Julie Plant Named Second Team Softball All-American
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore catcher-outfielder Julie Plant (Gorham, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team has been named to the 1998 Louisville
Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-American second team as the utility
player. The three NFCA All-American teams are picked by coaching representatives from across
the country.
Plant was among the fifty NCAA Division III softball players in the nation selected for the
NFCA All-American first, second and third teams. She is the first Southern Maine player to receive
All-American honors at the national level.
This past season, Plant hit .417 with 14 doubles, eight triples, two home runs, 38 RBI, 23
stolen bases, 63 base hits and 47 runs scored in 45 games. She set school single season records
for at bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, total bases and RBI. It was announced Tuesday (May
12) that she had been named the Little East Conference Player of the Year and a first team all-star.
The Huskies have had 14 regional All-Americans previously, including five first, second and
third team picks this year. This year's five regional All-Americans were the program's first since
present head coach Bonny Brown-Denico was named a regional All-American in 1991. Only first
team regional All-Americans are eligible for national honors.
Southern Maine's other four Northeast Region All-Americans this year included senior
outfielder Meredith Bradley (Norridgewock, Maine), freshman pitcher Erica Gagnon (Oakland,
Maine), sophomore designate player June LaVallee (Sidney, Maine) and senior outfielder Katy
Stebbins (Winthrop, Maine). Bradley was a first team honoree along with Plant. Gagnon and
LaVallee were named to the regional second team while Stebbins received third team honors.

Huskies Eliminated from NCAA Softball Regional
ALMA, Mich. -- Sophomore right-hander Jen Segner (Marysville, Ohio) scattered five
singles and senior right fielder Heather Shingary (Cambridge, Ohio) blasted her 11th home run
of the season to lead the Muskingum College Lady Muskies to a 3-1 victory over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies in Game Four of the NCAA Division III Central Regional Softball
Tournament at Alma College. The loss was the Huskies' second of the tournament and eliminated
them from the five-team, double-elimination event.
The loss ends the Huskies record-setting season with a 28-18-1 overall record. This was the
Huskies first-ever trip to the NCAA tournament. Muskingum, which lost its first game Thursday to
Mount Union College, improves to 32-12 and will play Calvin (Mich.) College later Friday afternoon
in Game Six.
Segner and Huskies' freshman Erica Gagnon (Oakland, Maine) were matching scorelesss
innings until the third when the Lady Muskies pushed across a run on senior Angie Knisley's
(Somerset, Ohio) double off the fence in right-center field. Senior Kelli Enyart (Columbus, Ohio)
had led off with a single, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Julie Ryan
(Steubenville, Ohio) before Knisley's shot.
Shingary made it 2-0 in the fifth with a long drive over the left field fence for her 11th round
tripper of the season. The Lady Muskies added an insurance run in the sixth when Enyart beat out
a two-out bunt single that scored freshman Tangie White (Mt. Vernon, Ohio) from third.
Southern Maine, which had been no-hit in yesterday's first round game against Calvin
(Mich.) College, wasted little time getting its first hit of the tournament when junior third baseman
Danielle DeGraw (Bristol, Vt.) singled in the first.
The Huskies put runners on base in every inning but the third, but were unable to push
across a run until the sixth when sophomore June LaVallee (Sidney, Maine) scored on a wild
pitch. A big defensive play at second base by Knisley on senior Meredith Bradley's
(Norridgewock, Maine) hard, one-out ground ball to her left kept the Huskies from a potential big
inning.
Sophomore Michelle Cloutier (Whitefield, Maine), who had three of the Huskies' five
singles, led off the seventh with her third hit, but was stranded as Segner got the next three hitters
on two fly ball and a ground out.
Gagnon surrendered ten hits and one walk while striking out five as her record slipped to 14-
6. Segner did not walk a batter and struck out two to gain her 23rd victory of season against just five
losses.
"We played much better today," said Huskies' head coach Bonny Brown-Denico. The
Huskies had problems getting to Alma due to weather on the East coast Wednesday and had to
play their first game against Calvin just 10 hours after arriving. "We had some chances, but too
many of our opportunities came with two outs, and we just weren't getting the big hits we needed to
score."

