Wellesley Defeats Southern Maine 9-1
WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Sophomore Jenna Harvey (London, Ontario) earned her
tenth win of the season to lead Wellesley College to a 9-1 win over the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in a quarterfinal round game of the 2006
ECAC Division III New England Softball Championship Wednesday afternoon at
Wellesley College. The game was shortened to five innings due to the eight-run
rule.
With the win, Wellesley improves to 22-11 and advances to the four-team,
double-elimination finals. Wellesley will play the winner of the Emerson
College/Roger Williams University game. Emerson, the top seed in the
tournament, hosts Roger Williams, the eighth seed, on Thursday (May 12) at 4:00
p.m. Southern Maine concludes its season at 23-10.
Harvey (10-5) silenced the Southern Maine bats fanning ten and allowing
just one earned run on two hits in five innings of work. Southern Maine senior
Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy) took the loss giving up
nine runs on nine hits in four innings. Mainville (11-8) struck out two
batters.
Southern Maine took an early lead scoring the first run of the game in the
top of the first. Mainville drew a bases loaded walk to force home freshman
Sabrina Mills (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) with the Huskies' lone run of
the game.
Wellesley came right back with three runs of its own in the bottom of the
inning to take a 3-1 lead. An RBI double by Kara Wong (Milford, Mass.) plated
Amanda Tai (Melrose, Mass.) to knot the score up at 1-1. Wong took third on a
single from Harvey and came around to score on a wild pitch. Wellesley scored
its third run of the inning when Harvey crossed the plate on a Southern Maine
error.
In the third inning, Wellesley took a 4-1 on an RBI triple by freshman
Samantha Littlejohn (Dayton, N.J.) that scored Megan Sullivan (Unionville,
Ontario).
In the fourth inning, Harvey helped her cause at the plate and on the
bases, accounting for both of Wellesley's runs in the fourth inning. Harvey
knocked in Wellesley's first run with a two-out RBI double, and then came around
to score on a successful double-steal attempt. Harvey finished the game with
two hits in three at bats with an RBI.
In the fifth inning, Wellesley plated three more runs to invoke the eight-
run rule and seal the win. Tai drove in Wellesley's first two runs with a
single to right field before coming around to score the decisive run on a
fielder's choice from Ashley Bulseco (Princeton, Mass.)

Southern Maine Places Four on LEC All-Conference Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Four members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
softball team have been named to the All-Little East Conference team that was
announced today following a vote by the conference's eight coaches.
Named to the All-Little East Conference first team were senior pitcher
Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy) and junior shortstop
Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale). Selected to the second team
were freshmen pitcher Bree Loon (Jay, Maine/Jay) and outfielder Megan Stanley
(Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle)
"These four players all played a significant role in our team's success
during the season," said veteran head coach Bonny Brown-Denico. "Their
achievements on the field makes them very deserving of the honor."
A three-time selection to the LEC first team, Mainville has been one of the
Huskies' most dominant pitchers during her career. This season, Mainville has
thrown two no-hitters en route to an 11-7 record with a 1.11 ERA. She has
allowed 20 earned runs in 126 innings pitched while limiting opponents to a .180
batting average. Mainville, who has 175 strikeouts on the year, set a USM
record for strikeouts in a game, fanning 16 batters on two occasions.
For her career, Mainville has compiled a 40-19 record with 499 strikeouts,
which is second all time in USM history, and a school record 1.01 ERA, allowing
just 64 earned runs in 436.1 innings pitched.
Lachapelle has earned All-LEC recognition in each of her three seasons with
Southern Maine. One of the Huskies' offensive leaders, she leads the team in
batting with a .354 average, collecting 51 hits in 144 at bats. Lachapelle has
a team-leading 11 doubles, 15 RBI and a .479 slugging percentage.
Loon, who was named the LEC Rookie of the Week twice during the season,
stepped into the Huskies lineup and made an immediate contribution from the
pitcher's circle in her rookie season. The 5-3 southpaw has a 10-8 record,
including five shutouts, and was 4-3 against Little East Conference opponents.
Loon currently sports a 1.77 ERA, allowing 32 earned runs in 126.2 innings
pitched. Loon has fanned 110 batters, which is good for seventh all-time in USM
single season records, and limiting opposing hitters to a .248 batting average.
Stanley, one of seven freshmen on the Huskies' roster, saw considerable
playing time in the outfield. Appearing in 36 games, Stanley batted a solid
.265 , rapping out four doubles and driving in 11 runs. She also was third on
the team in stolen bases with seven.
Southern Maine, 23-20, finished second in the 2006 Little East Conference
Championship last weekend. USM earned a berth in the 2006 ECAC Division III New
England Softball Championships. The Huskies, the fifth seed in the tournament,
travel to Wellesley College on Wednesday (May 10) for a 4:00 p.m. game. The
winner of that game will advance to the semifinal and championship rounds of the
tournament on Friday and Saturday (May 12-13) at a site to be determined.

