University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team was named the Little East
Conference Rookie of the Year and veteran head coach Bonny Brown-Denico was

and posted a .537 slugging percentage. Playing every position in the field
except shortstop, pitcher and right field, Dixon recorded a .925 fielding
percentage with 64 putouts and 22 assists.
Transferring to Southern Maine from Dean College, Grondin had an immediate
impact in the circle and at the plate. Grondin finished the season with a 15-10
record with a pair of shutouts. As USM's top pitcher, Grondin allowed 81 earned
runs in 171.2 innings pitched for a 3.30 ERA with 87 strikeouts.
Offensively, Grondin provided the Huskies with power, batting .361 (44 for
122). She led the team with 36 RBI, rapped out 16 doubles and five home runs,
and had a team-high .615 slugging percentage. Grondin's 16 doubles established
a new single-season record, while her RBI and home run (5) totals are second
most for a season.
Brown-Denico is the LEC Coach of the Year for the third time in her 12
years leading the USM softball team (1997, 1998 and 2007). The all-time
winningest coach in the 31-year history of the program, Brown-Denico has

Region honors for the second straight year, Lachapelle completed the finest

Brown-Denico. "From her first season, she has been committed to improving her
overall game and to the success of the team. She is one the most intelligent
players that I have coached in my career. On top of her tremendous athletic
ability, Christen's intangible characteristics were what truly made her an
invaluable member of the team."
Southern Maine finished its season with a 19-22 overall mark and an 8-6
record in the Little East Conference.

Keene State Shuts Out Southern Maine 5-0
Huskies Eliminated from Little East Tournament
PROVIDENCE, R. I. -- Keene State junior pitcher Ashlee Nicholson
(Swanzey, N.H.) scattered four hits over seven innings to lead the second-seeded
Keene State College Owls to a 5-0 win over the fifth-seeded University of
Southern Maine Huskies in an elimination game of the 2007 Little East Conference
Championship tournament Friday afternoon at Dayna A. Bazar Field in Providence,
Rhode Island. Rhode Island College, the top-seed in the tournament, is hosting
the six-team double-elimination conference championship.
The loss eliminates the Huskies and concludes their season with a 19-22
overall record. Keene State College improved to 26-6 overall.
In other games played Friday, Rhode Island College eliminated Eastern
Connecticut State University in eight innings, 3-2. Western Connecticut State
University blanked Keene State in the second game, 2-0, before the Owls staved
off elimination by beating the Huskies. In the final game, Western Connecticut
remained unbeaten by shutting out Rhode Island College 2-0.
Keene State and Rhode Island College will play Saturday at 10:00 a.m. with
the winner advancing to play Western Connecticut for the championship. The
Keene State-RIC winner must beat Western Connecticut twice to win the title.
Against USM, Keene State took the lead in the bottom of the second inning
and never relinquished it as senior Kari Gardner (Grafton, Mass.) belted a two-
out RBI double to left field to score sophomore Allie D'Amato (Bristol, Conn.).
D'Amato reached base safely stroking a single for one of her two hits in the
game.
Keene State added to its lead with a run in the fourth on a D'Amato single
that scored sophomore Katie Allenson (Clifton Park, N.Y.). Allenson had reached
on an error.
Junior Kaity Conklin (Selkirk, N.Y.) put the game out of reach crushing a
two-run triple into the right-center field gap to put the Owls ahead 4-0.
Conklin's hit scored junior Melissa Scata (Medway, Mass.) and junior Julia May
(Deep River, Conn.). May gave the Owls their final run of the game in the sixth
inning when she connected on an RBI single.
Nicholson earned her 14th win of the season to improve to 14-1 overall.
Fanning eight batters, Nicholson did not allow a USM base runner past second
base. USM junior pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) took the loss
allowing five runs on 13 hits to go along with three strikeouts. With the loss,
Grondin concludes the season with a 15-10 record.
Senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine) was the only USM batter to
register multiple hits off of Nicholson, finishing the day 3-for-3.
The lone senior on this year's squad, Lachapelle finishes her stellar career in
the top ten of several statistical categories at USM. A career .342 hitter,
Lachapelle is the school record holder in games played (169) and at bats (529)
and is third in hits (182). She is second all-time in doubles (35), ninth in
triples (8) and 11th in runs batted in (63).
A two-time Little East Conference selection and a 2006 NFCA Division III All-
Region Third Team selection, Lachapelle also set the school record for career
assists with 280. During her senior season, she also established a single
season mark for assists with 103 in 41 games. '
In 2007, Lachapelle hit .392 with 51 hits in 130 at bats with nine doubles

