Jeffs Leads Plymouth State Over Southern Maine 1-0
Huskies Eliminated From LEC Tournament
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior pitcher Kim Jeffs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton)
fired a complete game, two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts to lead the sixth-seeded
Plymouth State University Panthers to a 1-0 victory over the fourth-seed
University of Southern Maine Huskies in an elimination game of the 2005 Little
East Conference Softball Tournament Friday in Providence.
With the win, the Panthers improve to 15-17 overall and will play fifth-
seeded Eastern Connecticut State University at 4:00 p.m. today. Eastern
Connecticut stayed alive earlier in the day defeating third seeded Western
Connecticut 3-0. With the loss, Southern Maine concludes its 2005 season with a
record of 23-19-1.
Jeffs came out on fire to start the game, retiring the first 11 Southern
Maine batters she faced - including a string of seven straight strikeouts - before
yielding a two-out bunt single to USM junior 3B Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale,
Maine/Hall-Dale) in the top of the fourth. With the win, Jeffs improves her
record to 9-11.
Southern Maine senior pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport,
Mass./Newburyport) was equally as impressive in the loss, recording 11 strikeouts
and two walks over six innings and giving up just one hit.
Unfortunately for Henderson, both walks and the hit came in the fifth inning
as the Panthers squeezed out a run to edge out the Huskies. PSU junior 1B Rose
Eaton (Concord, N.H./Concord) drew a one-out walk to start the rally. With two
outs, Eaton moved to second when freshman OF Lisa Pelosi (Reading, Mass./Reading
Memorial) drew a walk to give the Panthers runners on first and second with two
outs. Eaton was lifted for pinch-runner Shauna Isham (Auburn, N.H./Manchester
Memorial) who scored when junior SS Jess Fortin (Chester, N.H./Pinkerton Academy)
belted a single to left field to score the only run of the game.
Jeffs continued her stellar performance in the sixth and seventh innings,
notching three of her 13 strikeouts while retiring six straight batters for the
win.

Rhode Island Nips Southern Maine 2-1 in LEC Tournament
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Freshman DH Krystal Bilek (Fitchburg, Mass./Fitchburg)
cranked a one-out, run-scoring double to left field to lift the Rhode Island
College Anchorwomen to a 2-1 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies
Thursday in the third game of the Little East Conference Softball Championship
being hosted by Rhode Island College.
With the win, the top-seeded Anchorwomen improve to 24-13 and will play Keene
State College tomorrow (Friday, May 6) at 2:00 p.m. in the winners bracket The
Huskies fall to 23-18-1 with the loss and play tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against
sixth-seed Plymouth State University in an elimination game. Plymouth State fell
to Western Connecticut 2-1 in eight innings.
With the score knotted up at 1-1 through five innings, Bilek put the
Anchorwomen on top 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, belting Rhode Island College's
third double of the game off of USM junior starter Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills,
Maine/Erskine Academy). RIC junior SS Adora Burke (Naples, Maine/Gould Academy)
led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a ground out from senior
3B Amy Machado (Newport, R.I./Rogers) before Bilek tagged Mainville for the go-
ahead run.
Rhode Island College pitcher Heidi Eichler (Madison, Conn./Hand) threw a
solid game, scattering four hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts and no
walks. She finished the job for the Anchorwomen retiring three USM batters in the
seventh on a pop up and two strikeouts. With the win Eichler improves her season
mark to 12-7.
Southern Maine held a 1-0 lead after the top of the fifth when freshman 2B
Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) scored freshman OF Laura Pratt
(Greene, Maine/Leavitt Area) with a double. The Anchorwomen answered in the
bottom of the inning on a run-scoring double by freshman 1B Christie Lotti
(Waterford, Conn./Waterford).
Mainville took the loss for the Huskies, pitching 5.1 innings with five
strikeouts, surrendering seven hits and two earned runs. Senior Melissa Henderson
(Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport), who pitched the Huskies to a 1-0 win over
Eastern Connecticut in game one earlier in the day, came in on relief to finish
the sixth inning.