Koolhaas No-Hits Huskies in NCAA 1st Round Action
ALMA, Mich. -- Senior right-hander Shauna Koolhaas (Escondido, Calif.) threw the
eighth no-hitter of her career to lead the Calvin College Knights of Grand Rapids, Mich., (20-17) to
an 8-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies (28-17-1) in the first round of the NCAA
Division III Central Regional Softball Tournament.
The win moves Calvin into Thursday's third game against top-seeded, and tournament host,
Alma College. The Huskies drop into the loser's bracket of the five-team, double-elimination
tournament against the loser of the game between second-seeded Muskingum College and third-
seeded Mount Union College Friday morning at 11:00 a.m.
Koolhaas, who came into the game in second place on the NCAA's all-time Division III lists
for career victories, innings pitched, strikeouts and appearances, was overpowering against the
sluggish Husky bats. A three-time All-American, she did not walk a batter and struck out six, and
allowed only one runner to reach base on an infield error in the fifth inning. It was the first time that
Southern Maine has been no-hit since March 23, 1997 when the Huskies were held hitless by St
Mary's University of St. Paul, Minn.
Overshadowed by Koolhaas' performance was the four-hit, four-RBI day for freshman center
fielder Rhoda Volkers (Zeeland, Mich.). Volkers had an RBI double in the first, and RBI triple in
the third, an RBI double in the fifth, and her RBI double in the sixth ended the game on the eight-run
rule.
"She (Koolhaas) seemed to change speeds on every pitch and had our hitters off balance the
entire game," said Southern Maine head coach Bonny Brown-Denico. "Our catcher (Julie Plant)
said that it didn't matter where we pitched their hitters, they hit it hard."
The only Husky player to reach base was senior Katy Stebbins (Winthrop, Maine) whose
one-hop grounder was not flagged down by junior shortstop Jen Coleman (Escondido, Calif).
Senior Paula Reed (Rockland, Maine) took the loss for the Huskies. Reed surrenderred ten
hits, walked one, hit a batter and struck out one as her record slipped to 14-9. .
Brown-Denico felt her team played nervous, particularly in the first inning when the Huskies
committed two errors, and downplayed the Huskies' late arrival (1:30 a.m. Thursday morning) for
her team's sluggish play. The team's flight plans to Michigan were hampered due to fog and bad
weather on the East coast. The Huskies were originally scheduled to fly from Portland to Chicago,
and then on to Saginaw, Mich., which is 30 miles east of Alma. Instead, the team went from Portland
to Newark, N.J., then on to Chicago where they had an eight-hour layover before finally getting into
Saginaw.

double, scored when sophomore Stacy Dube's (Milton Mills, N.H.) single was misplayed in the
outfield allowing Manson to score.

Salem State Sweeps Southern Maine
SALEM, Mass. -- Salem State College Vikings pitchers Colleen Parker (Lynn, Mass.) and
Chris Gurskis (Brockton, Mass.) limited the University of Southern Maine Huskies to just nine hits
over 14 innings as the Vikings swept the non-league softball doubleheader Monday afternoon by
scores of 3-1 and 5-2.
The double dip leaves the Huskies with an overall record of 24-16-1 heading into their Little
East Conference tournament first round game with the University of Massachusetts Boston at
Towers Field on Wednesday. Salem State improves to 17-8.
The Huskies, who went into the doubleheader hitting .319 as a team, could only solve
sophomore Parker's pitches for four hits in the first game. Southern Maine pushed across its lone
run in the second inning when senior Katy Stebbins (Winthrop, Maine) scored from third as
sophomore Michelle Cloutier (Whitefield, Maine) was being thrown out trying to steal second.
Salem State scored twice in the first against USM senior right-hander Paula Reed
(Rockland, Maine) on RBI hits by junior Karen Masiello (Framingham, Mass.) and senior Lee
Ann Kehoe (Salem, Mass.). The Vikings added an insurance run in the third on Kehoe's two-out
RBI single.
In the second game, Gurskis, a junior, limited the Huskies to five hits while the Vikings made
the most of their seven hits to snapped USM freshman pitcher Erica Gagnon's (Oakland, Maine)
ten-game winning streak. Freshman Jeannette Gordon (East Boston, Mass.) pushed across the
Vikings' first run with a sacrifice fly in the first. Junior Lori Dudevoir (Tyngsboro, Mass.) plated