Southern Maine Stays Alive In LEC Tournament
Huskies Fall to Keene State 2-1 in Opener; Down Plymouth State 4-2 to Survive
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine)
scattered four hits over seven innings to lead the fifth-seeded University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-2 win over the sixth-seeded Plymouth State
University Panthers in an elimination game in the final contest of the first day
at the Little East Conference Softball Championship Tournament Thursday
afternoon at Dayna A. Bazar Field in Providence, R.I. Top-seeded Rhode Island
College is hosting the six-team, double-elimination tournament.
With the win, Southern Maine eliminated Plymouth State from the tournament
and advanced to the second day of competition. The Huskies lost their first
game of the tournament, 2-1, to the second-seeded Keene State College Owls.
With the split, USM stands at 19-21 overall and will face the loser of the Keene
State-Western Connecticut State University game on Friday (2:00 p.m.) in another
elimination game.
Grondin earned her 15th win of the season striking out five and giving up
two unearned runs as the Huskies committed five errors in the game. Grondin was
solid at the plate for the Huskies finishing the game 1-for-3 with a double, a
run scored and an RBI. Grondin's double, her 16th of the season, set a USM
single-season record.
Southern Maine jumped out early striking for three runs in the first
inning, stroking four hits off of Plymouth State sophomore pitcher Courtney
MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H.). Senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale,
Maine/Hall-Dale) led off the inning with her team-leading fourth triple of the
season, and scored on a single down the right field line from sophomore Anita
Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle). Dixon crossed home plate on Grondin's
double, and Grondin later scored on the first of two RBI singles from sophomore
Sabrina Sevigny (Sanford, Maine).
Plymouth State cut the lead to 3-1 in the top of the third on an RBI
sacrifice fly from sophomore Rachel Pothier (Reading, Mass.). Pothier's fly
ball to center field plated sophomore Heather Bartolo (Derry, N.H.) who had
reached safely on an infield hit and advanced to third on a pair of errors.
The Huskies got the run back in the bottom of the inning, however, as
Sevigny singled up the middle to score junior Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New
Gloucester) who led off the inning with a double to right field and advanced to
third on a ground out to second base.
Plymouth State chipped away at the USM lead in the fifth inning, scoring an
unearned run as sophomore Leanne Barry (Auburn, N.H.) started the inning with a
walk and move to third on a sacrifice bunt and a ground out before coming home
on the Huskies fourth error of the game.
However, that was as close as the Panthers would get the rest of the way as
Grondin retired the side in order in the sixth inning and allowed just one base
runner in the seventh.
MacFarland (6-7) took the loss for Plymouth State giving up four runs
(three earned) on seven hits in three innings of work before being lifted for
freshman Beth Moretti (Woonsocket, R.I.). Moretti pitched well in relief firing
three hitless innings with a strike out and a walk.
In the first game, Keene State junior pitcher Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey,
N.H.) earned her 13th win of the season allowing one run on five hits to go
along with eight strikeouts as the Owls rallied from a 1-0 deficit to defeat USM
2-1.
Southern Maine grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Lachapelle singled
to lead off the game, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on an
RBI single from Grondin.
Grondin, who took the loss for USM, kept the Owls off of the scoreboard
until the third inning. Senior Kathleen Gambino (Freeport, N.Y.) singled and
later scored on a two-out triple to center field from sophomore Jenna Patnode
(Surry, N.H.) to notch the equalizer.
Keene State took the lead in the fourth inning. Junior Julia May (Deep
River, Conn.) led off with a triple to right field and scored on a RBI infield
single from sophomore Katie Allenson (Clifton Park, N.Y.).
The Huskies were unable to generate any offense the rest of the way as
Nicholson gave up just one hit and did not allow a runner to advance past second
base in the final three innings. Grondin was solid in the loss for USM,
yielding five hits without a walk while fanning four batters.
In other first round games played Thursday, top-seeded Rhode Island College
defeated Plymouth State, 2-0, and third-seeded Western Connecticut defeated
fourth-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University, 2-1. Action resumes Friday

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Sabrina Sevigny (Sanford, Maine) blasted a
two-out, two-run double to center field in the bottom of the seventh inning to
lift the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 5-4 win over the Keene State
College Owls in the second game of a Little East Conference softball

