Issue #5
Well, the season is over and it ended with a tough 1-0 loss to Keene St. It was a windy day and we were playing against the wind for the first half. I was just hoping to get out of the half 0-0. We did that, led by some nice saves by Sam and some great team defending. We also had some serious scoring chances, one by Katie B., whose shot just sailed wide. We were also on the end of some dubious officiating, when Ali was taken down in the box by the Keene goalkeeper and no penalty was called.
Second half we went on the attack with the wind, but Keene got on the board first, on a goal by the Little East Conference Player of the Year, Amy Zomeck. We had our chances and we fought hard the whole way, but just couldn't put one in. It was a good game. It was also the last game for seniors Katie Blanchard, Kelly Wilson, and Pam Stevenson. Pam did not play in the Keene game, because she was injured the night before at training. But what a great year the three of them had. Freshman Jen Ireland also missed the game to be with her mother who is recovering from back surgery. We all hope you are feeling better Mrs. Ireland.
After the game, the parents threw a little tailgating party for us. As usual, the food and desserts were incredible!! The parents also presented me with a poem that is in a beautiful frame. Mrs. Whitman read the poem out loud and rumor has it, she was getting a little teary eyed. I cannot thank the parents enough for all they have done for us this season. We always had supporters at away matches and that makes a big difference. It is nice to have familiar faces cheering you on when you are on the road. I also want to thank them for being so supportive of the things that Amanda and I are trying to do here.
Little East Conference Honors and Statistics:
We did extremely well with post season honors. We placed six players on the All-Star Teams. Along with Keene St., that was the most from any one school.
First Team : Ali Hathaway, Kelly Wilson, and Samantha Whitman
Second Team : Pam Stevenson, Sarah Drury, and Leah Cloutier
I could not vote for any of them, so it goes to show how much respect the other coaches had for them and their season.
- Ali finished 10th in the conference in total points. She had 9 goals and 1 assist for 19 points.
- Sam finished 4th in goalkeeping with a 0.94 goals against average and 8 shut outs. She also had 163 saves. That is more saves then the top three gaolkeepers combined!!
- Out of our 7 conference games, we only conceded 5 goals. That is the fewest allowed out of all the teams.
SCHOOL RECORDS :
This was also a year in which we sent some records :
- We tied the most wins for a season : 8
- Least goals allowed in a season : 15
- Most assists in a game : 4 set by Katie Blanchard
Not a bad year.
* Please remember that we are currently updating the All Time Records and that we will start having them printed next week. A $10 donation would help a lot. *
TEAM DINNER :
We a looking at Sunday, November 22 as the date for the team dinner. I hope that this is a good date for everyone. We had to schedule a night that did not interfer with the girls that are playing hockey, basketball, and track. We have not decided whether it was going to be a sit-down dinner or potluck. Those that plan on attending, please call me so I can get a list started. Any ideas that you might have would also help. Like where to have it. I hope that some Alumni will be in attendence.
RECRUITS :
Because of the success of this season, we are anticipating a very good recruiting class. I have received interest from some quality players in the New England region. The future of USM women's soccer looks bright.
NEXT SEASON :
Our schedule is pretty much set for next season. We start out with a tournament in Oneonta, NY against Oneonta St., Hartwick College, and Wilmington College of Ohio. We will also be touring the National Soccer Hall of Fame. The date of this weekend is September 3-5. Anyone interested in going, call me and I can give you hotel information. The following weekend, we will be going to Plattsburgh, NY to play in a tournament with Plattsburgh St., Ithaca College, and Mass. College of Liberal Arts.
We have a 19 game schedule that is very competitive, but one that we can handle.