hit shutout in the second game of a softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon to salvage a split for
the short-handed University of Southern Maine Huskies against the University of Maine Farmington
Beavers.
UMF snapped the Huskies' seven-game winning streak in the first game coming from behind
to win 6-4. Gagnon's masterpiece gave the Huskies an 8-0 win in the second game.

Cloutier (Whitefield, Maine) followed with a two-run double. Cloutier scored the fourth run when
sophomore Michelle Fernald (Portland, Maine) singled and then was caught in a rundown between
first and second.
The lead was short-lived as the Beavers came back with five runs in the bottom half of the
inning. Junior Stacy Pinkham (Sebago Lake, Maine) knocked in the first run with a double and
classmate Michelle LaPointe (Auburn, Maine) slammed a bases loaded triple three batters later to
tie the score. Freshman pitcher Denelle Surnam (Madison, Maine) put her club ahead scoring
LaPointe with a sacrifice fly to right.
In the nightcap, the Huskies again jumped out quickly with four runs in the first, and added

Softball Huskies Sweep Panthers
PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies pounded out 31 hits against
three Plymouth State College pitchers on the way to a doubleheader sweep of the Panthers
Tuesday afternoon in Little East Conference action at D & M Park. The Huskies won the first game

are off until they play UMass Dartmouth on Saturday.
Southern Maine jumped out quickly in the first game scoring six times in the second inning.
Senior Katy Stebbins (Winthrop, Maine) and sophomore Michelle Cloutier (Whitefield, Maine)

Maine sent 16 batters to the plate collecting nine hits and a walk, and benefited from four Panther
errors. Eight of USM's nine batters collected two or more hits during the game which ended after
five innings on the eight-run rule.
Freshman Erica Gagnon (Oakland, Maine) picked up her fifth win of the season against four
losses. She allowed seven hits and one walk while striking out four. Sophomore Jen Moulton (Bow,

Softball Huskies Come From Behind Twice to Sweep Eastern Connecticut
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman June LaVallee (Sidney, Maine) banged out five hits and
senior Paula Reed (Rockland, Maine) picked up the win in both games as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies came from behind twice to sweep the Eastern Connecticut State
University Warriors, 8-7 and 6-5, in a Little East Conference softball doubleheader Saturday
afternoon at Towers Field.
The sweep improves the Huskies' overall mark to 11-10-1, and 5-1 in Little East play.
Eastern Connecticut, which lost its first two Little East games of the season, dips to 15-8 overall and
8-2 in the conference.
In the first game, the Huskies rallied from a 7-4 deficit with four runs in the sixth to take the
victory. LaVallee ignited the one-out rally with a base hit and eventually scored on a double steal.
Senior Katy Stebbins (Winthrop, Maine) tied the game with a two-out, two-run double. Stebbins
scored the go-ahead run when sophomore Michelle Cloutier's (Whitefield, Maine) greeted reliever
Karen Kaczynski (Harwinton, Conn.) with a single over second base.
Reed picked up her sixth win going the distance despite allowing 10 hits and walking five.
Sophomore Tracy Pendergast (Walpole, Mass.), the second of three EC pitchers, absorbed the loss.
Reed picked up the win in the second game working three innings in relief of starter Erica
Gagnon (Oakland, Maine). The senior right-hander allowed just three hits and walked none.
The Huskies rallied to tie the game at 4-4 in the fifth when senior Meredith Bradley
(Norridgewock, Maine) doubled to drive in freshman Amanda Kimball (Arundel, Maine) with the
run of the inning.
Kimball's groundout drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth, and LaVallee's RBI double added
what proved to be the game winning run.
Eastern Connecticut made things interesting in the seventh when junior Michelle DePault
(Coventry, Conn.), who had three hits in the second game, doubled to score junior Christy Pabon
(Southington, Conn.). Reed settled down to retire sophomore Katie Richard (Harwinton, Conn.) on
a popout with runners at second and third to end the ball game.