Keene State won the first game 4-3 behind the combined five-hit pitching
from junior Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H.) and senior Erin Fuoroli (Warwick,
R.I.).
With the split, USM improves to 8-6 in the Little East and 17-19 overall.
The loss in game two snapped a seven game win-streak for KSC which stand at 25-5

In the nightcap, Southern Maine, trailing 4-3, took advantage of some
timely hitting to earn the win. Senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale,
Maine) led off the inning with a double to right-center field and advanced to
third on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Katie Martell (Wilmington, Mass.). A
walk to sophomore Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine) gave the Huskies runners on

middle. D'Amato finished the game with three RBIs.
Junior pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) earned the win for the
Huskies allowing four runs on eight hits in 7.0 innings of work. Grondin gave

game in relief of starting pitcher Fuoroli. Fuoroli left the game in the fourth
inning with the score tied at 1-1. She gave up two hits and one run with a walk
and a pair of strikeouts.
In the first game, Keene State junior Melissa Scata (Medway, Mass.) blasted
a two-run home run over the left field fence in the third inning and sophomore
Katie Allenson (Clifton Park, N.Y.) had an RBI double in the fifth inning to
lead the Owls to a 4-3 win over the Huskies. Nicholson picked up her 11th win
of the season, allowing just three hits and two runs in five innings. Fuoroli
earned a save with 2.0 innings of relief.
Keene State led the Huskies from the start, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of
the first on an RBI double from junior Jessica Starkey (Keene, N.H.). The Owls

scoring double.
USM attempted a comeback and plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth
on four hits. Lachapelle led off with a double and scored on a single from
Martell before Nicholson was lifted for Fuoroli. Fuoroli gave up a single to

Southern Maine Sweeps Plymouth State 5-3 and 9-7
PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Junior Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) combined for a
5-for-8 effort at the plate with three RBI to lead the University of Southern
Maine Huskies to a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep of the Plymouth
State University Panthers Tuesday evening at D & M Park in Plymouth, N.H.
Southern Maine earned a 5-3, come-from-behind win in the opener and then claimed
a 9-7 victory in the nightcap for the sweep.
With the pair of wins, Southern Maine improves to .500 overall at 16-16 and
moves to 7-5 in the Little East Conference. Losers of its last five games,
Plymouth State drops to 11-14 overall and 3-5 in conference action.
Grondin produced at the plate and in the circle for the Huskies earning her
12th win of the season in the first game. Grondin (12-6) held Plymouth State to
three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and a walk in seven
innings of work. She also helped her own cause at the plate going 2-for-4,
including her fourth home run of the season, with two RBI.
Southern Maine trailed 3-1 after five innings, but knotted the score up
with two runs in the top of the sixth. After a one-out double from sophomore
Katie Martell (Wilmington, Mass.) and a single from sophomore Anita Dixon
(Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle), Grondin singled to score Martell. The Huskies
pulled even with the Panthers on an RBI ground out from freshman Magan Blais
(Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill).
After Grondin retired the Panthers in order in the sixth, the Huskies went
ahead 5-3 in the seventh. A single from junior Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New
Gloucester) and a double from senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale,
Maine/Hall-Dale) put runners on second and third with one out. Martell scored
Ross and moved Lachapelle to third with a sacrifice fly to right field, and
Dixon stroked an RBI single for a 5-3 USM advantage.
Plymouth State threatened in its final at bat, connecting on back-to-back
hits and drawing a walk to load the bases with just one out. Sophomore Rachel
Pothier (Reading, Mass.) led off the inning with a double and advanced to third
on a single from freshman C Kay LaBrie (Somersworth, N.H.) before Grondin got
the first out of the inning on a strikeout.
Junior Lori Pettengill (Holderness, N.H.) loaded the bases for the Panther
when she drew a walk. However, Plymouth State was unable to plate a run as the
Huskies used solid defense to prevent any damage. Southern Maine's Martell
threw out a runner out at home to record the Huskies' second out of the inning
and Grondin fanned the final Panther batter to seal the win.
Sophomore pitcher Courtney MacFarland (Hampstead, N.H.) allowed eight hits
and yielded a walk in 6.1 innings pitched in the loss.
In the second game, Southern Maine pounded out 13 hits, led by Grondin with
three, to take the 9-7 win. Sophomore Sarah Coonradt (Richmond, Maine) earned
her third win of the season, yielding seven runs on 12 hits and four walks.
Coonradt fanned a career-high seven batters in the win.
Both teams scored three runs in the fourth inning. Southern Maine struck
first using a two-run home run from sophomore Sabrina Sevigny (Sanford, Maine)
and an RBI ground out from junior Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine). Sevigny's
home run was the first of her career.
Plymouth State equaled the Huskies in the bottom of the inning on a bases
loaded walk to sophomore Leanne Barry (Auburn, N.H.) and a two-run single from
sophomore Heather Bartolo (Derry, N.H.).
Southern Maine regained the lead in its next at bat, however, scoring four
runs on five hits to take a 7-3 advantage. Dixon plated the first two runs with
a two-run double, while Grondin added an RBI single and Martell added a run-
scoring ground out in the inning.
Plymouth State took one run back in the bottom of the inning, on an RBI fly
ball to center field from Pothier. USM would take a 9-4 lead in the top of the
seventh on an RBI from sophomore Megan Ford (Mechanic Falls, Maine/Poland
Regional) and an run-scoring error.
Plymouth State rallied for three runs in its final at bat, rapping out five
hits, but fell short. Freshman Becca DiPietro (Portsmouth, N.H.) keyed the
Panther rally with an RBI single. LaBrie pulled her team to within two runs
when she connected on a two-run, two-out single, but Coonradt was able to get a
grounder to third base for the final out.
Plymouth State freshman pitcher Kat Roland (Norton, Mass.) took the loss
for the Panthers giving up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits in 4.1 innings
pitched.

