(Portland, Maine/ Deering HS) innocent looking header off a corner kick found
its way past the Husky defense and Whitman for her sixth goal. Senior Tara
Dickson (Sussex, N.J./Vernon Township), who took the corner kick, was credited
with the assist.
Kennedy finished the match with nine saves while Whitman had seven saves.

Cloutier, Drury Named USM Women's Soccer Captains
Huskies Begin Preparation for Tournament Opener
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior midfielder Sarah Drury (Canton, Maine/Dirigo
H.S.) and third-year back Leah Cloutier (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat H.S.) have
been named captains for the 1999 University of Southern Maine women's soccer
team. Second-year head coach Steve Quinones made the announcement as the team
began preseason training camp Tuesday (August 24).
The Huskies open their 18-game schedule September 4-5 when they travel to
Oneonta, N.Y., to play in the Supervisor's Cup tournament. USM will play
Hartwick College in its first game, then tangle with SUNY Oneonta the second
day. The Huskies play their home opener September 8 when they host the
University of New England.
Cloutier and Drury were both second team All-Little East Conference
selections last season after helping the Huskies to an 8-7-1 overall mark, and a
4-3-0 mark (tied for fourth place) in the conference. The two will lead the
Huskies' efforts to secure a top four finish in the conference and a berth in
the four-team postseason championship tournament.
"Sarah is one of the hardest working players on our team. She is a good
team leader and she's done well holding down the center midfield position,"
commented Quinones.
"Leah is one of the more intelligent players I've had the chance to work
with. She reads the game very well and is able to cut off potential opposing
offensive threats before they can happen," added Quinones.
Drury, whose twin sister Alison is a field hockey tri-captain at USM and
younger sister Rachel is a member of the women's soccer team, was the Huskies'
second leading scorer last with three goals and three assists for nine points.
She had the game winning goal in the Huskies' 1-0 double overtime win against
St. Joseph's College.
Cloutier started all 16 games last season and helped the Huskies become
one of the Little East's toughest defensive teams. The Huskies allowed only 15
goals and posted eight shutouts last season.
The remainder of the Huskies' 1999 schedule includes: September 11-12, at
the Pepsi Cardinal Classic (at Plattsburgh, N.Y.); Sept. 15, at St. Joseph's
(2:00); Sept. 19, at Bowdoin (2:00); Sept. 23, at Salem State (7:00); Sept.
25, Keene State (2:30); and Sept. 30, at Rhode Island College (3:30).
Also October 2, UMass Boston (1:00); Oct. 7, UMaine Farmington (3:30);
Oct. 9, UMass Dartmouth (1:00); Oct. 14, at Colby (3:30); Oct. 16, at Eastern
Connecticut (1:00); Oct. 19, Plymouth State (3:30); Oct. 23, Western