Henderson, Huskies Cut Down Eastern Connecticut 1-0
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport,
Mass./Newburyport) fanned 10 batters over seven innings and gave up just two hits
and a walk to lead the fourth-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0
triumph over the fifth-seeded Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors
Thursday in the first game of the Little East Conference Softball Tournament being
played at Rhode Island College in Providence.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 23-17-1 and will play top-seeded Rhode
Island College today at 2:00 p.m. With the loss, Eastern Connecticut falls to
12-25 and will play tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. in the double-elimination
format.
Henderson picked up her 17th win of the season, tying her own school record
for wins in a season set last spring. Henderson is currently 17-8 on the year.
After giving up a double in each of the first two innings, Henderson held the
Warriors hitless over the next five innings as the Huskies held on for the 1-0
win. USM plated the only run they would need in the bottom of the third.
After giving up a one-out double in the top of the second to Eastern
Connecticut sophomore 3B Samantha Morrow (Tolland, Conn./Tolland), Henderson
struck out the next two batters to start a string of 10 consecutive retired
hitters that carried through the fifth inning.
In the third inning, USM sophomore OF Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake
Region) drove in the Huskies lone run on an RBI fielder's choice. Freshman DH
Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden) started the inning with a single and junior
Kristin McGovern (Gorham, Maine/ Gorham) took her place on the bases as a pinch
runner. A sacrifice bunt from freshman SS Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New
Gloucester) moved McGovern to second and a short single to center field from
freshman OF Whitney Westman (Cape Neddick, Maine/York) put runners on first and
second for the Huskies as McGovern was held at second. McGovern used her speed to
steal third to set up Martin for the RBI.
Ahead 1-0, the Huskies rode Henderson to the win as she kept the Warrior bats
off-balance the rest of the way allowing just one base-runner - a fifth inning
walk to freshman 2B Courtney Watson (Bristol, Conn./Bristol Central) - while
totaling six of her ten strikeouts to close out the game.
Eastern Connecticut starter Lindsay Savelle (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire)
pitched well in the loss, giving up four hits over six innings with no walks and
four strikeouts.

Southern Maine Splits Doubleheader with Bates
GORHAM, Maine – Senior pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./
Newburyport) earned her 16th win of the season to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a split with the Bates College Bobcats in a non-
conference softball doubleheader Monday at Towers Field in Gorham. The Huskies
held off a surging Bobcat squad 5-4 in the opener before Bates rallied in the
nightcap for a 3-2 come-from-behind win.
With the split the Huskies are 22-17-1 heading into Little East Conference
tournament play. The Bobcats remain even at 10-10 this season.
Henderson, who was honored following her win as the team’s lone senior,
scattered six hits over seven inning while fanning eight batters to earn the win
and improve to 16-7 this season. Bobcat starter Kristin Masino (North
Arlington, N.J. /Montclair Kimberly Academy) took the loss to fall to 5-5,
giving up five runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk.
The Huskies jumped ahead of Bates 1-0 in the second inning on an RBI single
from freshman SS Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) and added another
run in bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch before plating three runs in the
fifth to grab a 5-0 lead. The Huskies three-run output in the fifth would prove
to be decisive, however, as the Bobcats rallied in the final two innings.
Southern Maine’s three-run outburst started with a single from junior 2B
Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy). Mainville quickly moved
to second an a sacrifice bunt from junior 3B Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale,
Maine/Hall-Dale), before the Bobcats committed one of their four errors for the
game to allow junior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis
Community) to reach first safely and allowing Mainville to move to third. In
the next at-bat USM freshman OF Laura Pratt (Greene, Maine/Leavitt Area) reach
first on a fielder’s choice. With one-out and the bases loaded, junior C Kim
Lipman (Augusta, Maine/Cony) cranked out her second double of the game to clear
bases and put the Huskies ahead 5-0.
Bates cut the lead to two with a three-run inning of its own on RBI singles
from Kyla Decato (Paris, Main/Oxford Hills), Alex Bethel, (Aspen, Colo./Aspen)
and an RBI fielder’s choice Beth Lakin (Tacoma, Wash./Bellarmine Prep.).
In the top of the seventh Bates cut the lead to one run when Katie Franklin
(New Preston, Conn./The Taft School) connected on a two-out single and then came
around to score on an RBI double from Decato, before Henderson got Caitlin
Murphy (Westwood, Mass./Ursuline Academy) to pop out to second base for the
final out and the win.
In the second game, Bates rallied to overcome a 2-0 deficit with a run in
the sixth and two runs in the top of the seventh to take the nightcap, 3-2.
Trailing 2-1 heading into the top of the seventh the Bobcats parlayed a walk to
senior Erin Foye (New London, Conn./New London), a single from Franklin, a hit
batter and a walk to Murphy to knot the score at 2-2. Masino then knocked in
Franklin with single for the game-winner before Southern Maine ended the rally
with a throw to home to catch Decato trying for an insurance run.
The Huskies had a runner on with one out in the bottom of the seventh after
a single from junior OF Kristin McGovern (Gorham, Maine/Gorham), but Bates
squelched the Huskies attempt turning a double play on a ground ball.
Southern Maine returns to action Thursday, May 5 in the first round of the
LEC tournament. Seedings and pairings have yet to be determined. Bates returns
to action Friday, May 6, in the NESCAC tournament.