Rhode Island College Edges Southern Maine 2-1 to Win LEC Championship
PROVIDENCE -- Junior P Nicole Riley (North Providence, R.I./North
Providence) earned her 24th win of the season to help the top-seeded Rhode
Island College Anchorwomen win the 2006 Little East Conference Softball
Championship with a 2-1 decision over the fifth-seeded University of Southern
Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon at Dayna A. Bazar.
The Anchorwomen plated a run in the first and second innings and Riley was
able to make it stand up to earn the Anchorwomen their first LEC title and an
automatic bid into the 2006 NCAA Division III Softball Championship Tournament.
The Anchorwomen are now 33-8-1. The Huskies, making their fifth appearance in
the championship round of the tournament and looking for their first LEC title
since 1998, conclude their season with a 23-20 record.
Rhode Island College took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when
senior OF Andree Sitnik (Lincoln, R.I.), who was named tournament's Most
Outstanding Player, connected on an RBI double to deep left field that scored
junior C Kristyn Alexander (East Wareham, Mass.). Alexander reached on a single
to left field.
The Anchorwomen increased their margin to 2-0 in the second inning on a
pair of extra-base hits. Senior 2B Casie Lyons (Hudson, Mass.) stroked a double
to left and came around to score on sophomore 1B Christie Lotti's (Waterford,
Conn.) 10th triple of the year.
Southern Maine came back with a run in the top of the third on an RBI
single by freshman C Sabrina Mills (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy). Mills'
single drove in junior OF Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) who
reached on an error, then stole second to get into scoring position.
That was as close as the Huskies would get, however, as Riley continued to
stifle the Southern Maine bats at key points. Southern Maine threatened in the
fifth, putting two runners on with one out, and again in the seventh, loading
the bases with two outs. In the seventh, USM had consecutive two-out singles by
senior 2B Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy), Martin and
Mills, but Riley was able to pitch her way out of the jam forcing a pop-up to
end the threat and clinch the conference title.
Riley gave up one unearned run on seven hits without a walk while fanning
five batters. Southern Maine freshman P Bree Loon (Jay, Maine/Jay) pitched well
in the loss walking one and striking out one.

Southern Maine Downs UMass Dartmouth to Advance in LEC Championship
PROVIDENCE -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies softball team
cranked out 14 hits and rode another solid pitching effort from senior Katie
Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy) to earn a 4-3 win over the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in the third day of the Little
East Conference Softball Tournament Saturday morning at Danya A. Bazar Field in
Providence. The tournament is being hosted by Rhode Island College.
With the win, the fifth-seeded Huskies improve to 23-19 and advance to play
the top-seed Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in the championships round. The
loss eliminated the sixth-seeded Corsairs from the tournament. The Huskies, who
lost to the Anchorwomen on Friday 5-2, will have to defeat Rhode Island College
twice to capture the conference crown.
Mainville (11-7) remained undefeated in the tournament earning her 11th
victory of the season. Mainville yielded her first earned run of the tournament
giving up 10 hits and two walks over seven innings while striking out four
batters. In three games, Mainville has fanned 30 batters.
UMass Dartmouth freshman pitcher Amie Nickerson (Wrentham, Mass./King
Phillip) took the loss for the Corsairs, yielding two earned runs on 14 hits.
Nickerson (8-4) picked up just her fourth loss of the season after leading the
Corsairs to both of their wins in the tournament.
Southern Maine never trailed in the game. The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0
lead in its first at bat on a RBI sacrifice fly from senior 1B Caterina Riitano
(Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Community). Freshman DH Sabrina Mills
(Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) led off the inning with the first of her two
singles and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore 3B Dawn Ross
(Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester). Junior SS Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale,
Maine/Hall-Dale) moved Mills to third on the first of her three hits in the game
before Riitano connected on a fly ball to left field to plate Mills.
The Corsairs came right back in the top of the second inning to tie the
score at 1-1 when freshman OF Meghan Mansour (Methuen, Mass./Central Catholic),
who had reached on a fielder's choice, scored an unearned run on a USM error.
Southern Maine regained the lead in the bottom of the inning scoring two
unearned runs capitalizing on a single by Mainville and a pair of Corsair
defensive miscues.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth inning to make it 4-2. UMD freshman
1B Christine White (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) scored the Corsairs run
on a USM error after she singled to lead off the inning. White advanced to
second on a single by senior 2B Amanda Leal (New Bedford, Mass.), took third on
a fielder's choice and came home on an errant throw.
Southern Maine used an RBI bunt single from Ross to take back the run in
the bottom of the inning. Junior C Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region)
singled, stole second and advanced to third on a single by Mills before crossing
the plate on Ross's bunt.
The Corsairs pulled to within one in the sixth inning. Leal cranked an RBI
triple off the center field fence to score White who had walked leading off the
inning. With Leal on third with no outs, Mainville was able to strand her
getting the next three batters.
The Corsairs threatened again in the top of the seventh, Freshman C
Kathleen L'Abbe (New Bedford, Mass.) stroked a two-out double to center field
and junior Shallana Medina (Falmouth, Mass.) drew a pinch-hit walk, but
Mainville was able to force a foul ball pop out to end the game.

