Sara Marzouk Named USM Women's Cross Country Captain
GORHAM, Maine - Senior cross country and track and field standout Sara
Marzouk (Wilder, Vermont/Hartford) has been named the captain of the University
of Southern Maine Huskies women's cross country team for the fall of 2005.
Veteran head coach George Towle made the announcement.
Marzouk earned All-Little East Conference and All-New England Alliance
honors in 2004 pacing the Huskies to a second place finish in the Little East
Conference and New England Alliance Championship meet. Marzouk finished fifth
in the Little East Conference championship and finished sixth in the New England
Alliance competition with a time of 19:08 to lead USM.
"Sara has natural athletic ability," noted Towle who begins his 21st season
as the Huskies' mentor. "She has been one of our top indoor and outdoor track
athletes over the last three seasons and that is a direct correlation to her
work ethic. Last season was her first year as a member of the cross-country
team, and it was a valuable learning experience and a building block for her
future success. Sara is still growing as a runner. If she maintains her steady
progress, she should be a contender for one of the individual berths at the NCAA
Cross Country Championships."
Marzouk finished as the Huskies top runner in five out of the six races she
competed in during the 2004 season, including a first-place finish overall at
the Roger Williams Invitational. Marzouk covered the 5,000-meter course in
20:05 to take the top spot and earn her first-ever race victory. For her
performance, Marzouk was named the LEC Runner of the Week.
In addition to Marzouk, the Huskies also return four of its top runners
from a year ago, including senior Colleen Dolbec (Shapleigh, Maine/Massabesic),
juniors Sara Benedetto (Jay, Maine/Jay) and Jennifer Oliver (Danvers,
Mass./Danvers) and sophomore Elizabeth Trask (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook).
Dolbec placed 14th in the LEC championship last season, while Trask finished
21st in her first conference championship.
Marzouk and the Huskies will kick off their 2005 campaign tomorrow with
their annual meet against the alumni. They return to action September 17 (11:15
a.m.) at the UMass Dartmouth Invitational. The Huskies will compete in one more
meet in September, traveling to Boston for the Harrier Classic in Franklin Park
on September 24.
USM has four dates of competition in October, including the UMaine
Farmington Invitational (Sat., Oct. 1), New England Championships (Sat., Oct.
8), the State of Maine Championship (Sat., Oct. 15) and the Little East
Conference/New England Alliance Championship meet (Sat., Oct. 29).
In November, USM will compete in the ECAC Division III Championship (Nov.
5) and the NCAA Regional Championship (Nov. 12). Qualifying teams and
individuals will then compete in the NCAA National Championship (Nov. 19).
