PROVIDENCE -- The Rhode Island College Anchorwomen received goals from
four different players en route to a 4-1 victory over the University of Southern
Maine Huskies Tuesday evening in a first round game of the 2006 Little East

Anchorwomen, who had lost four of their final five regular season matches,
improved to 14-6 overall. Southern Maine dropped its fifth straight to finish
the season 5-13-0.

MacKinnon (Exeter, R.I./Exeter-West Greenwich) lofted a shot into the top left
corner, converting an assist from senior midfielder Caitlin Gavin (Portsmouth,

Rhode Island College Downs Southern Maine 4-0
PROVIDENCE -- Junior midfielder Brittney Godbout (Cranston, R.I./Cranston
East) matched her season-high with five points, including a pair of goals, to
lead Rhode Island College to a 4-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine
in the Little East Conference women's soccer opener at the Rhode Island College
Soccer Field this afternoon.
The Anchorwomen raised their overall record to 5-1-0 and 1-0 -0 in the
conference circuit, while the Huskies fall to 1-5-0 and 0-1-0. Rhode Island
College is off to the program's best start since the 1999 squad started 6-0-0.
The Anchorwomen entered the scoring column in the 18th minute, when Godbout
ran onto a pass from junior striker Gina Calenda (Warren, R.I./Mt. Hope) along
the right flank. Godbout raced in alone and slipped the decisive goal into the
left corner of the cage. Although Rhode Island College was limited to just a
single marker in first half, the Anchorwomen controlled the offensive pressure,
recording a 23-6 advantage in shots.
Rhode Island College's constant barrage of shots finally paid dividends in
the second half, as the Anchorwomen sealed the contest with three tallies. The
combination of Godbout and Calenda accounted for Rhode Island College's second
goal in the 61st minute. It was Godbout's fourth score of the season, while
Calenda collected her third helper. First-year midfielder Christina Tavana
(Middletown, Conn.) netted her first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute, while
Gavin posted her first goal of the season in the 90th minute.
Between the pipes, sophomore goaltender Krissie Pyznynski (Bristol,
Conn./Bristol Eastern) stopped four shots to register her second shutout of the
season. Sophomore Cyndi Michaels (Wethersfield, Conn.) made 14 saves for the
Huskies. The Anchorwomen held the advantage in shots (36-17) and corner kicks

Stucki scored on a short one-time shot off a cross from freshman Briana

Brown and Else Each Score Two Goals for the Huskies
BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Sophomore Caitlin Brown (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills)
and senior Katie Else (Conway, N.H./Kennett) each scored two goals, and the
University of Southern Maine scored three times over a five-minute stretch of
the second half as the Huskies blanked the University of New England, 5-0, in
non-conference women's soccer action Wednesday evening.
The victory got the Huskies (1-2-0) into the win column for the first time
under first-year head coach Lisa Petruccelli, and improved USM's all-time record

season-opener for the Nor'easters.
Brown scored the first of her two goals 10:44 into the match to give the
Huskies a 1-0 lead. Southern Maine took that slim cushion into intermission
after outshooting UNE 9-2 over the opening 45 minutes.
The Huskies salted away the game midway through the second frame. Brown
notched her second goal of the evening in the 64th minute, then Else headed home

Husson Downs Southern Maine 2-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Katie Nickerson (Belfast, Maine) scored in the
12th minute and senior goalkeeper Leah Drew (Caribou, Maine) made three saves as
the Husson College Eagles opened their 2006 women's soccer season with a 2-0
victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference match
played Sunday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
Southern Maine, which dropped its season opener Saturday to Gordon College
by the same 2-0 margin, dips to 0-2.
Nickerson provided the Eagles the only goal they would need off a corner
kick. Junior Elissa Gordon (Bucksport, Maine) served the corner into the box
where it bounced around to junior Shelby Morissette (Londonderry, N.H.) at the
top of the 18-yard area. Morissette advanced the ball to Nickerson who turned
and hit a rolling shot past USM sophomore goalkeeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle
Lake, Maine/Fort Kent) at 11:26.
The Eagles got some breathing room in the 82nd minute when they received an
own goal after a USM defender mishit a clearing attempt and the ball spun past
the diving Morneault into the net.
Drew, who was not tested in the first half, made her best save midway
through the second half when USM was pressing for a tying goal. She stopped a
close-in shot by senior Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region), but the
rebound was shot harmlessly wide of the open net.
Morneault finished the match with four saves for Southern Maine.

