Three Huskies Named to NEWISA All-New England Teams

GORHAM, Maine -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine
women's soccer team have been honored for their outstanding play during the 2005
season by being named to the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer
Association (NEWISA) All-New England teams that were released Monday (December
12).
Named to the All-New England second team was freshman goalie Mindy
Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine/Fort Kent HS), the Little East Conference Rookie of
the Year. Selected for spots on the All-New England third team were senior
forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner HS) and senior defender Stacy
LeBlanc (Standish, Maine/Lake Region HS). The three are the first USM players
to earn NEWISA honors since Ali Hathaway and Molly Hagstrom were honored in
2000.
Stepping into the starting goalkeeper role, Morneault had an outstanding
rookie season. A two-time LEC Rookie of the Week pick, she compiled a 1.03
goals against average with 112 saves, six shutouts and a 10-6-2 record in 18
matches.
Brunton, the first USM player to win the LEC Offensive Player of the Year
award since the conference established the award in 2002, set a single-season
record for goals scored with 14, including five game-winning markers. She also
recorded five assists for 33 points in 20 matches. The LEC Offensive Player of
the Week for the week of September 26 through October 2, Brunton scored 26 goals
and passed out seven assist for 59 points over her two seasons since
transferring to USM from Franklin Pierce College.
LeBlanc was a stalwart on the Huskies' back line for the past three
seasons. She has anchored the group that was responsible for the team allowing
just 22 goals in 20 matches in 2005.
The Huskies finished the season 11-7-2 overall and 4-3-0 in the LEC. They
advanced to semifinals of the LEC tournament and earned a berth in the ECAC
Division III Women's New England Soccer Championship tournament.

Brunton, Morneault Earn Little East Conference Awards
Three Huskies Named to All-Little East Teams

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner
HS) and freshman goalkeeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine/Fort Kent HS) of
the University of Southern Maine women's soccer team have received recognition
from the Little East Conference with individual awards for their outstanding
play during the 2005 season.
Brunton, the Huskies' leading scorer, has been named the LEC Offensive
Player of the Year and Morneault was tabbed as the conference's Rookie of the
Year.
In addition to the individual awards, three members of the Huskies squad
earned spots on the all-conference teams. Brunton and senior defender Stacy
LeBlanc (Standish, Maine/Lake Region HS) were named to All-Little East first
team, and senior midfielder Dianna Thibaudeau (Sanford, Maine) earned a spot on
the All-LEC second team. This is the second straight year that Brunton, a
second team pick in 2004, and LeBlanc, a first team selection, have been named
to the all-conference team.
Brunton is the first USM player to win the Offensive Player of the Year
award since the conference added the award in 2002. The single-season record
holder for goals scored, Brunton has 14 goals, including five game-winning
markers, and five assists for 33 points in 19 matches. The LEC Offensive Player
of the Week for the week of September 26 through October 2, Brunton has scored
26 goals and passed out seven assist for 59 points over the last two seasons
since transferring to USM from Franklin Pierce College.
"Liz has definitely shown herself to be one of the most dangerous forwards
in the conference and the region," commented head coach Steve Quinones. "Her
ability to create something from a seemingly innocent situation is what makes
her so dangerous."
Stepping into the starting goalkeeper role, Morneault had an excellent
rookie season. A two-time LEC Rookie of the Week pick, she has compiled a 1.10
goals against average with 105 saves, five shutouts and a 10-6-1 record in 17
matches.
"Mindy established herself as one of the top keepers in the conference this
season," replied Quinones, an all-conference keeper in his collegiate playing
days at Franklin Pierce. "She was individually responsible for keeping us in
many games, and even won a few by herself."
LeBlanc has been a stalwart on the Huskies' back line for the past three
seasons. She has anchored the group that has is responsible for the team
allowing just 22 goals in 19 matches.
"Stacy has been rock solid in the back all season," said Quinones. "Her
poise under pressure when she has the ball is very noticeable, and a reason why
we've been so hard to score against."
Thibaudeau has come on strong the second half of the season to take the
second spot on the team's scoring list with 15 points on five goals, including
two game winners, and five assists. She has scored four the team's last five
goals.
"This is a great accolade for Dianna. She has really exerted herself in
the second half (of the season) to become one of the top central midfielders in
the conference. She has great power in the air, and her athleticism allows her
to be a dominate player at both ends of the field," added Quinones.
The Huskies, 11-7-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the LEC this season, will host
Brandeis University at the USM Soccer Field on Wednesday (2:00 p.m.) in a first
round game of the ECAC Division III Women's New England Soccer Championship
tournament.