Mainville Throws a No-Hitter as Huskies Sweep Eastern Connecticut
WILLAMANTIC, Conn. - Junior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills,
Maine/Erskine Academy) fired her second career no-hitter to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 win against the Eastern Connecticut State
University Warriors in the second game of a Little East Conference doubleheader
Sunday in Willamantic, Conn. Southern Maine earned the sweep over the Warriors
winning the first game of the doubleheader with a 4-1 decision earlier in the day.
With the pair of conference wins the Huskies improve their LEC record to 7-7
and are now 21-16-1 overall, marking their ninth consecutive season with at least
20 wins under head coach Bonny Brown-Denico. Eastern Connecticut stands at 12-22
overall and falls to 7-5 in conference action. The pair of wins also assures the
Huskies a spot in the six-team double-elimination conference tournament that
starts this Thursday and runs through Saturday (May 5-7).
Mainville pitched a magnificent game en route to her second career no-hitter,
fanning 13 batters while allowing just one base-runner on a hit-batsman in the
bottom of the second. Mainville, who allowed just two balls out of the infield,
threw her first collegiate no-hitter on April 15, 2004, in a 2-0 win over Salem
State.
Behind Mainville's stellar performance on the mound the Huskies received all
the run support they would need in the top of the fourth when junior 1B Caterina
Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Comm.) blasted her fourth home-run of the
season to spot her team a 1-0 lead.
The Huskies would add an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single by
junior 3B Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale). Junior OF Caitlin
Stivaletta (Wells, Maine/Wells) led off the inning with a single for the Huskies
and then nabbed her fifth stolen base of the season to move to second. Mainville
then laid down a sacrifice bunt to put Stivaletta on third to set up Lachapelle
for the RBI.
In the first game of the doubleheader, senior pitcher Melissa Henderson
(Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) rang up her 15th win of the season, scattering
three hits over seven innings with nine strikeouts as the Huskies downed Eastern
Connecticut 4-1.
Henderson, who did not walk a batter, held the Warriors scoreless until the
bottom of the sixth when she yielded a two-out, run-scoring double to sophomore
Karen Taber (Deep River, Conn./Valley Regional), but the Huskies were already
safely ahead scoring one run in the second, third and fifth innings before sealing
the win with a run in the seventh for the 4-1 final.
The Huskies used a nine-hit attack to defeat the Warriors, led by two hits
apiece from Riitano and junior C Kim Lipman (Augusta, Maine/Cony). Riitano had
two runs batted in to lead Southern Maine, driving in Lachapelle in the top of the
third with a single and then blasted a long sacrifice fly to score sophomore OF
Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) in the fifth. Lachapelle, who
connected on a double in the third to put herself in scoring position, singled in
the Huskies final run for the win.
Southern Maine returns to action Monday, May 2 at 3:30 p.m. when the Huskies
host the Bates College Bobcats for a non-conference doubleheader. Eastern
Connecticut closes out its regular season with a conference doubleheader at Rhode
Island College. The date of the game has not yet been determined.

Keene State Sweeps Southern Maine
GORHAM, Maine - Senior pitcher Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro,
Vt./Brattleboro) fired a three-hitter over nine innings and freshman pitcher
Ashlee Nicholson (Swanzey, N.H./Monadnock) pitched a two-hit shutout to lead the
Keene State College Owls to a Little East Conference doubleheader sweep of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon in Gorham. Keene State
edged the Huskies 4-1 in the opener, and earned the sweep with an 11-0 win in the
nightcap.
With the twinbill sweep, Keene State improves to 10-4 in the Little East and
28-6 overall. The Huskies fall to 5-7 in conference play and 19-16-1 overall.
In the first game McLoughlin scattered three hits over nine innings with 13
strikeouts and just three walks to lead the Owls past the Huskies. Southern Maine
senior pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) took the loss
giving up four runs on 12 hits while fanning eight. Henderson gave up just one
run over eight innings before yielding three in the top of the ninth as the Keene
State bats came alive.
With the score tied 1-1 in the ninth, freshman designated hitter Liz Mroczka
(Rocky Hill, Conn./Rocky Hill) started the Owl rally with a lead-off single. She
took second on a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt from junior shortstop Mandy Foote
(Hudson, N.H./Alvirne). With Mroczka in scoring position, junior second baseman
Sarah Campbell (Auburn, Mass./Auburn) cranked out a double to plate the eventual
game-winning run. Keene State added two more runs in the inning when freshman
catcher Melissa Scata (Medway, Mass./Medway) scored Campbell on a RBI fielder's
choice. Freshman outfielder Kaity Conklin (Selkirk, N.Y./Bethlehem) drove in the
Owls' third run of the inning when she doubled in Nicholson for the 4-1 final.
In the second game, the Owls scored three runs in the opening inning and
plated seven in the fourth to earn an 11-0 shutout win. The game was called after
five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Nicholson earned the win for the Owls striking out six batters over five
innings to improve to 5-2 this season. The Owls jumped ahead 3-0 early in the
game as USM starting pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine
Academy) struggled early giving up five consecutive walks to start the game.
The Owls took a 4-0 lead in the third inning when Mroczka doubled in freshman
outfielder Julia May (Concord, N.H./Concord) for one of her two RBI for the game.
KSC plated seven more runs in the fourth inning to invoke the eight-run rule.
Scata connected for two of her three RBI in the fourth inning when she belted two-
run single to score Nicholson and senior third baseman Jenn Norman (Penacook,
N.H./Penacook).
Southern Maine returns to action tomorrow (Sunday, May 1) at 1:00 p.m. on the