River Hawks Sweep Huskies
LOWELL, Mass. -- The University of Massachusetts Lowell River Hawks rode the strong
pitching of freshman Katie Barber (Haverhill, Mass.) in the first game and a 13-hit attack in the
second to sweep the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-1 and 12-4, in a softball
doubleheader Thursday afternoon at South Campus Field.
The double dip drops the Huskies' overall mark to 8-10-1. The Huskies return to action
Friday when they host Colby College for a single game at 4:00 p.m. UMass Lowell, an NCAA
Division Two institution, swept its first doubleheader in six tries this season and is now 10-13.
Barber spotted the Huskies a 1-0 lead in the first when sophomore Julie Plant (Gorham,
Maine) reached on an infield error and came home on senior Meredith Bradley's (Norridgewock,
Maine) double to left field. USM would get only one other hit, a lead-off single by sophomore
Michelle Cloutier (Whitefield, Maine) in the second, off Barber who walked two and struck out three.
UML nicked loser Paula Reed (Rockland, Maine) for two unearned runs in the third and a
single run in the fifth. Reed, now 5-3 on the season, allowed just six hits and three walks. She did
not strikeout anyone.
In the nightcap, the Huskies grabbed a quick 3-0 lead as they bunched five hits together in
the first inning. Plant, senior Katy Stebbins (Winthrop, Maine) and freshman Alyssa Anderson (New
Portland, Maine) had RBI base hits during the uprising.
The River Hawks came back with a pair of unearned runs in the second, and took the lead for
good in the third as sophomore Sarah Gagnon (Hudson, N.H.) hit the River Hawks first homer run of
the season, a solo shot that tied the score, and Amanda Hinchcliffe (Lawrence, Mass.) walked and
eventually scored on a wild pitch.
UMass Lowell put the game away with four runs in the fifth and four more in the sixth that
invoked the eight-run rule. Sophomore Rachel Ronnquist (Westboro, Mass.) was beneficiary of the
River Hawks' season-high 12-run outburst. She allowed six hits, only one over the final five innings,
and did not walk a batter while striking out three.
Freshman Erica Gagnon (Oakland, Maine) absorbed her fourth loss of the season.

FT. MYERS, Fla. -- Senior Paula Reed (Rockland, Maine) picked up her second win of the

pair of games Saturday in Ft. Myers, Fla.
The Huskies knock off the University of Chicago, 4-1, behind Reed's three-hit pitching in the
day's first game before dropping a 6-3 decision to Concordia College of Moorhead, Minn. The split
improves Southern Maine's record to 3-5 overall, and 3-2 in the last five games after an 0-3 start.

The only run she allowed was unearned.
The Huskies gave Reed all the support she needed taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning on an
RBI single by sophomore Julie Plant (Gorham, Maine) and a sacrifice fly by senior Meredith Bradley
(Norridgewock, Maine). USM added single runs in the third and seventh innings taking advantage
of a pair of Chicago passed balls.
The Huskies were clinging to a 2-1 in the second game against Concordia when the team
from Moorhead, Minn., scored five times in the top of the seventh inning on a three-run home run by
junior Heidi Mueller and, two batters later, junior Allison Haaland hit a two-run shot. Four of the five
runs were unearned as the Huskies made three errors in the inning.
Freshman Eric Gagnon (Oakland, Maine) was the tough-luck loser for USM allowing just
seven hits and one walk while striking out five.
The Huskies were nursing a 2-1 lead after scoring twice in the second inning. Freshman
Alyssa Anderson (New Portland, Maine) drove in the first run when her hard hit ground ball was not
fielded. Anderson continued to circle the bases as the ball found its way between two outfielders
and rolled all the way to the wall.