Little East Conference Tournament
Southern Maine Edges Keene State 1-0, Falls to Rhode Island College 5-2
PROVIDENCE -- Sophomore 2B Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy)
connected on a one-out single to center field in the bottom of the eighth inning
to lead the fifth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0 win over
the third-seeded Keene State College Owls in the first of two games for the
Huskies during second day of play in the 2006 Little East Conference Softball
Championship Friday. The tournament is being hosted at Danya A. Bazar Field by
Rhode Island College.
In their second game of the day, the Huskies fell to top-seed and host
Rhode Island College Anchorwomen 5-2.
USM now stands at 22-19 overall and faces the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth, the sixth-seeded, on Saturday (May 6) at 10:00 a.m. for the right to
advance to the championship round against Rhode Island College. The winner of
the 10:00 a.m. game will need to defeat Rhode Island College twice in the
afternoon to take the title.
UMass Dartmouth eliminated Keene State College, the defending LEC champion,
by defeating the Owls 3-1. Rhode Island College improves to 32-8-1 and will
await the winner needing only one win to clinch its first LEC softball title.
Locked in a pitchers' duel in the opening game, Hudspeth provided the
Huskies with the extra-innings win driving in her eighth RBI of the season.
Senior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis) opened the Huskies'
eighth inning drawing a walk to put the game-winning run on base. Riitano
advanced to second on a infield single from freshman OF Katie Martell
(Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington). Senior P Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills,
Maine/Erskine Academy) moved both runners up with a grounder to third base,
before Hudsepth drove in Riitano for the winning run.
Mainville (10-7) threw her second straight complete game shutout in the
tournament. Mainville allowed eight hits, struck out ten and yielded a walk to
earn her 10th win of the season. Keene State sophomore starting pitcher Ashlee
Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock) threw five scoreless innings, allowing three
hits with five strikeouts and three walks, before being lifted for junior
pitcher Erin Fuoroli ( Warwick, Rhode Island/Pilgrim). Fuoroli was tagged with
the loss. She allowed two hits in 2.1 innings to drop to 9-5.
In the second game, Rhode Island College scored four unearned runs to take
the 5-2 win as Southern Maine struggled defensively committing six errors.
Rhode Island College plated two runs in the third inning on three hits,
including an RBI single to left field from sophomore 1B Christie Lotti
(Waterford, Conn./Waterford), and a USM error. The Anchorwomen struck for two
more runs in the fourth inning parlaying a single from freshman DH Justine
Burgess (Uxbridge, Mass./Uxbridge) and three Southern Maine defensive miscues.
Rhode Island College increased its advantage to 5-0 in the fifth inning on
back-to-back singles from senior OF Kate Benevides (North Dighton,
Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth) and Lotti and another pair of errors from the Huskies.
Southern Maine cut into the Rhode Island College lead by plating two runs
in the top of the sixth. Sophomore OF Whitney Westman (Cape Neddick,
Maine/York) led off the inning with a double and came around to score on an RBI
grounder by sophomore 3B Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester). Ross, who
reached safely on a Rhode Island College error, scored the Huskies second run of
the inning on an RBI single from Riitano.
Southern Maine, however, was unable to get any closer as junior pitcher
Nicole Riley (North Providence, Rhode Island/North Providence) retired the side
in order in the top of the seventh.
Riley (23-2) picked up her 23rd win of the season scattering six hits over
seven innings. Riley allowed just one earned run while fanning eight batters
without a walk. Southern Maine freshman Bree Loon (10-7) (Jay, Maine/Jay) took
the loss for the Huskies despite allowing just one earned run in six innings of
solid work. Loon, who struck out eight batters, allowed seven hits and did not
give up a walk.

Mainville Strikes Out 16 As Southern Maine Upends Eastern Connecticut 2-0
PROVIDENCE -- Senior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine
Academy) turned in a dominating performance to lead the fifth-seeded University
of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 win over the second-seeded Eastern
Connecticut State University Warriors in a first round game of the 2006 Little
East Conference Softball Tournament Thursday at Dayna A. Bazar Field on the
campus of Rhode Island College.
Mainville tied her own school record fanning 16 batters in seven innings to
lift the Huskies to the win. Mainville, who had established the USM school
record for strikeouts in a game with 16 in a 1-0 loss to Eastern Connecticut
earlier in the season, fanned the first nine batters she faced en route to tying
the record.
Southern Maine, 21-18, advances in the six-team, double-elimination
tournament. The Huskies will play the third-seeded Keene State College Owls on
Friday (May 5) at 12 p.m. Eastern Connecticut falls to 21-18 with the loss and
will face the sixth-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs. The
non-advancing team from that game will be eliminated from the tournament.
In control from the start, Mainville did not allow the Warriors to put the
ball in play until the bottom of the fourth inning, recording a fly out and a
pop out, and did not give up a hit until the fifth inning when Eastern
Connecticut senior 2B Brooke Nici (Clinton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) reached
safely on an infield single to break up the no-hitter. Nici was no threat on
the base path, however, as Mainville recorded her 12th strikeout of the game to
retire the side.
Mainville continued to dominate from the mound in the final two innings.
She retired the Eastern Connecticut side in order in the sixth inning, and
struck out the side in the seventh to end the game.
Southern Maine scored all the runs it would need in the second inning on
two hits, including an RBI single from senior OF Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells,
Maine/Wells). The Huskies also took advantage of two Eastern Connecticut errors
in the inning.
USM senior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Comm.)
reached on a one-out single. After a pop out, Riitano advanced to third when
sophomore 2B Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) reached safely on an
error. Southern Maine used the error to its advantage when Stivaletta connected
on her run-scoring single to plate Riitano. Another error on the play allowed
Hudspeth to cross the plate for a 2-0 lead.
Mainville (9-7) finished the game striking out 16 of the 23 batters she
face, while giving up just two hits without allowing a walk. Eastern
Connecticut senior Lindsay Savelle (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire) took the loss
despite a solid performance, allowing five hits while striking out six. Both
runs against Savelle were unearned.

