Three Huskies Named to All-Little East Squad
Quinones Named Coach of the Year

GORHAM, Maine -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine women's
soccer team have been named to the All-Little East Conference first and second
teams that were announced Monday afternoon following voting by the conference's
eight head coaches.
In addition, seventh-year head coach Steve Quinones was selected by his peers
as the Coach of the Year for the first time.
Named to the All-Little East first team was junior defender Stacy LeBlanc
(Standish, Maine/ Lake Region HS). Junior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor,
Maine/Sumner HS) and junior midfielder Devin Edwards (South Paris, Maine/Oxford
Hills HS) were named to the second team. This is the first time each has been
named to the all-conference team.
I'm very happy for all three players. They worked very hard this season and
it's very rewarding to see them receive this recognition from the coaches,"
commented Quinones who guided to Huskies to an 8-8-4 overall mark and a spot in
the LEC tournament semifinals.
"Stacy provided us a nice, steadying influence in the back. She gave us the
leadership and solid play on the back line (where the Huskies started two freshmen
and a sophomore along with LeBlanc)," said Quinones about his first team defender.
LeBlanc played in 18 games and helped the Huskies limit the opposition to 1.50
goals a game.
Brunton, who transferred to USM from Division II Franklin Pierce, led the
team in scoring with a record tying 12 goals and two assists for 26 total points.
She had three game-winning goals during the season.
"Liz was a pleasant surprise this season. She had a great surge in the
second half of the season to establish herself as one of the top forwards in the
LEC," added Quinones.
Edwards, who moved back into midfield this season after playing two seasons
at forward, finished second to Brunton in scoring with six goals and two assists
for 14 points.
"Devin adapted very well to a new position. Her tireless work ethic and
speed gave us an added dimension in the midfield this season," added Quinones.
Quinones, who guided the Huskies to their first LEC tournament berth in four
seasons this fall, has compiled an overall record of 54-62-7 in his seven seasons
at the helm of the program. He led the team into the conference tournament
semifinals with a 4-1 first round win over Plymouth State University before losing
in overtime to eventual champion Keene State College. The Huskies were the only
squad to put a blemish on Keene State's conference record this year as the teams
played to a 1-1 draw in early October.
"It's a great honor to be recognized by your peers. I have to give all the
credit to my team," replied Quinones when asked for his thoughts about being named
the Coach of the Year.

Little East Conference Tournament - Semifinal Game
Huskies Rally Falls Short In Overtime to Keene State, 3-2

KEENE, N.H. -- Sophomore midfielder Courtney Gately (Canton, Mass.) scored
the "Golden Goal" 3:34 into the first sudden death overtime period to give the
top-seeded Keene State College Owls a 3-2 victory over the fourth-seeded
University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first semifinal match of the 2004
Little East Conference Women's Soccer Championship tournament being played at
KSC's Owl Athletic Complex.
The win vaults the Owls into tomorrow's championship match against second-
seeded Eastern Connecticut State University, which advanced to the final beating
third-seeded Western Connecticut State University on penalty kicks, 5-4, after the
two teams played to a 1-1 draw. Keene State, which is making its sixth straight
appearance in the title game, will take a four-match unbeaten streak and an
overall record of 12-5-2 into the championship final. The winner of the title
match earns an automatic berth in the 2004 NCAA Division III National Championship
tournament.
Southern Maine, making its first appearance in the semifinals since 2000,
finishes its season 8-8-4 overall.
Gately knocked in the game winner out of a scramble in front of the USM net
following a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Michelle Harmon (Nashua, N.H.)
The two sides, which played a 1-1 draw during the regular season, played a
scoreless first half before the Owls got on the board first. Sophomore Katie
Stevens (Londonderry, N.H.) broke the stalemate at the 67:17 with an unassisted
goal. The lead doubled ten minutes later when freshman Renee Halsey (Francestown,
N.H.) took a pass from Harmon and blasted a shot past USM senior goalkeeper Marcy
Ansley (Hudson, Mass.).
The Huskies, who have never beaten the Owls in eight previous meetings (0-7-
1), began their valiant comeback effort with ten minutes to play in regulation as
junior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, ME/Sumner HS) cut the deficit in half
with her record tying 12th goal of the season at 79:53. Brunton, who transferred
to USM this year after spending two years at Division II Franklin Pierce College,
tied the single-season mark for most goals set by Debbie Jandreau in 1995.
Junior forward Devin Edwards (South Paris, ME/Oxford Hills HS) sent the match
into the extra session when she picked up a loose ball inside the penalty area and
beat KSC senior keeper Michelle Mason (Freeport, N.Y.) for her sixth goal of the
season with 8:38 remaining in regulation time.
Ansley finished the match making seven saves while Mason was credited with
two stops.

