USM Names Steve Quinones Women's Soccer Coach
GORHAM, Maine -- Steve Quinones, a former women's soccer assistant coach at Franklin
Pierce College and presently playing for the Buffalo Blizzard of the National Professional Soccer
League (NPSL), has been named head coach for women's soccer at the University of Southern
Maine. Albert D. Bean, Director of Athletics at USM, made the announcement.
Quinones becomes the fourth head coach in the history of the program. He succeeds Mike
Steitzer who resigned at the end of the 1997 season after guiding the team for four years. Quinones
takes over a team that finished with a 5-9-3 overall record last fall.
"I'm very excited about this opportunity. I feel that my experiences at Franklin Pierce (College)
and as a professional player have prepared me to handle the program," commented Quinones
when reached by phone in Buffalo.
"We'll start by being over .500 and contending for the (Little East) conference championship.
To accomplish this, we'll have to be able to play with, and beat, the top teams," responded
Quinones when asked about his goals for the program.
"We're all very excited to have Steve joining the coaching staff at USM. His experiences as
an assistant coach and as a professional soccer player should prove invaluable in moving the
women's program to the next level," commented Bean.
"Steve possesses outstanding interpersonal skills, has a very positive approach and a
tremendous knowledge of the game of soccer. I feel certain that our program will flourish under
Steve's direction and look forward to the future of USM women's soccer," added Bean.
Quinones has spent the past two falls as an assistant coach at Franklin Pierce College
working primarily with the goalkeepers. He also assisted in player development, scouting and
recruiting. The Ravens have won the NCAA Division Two national championship the past four
seasons.
He began his coaching career right out of college as goalkeeper coach at Oneonta State
College, an NCAA Division One program in Oneonta, N.Y., where he was born and raised. He
moved on to serve as the men's goalkeepers coach at New Hampshire College for two years (1993-
94).
An All-American player during his collegiate playing career at Franklin Pierce, Quinones has
played five seasons for the Cape Cod Crusaders of the United Systems of Independent Soccer
Leagues (USISL). He has also played for the Tampa Bay Terror and the Buffalo Blizzard of the
NPSL during the winter.
Franklin Pierce posted a 57-24-5 record during Quinones four-year career at the Rindge,
N.H.-based school. He was named to the All-New England Collegiate Conference team and the
Division Two All-New England squads three straight years (1988-90). He still holds several school
records, including single season saves (136), career saves (429) and career goals against average
(1.0).

Steitzer Resigns as USM Women's Soccer Coach
GORHAM, Maine -- Mike Steitzer, head coach of the women's soccer program at the
University of Southern Maine for the past four seasons, has resigned from that position, effective as
of November 24. Albert D. Bean Jr., Director of Athletics, accepted Steitzer's resignation.
Steitzer cited the desire to pursue other soccer coaching opportunities and to spend more
time with his family among his reasons for resigning. Bean indicated that the search for a successor
would begin immediately.
"I've enjoyed working with some outstanding young athletes during my four years at USM,
and I feel these athletes have helped bring the program into a position of competitiveness resulting
in greater success against, and respect from, those teams that we played. I know that the athletes
will continue to build upon what we have tried to accomplish over the last four years, and will
continue to bring the program much success," said Steitzer.
"Mike has given our women's soccer program a measure of credibility in the Little East
Conference, and throughout the New England region, that had been lacking. He has left us with a
solid, competitive program upon which to continue building. On behalf of the USM Athletic
Department, I'd like to thank Mike for his contributions to the women's soccer program and wish him
well," commented Bean.
During his four years as head coach, Steitzer guided the Huskies to a 20-43-6 overall record.
Among the highlights during his four-year tenure as head coach were the Huskies posting a
winning record (1996) for the first time since 1989, USM's dramatic upset win over Little East
Conference rival Plymouth State College in 1996, winning the Wheaton College Invitational
Tournament in 1996, forward Debbie Jandreau being named Little East Conference Player of the
Year in 1995, the six players being named to the Little East first and second all-star teams in 1996,
Jandreau and back Kelly Wilson being named to the NSCAA/Umbro All-New England third team
(1997), the first time any USM players had been named to that prestigious squad and the
respectability the program has gained throughout New England.

Jandreau, Wilson Named to NSCAA All-New England Third Team
GORHAM, Maine -- For the first time in the 13-year history of the University of Southern
Maine women's soccer program, the Huskies have place a player on the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) All-New England Soccer Team sponsored by Umbro.
Named by the New England Region All-America Committee to the All-New England third
team were senior midfielder Debbie Jandreau (Madawaska, Maine) and senior back Kelly
Wilson (Sedgewick, Maine). They are the first USM players ever selected for this prestigious all-
star team. Both players had previously been named to the Little East Conference all-star first team.
"This is a great honor for both of these players, and for our program. Debbie and Kelly have
help give our program credibility throughout the New England women's soccer community,"
commented outgoing head coach Mike Steitzer, who is leaving the program after four seasons.
"Debbie set many scoring records here at USM and her selection to this all-star team caps an
outstanding career. She has been a major asset to the program.
"Kelly has been an outstanding leader for the team, both on and off the field. Her recognition
by the selection committee is a tribute to her hard work and outstanding efforts," said Steitzer about
his two standout players.
Jandreau led the Huskies in scoring for the third consecutive season tallying six goals and
two assists for 14 points. During her three-year career at USM after transferring from the University
of Maine Fort Kent where she played on the men's team her freshman season, Jandreau scored a
school record 25 goals, and her 59 points ties her with Cora Seaman for the school record for most
points. She also was the conference's Player of the Year in 1995.
Wilson, who has a year of eligibility remaining, but is undecided about returning, is one of the
conference's toughest defenders. Consistently matched up against the opposing team's top scorer,
Wilson was a major factor in the Huskies being one of the toughest team to be scored upon in the
conference (nine goals in seven league games). She had one goal during the season and it was
the game winner against St. Joseph's College.
The Huskies finished the 1997 season with a 5-9-3 overall record and 2-4-1 mark in the Little
East (fifth place).

Jandreau, Wilson Named to Little East All-Conference Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior midfielder Debbie Jandreau (Madawaska, Maine) and senior
back Kelly Wilson (Sedgewick, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine WOMEN'S SOCCER
team have been named to the Little East Conference all-star first team following a vote by the
league's eight head coaches.
Jandreau was named to the all-star first team for the third straight year while Wilson, a
second team honoree in 1996, was named to the elite team for the first time. They were the only
USM players named by the coaches to the all-conference first and second teams.
"Debbie Jandreau has set records across the board here at USM and her selection to the
Little East All-Conference first team caps an outstanding career. She has been a major asset to the
program. We hope her successes will encourage more northern Maine girls to come downstate and
play soccer at USM against some of the best teams in New England," commented head coach Mike
Steitzer.
"Kelly Wilson has been an outstanding leader for the team, both on and off the field. Her
recognition by the coaches is a tribute to her hard work and outstanding efforts. She has developed
into one of the best marking backs I have had the privilege to coach," said Steitzer.
The Huskies finished the 1997 season with a 5-9-3 overall record and 2-4-1 mark in the Little
East (fifth place).
