only member of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's soccer team to

Huskies Drop 2-1 Heartbreaker in Double OT
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Junior forward Valarie Gasparino (Windsor Locks,
Conn.) scored with 59 second left in the second sudden death overtime period to
give the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors a 2-1 victory over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference women's soccer
match Saturday afternoon.
Gasparino brought the match to a sudden end when her shot from about six
yards out deflected off a USM defender and past freshman goalkeeper Marcy Ansley
(Hudson, Mass.). The goal was her fifth of the season.
Eastern Connecticut broke a scoreless tie at 61:48 when sophomore defender
Jocelyn Preston (Thompson, Conn.) headed home a corner kick taken by Gasparino.
It was her first career goal for Eastern Connecticut.
Just over a minute later, the Huskies got the equalizer when sophomore
defender Molly Hagstrom (Yarmouth, Maine) scored her second of the season.
Hagstrom headed in a cross from freshman forward Jen Kelley (Pepperell, Mass.).
Ansley finished the match with 13 saves, as the Warriors outshot the
Huskies, 29-13. Sophomore Stacey Schofield (Woodstock, Conn.) made five saves
for the Warriors.
The loss ended the Huskies bid to qualify for the upcoming Little East
tournament and their 2001 season. USM finished in a tie with the University of
Massachusetts Dartmouth for the sixth and final spot in the tournament, but lost
out on the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Huskies ended their season 7-9-0

Eastern Connecticut, which won its school record 13th game of the season,
finished second in the conference and will receive a first round bye. The

Garland Leads Huskies by Panthers, 2-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior midfielder Erin Garland (Westbrook, Maine)
scored what proved to be the game-winning goal on a penalty kick 13 minutes into
the second half and assisted on a second goal as the University of Southern
Maine Huskies defeated the Plymouth State College Panthers 2-1 Tuesday afternoon
in a Little East Conference women's soccer match at the USM soccer pitch.
The win was the Huskies fourth in the last five matches, and improved
their overall record to 7-8-0. Plymouth State dropped its fourth straight match
to fall to 5-9-0 overall. USM, PSC and the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth are tied with 2-4-0 records in Little East play heading into
Saturday's regular season finales. Two of the three will earn a spot in the
upcoming postseason tournament that starts October 23.
Garland set up the first goal of the match, crossing the ball through the
18-yard area to senior Jen Young (Middlebury, Vt.) who took one touch and beat
PSC senior goalkeeper Becky Kennedy (West Springfield, Mass.) from about ten
yards out. The goal came just 1:40 into the match.
Thirteen minutes into the second half, Garland was taken down just inside
the box by the last Plymouth State defender on a breakaway, resulting in a
penalty kick. Garland calmly struck her shot into the left side of the net past
Kennedy for a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers made things interesting with 4:13 to play when senior
midfielder Beth Dooley (Goffstown, N.H.) scored to cut the deficit in half.
Sophomore defender Kate Van Tassel's (Natick, Mass.) long cross bounced over a
USM defender to Dooley, who put a six -yard shot past USM freshman keeper Marcy
Ansley (Hudson, Mass.). The Panthers kept the pressure on, but were unable to
generate a good scoring opportunity over the final four minutes.
Kennedy finished the match making four saves while Ansley was credited
with one save. Southern Maine had a 14-3 edge in shots during the match, and a

The win puts the Corsairs back into the race for the final spot in the

GORHAM , Maine -- Senior midfielder Jen Young (Middlebury, Vt.) broke a
1-1 tie with 5:31 left in regulation time to give the University of Southern
Maine Huskies a 2-1, come-from-behind victory over the University of Maine at

The win was the third straight for the Huskies, who moved back within a
game of .500 at 6-7-0. UMF suffered just its third loss of the season, falling
to 9-3-0.
With the match tied at 1-1, Young calmly took a short cross from junior
forward Erin Garland (Westbrook, Maine) and headed the ball six yards out past
UMF junior goalkeeper Alyson Pontbriand (Auburn, Maine) for her third goal, and
second game winner, of the season. Garland had won a loose ball and beaten a
UMF defender along the end line before making the cross to Young.