Little East Conference Tournament - 1st Round Game

Brunton Hat Trick Lead Huskies By Panthers 4-1

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Liz Brunton (Birch Harbor, Maine/Sumner HS)
scored three goals and had an assist to lead the fourth seeded University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-1 triumph over the fifth-seeded Plymouth State
University Panthers Tuesday afternoon in a first round playoff match of the 2004
Little East Conference women's soccer tournament.
The Huskies, 8-7-4 overall, advance to play top-seeded Keene State College on
Friday in one semifinal match. This is the Huskies first trip to the semifinal
round since the 2000 tournament. Plymouth State finishes the season 6-10-1
overall.
Brunton put the Huskies on top early as she took a through pass from senior
Amanda Loomis (Poultney, Vt.) and beat PSU junior goalkeeper Hayley Quinones
(Waitsfield, Vt./Harwood Union HS) from 10 yards out in the sixth minute.
The margin doubled six minutes later as Brunton's bad angle shot deflected
off a Panther defender and just out of the reach of Quinones in the 12th minute.
The Panthers cut the deficit in half in the 26th minute when sophomore Krista
Pettrey (Northfield, Vt.) took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that went
off a USM defender and over USM senior goalkeeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.).
Brunton sent senior Amanda Valeriani (South Portland, Maine) in off the right
side with a nifty pass in the 43rd minute, and Valeriani placed a left-footed shot
by Quinones for a 3-1 lead at the break.
The only goal of the second half came in the 65th minute as Brunton took the
ball away from a defender and beat Quinones from 12 yards.
The hat trick was the first by a USM player since Abbie Leonard had three
goals against UMass Boston in October 2001. Brunton now has 11 goals on the
season, one shy of the school single-season record.
Ansley finished the match with three saves while Quinones made four stops for
the Panthers. Southern Maine enjoyed an 11-7 advantage in shots and a 4-1 margin
in corner kicks.

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Kelly Cyr (St. Agatha, Maine/Wisdom HS) scored once
in each half and senior goalkeeper Shana Howard (Warren, Maine/Medomak Valley HS)
made nine saves as the St. Joseph's College Monks shut out the University of
Southern Maine Huskies 2-0 in a non-conference women's soccer match played Monday

USM Benefits From UNE's Miscue For 1-0 Win

the ball into her own net for a 1-0 decision in a non-conference women's soccer
match Monday afternoon.
UNE's own goal came at the 37:41 mark of the first half after junior forward
Kelsey Shamano (Rowley, Mass./Triton Regional HS) served a corner kick into the
area around the six-yard line. The ball deflected off a UNE defender who was
attempting to clear the ball and provided the Huskies with the lone tally of the
match.

the Nor'easters to just five shots, none in the opening 60 minutes of play.
Senior goalkeeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.) was credited with two saves for her
fourth shutout.

The win gives the Polar Bears an overall record of 5-3-1. Southern Maine,
which lost for the first time in its last four matches, dipped to 4-4-3 overall.

Bowdoin doubled its lead early in the second half when freshman Ann Zeigler
(Washington, D.C.) one-timed a cross from sophomore Ivy Blackmore (Hamilton, N.Y.)

goalkeeper Melissa Carpentier (Woonsocket, R.I.) for her third goal of the season.
Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the 35th minute when senior Amanda Loomis

GORHAM, Maine -- The teams traveling the longest distances picked up
victories as the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Eagles and the SUNY-Fredonia
Blue Devils each came from behind Saturday afternoon to post wins in the first day
of play at the University of Southern Maine Invitational.
The Eagles surrendered an early goal, then scored twice in a span of seven-
and-a-half minutes to post a 2-1 win over the host University of Southern Maine
Huskies before the Blue Devils needed go into overtime to defeat the Western New
England College Golden Bears by the same score.
In the opening game, senior co--captain Amanda Valeriani (South Portland,
Maine) gave the host Huskies a 1-0 lead at the 7:06 mark when she took a cross
from junior Eva Hanson (Warner, N.H.) and hit a 10-yard shot past Eagles' junior
goalkeeper Stephanie Harbaugh (Hartland, Wis.).
The lead lasted less than three minutes as freshman midfielder Meghan Berger
(Waukesha, Wis.) tied the game with a six-yard header off a short cross from hard-
working sophomore forward Mandy Rue (Vadnais Heights, Minn.).
The Eagles would get what proved to be the decisive goal in the 18th minute
as USM senior goalie Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.) made a standout save on a hard,
low shot, but was unable to control the rebound which struck a Huskies defender in
the six-yard box and rolled into the goal.

could muster any sustained possession or shots at goal. Junior Erinne Goodwin
(East Longmeadow, Mass.) finally broke the scoreless deadlock at 74:02 as she
knocked in the rebound of sophomore Megan DeAngelo's (East Longmeadow, Mass.) shot
that hit the post.

even at 75:26 with a hard shot into the upper right corner from outside the 18-
yard box. Junior forward Jessica Weiser (Rochester, N.Y.) was credited with the
only assist.

(Rochester, N.Y.) and after having her first shot stuffed by a Golden Bear
defender, she slotted home a 10-yard shot.