Southern Maine Splits Doubleheader Against Western Connecticut
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle) was
hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning forcing
home the winning run to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-1
win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials in the second game
of a Little East Conference doubleheader Sunday at the USM Softball Field in
Gorham.

14-16 overall. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for the Colonials
who stand at 14-10 overall and 5-3 in conference action.
Sophomore Megan Ford (Mechanic Falls, Maine/Poland Regional) opened the USM
seventh inning with a single through the left side of the infield. Junior Dawn
Ross (Gray, Maine), who entered the game as a pinch runner, took second base on
a well-executed sacrifice bunt from junior Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine).
Slie got the second out of the inning fanning sophomore pinch hitter Shawna
Richard (North Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic). Ross advanced to third on a wild
pitch as Slie was intentionally walking senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale,
Maine/Hall-Dale) who was 3-for-3 in the game.
Junior Cortney Romyns (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy) came on in relief of
Slie and loaded the bases with an intentional walk to sophomore Katie Martell
(Wilmington, Mass.) to face Dixon. In a lengthy at bat, Dixon worked the count
to 3-2 before being hit by a pitch to force in Ross with the game-winning run.
Trailing 1-0 in the fifth inning, Southern Maine knotted the game up at 1-1
as, with two outs, Lachapelle singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and
scored on a double to left-center field by Martell.
Western Connecticut grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a lead-off
single by junior Brittany Finkeldey (Ivoryton, Conn./The Williams School), a
sacrifice bunt and an RBI double from junior Stacey DiMaggio (Hopewell Jct.,
N.Y./John Jay).
USM junior pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) scattered five hits
over seven innings and allowed just one run to pick up her 11th win of the
season. She did not walk a batter and struck out five.
Slie was the hard-luck loser, giving up just two runs on six hits in 6.2
innings of work. Slie recorded seven strikeouts in the loss with two walks.
In the first game, Slie was nearly untouchable earning her sixth win of the
season. She struck out eight with one walk en route to the no-hitter in a
spectacular five innings of work.
Western Connecticut took control early building a 7-0 lead in its first two
at bats and never looked back. Romyns plated two runs for the Colonials in
their opening at bat, stroking a two-out single, while DiMaggio cranked a two-
run single as part of a four-run second inning for the Colonials.
With Slie allowing just two base runners in the game, the Colonials scored
runs in the top of the fourth and the fifth to force the eight-run rule.
Sophomore Torrie Musselman (Torrington, Conn.) had a pinch-hit RBI ground out in
the fifth.
Southern Maine sophomore pitcher Sarah Coonradt (Richmond, Maine) was