USM Named Second Seed for ECAC Women's Soccer Tourney

GORHAM, Maine -- For the third time in the history of the program, the
University of Southern Maine Huskies women's soccer team has been selected to
play in a postseason tournament when it was announced Monday afternoon that the
Huskies will be the second seed in the 2005 Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) Division III Women's New England Soccer Championship.
Southern Maine, 11-7-1 overall, will host the seventh seeded Brandeis
University Judges, 8-8-1, in a first round match on Wednesday (November 9) at
the USM Soccer Field. Game time is 2:00 p.m. The tournament involves eight
teams in a single-elimination format.
Other first round matches have top seeded Simmons College (14-3-1)
traveling to eighth seeded St. Joseph's College of Connecticut (10-3-3), third
seeded Clark University (10-7-1) playing host to sixth seeded Wentworth
Institute of Technology (12-6-1), and fourth seeded Keene State College (11-6-3)
entertaining fifth seeded Western New England College (11-5-4).
The semifinal round games on Saturday (November 12) will pit the winner of
the Southern Maine-Brandeis game against the winner of the Clark-Wentworth game,
and the winner of the Simmons-St. Joseph's contest against the victor of the
Keene State-Western New England College match. The games will be at the highest
remaining seeds.
The championship game between the two semifinal winners will be played
Sunday at the highest remaining seed.
This is the Huskies first trip to postseason since the 2000 season when
they were the eighth seed in the ECAC tournament. The team's only other trip to
postseason play came in 1986 when it played in the ECAC tournament.
Southern Maine is enjoying one of its finest seasons in the 21-year history
of the program. Eighth-year head coach Steve Quinones has guided the Huskies to
11 wins, one shy of the school record, and a fourth place finish in the Little
East Conference regular season standings. The Huskies advanced to the LEC
tournament semifinals where they lost a 2-1 decision to eventual champion
Eastern Connecticut State University.
"We feel very fortunate to have this opportunity, "commented Quinones.
"It's been five years since this program played in a postseason tournament. The
players have really worked hard this year. I'm particularly happy for the
seniors who are finishing their careers with the opportunity to play in a
postseason tournament."
Southern Maine is led offensively by senior forward Liz Brunton (Birch
Harbor, Maine/Sumner HS) with 14 goals and 33 points. Brunton is followed in
the scoring table by senior midfielder Dianna Thibaudeau (Sanford, Maine) with
15 points on five goals and five assists, junior forward Julia Cyr (Standish,
Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) with five goals and four assists for 14 points, and senior
forward Eva Hanson (Warner, N.H./Kearsarge Regional HS) with four goals and five
assists for 13 points.
Anchoring the Huskies' defense are senior defender Stacy LeBlanc (Standish,
Maine/Lake Region HS), senior midfielder Sophia Louis (Saco, Maine/Thornton
Academy) and freshman goalkeeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine/Fort Kent
HS). Morneault has compiled a 1.10 goals against average in her rookie season
with 105 saves, five shutouts and a 10-6-1 record.
Brandeis, making its third straight trip to the ECAC tournament, posted an
8-8-1 record while competing in the University Athletic Association. The Judges
finished the season with a 3-1 victory over top rival NYU on Saturday to finish
at .500 and earn a berth in the postseason. Head coach Denise Dallamora, in her
26th season at the Judges' helm, won her 200th career game earlier this season
when Brandeis defeated MIT, 2-0, in the season opener.
On the field, the team is paced by senior forward Lauren Gregor (Holliston,
Mass.). Gregor, who leads the team with 10 goals and 24 points and is tied for
the top spot with four assists, will have a chance to continue her climb up
Brandeis's career scoring charts. With two goals and five points in the season
finale, Gregor moved within four points of becoming the University's second
career 100-point scorer, while her 39 goals are now three shy of the school
record. Junior forward Lisa Kaplin (Armonk, N.Y.) is the team's second-leading
scorer, with seven goals and two assists for 16 points.