Huskies Take Two from Bowdoin College
GORHAM, Maine - Senior Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.) earned her
14th win of the season in the first game and came in to save in the nightcap to
lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a non-conference doubleheader
sweep of the Bowdoin College Polar Bears, Friday at Towers Field in Gorham.
Southern Maine downed Bowdoin 2-1 in the opener and held on for the 3-2 win in
the second game.
With the twinbill sweep, the Huskies improve to 19-14-1 overall. Bowdoin
drops to 18-10 following the pair of losses.
In the first game, Henderson rang up 11 strikeouts, scattered six hits with
no walk over seven innings to earn the 2-1 win. Junior 1B Caterina Riitano
(Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis) carried the load offensively for the Huskies,
going 2-for-3 at the plate with a RBI and a run scored.
Riitano knocked in the Huskies first run in the bottom of the first on a
two-out single, plating sophomore OF Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region)
to put USM on top 1-0. Martin had reached on an error and moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt from junior 2B Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine
Academy). She took third on a groundout from sophomore 3B Christen Lachapelle
(Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) before heading home on Riitano's hit.
Bowdoin fought back to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when
junior SS Danielle Chagnon (Windsor Locks, Conn.) cracked a run-scoring double
to score senior OF Rachael Gordon (Wayland, Mass./Wayland). Gordon reached
first on a bunt single.
The Huskies took the lead right back in the bottom of the fourth, taking
advantage of one of the Polar Bears’ four errors, for the win. Riitano led off
the inning with her second hit, driving a shot down the left-field line, and
then took second on a single from junior C Kim Lipman (Augusta, Maine). Riitano
then moved to third when USM freshman OF Laura Pratt's (Greene, Maine/Leavitt
Area) bunt attempt was misplayed by the Polar Bears. In the ensuing at bat,
Bowdoin pitcher Caitlin Polistena (Mattituck, N.Y./Mattituck) threw a wild pitch
and Riitano raced home for the 2-1 Southern Maine lead.
Henderson pitched solidly in the final two innings to keep the Polar Bears
at bay. Bowdoin threatened in the top of the sixth when Chagnon roped a leadoff
triple, but the Polar Bears were unable to capitalize as Henderson fanned the
next two batters and forced a groundout to end the inning.
In the second game, Mainville pitched four scoreless innings and Riitano
earned the win in 2.2 innings of relief before Henderson came on for the save in
the top of the seventh as the Huskies held on for the 3-2 win. Riitano, who
entered the game in the top of the fifth with the score tied at 0-0, gave up two
runs (one earned), two hits and struck out two to improve to 3-5 on the season.
The Huskies scored all three of their runs late in the game as sophomore 3B
Melissa Brown (Belfast, Maine/Belfast), Mainville and Lachapelle each came
across home plate in the bottom of the fifth as Bowdoin committed its lone error
of the game.
After a failed bunt attempt from junior OF Kristin McGovern (Gorham, Maine),
Brown reached first on an infield error. Martin then laid down a sacrifice bunt
to put Brown on second and Mainville drew a walk before Lachapelle blasted a
two-out, run-scoring double to plate Brown. In the next at bat, Riitano singled
to score Mainville and took second on the throw before Lachapelle came home on a
wild pitch from Polar Bear starter Emily Nelson (Pasadena, Calif./Polytechnic).
Bowdoin got one run back in the sixth on an RBI single from junior C Katie
Nielson (Cleveland, Ohio/Shaker Heights), and another in the seventh on a wild
pitch by Riitano. Henderson took the mound for the final out, striking out
freshman pinch-hitter Sarah Stern (Newportcoast, Calif./Corona Del Mar) for the
save.

a double, and scored two runs to lead the Husky offense. Juniors Katie Mainville
(Cooper Mills, Maine), Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine) and Kristin McGovern
(Gorham, Maine) also added two hits apiece for the Huskies.
A single to center in the fifth inning by freshman Laura Pratt (Greene,
Maine) was the only hit in the nightcap allowed by Jeffs, who surrendered one hit
or less for the 17th time in her career (13 one-hitters, four no-hitters). She
also recorded her fourth shutout of the season and the 36th of her career, which
is tied for 11th on the all-time Division III list.

nightcap, going 2-for-3 with three RBI. She cracked a two-run single in the third
inning and added an RBI single in the fourth. Jeffs also added a run-scoring

