Southern Maine Women's Soccer Earns League Honors
Molly Tanguay and Eva Hanson Named to All-Conference Team

GORHAM, Maine - Senior midfielder Molly Tanguay (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth HS)
and sophomore forward Eva Hanson (Warner, N.H./Kearsarge Regional HS) of the
University of Southern Maine women's soccer team have earned All-Little East
Conference honors in recognition of their stellar play throughout the course of
the recently completed 2003 campaign. The All-Conference teams and individual
awards were announced Monday by William M. Moore, commissioner for the Little
East.
The all-conference honors were the first for both players. Tanguay, a three-
year starter after transferring to USM from Dickinson College, was named to the
first team. Hanson was named to the second team.
Tanguay, who served as team captain this year, started 15 contests in the
center midfield. A gifted all-around player, Tanguay curtailed the opposition's
scoring threats, while igniting the Huskies' transition to offense. She launched
16 shots on the year and tallied a goal in the season-opening win over Wheelock. A
three-year member of the Southern Maine program, Tanguay concluded her career with
six goals and two assists for 14 points.
"This is a well deserved honor for (Tanguay) for all the hard work and
leadership she has put into the program. Even though she played injured much of
the season, she led on the field by example," commented head coach Steve Quinones.
Hanson quietly emerged as one of the league's more potent offensive threats.
After one point on an assist a year ago, Hanson erupted for 18 points on nine
goals this year. Among the conference leaders, Hanson was tied for third in goals
scored and fourth in total points, while she led the team in each category. She
netted the decisive goal in wins over Simmons, UMass Boston and the University of
New England for a team-leading three game-winning goals.
"(Hanson) is just starting to find her form as an offensive player. I'm very
excited that she is recognized for her play this season. This is just the start
of what should be a great career at USM," praised Quinones.
The efforts of Tanguay and Hanson enabled the Huskies to post an overall mark
of 6-9-2 this year, which represents marked improvement over the club's record of
a year ago (4-12). In addition, the Huskies' 2003 record is deceptive, as four of
the club's losses were by one goal, including a 1-0 defeat at Plymouth State with
10 seconds remaining in the second overtime period. Three of the club's one goal
setbacks occurred in LEC play, where the Huskies finished with a 1-5-1 mark.

Eastern Connecticut Downs Southern Maine 1-0

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Sophomore midfielder Jen Orme (Centereach, N.Y.) scored
the only goal of the match late in the first half as the Eastern Connecticut State
University Warriors held off the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies by
a 1-0 score in a Little East Conference match played Saturday afternoon.
The loss ended the Huskies' season at 6-9-2 overall and 1-5-1 in the Little
East. Eastern Connecticut finished the regular season 9-6-1 overall and 5-1-1 in
LEC play. The Warriors will receive a first round bye in the six-team LEC
tournament, and host a semifinal match on Thursday (November 6).
Orme carried the ball down the left side before lofting a shot into the right
corner from a bad angle past USM junior goalkeeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.).
The goal was the fourth of the season, and third game-winner, for Orme.
Southern Maine's best chance to score came in the second half off an indirect
free kick, but junior midfielder Amanda Loomis' (Poultney, Vt.) header off a chip
from senior Molly Tanguay (Yarmouth, Maine) was stopped by the Warriors' diving
senior keeper, Stacy Schofield (Woodstock, Conn.).
Eastern Connecticut threatened three times, but the Huskies came up with
standout defensive saves. Sophomore back Stacey LeBlanc (Standish, Maine) moved
into the goal to knock down a hard shot by sophomore Meghann Booth (Windsor Locks,
Conn.) from the left of the box with Ansley out off her line to keep the Warriors
off the board 21 minutes into the match. With 20 minutes left, Orme threatened
again when she took a perfect through-ball from junior forward Jen Ferrari
(Coventry, R.I.) but Ansley knocked down the 12-yard blast and the Southern Maine
cleared the rebound. With 1:45 left, junior midfielder Annmarie Fillian (Canton,
Conn.) ripped a 25-yarder over the head of Ansley toward an open goal but
sophomore back Kim Wagner (Hallowell, Maine) - inserted into the match just
minutes earlier - raced back to head the shot over the crossbar.
Eastern Connecticut held a wide 17-6 advantage in shots in the match while
Southern Maine had a slim 6-5 edge in corner kicks. Ansley finished the match
with eight saves while Schofield was credited with three saves.

Huskies Subdue Nor'easters, 3-0

GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore Eva Hanson (Warner, N.H.) netted a pair of goals
including the game winner to lead the host University of Southern Maine Huskies to
a 3-0 triumph over the visiting University of New England Nor'easters in non-

With the win, Southern Maine evened its overall record at 6-6-1, while the

Freshman Lauren Gagnon (Danvers, Mass.) set up the decisive goal, when she

post. Hanson corralled the ball and directed it just inside the post in the 28th
minute of play.
Sophomore Devin Edwards (South Paris, Maine) culminated a great individual
effort with her sixth goal of the season to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead at 51:12.
She beat UNE senior keeper Amanda Brown (Scarborough, Maine) to a loose ball at
the top of the area, but Brown made the save on a hard shot from point-blank
range. The rebound caromed into the air, and Edwards alertly headed it into the
net.
Hanson's second goal of the game, and eighth of the season came on a similar
play to Edwards' goal. Brown stopped Hanson's shot from in close but was unable to
control the rebound. Hanson pounced on the loose ball and knocked it across the

The Nor'easter's best chance to score came in the 73rd minute, when junior
Caitlin Glancy (Saugus, Mass.) fended off a Southern Maine defender as the two
raced in on junior keeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.). Glancy's shot from inside
the area sailed over the outstretched arms of Ansley, but also sailed over the
crossbar.