Little East Conference Playoffs - First Round Game
Southern Maine Blanks Rhode Island College 1-0

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior midfielder Dianna Thibaudeau (Sanford, Maine)
scored the only goal of the match in the 20th minute to give the University of
Southern Maine Huskies a hard-fought, 1-0 victory over the Rhode Island College
Anchorwomen Tuesday afternoon in a first round Little East Conference playoff
game.
The Huskies, seeded fourth in the tournament, advance to play top-seeded
Eastern Connecticut State University in the semifinals on Friday. USM, which
had dropped its last three regular season games, improve to 11-6-1 overall.
Rhode Island College, the fifth seed, finishes the season at 10-8.
In the other first round playoff game Tuesday, third-seeded Keene State
College defeated sixth-seeded Plymouth State University, 1-0, in double
overtime. The Owls advance to play Western Connecticut State University in the
other semifinal. Eastern Connecticut will host both semifinal matches and the
championship game on Saturday. The winner of the tournament earns an automatic
berth in the 2005 NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
Senior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner HS) set up the
winning goal with some hard work in the right wing corner before crossing the
ball into the box where Thibaudeau got her head on it to direct it past the
Anchorwomen's freshman goalkeeper, Krissie Pyzynski (Bristol, Conn.). The goal
was Thibaudeau's fourth of the season and second game winner.
USM freshman keeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine/Fort Kent HS)
preserved the lead making five saves. Morneualt received strong defensive
efforts from senior Stacy LeBlanc (Standish, Maine/Lake Region HS), junior Jenna
Wasylak (Dunstable, Mass./Kimball Union Academy) and sophomore Samantha Rennie
(Hudson, N.H./Alvirne HS).
Southern Maine nearly had a second goal in the 61st minute, but junior
forward Julia Cyr's (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) curving free kick from the
left side just outside the penalty area bounced off the far post.
Rhode Island College had a 7-4 advantage in shots and the only two corner
kicks in the match. Pyzynski would be credited with one save.

GORHAM, Maine -- A pair of the University of Southern Maine women's fall
athletic teams are heading into the first round of the Little East Conference
playoffs beginning Tuesday (November 1). The Huskies' field hockey and women's
soccer teams have earned a berth in their respective LEC post-season tournament.
The Southern Maine women's soccer team, enjoying one of its finer seasons
in its 21-year history, enters the Little East Conference tournament with a
10-6-1 overall record and a 4-3-0 mark in the LEC. The Huskies will be the
fourth-seed in the tournament and will host the fifth-seed Rhode Island College

goals and 4 assists for 32 points. Southern Maine has also received solid

Western Connecticut Downs Southern Maine 1-0

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior midfielder Jessica Gomes (Wallingford,
Conn./Lyman Hall) scored the only goal in the eighth minute of play to give the
visiting Western Connecticut State University Colonials a 1-0 triumph over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's match
Saturday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
The win was the sixth straight for the Colonials and extended their
unbeaten streak to 15 (13-0-2) since a season-opening loss to Wheaton. Western
Connecticut is 13-1-2 overall and 4-0-2 in the Little East Conference with a
match to play tomorrow at Rhode Island College.
Southern Maine, which dropped its third straight match, finishes the
regular season at 10-6-1 overall and 4-3-0 in the conference. The Huskies will
host a first round playoff game in the LEC tournament on Tuesday.
Senior forward Nicole Corbin (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) set up the
only goal with a perfectly placed through pass between USM defenders that Gomes
was able to run down. After a couple of touches, Gomes sent her shot from about
12 yards out past USM freshman goalie Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine/Fort
Kent). The goal was the 10th of the season for Gomes.
Western Connecticut, which had a 20-7 advantage in shots in the match, had
a couple of other outstanding scoring chances. Junior Calie Carter (Lebanon,
N.H.) hit the post to the left of Morneault in the 21st minute, and sophomore
Kim Crayco (Bolton, Conn.) rang one off the crossbar in the 65th minute.
The Huskies best scoring bid came in the 55th minute, but senior midfielder
Dianna Thibaudeau's (Sanford, Maine) first-time volley sailed over the cross
bar.
Morneault was outstanding in goal for the Huskies finishing with 13 saves.
Sophomore Ashley Griffin (Newington, Conn.) was credited with three saves for
the Colonials to pick up her third shutout of the season.