Huskies Split with St. Joseph's
Henderson Breaks USM Strikeout Record
STANDISH, Maine -- Senior Melissa Henderson (Newburyport,
Mass./Newburyport) fanned 14 batters, establishing a new single-season record
for strikeouts, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a split with
the St. Joseph’s (ME) College Monks, in a non-conference doubleheader, Thursday
night in Standish.
The Huskies took the first game of the twinbill 9-1 before dropping a 3-2
eight-inning decision in the nightcap. With the split, Southern Maine moves to
16-13-1 while St. Joseph’s improves to 12-19.
In the first game, Henderson struck out 14 to earn her 12th win of the
season to lead the Huskies. After giving up a walk and a pop-up to start the
game, Henderson was spectacular striking out seven of the next eight St.
Joseph’s batters while holding the Monks hitless until the fifth inning.
Behind Henderson’s remarkable pitching effort, Southern Maine plated all of
the runs it would need in the top of the fifth when junior catcher Kim Lipman
(Augusta, Maine/Cony) launched a two-run home-run - her first of the season - in
a three-run inning for the Huskies. The Huskies’ first run of the inning came
when sophomore Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) poked a one-out
single, stole second and scored on a fielding error by St. Joseph’s.
The Monks would get one run back in the bottom of the inning when sophomore
right-fielder Sarah Martin (Athol, Mass./Athol) led off the inning with an
infield single and scored on double from sophomore first baseman Jamie Morrison
(Auburn, Maine/Edward Little). But it would be as close as the Monks would get
the rest of the way as Henderson continued her stellar work on the mound. After
giving up two hits in the fifth, Henderson came back to fan six of the next nine
batters she faced and the Huskies tacked on six more runs, with one in the sixth
and five in the seventh, to secure the win. Included in the Huskies’ five-run
outburst in the fifth was a three-run homer from junior co-captain Caterina
Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/ Piscataquis) for her third of the season.
In the second game the Huskies battled back from a 2-0 deficit with two
runs in the sixth as Martin reached with an infield single and came around to
score on triple from junior Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine
Academy). Mainville scored on the play when St. Joseph’s committed a throwing
error as she headed for third.
The Monks took the win in the eighth inning with the tie-breaker rule in
effect. St. Joseph’s Leanne Morton (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) started the inning on
second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch from USM relief pitcher
Riitano and crossed the plate on a fielding error for the victory.
St. Joseph’s jumped ahead of the Huskies 1-0 in the second inning on a solo
home run from Morrison, the first of her career, and took a 2-0 lead in the
third an a run scoring double from senior Darcy Lee (Windham, Maine/Windham).
St. Joseph’s starting pitcher Allyson Ferguson (Sabattus, Maine/Oak Hill)
earned her fifth win of the season to improve to 5-6, scattering five hits over
eight innings with one strike out and no base on balls. Riitano took the loss
for the Huskies and is now 2-6 this season.

Henderson Leads Southern Maine to Sweep of UMass Boston
BOSTON - Senior pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport)
picked up two wins while freshman shortstop Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New
Gloucester) pegged a double, triple and a home-run with four runs batted in to
lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a doubleheader sweep of the
University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons in Little East Conference action
Tuesday in Boston.
The Huskies defeated the Beacons 12-0 in the first game and came-back to
defeat UMass Boston 10-7 in eight innings in the night cap. With the sweep, the
Huskies improve to 15-11-1 overall and 4-4 in the LEC. The pair of losses drops
the Beacons record to 2-18 overall and 0-8 in conference action.
In the first game, Henderson fired her fourth one-hitter, and fifth shutout,
of the season to improve to 10-7, striking out four batters with no walks in the
five-ining game, Southern Maine jumped ahead 9-0 in the first inning.
With UMass Boston pitcher Katherine Wall (Arlington, Mass./Arlington)
struggling, the Huskies plated nine runs in the first on three hits, five walks
and two Beacon errors. The Huskies tagged on three more runs in the top of the
fourth when junior 1B Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis) launched a
three-run home run, her second of the season, to put Southern Maine ahead 12-0.
The game was called after five innings due to the eight run rule.
In the second game, the Huskies again relied on Henderson to pull out the win
as the Beacons forced USM into extra innings. The Huskies led 5-0 through the top
of the fifth thanks to Ross who knocked in three of her four RBI with her first
collegiate home run in the fourth and two-run double in the fifth. UMass Boston
battled back to tie the score at 7-7.
Trailing 7-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh, UMass Boston's Wall
singled in two runs for the Beacons and Andrea Ciarletta (Watertown,
Mass./Watertown) collected one of her two RBI with a run-scoring ground out to
force the extra inning.
Henderson, who entered the game with no outs in the seventh and inherited
runners on second and third, gave up the game-tying run on a fielder's choice, but
collected two strikeouts and a ground out to end the inning.
The Huskies fired back, however, tallying three runs in the top of the
eighth, including a run-scoring double to left-center from Riitano that plated the
eventual game-winner. Henderson struck out the side in the bottom of the eighth
for the win.
With the victory, Henderson is now 11-7 this season and has 147 strikeouts in
113 innings. Henderson and the Huskies return to action Thursday, April 21 at St.
Joseph's College (ME) for a doubleheader. The first game of the twin bill is