when her long, curving, left-footed shot from just outside the 18-yard box found
its way inside the far post. The goal was Loomis' fourth of the season.
After a rather defensive-minded, scoreless first half that featured a lot
of midfield play, the Beavers went up 1-0 six minutes into the second half.
Junior midfielder Shannon Mailhot (Westbrook, Maine) forced a miscue in the USM
back, and junior forward Richelle Dube (Lewiston, Maine) collected the loose
ball, made one move to create a shooting angle, and knocked a 12-yard shot past
USM sophomore keeper Rachel Kwantz (Wiscasset, Maine).

save. Pontbriand turned aside three shots. Southern Maine had an 11-5 edge in

(Camden, Maine) found the back of the net just 51 seconds into the game.
Garland first goal at 4:55 made it 2-0. Both markers were unassisted.
Loomis scored the first of her two goals, off an assist from rookie
Jennifer Kelley (Pepperell, Mass.), at 35:54. Loomis added a penalty kick
before the half, giving the Huskies a comfortable 4-0 cushion at the break.
Sophomore Alicia Salois (Berwick, Maine), set up by freshman Amanda
Valeriani (South Portland, Maine), scored 46 second into the second half.
Junior Molly Tanguay (Yarmouth, Maine) and Garland scored ten minutes apart
midway through the half for the final score.
Three USM goalies, freshman Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.), sophomore Rachel
Kwantz (Wiscasset, Maine) and freshman Jamie Wood (Sedgwick, Maine), combined
for the shutout. Ansley had two saves in the first 53 minutes of play before
giving way to Kwantz who made one save. Wood played the final eight minutes and
was not credited with a save.
St. Joseph's goalie Kristen Gaudette had eight saves for the Monks.

Skidmore Blanks Southern Maine, 1-0
SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. -- Sarah Ingrahm's goal in the first half stood
up as the Skidmore College Thoroughbreds handed the University of Southern Maine
Huskies their first defeat of the season, 1-0, in the championship match of the
Skidmore College Invitational tournament Sunday afternoon.
Skidmore, which beat Mt. St. Mary College, 2-0, in its first game Friday
night, improved to 2-0-0. Southern Maine, which opened the season with wins
over Framingham State and Mt. St. Mary College, slipped to 2-1-0.
Ingrahm converted off a restart taken by Hillary Trojano. Ingrahm
corralled Trojano's pass, then popped a shot over the charging USM goalkeeper,
freshman Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.). The goal came at 27:37.
The Huskies, who played very ineffective in the first half (one shot)
according to head coach Steve Quinones, dominated the second half. USM had
excellent opportunities in the final ten minutes of regulation to tie the match,
but Skidmore keeper Vicki Grilli (Londonderry, N.H.) stopped rookie Amanda
Loomis' (Poultney, Vt.) bid with about three minutes to play, and junior Erin
Garland's (Westbrook, Maine) shot in the 80th minute just sailed wide. The
Huskies held the Thoroughbreds without a shot in the second half.
Grilli finished the match with five saves while Ansley was credited with
two stops. USM had a 12-7 edge in shots and a 6-1 margin in corner kicks.
Southern Maine will look to rebound on Wednesday (September 12) when it
travels to St. Joseph's College for a 4:00 p.m. match. Skidmore is off until
Friday when it travels to Clarkson.

Garland's Goal Lifts Huskies Past Rams, 2-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Erin Garland (Westbrook, Maine) made her
first match as a member of the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's
soccer team a memorable one, scoring in the 79th minute to give the Huskies a
2-1 win over the visiting Framingham State College Rams Tuesday night under the
lights at the Gorham High School soccer field.
The match, originally scheduled for USM's home field, was moved to Gorham
HS after a thundershower moved through the southern Maine area, pushing back the
starting time to 6:30 p.m. USM's home field does not have lights.
Garland, who transferred to USM from St. Lawrence University, took a short
through pass from junior forward Abbie Leonard (Camden, Maine), dribbled into
the box and beat Rams' senior goalkeeper Kristina Kern (West Barnstable, Mass.)
with a low shot to the far side.
Southern Maine had taken a 1-0 lead in the 70th minute when junior
midfielder Molly Tanguay (Yarmouth, Maine) hit a shot from outside the box that
hit the right post and deflected in off the sprawled Kern. Junior midfielder
Jenny Boucher (Madawaska, Maine) was credited with the only assist.
The Rams got back even in the 74th minute, benefiting from an own goal. A
long diagonal pass into the box was deflected by an USM defender past freshman
keeper Marcy Ansley (Hudson, Mass.) who was caught moving the other way.
Ansley finished the night with three saves while Kern made four saves for
the Rams. Southern Maine had an 11-7 edge in shots and a seven-three margin in
corner kicks.
Framingham State, last year's MASCAC champion and 15th ranked in the first
NSCAA regional poll, slipped to 0-2-0. The game was the season opener for
Southern Maine which was ranked 13th this week. The Huskies return to action
this weekend traveling to New York to play in the Skidmore College Invitational
Saturday and Sunday.