Plymouth State Snaps Skid, Blanks Southern Maine 1-0

PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Junior Kelsey McBride (Brookline, N.H.) scored the only
goal of the game in the 65th minute Thursday afternoon as Plymouth State
University’s women’s soccer team posted a 1-0 upset victory over the University
of Southern Maine in a Little East Conference make-up contest at Panther Field.
The Panthers pulled the upset to stop their seven-game losing streak and
improve to 4-10-1 overall and 2-4 in conference play. The Huskies, who entered
the game in second place in the LEC, dropped their second straight and slipped
to 10-5-1 overall and 4-2 in Little East games.
McBride collected her team-leading seventh goal of the season with 25
minutes to play in the second half, finishing off a nice crossing pass from
sophomore Jaimee Coombs (Peabody, Mass.).
Both teams had chances to score in the opening half but could not convert.
Coombs delivered a through-ball to senior Melissa Erwin (Newington, Conn.)
midway through the half, but her shot was stopped by USM freshman keeper Mindy
Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine). Senior Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine) rang
one off the crossbar for USM five minutes later, but the teams went into the
break scoreless.
Each team had another opportunity early in the second half. Erwin sent
junior Kelsey MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) in alone for the Panthers, but her
shot went wide, and PSU senior keeper Hayley Quinones (Waitsfield, Vt.) made a
nice save on Brunton, who took a shot after a nice pass from senior Eva Hanson
(Warner, N.H.).
After McBride broke the scoreless deadlock, the Huskies got two more good
scoring chances, but could not convert. USM finished with a 16-12 advantage in
shots. Morneault made seven saves for USM, and Quinones stopped 12 shots for
PSU.
The regular season ends this Saturday with conference home games for both
teams. PSU hosts UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.) and USM entertains Western
Connecticut (12:00 p.m.) The Panthers need a win or a tie over UMD to qualify
for next week’s LEC Tournament.

Buzzell Scores Two to Lead Eastern Conn. Past USM, 3-1

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. - The Eastern Connecticut State University women's
soccer team scored twice in the first five minutes and held on to defeat the
University of Southern Maine, 3-1 Saturday in a Little East Conference match
featuring a pair of conference unbeatens.
Entering play with a one-point lead over Southern Maine (10-4-1, 4-1-0) in
the conference standings, Eastern (8-5-2, 5-0-1) moves four points ahead of the
second place Huskies with one regular-season conference match remaining. The
Warriors look to clinch their first-ever regular-season title outright Saturday
when they visit Rhode Island College. Southern Maine has two remaining
conference matches, visiting Plymouth State University Thursday and hosting
Western Connecticut State University Saturday.
Senior forward Caitlin Buzzell (Manchester, Conn.) and junior midfielder
Carrie Fleischer (Tolland, Conn.) scored 1:28 apart in the first five minutes of
the match to give Eastern a quick 2-0 lead before the Huskies got one back in
the 26th minutes when senior midfielder Dianna Thibaudeau (Sanford, ME) headed
in senior midfielder Sophia Louis' (Saco, ME) free kick. That margin stood up
until Buzzell recorded her 11th goal of the season with 3:34 left in the match
to restore the two-goal advantage.
Buzzell's first goal came on a cross from the left from senior forward
Meghann Booth (Windsor Locks, Conn.) with just 3:06 gone in the match. Alone in
front of the net, Buzzell settled the ball and rifled it past Southern Maine
freshman keeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, ME). One minute and 28 seconds
later, senior forward Jenn Orme (Centereach, N.Y.) sent a corner kick across the
box to the far post, where Fleischer one-timed it past Morneault while stationed
right at the left post.
Leading 2-1, Eastern dodged a bullet when sophomore back Samantha Rennie's
(Hudson, N.H.) shot in traffic from in the box was cleared off the line by
Eastern senior back Ashley Dynderski (North Branford, Conn.) with 11 minutes
left.
Buzzell nearly made it 3-0 when she hit the left post eight minutes into
the match and Orme was denied with 13 minutes left when she couldn't capitalize
on two shots from in close, the first shot being saved by Morneault and the
second bouncing off the post.
Orme set up the insurance goal when she carried into the box before being
taken down by a Southern Maine defender. Buzzell collected the loose ball and
hit a quick turnaround shot from the right side of the box that traveled over
Morneault's head and inside the far left post.
Eastern hosts Trinity College Wednesday at 3 p.m. while Southern Maine
visits Colby College Tuesday at 3 p.m.