Southern Maine Splits Doubleheader at UMass Boston
BOSTON -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team pounded
out 21 hits and scored 20 runs to take a 20-3, five-inning win over the
University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in the second game of a Little East
Conference doubleheader Friday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center in Boston.
UMass Boston held on for an 8-6 win in the first game despite a three-run
Southern Maine rally that fell short in the top of the seventh.
With the split, Southern Maine moves to 12-14 overall and remains at .500
in the LEC at 3-3. Earning its first conference win since April 4, 2004, UMass
Boston snapped a 45-game losing streak in conference play, and a 23-game winless
streak against Southern Maine. UMB stands at 5-11 overall and 1-7 in the LEC.
In the second game, junior pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) led
the Huskies from the circle and at the plate, driving in a team-high five runs
on a pair of hits, including a three-run home run during the Huskies 10-run
fifth inning. Grondin gave up three runs on seven hits to earn her ninth win of
the season. She struck out five batters and did not walk a batter in five
innings.
Grondin received plenty of offensive support in the win as the Huskies
connected on a season-best 21 hits. Sophomore Anita Dixon (Limington,
Maine/Bonny Eagle) and sophomore Shawna Richard (North Waterboro,
Maine/Massabesic) each were a perfect 4-for-4 for the Huskies. Freshman Magan
Blais (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill) had three hits. Richard drove in three runs
while Blais plated two.
UMass Boston freshman pitcher Amanda Cianciulli (Billerica, Mass.) took the
loss yielding 21 hits and 20 runs of which just 10 were earned as the Beacons
committed six defensive miscues.
In the first game, UMass Boston jumped back from an early 3-0 deficit to
score five runs in the bottom of the first inning. After a leadoff walk to
start the inning, the Beacons used a triple from junior pitcher Katherine Wall
(Arlington, Mass.), a double from sophomore Jenn Widener (Hyde Park, Mass.) and

Polar Bears Take First Game 5-4; Huskies Prevail 10-2 in Nightcap
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine) rapped out three
hits, including two doubles, and drove in a pair of runs as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies downed the Bowdoin College Polar Bears 10-2 in five
innings in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon
at the USM Softball Field in Gorham. Southern Maine dropped the first game to
Bowdoin 5-4 despite a valiant seventh inning comeback bid.
With the split Southern Maine moves to 11-13 overall. Bowdoin improves to
15-10 overall, snapping a six-game losing streak with its 5-4 win over the
Huskies in the opening contest.
In the second game with the scored tied 2-2 in the third inning, Southern
Maine plated six runs on four hits, two walks and an error to take control.
Sophomore Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine/Bonny Eagle) started the Husky
attack with an infield single and came around to score on a double by junior
pitcher Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine). Grondin, who advance to third on a
throw, crossed home plate as USM freshman Magan Blais (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill)
belted a double of her own down the left field line. A walk to sophomore
Sabrina Sevigny (Sanford, Maine) and a short single to right field from Hudspeth
loaded the bases for the Huskies. Sophomores Shawna Richard (North Waterboro,
Maine) and Megan Stanley (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) each drew RBI walks to
put USM ahead 7-2. Senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale)
drove in the Huskies final run of the inning on a sacrifice fly to right field.
Southern Maine forced the eight-run rule by scoring two runs in the fourth
inning on a Hudspeth double to right center field.
Grondin, who held Bowdoin scoreless over its final two at bats to earn the
win, escaped a sticky situation in the top of the fourth, getting three fly ball
outs after yielding back-to-back singles to freshman Lexa Crowley-Gottlieb
(Boston, Mass.) and sophomore pitcher Karen Reni (Ashland, Mass.) to start the
inning.
Bowdoin's Reni gave up 10 runs on 10 hits and four walks in the loss.
In the first game, Bowdoin jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first
inning and held on for the 5-4 win. Sophomore Alison Coleman (Lewiston, Maine)
connected on a monster three-run homer over the left field fence to account for
all the Polar Bears runs.
Bowdoin led 5-1 after a pair of run-scoring doubles in the top of the third
from freshman Clare Ronan (Jenkintown, Pa.) and junior Sarah Stern (Newport
Coast, Calif.). Bowdoin seemed to have the game in hand heading into the bottom
of the seventh as freshman pitcher Julia Jacobs (Ridgewood, N.J.) kept the USM
bats off balance through the first six innings.
However, USM struck for three runs their final at-bat. USM received a
triple from Lachapelle, a double from Grondin and a single from Blais in the
rally, but Jacobs was able to strike out the potential go-ahead run for the
final out and the win.
Jacobs fanned five batters and gave up just one walk and scattered 11 hits
over seven innings. USM sophomore pitcher Sarah Coonradt (Richmond, Maine) took
the loss yielding nine hits and five runs with one strikeout and a walk.