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Senior right-hander Melissa Henderson (Newburyport,
Mass./Newburyport) pitched a four-hit shutout in the first game of a Little East
Conference doubleheader to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 1-0
win over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen Sunday in Providence.
Henderson also started the second game for the Huskies, pitching a complete
game, but was the unfortunate recipient of a 1-0 loss as the Anchorwomen were able
to salvage a split. With the split, the Huskies stand at 13-12-1 overall and 2-4
in the Little East. Rhode Island College moves to 14-12 and 5-1 in conference
action.
Henderson earned her ninth win of the season in the opener, striking out 12
batters without giving up a walk through seven innings.
The Huskies scored the game's only run in the first inning and made it stand
up for the win. Sophomore Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) scored the
only run for Southern Maine on an RBI single by junior co-captain Caterina Riitano
(Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Community). Martin reached first with a single to
start the inning and moved into scoring position on a well-executed sacrifice bunt
from junior Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy). Riitano then
knocked a one-out single to centerfield for the score.
In the second game, both team's were held scoreless through the first seven
innings as pitchers from both sides were firing well from the mound. Rhode Island
College sophomore pitcher Nicole Riley (North Providence, R.I./North Providence)
earned the shutout giving up three hits and no walks with nine strikeouts in eight
innings of work to improve her record to 6-4 this season.
The Anchorwomen scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth after
freshman Christie Lotti (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) raced home on a passed ball
following her lead-off triple.
Henderson, who pitched 14.1 innings over two games, was tagged with the loss
and is now 9-7 for the Huskies. Henderson finished the second game with nine
strikeouts, allowing just five hits and one walk.

Southern Maine Splits LEC DoubleHeader with UMass Dartmouth
GORHAM, Maine - Senior Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport)
fired a one-hitter to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 win
over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in the first game of their
doubleheader Saturday at Towers Field in Gorham. In the second game, Southern
Maine dropped a 6-2 decision to the Corsairs for the split.
With the split the Huskies are now 12-11-1 overall and 1-3 in the Little
East, while the Corsairs move to 9-10 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
Henderson pitched a masterful game for the Huskies, firing a no-hitter into
the seventh inning before yielding a two-out single to Corsairs' catcher Shannon
Allberry (Attleboro, Mass.). Henderson recovered however to strike out her second
batter of the inning to earn the 2-0 win. Henderson finished the game with 12
strikeouts and just one walk to improve her record to 8-6.
The Huskies plated both of their runs in the fourth inning. Sophomore co-
captain Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) started the inning off
drawing a walk from UMass Dartmouth pitcher Meghan Fenton (Dartmouth, Mass.). She
moved to second after Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Community)
reached on an infield error. Junior catcher Kim Lipman (Augusta, Maine/Cony)
drove in the first run driving a double into the gap between left and center
fields to score Lachapelle. After Riitano was erased on a fielder's choice at
home, Lipman came in to score the Huskies final run of the game on an RBI single
from junior second baseman Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy).
Southern Maine held on for the win playing solid defense, including terrific
plays from Riitano and Lipman, as Henderson fanned five batters over the final
three innings.
In the second game, the Corsairs jumped out to a 6-0 led, scoring all of its
runs in the third and fourth innings, to earn the win. UMass Dartmouth scored its
first run in the third inning on a run-scoring groundout from senior Tracey Penney
(West Roxbury, Mass.), then plated five runs in the fourth.
Allison Letendre (Westport, Mass.) knocked a two-run double to start the
scoring for Corsairs in the fourth and later scored on an RBI single from Merideth
Morgan (Amherst, Mass.). Melissa Tavares' (Dartmouth, Mass.) two-out triple drove
in Morgan for the Corsairs fourth run of the inning. Tavares scored on a wild
pitch for a 6-0 UMass Dartmouth lead.
The Huskies got one run back in the bottom of the fourth when Riitano blasted
a one-run shot off of the scoreboard in centerfield for her first home run of the
season. The Huskies rallied for another run in the bottom of the seventh on a
run-scoring fielder's choice from freshman Whitney Westman (Cape Neddick,
Maine/York), but it wasn't enough as the Corsairs held onto the win.
The Corsairs' Amanda Leal (New Bedford, Mass.) picked up her fifth win of the
season while Riitano was tagged with the loss and is now 2-4.
Southern Maine returns to action tomorrow on the road against Little East
Conference rival Rhode Island College for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader. UMass
Dartmouth will play at Rhode Island College on Tuesday.