Southern Maine Splits Doubleheader at Bates to Close Regular Season
LEWISTON, Maine - Senior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscat-
aquis) and junior SS Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) combined
for seven hits and seven RBI to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to
a 13-6 win over the Bates College Bobcats in the second game of a non-conference
softball doubleheader Monday afternoon in Lewiston. Bates won the opener 9-3.
With the split, Southern Maine concludes the regular season with a 20-18
overall record. Bates end its regular season at .500 with a 16-16 mark.
In the second game, the Huskies exploded offensively, pounding out a
season-high 18 hits. Riitano led the assault going 3-for-3 at the plate. She
cranked out home runs in the third and fifth innings after driving a double to
the left-center field gap in the first inning. For the game, Riitano drove in
four runs. Lachapelle drove in three runs on a 4-for-5 effort, including two
doubles and a home run.
Trailing 6-5 after four innings, the Huskies plate three runs in the top of
the fifth to take control of the game. Riitano led off the inning with a solo
homer to center field to draw the USM even. Freshman DH Katie Martell

Western Connecticut Edges Southern Maine Twice
DANBURY, Conn. -- Junior 1B Meg Cirigliano (Newington, Conn.) pounded out
eight hits over two games and knocked in the game-winning run in the first game
to lead the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to a pair of wins
over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Sunday in a Little East Conference
doubleheader in Danbury, Conn. The Colonials defeated the Huskies 2-1 in nine
innings in the opener, then completed the sweep with a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
With the two victories, Western Connecticut improves to 26-14 overall and
9-5 in the Little East. The losses drop Southern Maine to 19-17 overall and 8-6
in the LEC.
Cirigliano capped a perfect day at the plate, going 5-for-5 with five
singles, by driving in the game-winning run on a shot to left-center field in
the bottom of the ninth inning. Cirigliano scored junior OF Julia Wullen
(Bergenfield, N.J.) who had reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved
to second on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore OF Megan Brunell (Southbury,
Conn./Pomperaug).
The Huskies led 1-0 after the first inning. Freshman DH Sabrina Mills
(Westford, Mass.) led off the inning with her fifth double of the season and
later came around to score an unearned run. Mills moved to third on a single by
junior SS Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale). Mills crossed the
plate on an infield error on a grounder from senior 1B Caterina Riitano
(Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis).
Western Connecticut tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI
single to center field from sophomore C Brittany Finkeldey (Ivorytown,
Conn./Williams School) to force extra innings.
Colonial sophomore Shelby Slie (14-5) (Seymour, Conn.) earned the win,
pitching all nine innings. She yielded five hits and three walks while striking
out 12. USM senior Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy) took
the loss, giving up one earned run on 11 hits with seven strikeouts.
Western Connecticut rallied from a two-run first inning deficit in the
second game to best the Huskies 3-2, coming away with the victory on a game-
winning single from sophomore 3B Stacy DiMaggio (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John
Jay) in the bottom of the seventh.
Southern Maine jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on four hits,
including an RBI single from freshman 3B Katie Martell (Wilmington, Mass.) and
an RBI double from Riitano.
Western Connecticut evened the score in the third inning as the Huskies
allowed two unearned runs in the inning, committing three errors. Cirigliano
doubled to left-center field to lead off the inning, moved to third on a
misplayed bunt, and scored on a sacrifice fly from Finkeldey to cut the USM lead
to 2-1. The Colonials tied the game on an RBI single from senior SS Mallory
Zenkus (Seymour, Conn.) to score sophomore 2B Kristen Lugovich (West Haven,
Conn.) who reached on an error.
Sophomore pitcher Cortney Romyns (Newton, N.J./Blair Academy) earned the
victory after coming on in relief of Western Connecticut starting pitcher
Christina Scordato (Hillsdale, N.J./Pascak Valley). Romyns (8-3), who retired
eight consecutive batters after giving up an infield single in the top of the
fifth, gave up just two hits while striking out two in five innings of work.

Southern Maine Sweeps Keene State College 4-3 and 4-2
KEENE, N.H. -- Senior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills,
Maine/Erskine Academy) and freshman pitcher Bree Loon (Jay, Maine/Jay) each
turned in solid performances on the mound to lead the University of Southern
Maine Huskies to a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep of the Keene State
College Owls Saturday in Keene. The Huskies earned both wins in the seventh
inning, defeating the Owls 4-3 in the opener and 4-2 in the nightcap.
The sweep marks the first time that Southern Maine has swept the Owls on

The Huskies improved their record to 19-15 overall and 8-4 in the Little East.
The double dip dropped Keene State to 24-12 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
In the first game with the game knotted up at 3-3, Southern Maine plated
the winning run in the top of the seventh on a RBI single from junior SS
Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale). Lachapelle's single scored

on 10 hits.
In the second game, the Huskies led 2-0 until the bottom of the sixth when
the Owls parlayed RBI singles from senior Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass./Auburn)
and sophomore Kaity Conklin (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem) to pull even.
Southern Maine responded scoring two runs in the top of the seventh on a
sacrifice fly to shallow right field from Mills and an RBI squeeze bunt from
Ross that scored junior OF Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) from
third.
KSC junior pitcher Kari Gardner (4-2) (Grafton, Mass./Grafton) was credited
with the loss for the Owls giving up three runs on two hits after entering the
game in relief of Owls starter Erin Fuoroli (Warwick, Rhode Island/Pilgrim) in
the fourth inning. Loon (10-5) earned her 10th win of the season for the
Huskies pitching seven complete innings. Loon finished the game giving up six
hits and two runs, while striking out nine.