Bolduc's hit gave the Beavers a 3-2 win in the opening game. The Beavers
scored early and often to post an 11-0 win in the second game.
Winners of their last four games, the Beavers improve to 12-7-1 with the
sweep. Southern Maine drops to 4-10 overall.
In the opening game, Southern Maine took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the
fourth. Sophomore Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine) doubled to left field to lead
off the inning, and came around to score on a triple from sophomore Sabrina
Sevigny (Sanford, Maine). Dixon finished the game 3-for-3 at the plate with a
double and two singles.
Babson answered with two runs in the top of the fifth to pull ahead 2-1
following a clutch two-out, two-run, pinch-hit single through the left side of
the infield from sophomore Kaitlyn Clark (Ramsey, N.J.).
The Huskies tied the score in the bottom of the inning as junior pitcher
Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly to
center field by senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine). Grondin led
off the inning with a double to right field.
Bolduc's single came with two outs in the top of the sixth, scoring junior
Jess Byrn (Safety Harbor, Fla.) who reached safely with a single.
Babson senior pitcher Stacy Schlicht (Hillsborough, Calif.) was able to
keep the Huskies off the scoreboard in their final two at bats, retiring six
consecutive hitters after giving up a single to start the bottom of the sixth.
Schlicht (5-2), who relieve starting pitcher freshman Danielle Liska (Seymour,
Conn.), earned the win giving up no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.
Grondin (3-5) took the loss for USM yielding three runs on six hits in seven
innings.
In the second game, Byrn earned the win from the pitchers circle and drove
in three runs to lead Babson to a five-inning 11-0 win. Byrn fanned nine USM
batters and allowed just one-hit in five innings of work to improve to 4-2
overall.
Byrn, who finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate, drove in all three runs
when she smacked a three-run triple as part of a five-run fourth inning for the
Beavers. Byrn also received solid offensive support from Clark, who drove in
three runs on a double and a single.
USM freshman pitcher Danielle Potvin (Sabattus, Maine) took the loss giving
up 10 runs (six earned) on nine hits and two walks in three innings pitched.
She was relieved by sophomore Sarah Coonradt (Richmond, Maine) in the fourth
inning. Coonradt gave up one run on three hits in two innings.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) when it travels to
St. Joseph's College (Maine) for a non-conference doubleheader. Babson College

combined 4-for-6 at the plate and drove in six runs to lead the Rhode Island
College Anchorwomen to a Little East Conference softball doubleheader sweep of
the University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon at Dayna A. Bazar
Field. The Anchorwomen defeated the Huskies 8-0 in six innings in the first
game, then took a five-inning, 10-2 victory in the second game.

in the Little East. Suffering its fourth consecutive loss, Southern Maine dips
to 4-8 overall and 0-2 in conference action.
Clinging to a 1-0 lead through four-and-a-half innings, Alexander helped

smacked a three-run home run over the left field fence. With two outs and
runners on first and third, Alexander gave RIC a comfortable 4-0 lead with her
first home run of the season.
Rhode Island College crossed home plate four more times in the bottom of

Burgess (Uxbridge, Mass.) added an RBI double to left field.
Senior pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, Rhode Island) remained
undefeated earning her ninth win of the season, holding USM to just three hits
and fanning 10 batters. USM junior hurler Kristin Grondin (Sanford, Maine)
drops to 3-4 overall and was tagged for 10 hits in six innings of work.
In the second game, Rhode Island College jumped on top of USM freshman
pitcher Danielle Potvin (Sabattus, Maine) for four runs in five hits in the
first inning to roll to a 10-2 win.
Burgess led the RIC offensive attack, driving in three runs on two hits,
while Alexander and Lotti each recorded a pair of RBI.
Sophomores Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine) and Sabrina Sevigny (Sanford,
Maine) rapped out two hits apiece for Southern Maine.
RIC freshman pitcher Jenna Deveines (Lowville, N.Y.) earned her first
collegiate win for the Anchorwomen after relieving Riley in the third inning.
Deveines allowed four hits and two runs in three innings of work. Potvin took
the loss for the Huskies to fall to 1-3 overall. She was replaced by sophomore
Sarah Coonradt (Richmond, Maine) in the first inning. Coonradt gave up four
runs on four hits in 1.2 innings before being relieved by Grondin. Grondin
finished the game pitching 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits.