Martin and Wasylak Named USM Women's Soccer Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior back Jenna Wasylak (Dunstable, Mass./Kimball
Union) and senior midfielder Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) have
been named co-captains for the 2006 University of Southern Maine Huskies women's
soccer team. First-year head coach Lisa Petruccelli made the announcement this
past Friday (September 1) as the Huskies prepared for today's season opening
match at Gordon College.
"Jenna and Danica realize that the responsibility of being a captain
requires a lot of hard work and dedication to themselves as well as their
teammates," noted Petruccelli. "Aside from being an honor, they both are aware
that it is a job. They have been leaders in our preseason workouts and will be
essential to the development of the team as it progresses throughout the
season."
Wasylak, a four-year member of the team, has been a mainstay in the Huskies
defensive back since the 2004 season. After working her way into the line-up 11
times as a freshman in 2003, Wasylak moved into a starting role as a sophomore.
Over the last two seasons, Wasylak has played and started 36 games for the
Huskies. Last season, she contributed two assists to compliment her defensive
duties.
"Jenna is the anchor to our defense," said Petruccelli. "A quiet leader
who get things done when they need to be done effectively, she has developed
into confident defender who leads by example."
Martin, a transfer from Stonehill College, joined the Southern Maine
program in 2005. In her first season with the team, Martin established herself
as a solid midfielder and scoring threat tallying eight points on three goals
and two assists. This season, Martin is expected to take on a more consistent
starting role in the Huskies' midfield.
"Danica has taken on a leadership role during the preseason," said
Petruccelli. "She has been a leader on the field and has been an excellent
example during our training sessions. She has also been vital in acclimating
our new players to the program."
Looking to rebound from its 2-0 season-opening loss at Gordon, Southern
Maine continues its 2006 campaign with its home opener against Husson College
tomorrow (Sunday, Sept.3) at 1:00 p.m.
After their home opener, the Huskies are on the road for their next contest
at the University of New England (Sept. 6). The Huskies will host back-to-back
home games versus St. Joseph's College (Sept. 9) and the United States Coast
Guard Academy (Sept. 10).
Southern Maine begins its Little East Conference play on the road at Rhode
Island College (Sept. 16). The Huskies then host LEC rival Keene State College
(Sept. 23) and non-conference rival Salem State (Sept. 28) before closing out
the month of September on the road at LEC opponent UMass Boston (Sept. 30).
In October, the Huskies start on the road at Framingham State (Oct. 4)
before hosting six consecutive home games against Plymouth State (Oct. 7), Bates
College (Oct. 11), UMass Dartmouth (Oct. 18), Eastern Connecticut State (Oct.
21) and Bowdoin College (Oct. 24). The Huskies' final regular season game is on
the road against Little East foe Western Connecticut State (Oct. 28).
The Little East Conference playoffs will include the top six teams and
begin with the quarterfinal round (3 vs. 6, 4 vs. 5) on October 31. Advancing
teams will play in the semifinals on November 3 and the finals on November 4.
The winner of the LEC championship will earn a berth to the 2006 NCAA Division
III championships.

USM Names Lisa Petruccelli Women's Soccer Head Coach
GORHAM, Maine -- Lisa Petruccelli, a former All-State
soccer player at
Cape Elizabeth (Maine) High School and most recently the women's soccer head
coach at SUNY-Potsdam, has been named the new head coach for women's soccer at
the University of Southern Maine. Al Bean, Director of Athletics at USM, made
the announcement following a national search.
Petruccelli, who becomes the fifth head coach in the 22-year history of the
women's soccer program, succeeds Steve Quinones, who resigned after eight years
(1998-2005; 65-69-8) as the Huskies' head coach to pursue other professional
opportunities.
"I'm very excited about coming to a program that did some great things last
year. This is a great opportunity for me to live where I want to live and to do
what I want to do," commented Petruccelli.
"The program has taken some positive steps forward the past four seasons
under (Quinones). I want to continue taking the program in a positive
direction, to win the (Little East Conference), and go to the national
tournament," added Petruccelli.
"Lisa will be an outstanding addition to our coaching staff and should be a
tremendous fit within the department. She has been a head soccer coach at
comparable institutions and has leadership experience that should prove to be an
outstanding compliment to our program philosophy. I feel confident that Lisa
will be successful on the field and will make an impact with our student-
athletes in many significant ways," said Bean.
Petruccelli played four years at Cape Elizabeth HS prior to attending Smith
College (Northampton, Mass.). During her four seasons at Smith (1988-91),
Petruccelli, a defender, played in 78 matches and had seven goals and four
assists for 18 points. She helped the Pioneers to a 52-21-6 record, including
two New England Women's 8 championships and two berths in the ECAC tournament,
during that span.
"Lisa Petruccelli, more than any other player with whom I had the pleasure
of sharing the pitch, exemplified the three R's of a successful athlete. She
respected herself, she respected her team mates and she took responsibility for
her actions. She was very talented and astute, and always played with a style of
grace and dignity," commented Petruccelli's former college coach, Jim Babyak.
Following her graduation from Smith in 1992 with a bachelor's degree in
biology, Petruccelli began her coaching career serving as an assistant coach at
the University of New England for one season. She move on to become a graduate
assistant at the University of Maryland while pursuing her master's degree in
kinesiology - sports management.
Petruccelli's first head coaching experience came in 1994 when she served
as the interim women's head coach at the University of Maine.
Named the first head coach for women's soccer at the University of
Wisconsin-Stout in 1995, Petruccelli guided the Blue Devils' program to a
27-41-5 overall record during its first four years, and was named the Wisconsin
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1998.
Returning to Maine in 1999, Petruccelli spent the next five years as an
assistant coach with the Bowdoin College women's soccer program. She returned
to the head coaching ranks in 2004 when she was named the head coach at SUNY-
Potsdam. In her combined seven seasons as a head coach, Petruccelli has
compiled a 30-86-8 record.
Petruccelli holds a national diploma from the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA) and is a certified strength and conditioning
specialist through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She has
also served as a coach, counselor or director at numerous soccer camps.
Southern Maine finished the 2005 season with an 11-7-2 record overall and a
4-3-0 mark (fourth place) in the Little East Conference. The Huskies advanced
to the semifinals of the LEC championship tournament before losing to eventual
champion Eastern Connecticut, 2-1, and were picked to play in the ECAC Division
III New England Tournament.
The Huskies open the 2006 season on September 2 at Gordon College.