Southern Maine Splits With Bridgewater State
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman DH Katie Martell (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington)
went three-for-three with a double, two singles and three RBI and freshman
southpaw Bree Loon (Jay, Maine) picked up her ninth win of the season to lead
the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 7-3 win over the Bridgewater State
College Bears in the second game to salvage a split of the non-conference
college softball doubleheader Thursday in Gorham.
Bridgewater State took the opening game 2-1 as senior pitcher Katie Tauber
(Carver, Mass./Carver) won a pitchers duel and sophomore DH Nicole Hebert
(Taunton, Mass./Taunton) provided the winning run with a home run in the sixth
inning.
With the split, USM moves to 17-15 overall. Bridgewater State, which had
its six-game winning streak snapped in the nightcap, is 20-18 overall.
Loon (9-5) struck out seven batters and did not yield a walk in the win,
but had to pitch her way out of two Bridgewater State scoring threats. In the
top of the fifth with runners on first and second following back-to-back singles
from Bears freshman SS Rachael Sprague (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and junior 1B
Mary Miller (Middleboro, Mass./Coyle Cassidy), Loon game back to get a
strikeout, a fielder’s choice ground out and another strikeout to retire the
side.
Loon pitched her way out of another jam in the sixth with runners on second
and third with help from junior OF Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region)
who made a big defensive play. Bears’ freshman 2B Kristen Jackman (Stoughton,
Mass./Cardinal Spellman) led off the inning with a single and then advanced to
third on a double to the right-center field gap by Hebert. Facing two runners
in scoring position with no outs, Loon got a pop-up for the first out of the
inning. The lefty then got a fly ball to right field and a pinpoint throw from
Martin to the plate to double up Jackman trying to score.
The Huskies took control of the game in the second inning, tagging
Bridgewater State starting pitcher sophomore Stephanie Pierce (Worcester,
Mass./Notre Dame Academy) for five hits and three runs. Martell singled in
senior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Academy) for the
Huskies first run of the game. Martin and freshman C Sabrina Mills (Westford,
Mass./Westford Academy) also knocked in runs for Southern Maine as Martin
collected a double and Mills a single.
Bridgewater State took back a single run in the third inning on a RBI
double by Kayla Flynn (Concord, Mass./Concord-Carlisle), but Southern Maine came
right back with two more runs of its own in the bottom of the inning on an RBI
double from Martell and a run scoring single from senior 2B Katie Mainville
(Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy).
The Huskies added a single run in the bottom of the fifth and sixth
innings. Martell continued to swing the hot bat with an RBI single in the
fifth. Freshman Megan Stanley (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) drew a walk in the
sixth and later scored on a Bridgewater State error.
Bridgewater State scored two more runs in the top of the seventh, as Flynn
rocketed a two-out, two-run home run over the left-field fence for the 7-3
final.
In the first game, Tauber came out with the win in a low-scoring pitchers
duel. She gave up one run on eight hits and one walk while striking out four to
earn her 13th victory of the season. USM’s Mainville (7-5) fanned 10 batters in
the loss, giving up two runs on six hits and a walk.
The Bears struck for a run in the first inning on a single from freshman OF
Lindsey Estes (Beverly, Mass./Beverly), a well-executed sacrifice bunt from
Jackman and a RBI double from sophomore OF Katie Holbrook (Brockton,
Mass./Brockton).
Southern Maine tied the game in the second inning when sophomore 2B Evon
Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) drilled a double to center field to
score senior OF Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells, Maine/Wells) who had reached base
with a lead-off single.
Tied at 1-1 through five innings, Bridgewater State got the eventual
winning run in the sixth inning when Hebert lofted her home run over the left
field fence.
USM threatened in the bottom of the sixth inning on a double from Martell
and a sacrifice bunt from Mainville, but Tauber cleanly fielded a grounder to
get Martell at home, then ended the inning with a strikeout.
Southern Maine returns to action on the road Saturday (April 29) for a

Southern Maine Sweeps Plymouth State 1-0 and 8-5
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore 2B Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden
Academy) hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the seventh inning to deliver
the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 1-0 victory over the Plymouth State
University Panthers in the first game of a Little East Conference doubleheader
Tuesday afternoon in Gorham. The Huskies won the second game 8-5 on a solid
pitching effort from freshman Bree Loon (Jay, Maine/Jay).
With the victories, the Huskies halt a two-game losing streak and improve
to 16-14 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Plymouth State, suffering four
consecutive losses, drops to 4-23 overall and
1-9 in the conference.
In the first game senior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills,
Maine/Erskine Academy) scattered two hits and had eight strikeouts over seven
innings to earn her fifth shutout of the season. Mainville retired the first
six batters she faced before giving up a walk in the top of the third. After
giving up the walk, Mainville retired the next nine Plymouth State batters
before yielding a bunt single in the top of the sixth to break up her no-hit
bid.
Mainville came back after the bunt single to record the next three outs on
a pop-up, a foul out and her seventh strikeout of the game. As good as
Mainville was in the first six innings, she managed to pitch her way out of a
jam in the top of the seventh. After a lead off double from Plymouth State
sophomore C Devin Caswell (Wilton, N.H./Wilton-Lyndeborough), Mainville forced a
foul out and a ground out to second base that advanced Caswell to third. PSU
freshman OF Kristen Abbott (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) drew her second walk
of the game to give the Panthers a first and third situation with two outs.
However, Mainville was able to escape the inning unscathed recording her eighth
strikeout of the game.
In the bottom half of the seventh, with two outs and freshman OF Megan
Stanley (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) on first, Hudspeth drove in the game-
winning run with her fourth double of the season.
In the second game, USM jumped on Plymouth State starting pitcher Lisa
Illinger (Hanover, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) for five hits and four runs
before Illinger was lifted for senior Rose Easton (Concord, N.H./Concord). The
Huskies finished the first inning with five runs on six hits and two PSU errors
to take an early 5-0 lead.
The Huskies added runs in the second, third and fourth innings to lead 8-0
through four innings before the Panthers took back two runs in the top of the
fifth and scored three more in the top of the seventh for the 8-5 final.
In the fifth inning, freshman 3B Rachel Pothier (Reading, Mass./Reading
Memorial) and Caswell each hit RBI singles for the Panthers. Caswell had an RBI
single in the Panthers' three-run seventh inning. The other runs scored on a
wild pitch and a passed ball.
Sophomore 3B Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) connected on three
hits in three attempts for the Huskies in the second game. Junior SS Christen
Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) and Mainville each were two-for-three
with an RBI in the game.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (April 27) in its final home
games of the season hosting the Bridgewater State College Bears in a non-
conference doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for 3:30 p.m. Plymouth