Huskies Fall to Colby and DePauw in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Freshman pitcher Megan Soultz (Carmel, Ind.) fired a
one-hitter to lead the undefeated DePauw University Tigers to a five-inning, 8-0
win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday afternoon at the Gene
Cusic Softball Classic at the Cape Coral Field Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Huskies also lost their first game of the day, 3-2, to the Colby
College Mules. With the two losses, USM concludes its spring break trip in
Florida at 4-6 overall. DePauw is 15-0, while Colby College improves to 4-1.
Soultz, who did not walk a batter, silenced the Huskies' bats, recording
eight strikeouts and forcing five ground outs. The only hit Soultz surrendered
was a two-out single to freshman India Lowe (Gloucester, Mass.) in the third
inning.
Soultz received solid offensive support from classmate Kaitlyn Davitt
(Carmel, Ind.) who finished the game 2-for-3 at the plate, including a solo home
run and three RBI.
The Tigers jumped ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the third inning, taking
advantage of three Huskies' errors in the infield. Davitt drove in two runs
when she singled up the middle.
In the first game, Colby scored two runs in the top of the fourth to
overcome a 2-1 deficit and then kept the Huskies at bay for the 3-2 victory.
Sophomore pitcher Alyssa Crowell (Gilford, N.H.) helped her own cause stroking a
one-out single to knot the score at two runs each. Crowell's single scored
senior Mikki Starr (Dunbarton, N.H.) who reached base safely after being hit by
a pitch, and advanced to third on an error and a sacrifice bunt. Freshman
Christine Gillespie (North Andover, Mass.) forced home the game-deciding run
when she drew a two-out walk with the bases loaded.
Southern Maine threatened to tie the score in the bottom of the seventh
when freshman Magan Blais (Sabattus, Maine) drilled a two-out triple down the
left field line, but Colby's Gillespie recorded the third out of the inning
making a quick stab at a hard struck line drive from sophomore Anita Dixon
(Limington, Maine) to thwart any thoughts of a USM comeback bid.
Dixon finished the game with three hits in four at bats. Junior Kristina
Grondin (Sanford, Maine) and Lowe each had a pair of singles for USM who out-hit
the Mules 9-4.
Crowell earned the win for Colby yielding nine hits over seven innings of
work while recording seven strikeouts. Grondin took the loss for USM giving up
one earned run on four hits.

Huskies Earn Two Wins; Down SUNY-Potsdam 8-3 and Oberlin 11-1
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball
team pounded out 19 hits in two games Monday to earn a pair of wins in the Gene
Cusic Classic at the Cape Coral Field Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. The Huskies
downed the SUNY-Potsdam Bears 8-3 in their opener, then exploded for 11 runs to
earn a five-inning, 11-1 victory over the Oberlin College Yeowomen.
With the pair of victories, USM evens its record at 4-4 overall. The Bears
drop to 1-3 while Oberlin remains winless at 0-3.
Against Oberlin, junior Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine) led the USM attack,
knocking in four runs with a 2-for-2 effort at the plate. Hudspeth drove in
three runs when she smacked a home run to right-center field to help stake the
Huskies a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Huskies added three runs
in the third and fourth innings en route to the five-inning win.
Sophomore Sabrina Sevigny (Sanford, Maine) and junior Kristina Grondin
(Sanford, Maine) added two and three hits, respectively. Sevigny drove in a
pair of runs on singles, while Grondin was 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Freshman pitcher Danielle Potvin (Sabattus, Maine) earned her first
collegiate victory, scattering five hits over five innings. With the win,
Potvin improves to 1-2 on the season. Oberlin sophomore Sophie Simon-Ortiz
(Berkeley, Calif.) gave up 11 runs, eight earned, on 11 hits.
In the opener, Southern Maine broke open a 2-1 game with six runs in the
top of the seventh to down the Bears 8-3. USM had trailed Potsdam 1-0 after the
first inning until the Huskies plated two runs in the top of the third on a
triple from senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine). Lachapelle's
triple scored sophomore Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine) and sophomore Megan
Stanley (Standish, Maine). Dixon reached on a walk while Stanley took first on
a fielder's choice grounder.
In the top of the sixth, USM started the inning with back-to-back singles
from Sevigny and sophomore Meghan Ford (Mechanic Falls, Maine). After a line-
drive double play, the Huskies scored all six of their runs with two outs.
Freshman Magan Blais (Sabattus, Maine) stroked a two-run single up the middle,
and sophomore Katie Martell (Wilmington, Mass.) lined a two-run triple to the
right-center gap to highlight the uprising.
Grondin pitched a smart game for the Huskies to earn her third win of the
season (3-2). She allowed just four hits in seven innings of work with a pair
of strikeouts. Sophomore Brittany Deno (Downsville, N.Y.) took the loss for the
Bears giving up five runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of work.