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner
HS) scored the only goal of the match to give the University of Southern Maine
Huskies a 1-0 triumph over the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers in a
non-conference women's soccer contest Tuesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

shots, Brunton scored the only goal when she pursued a service into the box by
junior defender Jenna Wasylak (Dunstable, Mass./Kimball Union) and touched home
a shot from about six yards out. The goal was Brunton's 14th of the season.

the lead the remainder of the way to post her fifth shutout of the season. She
was credited with two saves. UMF sophomore keeper Melissa Demerchant (Presque

LEWISTON, Maine -- Sophomore Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) and junior
Kim Alexander (Cumberland, Maine) each scored a goal and assisted on another to
lead the Bates College women's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over the University
of Southern Maine Wednesday at Leahey Field.
Wagner got the Bobcats (7-3) on the board less than six minutes into the
game, receiving a back pass from Alexander 35 yards in front of the USM goal and
booming a shot high and inside the upper right corner of the net.
Bates held the one-goal edge until the 69th minute when Alexander winded
her way through the Huskies' penalty area before muscling past a USM defender
and pushing a shot past freshman goalie Mindy Morneault's (Eagle Lake,
Maine/Fort Kent HS) far side.
Wagner teamed up with defender Meg Coffin (Westford, Mass.) on a free kick
for a third goal with fewer than three minutes left in the game. Wagner's free
kick from near the right corner twisted toward the USM goal, and the 6-foot-1
Coffin was the first to get a head on it, redirecting the ball into the upper
left corner.
Bates had 25 shots to seven for USM. Morneault stopped nine shots, while
Nini Spalding (San Francisco, Calif.) had two saves for Bates.

Samantha Rennie, Mindy Morneault Receive LEC Honors

GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
women’s soccer team have been cited by the Little East Conference for their
standout play during the week of October 3-9.
For the second time this season, freshman goalkeeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle
Lake, Maine/ Fort Kent HS) has been selected as the LEC Rookie of the Week. In
addition, sophomore defender Samantha Rennie (Hudson, N.H./Alvirne HS) was

member of the USM women’s soccer team has receive an LEC citation.
Morneault, who was named the LEC Rookie of the Week for the week of
September 19-25, was brilliant in goal for the Huskies during their 2-2 overtime
draw on the road against nationally-ranked Bowdoin College last Wednesday. The
rookie keeper was credited with 13 saves during the match that would snap a 19-
match losing skid at the hands of the Polar Bears.
Rennie picked an opportunistic moment to score her first collegiate goal as
she collected a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and placed a well-
struck shot past the Bowdoin goalkeeper to tie the match at 2-2 in the 71st
minute.
For the season, Morneault has compiled an 0.97 goals against average with
43 saves, two shutouts and a 7-1-1 record. Rennie, who had one assists in 17
matches as a freshman, has the one goal in 11 starts this season.