Eastern Connecticut Sweeps Southern Maine 4-1 and 2-1
GORHAM, Maine - Senior pitcher Lindsay Savelle (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire)
earned a win and a save to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University
Warriors to a sweep of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East
Conference softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Gorham. Savelle hurled
a complete game for a 4-1 win in the first game, then protected a one-run lead
in the second game to preserve a 2-1 win.
With the two wins, Eastern Connecticut improves to 15-15 overall and 6-2 in
the Little East. The Huskies drop to .500 at 14-14 overall and 4-4 in
conference action with the two losses.
Savelle (9-7) scattered six hits over seven innings in the first game,
giving up just one run in the bottom of the first, and had five strikeouts to
earn her ninth win of the season.
USM senior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy)
took the loss for the Huskies despite setting a school record for strikeouts in
a game, fanning 16 Eastern Connecticut batters. Mainville gave up six hits, a
walk and yielded one earned run in the loss. Mainville tied the USM previous
record for strikeouts in a game (15) earlier in the season.
Savelle helped herself offensively with an RBI single as part of the
Warriors' decisive three-run fourth inning. With the score tied at 1-1, Eastern
Connecticut took control of the game, plating three runs on two hits, a hit
batter and an error.
Junior 2B Nikki Vachon (East Haddam, Conn./Nathan Hale-Ray) reached safely
to lead off the inning following a USM error in the outfield. Freshman DH
Monica Rochon (Bloomfield, Conn./Bloomfield) joined Vachon on the bases after
she was hit by a pitch. Both runners advanced a base on a passed ball before
Mainville struck out sophomore OF Ashley Marchitto (Canton, Conn./Canton) for
the first out of the inning.
Savelle would give the Warriors the lead when she dropped in a single to
center field to score Vachon and put Eastern Connecticut ahead 2-1. Eastern
Connecticut went ahead 3-1 on a two-out RBI single from junior 3B Karen Taber
(Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional) and scored its final run of the inning as
sophomore pinch runner Kate Livingston (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) stole home
as part of a double steal attempt by the Warriors.
In the second game, Eastern Connecticut used 4.1 solid innings of work from
senior Brooke Nici (Clinton, Mass./Nashoba Regional) and 2.2 innings of score-
less relief from Savelle to earn the 2-1 win. Nici (4-5), who struck out five
USM batters, gave up one run on four hits and a walk to earn the win. Savelle
earned the save giving up two hits with a strikeout.
Southern Maine freshman pitcher Bree Loon (Jay, Maine/Jay) had five
strikeouts and gave up one earned run on five hits and a walk.
Eastern Connecticut scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning
after Taber reached on an USM error in the outfield and advanced to third on the
play, before coming around to score on a bunt single by junior OF Leigha Abair
(East Hartford, Conn./East Hartford). The Warriors scored their eventual game-
winning run in the top of the fourth. Vachon singled, stole second and came
home on an RBI single by Marchitto.
Southern Maine took back a run in the bottom of the inning on back-to-back
doubles from senior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscatquis Comm.)
and freshman DH Katie Martell (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington), but it wasn't
enough as Savelle kept the USM bats quiet the rest of the way for the save.
Southern Maine returns to action at home on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) against
Little East Conference opponent Plymouth State University. The Warriors return
to action on the same date when they host UMass Dartmouth for a 5:00 p.m. LEC

Ahead 4-0 after three innings, the Huskies plated four runs on five hits,
four for extra bases, in the bottom of the fourth to invoke the eight-run rule.
After a ground out to start the inning, Lachapelle tripled to the right-center
field and scored on an RBI single from Martell. Martell then came around to
score on a double by senior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis
Comm.) to put USM ahead 6-0. The Huskies scored their final two runs on back-
to-back, two-out RBI doubles from sophomore 2B Evon Hudspeth (Hampden,
Maine/Hampden Academy) and Mainville.
USM relied on Mainville in the top of the fifth for the win, as she struck
out the side. She did yield a one-out single to freshman DH Nicole Johnson
(Leicester, Mass./Leicester), but stranded her at first.
Mainville, who improved to 6-4 with the win, picked up her fourth shutout
of the season. She gave up just two singles without a walk in five innings of
work. Beacon freshman pitcher Jenn Santoro (Randolph, Mass./North Quincy) took
the loss allowing 12 hits, six earned runs and one walk in four innings.
In the second game, USM raced out to a 6-0 lead after the two innings
highlighted by a five-run second inning. In the second, senior OF Caitlin
Stivaletta (Wells, Maine/Wells) lead off with a single. Junior C Danica Martin
(Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) followed by launching a line-drive home run over
the left field fence to put USM ahead 3-0. The Huskies went ahead 6-0 following
a two-run double from freshman OF Megan Stanley (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle)
and an RBI single from freshman OF Meghan Ford (Mechanic Falls, Maine/Poland
Regional).
UMass Boston came back with three runs in the top of the fourth, collecting
all five of its hits in the inning, including an RBI double from freshman OF Jen
Widener (Hyde Park, Mass./Fontbonne Academy) and RBI singles from junior 3B
Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) and senior C Catie O'Reilly
(Dorchester, Mass./Fontbonne Academy).
However, Southern Maine came right back with three runs of its own in the
bottom of the inning, paced by a two-run single from freshman OF Megan Irving
(Cumberland, Maine/Hebron Academy). USM added two more in the bottom of the
fifth for the eight-run differential and the win.
Loon earned the victory giving up three runs on five hits while recording
six strikeouts. She did not surrender a walk. Johnson allowed 12 hits, three
walks and seven earned runs in the loss.