USM Splits, Downs Bethel in 8 Innings and Loses to Middlebury
FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Senior Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine)
knocked a single through the right side to drive in the game-winning run as the
University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Bethel University Royals 2-1
in extra innings Saturday at the Gene Cusic Classic at the Cape Coral Fields
Complex in Fort Myers, Florida.
In their second game of the day, the Huskies fell to the Middlebury College
Panthers 9-7. With the split, the Huskies are 2-4 overall. Middlebury College
evens its record at 1-1 with the win, while Bethel University drops to 10-4-1.
In the first game, Lachapelle's game-winning hit provided the Huskies with
the offense to support a solid pitching and defensive effort. With both
pitchers, junior Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) for USM and freshman Nea
Harkness (Winthrop, Minn.) for Bethel, hitting their targets, the game remained
scoreless through three and a half innings. Southern Maine was able to score
the first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning to break the
scoreless tie.
After two were out in the fourth, USM stroked three consecutive singles to
take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine) started by sneaking
the ball through the left side, then advancing to second on a single down the
left field line from freshman Magan Blais (Sabattus, Maine). Sophomore Sabrina
Sevigny (Sanford, Maine) lined a shot up the middle to score Dixon.
Grondin continued her solid pitching and was helped in the top of the sixth
by a spectacular diving catch in left field from sophomore Megan Stanley
(Standish, Maine) to start the inning. After the acrobatic catch from Stanley,
Grondin retired the next two batters she faced on ground outs.
Bethel rallied to force extra innings in the top of the seventh on a
leadoff triple from junior Laura Naig (Kasson, Minn.) and a single from freshman
Lauren Habisch (Stacy, Minn.). Southern Maine was able to limit the damage to
just one run as Grondin struck out the next batter she faced and retired the
final two on pop-ups to shortstop.
With the tiebreaker rule in effect, a runner was placed on second to start
the top of the eighth for Bethel. In their first at bat, the Royals used a
sacrifice bunt from junior Joslin Geisler (Grand Rapids, Minn.) to move the
runner to third. The Huskies continued to play solid defense as Lachapelle
fielded a grounder to short, faked a throw to first and caught the runner at
third with a throw to Blais. The play proved decisive as the Royals' next
batter connected for a single. With runners now on first and second with two
outs, Grondin notched her fifth strikeout of the game to retire the side.
In the bottom of the eighth, Stanley was able to move USM's runner to third
on a sacrifice bunt up the first baseline to set up Lachapelle's winning hit.
Grondin (2-1) earned her second consecutive win allowing just one run on
four hits in eight innings of work. Bethel's Harkness was the tough-luck loser
giving up two runs on seven hits while recording four strikeouts in 7.1 innings.
In the second game, Middlebury and Southern Maine combined for 23 hits as
the Panthers rapped out 14 hits off Grondin and plated three runs in the bottom
of the sixth to outlast the Huskies. Middlebury juniors Lily Hamburger (Silver
Spring, Md.) and Allison Bard (Jenkintown, Pa.) drove in three runs apiece to
pace the Panthers. Hamburger had three hits for Middlebury, including a home
run, while Bard was 4-for-4.
Southern Maine's Stanley was 3-for-3 against Middlebury with a double and a
home run, while Lachapelle added a pair of doubles and three RBI in the loss.

(Vassalboro, Maine) scored on a throwing error after reaching base safely with a
single.
USM answered in the bottom of the inning to earn the victory. Freshman
Magan Blais (Sabattus, Maine) started the inning with a single. She was
replaced on the base path by junior Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine) who advanced to
third on a throwing error on freshman Anita Dixon (Limington, Maine) grounder.
Ross then stole home, beating the throw at the plate by sliding under the tag as
the Huskies had a double-steal play in place. Southern Maine added an insurance
run after Hudspeth cranked a two-out triple to right field to score Dixon.
Junior Kristina Grondin (Sanford, Maine) earned her first pitching win in a
USM uniform to improve to 1-1 overall. Grondin limited the Terriers to just
three hits in seven innings of solid work. Grondin retired nine consecutive
batters from the start of the fifth inning.
Thomas junior Nickie Smith (Bucksport, Maine) took the loss for the
Terriers despite giving up just three hits and striking out seven batters.
In the second game, Hamline University took advantage of six USM errors to
earn a 8-0 win in a shortened game. Freshman Betsy Kralich (Virginia, Minn.)
drilled a three-run homer in the fifth inning to invoke the eight-run rule.
Senior Holly Wiborg (Chanhassen, Minn.) and freshman Brenna Healy (Mounds View,
Minn.) each had two hits for the Pipers. Dixon led Southern Maine offensively