Huskies Earn 2-2 Draw With Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Sophomore defender Samantha Rennie (Hudson,
N.H./Alvirne HS) scored her first collegiate goal in the 71st minute to give the
University of Southern Maine Huskies a 2-2 overtime draw with the nationally-
ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears Wednesday afternoon in the first-ever match
played on Bowdoin's new women's soccer pitch at Pickard Field.
The draw snapped a 19-match losing streak in the series for the Huskies,
and extended their unbeaten string to six games, equaling the school record.
Bowdoin had won every previous match in the series dating back to 1985.
Southern Maine is now 8-2-1 overall. Bowdoin is 6-2-1 overall.
Rennie collected a loose ball in the box following a corner kick and fired
a shot by Bowdoin sophomore goalkeeper Katherine Popoff (Taipei, Taiwan/Choate)
for the match-tying goal.
Bowdoin took a 1-0 lead in the 23rd minute as junior Ivy Blackmore
(Hamilton, N.Y./Hamilton East) picked up her own rebound of a shot stopped by
USM freshman keeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine/Fort Kent HS) and slipped
the second chance into the net.
The Huskies equalized in the 27th minute as senior forward Liz Brunton
(Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner HS) scored her single-season record 13th marker of
the campaign off an assist from senior midfielder Devin Edwards (South Paris,
Maine/Oxford Hills HS). Brunton broke the previous single season record for
goal set in 1995 by Deb Jandreau and equaled by Brunton last season.
The Polar Bears regained the lead in the second half when a well-placed
shot from sophomore Ann Zeigler (Washington D.C./National Cathedral) found the
top-left corner of the goal at 54:44. The goal was set up by freshman Elizabeth
Battin (Lexington, Mass./Hotchkiss).
In overtime, Bowdoin had the best chance to win the game when a corner kick
early in the second extra frame resulted in a open look at the net for freshman
Emily Swaim (Wellesley, Mass./Winsor). Swaim ripped a shot that appeared to be
destined towards the back of the net, but was headed away by USM junior defender
Jenna Wasylak (Dunstable, Mass./Kimball Union).
Morneault was outstanding in the goal for the Huskies making 13 saves.
Senior Anna Shapell (Cape Elizabeth, Maine/Waynefleet) played the first 65
minutes for Bowdoin and made five stops. Popoff played the final 45 minutes and
was credited with five saves.
The Huskies return to action on Saturday (October 8) when they travel to
Little East Conference rival Plymouth State University for a 4:00 p.m. match.

Liz Brunton Named LEC Offensive Player of the Week

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner
HS) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's soccer team has been
named the Little East Conference Offensive Player of the Week for the period of
September 26 through October 2. The announcement was made Monday afternoon by
the conference office.
Brunton is the second member of the conference-leading Huskies to receive
an LEC weekly award. Freshman goaltender Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake,
Maine/Fort Kent HS) was named the conference's Rookie of the Week last week.
In two matches last week, Brunton tallied four goals, including the game
winner in each match. She had the Huskies' first and third goals in a 4-0 LEC
win over the University of Massachusetts Boston on Saturday. The next afternoon
at St. Joseph's College, Brunton found the net twice in the first half of an
eventual 2-1 USM triumph.
"Liz has emerged as one of the top scoring threats in the conference,"
complimented eighth-year head coach Steve Quinones. "It's a great honor for
her. She has shown great consistency and remarkable resilience this season.
Defenses are targeting her, but she has been able to find the holes to finish.
It's a testament to her teammates being able to find her with quality service."
On the season, Brunton leads the Huskies with 12 goals and four assists for
28 points. Her 12 goals ties the single-season record that was established by
Deb Jandreau in 1995 and equaled by Brunton last season.
Since transferring to USM from Franklin Pierce College after her sophomore
year, Brunton has scored 24 career goals in 30 matches to rank third all-time,
one behind Jandreau (1995-1997) and four behind all-time leader Ali Hathaway
(1998-2000).
The Huskies, 8-2-0 overall and 3-0-0 in the conference, are off to their
best start in the 21-year history of the program. They will travel to perennial
powerhouse Bowdoin College on Wednesday. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.

BANGOR, Maine -- The Husson College Eagles scored three unanswered goals
to erase a 1-0 deficit en route to a 3-1 victory over the University of Southern
Maine Huskies in a non-conference women’s college soccer match played Sunday
afternoon during the second day of play at the Husson Invitational tournament.
Because of a late cancellation by the fourth team scheduled to play in the
tournament, the Eagles split their roster to play Eastern Connecticut State
University and USM. Husson's second group lost to Eastern Connecticut 9-1 in
the first game Sunday before the Eagle’s first group, which stunned ECSU on
Saturday, knocked off the Huskies. The win improved the Eagles overall mark to