USM Names Women's Soccer Captains
Huskies Open Season Tuesday Hosting Framingham State
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine seniors Jamyn Mooney, Tina
West and Jen Young have been named tri-captains of the Huskies' women's soccer
team for the upcoming 2001 season. Fourth-year head coach Steve Quinones made
the announcement last week during the team's preseason training camp.
The Huskies, who returned 12 players for last year's squad, open their 16-
game schedule Tuesday (September 4) afternoon, hosting Framingham State College
in a 4:30 match at the USM soccer field.
Both teams finished the 2000 season among the top 15 teams in the final
NSCAA New England Region poll. Framingham State, which went to NCAA tournament,
was ranked 11th with a 14-2-2 record. Southern Maine, which made its first
postseason tournament appearance since 1986 when it was selected for the ECAC
tournament, was 13th with a 12-8-0 mark.
Mooney (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), a second-year midfielder, had three
assists in 17 games during her initial season with the Huskies.
"In the short time that (Jamyn) has been with us, she has quickly gone
from a transfer to a dependable captain. What makes her a great captain is that
the other players trust and respect her, and she puts the team's best interests
in front of her own interests," commented Quinones, who has guided the Huskies
to three straight .500 or better records.
West (Gorham, Maine), a fourth-year defender, scored a goal and had one
assist while playing in all 20 games. She has appeared in 51 games during her
career.
"Tina embodies what today's student-athlete should aspire to. She's
always very supportive of all her teammates. She (and Young) has been with the
team for three years, and it's her commitment to the program and her teammates
that made her a natural captain," said Quinones. West also was a tri-captain of
the Huskies' softball team last spring.
Young (Middlebury, Vt.), a fourth-year midfielder, scored two goals and
had one assist for five points in 17 games last season. The 5-foot-10 Young was
selected as the most valuable player at the Kwik Goal/T.G.I.Friday's Classic at
Muhlenberg College, and was named the Little East Conference Player of the Week
for her efforts. In her first three seasons, Young has scored three goals,
including one game winner, and had four assists for 10 points in 48 games.
"Over the past three seasons, Jen has had to battle some injuries. But,
when she's fit, she has shown that she can be one of the top midfielders in our
conference. She has a natural soccer talent and the ability to lead," added
Quinones. Young was among the nation's Division III women's lacrosse leaders in
goals scored last spring.
After Tuesday's opener, the Huskies will travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y.,
to play in the Skidmore College Invitational Tournament this weekend (Sept. 8-
9). USM will tangle with Mt. St. Mary's College (Newburgh, N.Y.) on Saturday,
then battle Skidmore on Sunday.
The remainder of the Huskies' 2001 schedule is as follows: Sept. 12, at
St. Joseph's College (4:00); Sept. 15, Western Connecticut (12:00); Sept. 18,
at Bates (4:00); Sept. 22, at Rhode Island College (1:00); Sept. 27, at Colby
(4:00); and Sept. 29, Keene State (12:30).
Also Oct. 3, at Bowdoin (4:30); Oct. 6, UMass Boston (1:00); Oct. 8,
University of New England (1:00); Oct. 11, UMaine Farmington (3:30); Oct. 13,
UMass Dartmouth (1:00); Oct. 16, Plymouth State (3:30); and Oct. 20, at
Eastern Connecticut.
The Little East Conference playoffs will begin Oct. 23 with a pair of
first round games. The semifinal matches will take place on October 26, and the
championship match will be played at 12 noon on October 28. All games will be
at the on-campus site of the higher seeded team.