Roger Williams Downs Southern Maine 7-4 and 8-3
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore SS Callie Nealon (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton),
junior 3B Gina Mariano (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) and sophomore OF
LeEllen Lewis (Brunswick, Md./Brunswick) combined for 10 hits as the Roger
Williams University Hawks swept a non-conference college softball doubleheader
by scores of 7-4 and 8-3 against the University of Southern Maine Huskies Friday
afternoon in Gorham.
With the pair of wins, the Hawks snapped a three-game losing streak and
improved to 14-15-1 overall. The losses halted the Huskies three-game winning
streak and evened their overall record at 11-11.
The Hawks banged out 12 hits in the first game and got a solid pitching
effort from junior Laura McAbee (Fairfield, Ohio/Fairfield) to earn the win.
McAbee (8-6), who allowed three earned runs, scattered eight hits and one walk
over seven innings of work for her eighth win of the season. Lewis collected
all three of her hits in the first game on a pair of singles and a triple,
notching RBI in the fourth and seventh innings.
Southern Maine freshman Bree Loon (Jay, Maine/Jay) took the loss for USM.
She gave up seven runs on 12 hits and walk. Loon (6-3), who had four
strikeouts, allowed only four earned runs and was hampered by five USM errors.
Sophomore 3B Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) hit her first triple of
the season in the fourth inning to drive in two runs.
In the second game, the Hawks scored four runs on three hits in the top of
the fourth to overcome a 2-0 deficit to seize control the game. Sophomore
pitcher Andrea Gregory (Toms River, N.J.) earned the win while sophomore pitcher
Kristin Foss (Concord, N.H./Concord) picked up the save in a solid relief
outing. USM senior Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Community)
was charged with the loss. Riitano gave up four runs, all earned, on two hits
and four walks in 3.1 inning of work.
USM scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take the initial lead on
an RBI single by freshman C Sabrina Mills (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) and
a bases loaded walk to freshman OF Megan Stanley (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle).
The Hawks started their rally when Gregory led off the fourth inning with a
triple and later scored on an RBI single from Nealon. The Hawks then took
advantage of three walks, five wild pitches and a fielding error to go ahead 4-
2.
Southern Maine took back one run in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out
RBI double by Riitano to cut the lead to 4-3 with a runner in scoring position.
Foss, who entered the game after the Riitano double, ended the inning for the
Hawks getting a lineout to end the threat.
Roger Williams put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth plating
four more runs on five hits and two USM errors. Foss helped out her own cause
smashing a two-run double as part of the Hawks’ four-run inning.
Southern Maine returns to action on the road at the University of

Southern Maine Sweeps Salem State 8-1, 8-5
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine
Academy) tied the school record for strikeouts in a game with 15 in the opening
game and senior Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells, Maine/Wells) earned the win in the
second game with five solid innings in relief as the University of Southern
Maine Huskies swept the Salem State College Vikings by scores of 8-1 and 8-5
Thursday afternoon in a non-conference college softball doubleheader in Gorham.
With the doubleheader sweep, the Huskies improve to 11-9 overall. The
Vikings fall to 4-19 with the pair of losses.
Mainville, who earned her fourth win of the season, struck out the first
seven hitters she faced en route to tying the record. Melissa Henderson set the
record last season with 15 strikeouts against D’Youville. Mainville gave up
just four hits and yielded walks over seven innings of work.
With Mainville quieting the Vikings’ offense, Southern Maine scored three
runs in the bottom of the second inning to take control of game. Junior C
Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) knocked a RBI double to right-center
field to score sophomore 2B Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) for
the first run of the game. Sophomore 3B Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New
Gloucester) followed with an RBI single to score Martin. Ross then came around
to score on a single from junior SS Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale,
Maine/Hall-Dale).
Salem State scored its lone run in the top of third as sophomore OF Sarah
Funk (Gloucester, Mass./Bishop Fenwick), who doubled, scored on an RBI single by
sophomore 3B Meghan Ward (Saugus, Mass./Saugus).
The Huskies countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the
inning on Hudspeth’s RBI single for a 4-1 lead. Southern Maine tacked on three
more runs in the bottom of the fifth and another in the bottom of the sixth for
the 8-1 final.
In the second game, Salem State jumped out to a 4-0 lead after two innings
as senior C Cindy Gill (Woburn, Mass./Woburn), freshman OF Meaghan Neenan
(Beverly, Mass./Beverly) and junior pitcher Samantha Clark (Maynard,
Mass./Maynard) each collected RBI hits off of Ross who was making her first
collegiate appearance on the mound.
However, the Vikings were limited to just two more hits in the game as
Stivaletta, who relieved Ross in the top of the third, pitched four innings of
scoreless ball before yielding a harmless run in the top of the seventh.
Behind Stivaletta’s performance, the bats came alive and the home side was
able to manage a comeback, rallying for three runs in the third and four more in
the fourth before tacking on their eighth run of the game in the bottom of the
fifth.
Riitano, Lachapelle and freshman OF Meghan Ford (Mechanic Falls,
Maine/Poland Regional) each collected RBI singles in the third inning as the
Huskies tagged Salem State’s Clark for four hits in the inning to trail 4-3.
The Huskies took the lead in the fourth inning rapping out five hits, including
an RBI single from freshman OF Megan Stanley (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) to
tie the game. USM took the lead for good two batters later on a two-run double
to deep center field by Riitano to score Lachapelle and Stanley.
Southern Maine returns to action at home Friday (April 14) in a non-