Southern Maine Posts Two Shutouts, Sweeps Salem State
SALEM, Mass. -- Senior Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport)
fired a one-hit shut out and junior Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/
Piscataquis Comm.) gave up just two hits as the University of Southern Maine
Huskies blanked the Salem State College Vikings 4-0 and 8-0 in a non-conference
softball doubleheader Thursday in Salem, Mass.
With the doubleheader sweep, Southern Maine improves its overall record to
11-10-1. Salem State slips to 11-8 with the pair of losses.
In the first game, Henderson earned her seventh win of the season fanning
nine batters and giving up just two walks and one hit in seven innings of work.
Salem’s lone hit of the game off of Henderson was a bunt single that the Huskies
conceded as they tried to let it roll into foul territory.
With the score knotted up at 0-0 through three innings, the Huskies gave
Henderson a two-run cushion in the top of the fourth. Riitano started the
inning for the Huskies with a single, then quickly came home with Southern
Maine’s first run of the day when junior catcher Kim Lipman (Augusta,
Maine/Cony) belted a triple. Lipman scored on one of Salem State’s two costly
errors after the Viking’s centerfield misplayed a fly ball from freshman Laura
Pratt (Greene, Maine/Leavitt Area).
The Huskies added one more run in both the sixth and the seventh innings to
seal the win. In the sixth, Riitano again led off with a single and then moved
to second on a ground out by Lipman before Pratt hit a double to put the Huskies
ahead 3-0. In the seventh, the Huskies added some insurance when sophomore
Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) scored on the second of Salem
State’s two errors. Martin had reached on one of her two singles for the game.
In the second game, Riitano pitched a steady game giving up singles in the
second and third inning while striking out four batters, including two in the
final inning, as the Huskies exploded offensively to take the 8-0 win in five
innings. The game was shortened due to the eight-run rule.
With the score at 0-0 through three innings the Huskies plated two runs in
the fourth, then added six runs in the fifth for the win. The Huskies had 15
hits in the second game, including four for extra bases.
Riitano, who had two hits in the first game, helped her own cause in the
nightcap, hitting a one-out triple in the top of the fourth to set up Lipman for
an RBI double. With Lipman on second, freshman Evon Hudspeth (Hampden,
Maine/Hampden Academy) drilled a two-out double putting the Huskies ahead 2-0
before she was thrown out trying to take third to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth the Huskies unloaded offensively. Sophomore third
baseman Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) hit a bases-loaded
single to put USM ahead 3-0 before Riitano drove in two more runs with a double.
Pratt then hit another double to score Riitano, and Hudspeth capped the rally
driving in the Huskies sixth run of the inning with a single to score Pratt.
In the bottom of the fifth, Riitano took care of business striking out the
first batter and then forcing the second to a pop out to Lachapelle before
taking down the Viking’s last batter with her fourth strikeout of the day for
her second win of the season.

Babson Blanks Huskies for Doubleheader Sweep
BABSON PARK, Mass. - Sophomore Stacy Schlicht (Hillsborough, Calif.)and
junior Meg Gaskell (Uxbridge, Mass.) posted back-to-back shutouts on the mound to
lead the Babson College Beavers, ranked fourth in New England, to a doubleheader
sweep of the University of Southern Maine Huskies in non-conferencesoftball action
on Wednesday afternoon. Schlicht stymied the Huskies(6-6) in game one, 1-0, while
Gaskell led the Beavers (17-2) to a 5-0 win in game two.
Schlicht (4-1) was overpowering in game one, giving up just three hits while
walking none and striking out eight in seven innings of work. She gave up back-to-
back singles with two away in the fourth before fanning junior Kim Lipman
(Augusta, Maine) for the final out of the inning. USM then loaded the bases with
two down in the sixth inning, but Schlicht induced an inning-ending groundout to
third to keep the shutout intact. It was her second shutout of the season and
third of her career.
Southern Maine senior Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.) fired an
outstanding game on the mound in game one, giving up one run on four hits while
striking out eight. Babson managed to score the only run of the game in the
fourth, when sophomore Andrea Cartullo (Holbrook, Mass.) drew a lead-off walk and
scored all the way from first on a sacrifice bunt and a throwing error. Cartullo
rounded second and headed for third on a
successful sacrifice by sophomore Darcy Lantz (Kingston, Pa.), and then came home
when second baseman Evon Hudspeth's (Hampden, Maine) throw trickled into left
field. The run turned out to be earned when sophomore Alex
Lazar (Milton, Mass.) and Gaskell followed with back-to-back singles.
Game two belonged to Gaskell (5-0), who fired a two-hitter for her second
shutout of the season and seventh of her career. The junior righthander also
provided the Beavers with some early offense, as she
drove in Lantz with the game's first run in the second. Babson would add two runs
on a walk, a single by first-year Alisha Blischok (Paradise Valley, Ariz.), an
error, and a wild pitch in the second, and then tack
on two more on back-to-back RBI-doubles by Gaskell and first-year Jess Cohen
(Pittsford, N.Y.) in the sixth. Lantz, Gaskell, Blischok, junior Erica Barry
(Malden, Mass.) and senior co-captain Kara Courtney (Northampton, Mass.) each
recorded two hits for the Beavers, who have now won five straight.
Henderson (4-4) took the loss in both games for USM, despite allowing just
two runs in 9 2/3 total innings. Southern Maine sophomore Christen LaChapelle
(Farmingdale, Maine) ended the day with two hits.

In the second game, Buffalo State scored the lone run of the game in the top
of the sixth inning on a two-out triple from Goldyn to earn the 1-0 win for the
split.