minute. Senior Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner HS), who scored four
goals in Saturday’s match, crossed the ball into the box where junior Julia Cyr
(Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) hit a half volley shot past Husson sophomore
goalkeeper Leah Drew (Caribou, Maine).
The lead lasted barely two minutes until Husson sophomore Shelby Morissette
(Londonderry, N.H.) scored on a header off a corner kick. The Eagles would take
the lead for good in the 31st minute as junior Meridith Horner (Charlton, Mass.)
gained possession of a loose ball in the box and knock a shot by USM freshman
keeper Cyndi Michaels (Wethersfield, Conn.).
Husson scored the only goal of the second half when Horner had her shot
stopped by Michaels, but the rebound went right to sophomore Kaylin Caron
(Sandown, N.H.) who booted the ball into the open net.
After surrendering the opening goal, Drew kept the Huskies off the
scoreboard the rest of the way. She was credited with 13 saves. Michaels made
seven stops for USM. Southern Maine held a 19-11 advantage in total shots and a
3-2 edge in corner kicks.

HS) scored the winning goal in the sixth minute of overtime to give the
University of Southern Maine Huskies a 2-1 victory over the University of New
England Nor'easters in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at the USM
Soccer Field.
The win improved the Huskies overall record to 2-1-0. The match was the
season opener for the Nor'easters.
A throw-in down the left side sent USM senior forward Liz Brunton (Birch
Harbor, Maine/Sumner HS) to the end line from where she crossed the ball across
the goal mouth. Cyr got her foot to the ball to deflect it into the net for the
game winner.
The Nor'easters made the most of their best offensive opportunity in the
match with less than four minutes to play to draw even at 1-1. Sophomore
forward Amanda Smith (Londonderry, N.H.) brought the ball down the left side and
pushed a pass forward to sophomore midfielder Melissa Lavasseur (Manchester,
N.H.) . Lavasseur took a couple of touches and while fending off a USM defender
sent a bouncing shot across the goal into the far corner.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 in the 14th minute when senior midfielder Dianna
Thibaudeau (Sanford, Maine) got her body on a cross from Cyr and deflected the
ball into the net. The lead would hold up until Levasseur's equalizer in the
87th minute.

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior midfielder Chrissy MacArthur (Hampton, N.H.)
scored the only goal of the match in the 52nd minute as the Gordon College
Fighting Scots opened their season with a 1-0 victory over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
Southern Maine, which opened the season Friday with a win at Coast Guard,
dropped to 1-1-0.
The only goal of the defensive struggle came early in the second half.
Sophomore Kiersten Hess (Santa Barbara, Calif.) got her foot to a shot from just
inside the top of the penalty area that struck a USM defender and bounced away.
MacArthur tracked down the loose ball to the left of the goal, took a touch and
beat freshman goalkeeper Mindy Morneault (Eagle Lake, Maine/Fort Kent HS) from
about seven yards out. The unassisted goal came at 51:16.
The Huskies pressed the attack late in the match looking for the equalizer,
but junior keeper Mary Griffenhagen (Franklin, Vt.) was able to preserve the
Fighting Scots lead. Griffenhagen's best stop of the match came with less than
ten minutes to play when she parried junior midfielder Julia Cyr's (Standish,
Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) long, high shot over the cross bar.
The opening 45 minutes was dominated by a lot of midfield play and solid
defense. Southern Maine had the best scoring opportunity, but Griffenhagen
easily stopped senior Dianna Thibaudeau's (Sanford, Maine) right-footed shot
from eight yards out.

LeBlanc, Louis Named USM Women's Soccer Captains
Huskies Open 2005 Campaign at Coast Guard

GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Stacy LeBlanc (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS)
and Sophia Louis (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) have been named captains for the
2005 University of Southern Maine women's soccer team that opens its season
tomorrow (Friday, September 2). Head coach Steve Quinones, who begins his
eighth season as the Huskies' head coach, made the announcement.
The Huskies will travel to New London, Conn., to open the season against
the United States Coast Guard Academy The opening kickoff is scheduled for 1:00
p.m. The Huskies return to Gorham the Saturday afternoon for their home opener
against Gordon College, also starting at 1:00 p.m.
LeBlanc, a center defender, was a first team All-Little East Conference
selection last season. She has been a two-year starter since transferring to USM

tenacious defensive player who anchors the Huskies' midfield unit. This is the

Quinones. "Sophia has a strong desire to win. Her intensity on the field helps
spark the rest of the team. In contrast, Stacy gives us that calm and steadying
influence that allows the other players to play more relaxed."

New England on September 7 (4:00), then head to the Husson College Invitational