Southern Maine Splits Doubleheader with Bowdoin
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Freshmen pitcher Bree Loon (Jay, Maine/Jay) and DP Katie
Martell (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) propelled the University of Southern
Maine Huskies to a 6-1 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in the second
game of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon to salvage a split.
Loon (6-2) earned her sixth win of the season, scattering six hits and
fanning seven batters without giving up a walk, while Martell banged out three
hits, including two doubles, to lead the Huskies. With the split, Southern
Maine remains at .500 with a 9-9 record. The Polar Bears move to 10-14.
Southern Maine dropped the first game of the afternoon 2-1 despite a strong
performance from senior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine
Academy). Mainville gave up just two hits in the loss while fanning six
batters. She had a no-hitter heading into the bottom of the seventh with a 1-0
lead, but the Polar Bears were able to come away with the win by scoring two
runs in their final at bat. Mainville has previously recorded two no-hitters
this season.
Bowdoin's senior 2B Megan Rodgers (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) singled
to lead off the inning spoiling the no-hit bid, and moved to second on a pinch-
hit single by senior Katie Nielson (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights). Rodgers
scored the tying run after two consecutive fielder's choice plays, beating a
throw to the plate, before Neilson crossed the plate for the game-winning run on
a passed ball.
Southern Maine scored its lone run of the first game in the top of the
fifth on a RBI single from freshman OF Sabrina Mills (Westford, Mass./Westford
Academy).
In the second game, Southern Maine took control from the start scoring a
run in the first and second innings. The Huskies used a two-out single from
senior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Comm.) and the first
of two doubles from Martell to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. USM got
an RBI single from sophomore 3B Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) to
go up 2-0 in the second.
Bowdoin cut the USM lead to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the fourth on a
run-scoring single by senior OF Megan Wyman (Steep Falls, Maine/Bonny Eagle)
that scored Rodgers, who had led off the inning with a double.
Southern Maine countered, however, in its next at bat scoring three runs in
the top of the fifth to go ahead 5-1, and added another run in the top of the
sixth as Loon retired 10 of the last 11 batters she faced to earn the win.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (April 13) at 3:00 p.m. at

field.
In the second game, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third
inning on an RBI sacrifice fly to right field by Lachapelle. The Huskies tacked
on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth for the 3-0 final.

Late Runs Propel Babson to Doubleheader Sweep of Southern Maine
BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Senior catcher Erica Barry (Malden, Mass./Austin
Prep) knocked in the game-winning run with a two-out double to left field to
lead the Babson College Beavers to a sweep of the University of Southern Maine
Huskies in a non-conference softball doubleheader Sunday in Babson Park, Mass.
Barry drove in the lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning

pitchers limited their opponent's offensive chances, Babson came away with the
win in the second game thanks to Barry's heroics. With the tie-breaking rule in
effect, Babson freshman Kimberly D'Agostino (Woburn, Mass./Woburn) started the
inning at second base. After Southern Maine freshman pitcher Bree Loon (Jay,
Maine/Jay) forced Babson sophomore OF Jess Bryn into a pop-up, junior 3B Robyn
Woodruff (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) lined a single to right field. D'Agostino
advanced safely to third on the hit, but was thrown out trying for home on a
tremendous defensive play by USM senior Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells, Maine/Wells)
to give the Huskies two outs. However, Barry collected her second hit of the
game and her first double of the season to drive in Woodruff.
Babson junior pitcher Stacy Schlicht (Hillsborough, Calif./Notre Dame)
earned the win firing a complete game one-hitter. Schlicht (3-3) struck out 10
batters and did not give up a walk in the win. Loon (4-2) took the loss despite
giving up just one run on four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
In the first game, Babson senior pitcher Meghan Gaskell (Uxbridge,
Mass./Uxbridge) earned her seventh win of the season (7-1) to lead the Beavers
to a 1-0 win. Gaskell scattered five hits over seven innings to keep the
Huskies at bay. Senior pitcher Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis
Comm.) gave up just one hit in the loss, but walked eight batters en route to
her third loss of the season (0-3).
Babson plated the lone run of the game in the bottom of the fourth and then
relied on Gaskell's efforts to take the win. Woodruff was hit by a pitch
leading off the inning, then advanced to third on two consecutive groundouts.
After a walk by junior OF Andrea Cartullo (Holbrook, Mass./Cardinal Spellman),
Woodruff scored as Cartullo got caught in a rundown between first and second.
Gaskell picked up three of her five strikeouts over the final three innings
to preserve the win. Southern Maine threatened in the top of the seventh when
junior SS Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) hit a one-out
single to right field and advanced to second on a sacrifice by junior C Danica
Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region), but Gaskell ended the inning getting a fly
ball to center field from Riitano.
Southern Maine returns to action Tuesday (April 4) on the road at Endicott
College for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30
p.m. Babson plays at home on Friday (April 7) at 2:00 p.m. in a conference

center field by freshman Randi Arsenault (South Paris, Maine) to score junior
catcher Essie Widlanski (New York, N.Y.) who had reached earlier in the inning
with a single. The Mules plated what proved to be the game-winning run later in
the inning when sophomore DH Amanda Roehn (Tampa, Fla.) came around to score on
a RBI single to center field by sophomore 2B Mollie Puskar (Pittsburgh, Pa.).
