USM Women's Soccer
Newsletter
August/September '98

Welcome to the first USM Women's Soccer Newsletter. The goal for this newsletter is to keep alumni, friends, family and boosters of Lady Husky soccer up to date and informed of all that it happening. First, we have a new coaching staff for the '98 season. My name is Steve Quinones and I am the head coach. Amanda Dunphy is the assistant coach. Our bio's are available on this website.

One of our goals with the program, is to have greater involvement with the alumni. A college program needs strong alumni support in order to be successful. That support can come in many ways : financially, recommending potential players, or just by showing up at the games.

Besides having an alumni game in the fall, Amanda and I would like to organize a weekend in the spring that is just for soccer alumnists. That weekend would include a game against the current team, followed by a BBQ, ending up with a night out for the alumni.

Any input from alumni would be greatly appreciated. Also, help finding missing alumni would be great. To help keep our alumni list current, I would like for all alumni to call me and verify their address and phone number and notify me of any address changes.

New Soccer Field
For those that don't know, we have a new soccer field and it is beautiful!! However, more work needs to be done. Plans call for more fencing, a formal entryway to a stadium-like environment, snack house with attached bathrooms, expanded and improved seating, and eventually, lighting. The construction of a storage shed/press box/filming tower is slated to be finished by the beginning of the season.

Contributions
We are always looking for donations to the program. The donations that come in are used to help offset equipment expenses, to help pay for our spring get together, and to purchase a gift for our graduating seniors. They will also be used to buy USM women's soccer T-shirts for the alumni. Any amount of money will be warmly accepted. Please make checks payable to : University of Southern Maine Athletics and send them to : Women's Soccer Office

Outlook for 1998
Preseason starts August 25th and we are expecting 38 players for camp. Quite a large number. We are only keeping 20. On August 29th, we have a practice game against UMass Lowell. Kick off is at 2pm. Hope to have some of you come watch and give input. Our schedule is tough. Especially in October when we play Western Conn., Plymouth St., and Keene St., all within two weeks of each other. Three of our opponents are currently ranked in the Div. III preseason poll. They are Plymouth St.(10), Bowdoin(20), and Western Conn.(22).

The 1998 Women's Soccer schedule is available online.

Returning players are led by seniors Kelly Wilson and Pam Stevenson. The next issue of the newsletter will include the final roster with bio's.

Official Records
We are currently trying to put together an USM Women's Soccer Records page. That will include all individual and team records, along with any honors that a player received. If you know your personal stats from your playing days, please call me. After it is completed, we will send everyone a copy. It will be updated every year.

Well, I hope this newsletter reached everyone. If anyone has any ideas on what future newsletters should contain, let me know. One idea is to do a "Where are they now" piece. What do you think? Our office number is (207) 780 -5328 and my E-mail address is quinones@usm.maine.edu

Hopefully I will see you soon.

Steve