Huskies Sweep D'Youville
FORT MEYERS, Fla. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies rode two
stellar pitching performances from senior Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./
Newburyport) and junior Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy) and
cranked 25 hits over two games to sweep D'Youville College Monday in Fort Myers,
Fla. Southern Maine downed D'Youville 9-1 in its first game, then pounded out
eight runs in five innings to shut out D'Youville 8-0 in the second.
With their first doubleheader sweep of the season, the Huskies improve to 5-3
overall. D'Youville falls to 2-9.
In the first game, Henderson fanned a school record 15 batters to earn her
third win of the season. Henderson, who had tied the record of 14 strikeouts in a
win over Thomas College on Saturday, gave up just one hit and allowed no walks to
lead the Huskies.
The Huskies fared well at the plate, roping 13 hits off of D'Youville pitcher
Jen Toth. Five Southern Maine batters connected for two hits each, including
Christen Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale) who hit her team-leading third
double of the season to go along with a single.
Southern Maine, which scored eight runs in the first four innings, tallied
its second run and eventual game-winner in the top of the second when junior
Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells, Maine/Wells) scored on a passed ball after reaching
first on one of her two singles for the game. Stivaletta moved to second on a
single from sophomore Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) and then stole
third.
After Southern Maine plated three runs in both the third and fourth inning,
D'Youville was able to extend the game to a full seven innings when Hillary South
belted a home-run off of Henderson in the bottom of the fourth for her team's lone
hit of the game.
In the second game, the Huskies continued to punish the D'Youville pitching
staff, connecting for 12 hits and scoring eight runs in a game shortened to five
innings by the eight-run rule.
After two scoreless innings, the Huskies platted three runs in the bottom of
the third and added another four in the fourth before scoring its eighth run in
the fifth for the 8-0 final. Southern Maine's Lachapelle started the Huskies
offensive burst driving in Kristin McGovern (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) with an RBI
triple for the Huskies first run of the game. McGovern got herself into scoring
position reaching first on a drag bunt before stealing second to set up
Lachapelle.
Southern Maine's Mainville pitched a solid game with seven strikeouts and no
walks while limiting D'Youville to three hits for the shutout. Mainville is now
2-1 as a starter this season.
The Huskies return to action Tuesday morning with an 11 a.m. doubleheader
against Buffalo State. In their first meeting of the season, the Huskies fell to
the Bengals 2-1.

Southern Maine Splits Two Games in Florida
FORT MEYERS, Fla. - Senior pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./
Newburyport) earned her second win of the season pitching a one-hit shutout to
lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 3-0 win over the Thomas College
Terriers in the first of two games Saturday in Fort Meyers, Fla. In the Huskies
second game, the Buffalo State College Bengals used a two-run sixth inning to earn
a narrow 2-1 win over the Huskies.
With the split, the Huskies remain at .500 with a 3-3 record. Buffalo State
improves to 3-0 with the win while Thomas drops to 2-3.
In the win over Thomas, Henderson pitched a terrific game, striking out a
record tying 14 batters while giving up just one walk and allowing one hit.
Henderson started the game strong from the outset fanning her first eight batters.
Henderson held the Terriers hitless until the seventh inning when she surrendered
a single to freshman Kim Denbow (Readfield, Maine).
The Huskies led 1-0 in the first as the Terriers committed fielding errors on
consecutive ground balls following a lead-off double by sophomore Christen
Lachapelle (Farmingdale, Maine/Hall-Dale). Southern Maine padded its lead in
third scoring two more runs on an RBI double by junior Caterina Riitano
(Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Comm.) and an RBI single by sophomore Melissa
Brown (Belfast, Maine/Belfast).
In the second game of the day, Southern Maine battled Buffalo State to a
scoreless draw through the first five innings before the Bengals strung together a
four-hit, two-run inning in the bottom of the sixth to take a 2-0 lead.
The Bengals' Brooke Matheis (Hamburg, N.Y./Williamsville South) started the
inning with a lead-off double and advanced to third on of a bunt single from
sophomore Laurie Hutton (Tonawanda, N.Y./Kenmore West). Following another bunt
single by senior Alyssa Brosius (Tonawanda, N.Y./N. Tonawanda), the Bengals had
the based loaded with no outs.
Senior Nadine Sirianni (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) hit into fielder's
choice as Matheis was thrown out at the plate, but in the ensuing at-bat the
Huskies committed their lone error of the game to allow Hutton to score for a 1-0
Buffalo State lead. Sophomore Lauren Mruk (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) singled to
drive in the eventual game-winning run for the Bengals.
The Huskies managed to tally a run in the top of the seventh to cut into the
Bengals' lead but were unable to come up with the equalizer. Junior Katie
Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy) drew a one-out walk. Junior
Kristin McGovern (Gorham, Maine/Gorham) entered the game to pinch-run for
Mainville and moved to second after sophomore Danica Martin (Bridgton, Maine/Lake
Region) beat out an infield single. Lachapelle doubled to drive in McGovern with
the Huskies lone run before the Bengals nabbed the final two outs of the game.

Huskies Win One, Drop One In Florida
FORT MEYERS, Fla. -- Freshman Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden
Academy) drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh and senior
pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) fanned seven batters
and did not give up a walk to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a
2-1 win over the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks in the first of their
two games Friday in Fort Meyers, Florida.
The Huskies fell to the Lawrence University Vikings 4-0 in their second game
of the day. With the split the Huskies record remains even at 2-2. Wisconsin-
Whitewater dips below .500 to stand at 5-6 while Lawrence picked up its third win
of the season to improve to 3-7 overall.
Hudspeth was responsible for both of the Huskies runs in their win over
Wisconsin-Whitewater while Henderson gave up just one run and scattered three hits
over seven inning of solid work on the mound. After falling behind 1-0 in the
first inning, the Huskies platted the tying run in the bottom of the third.
Hudspeth reached first on the first of her two singles and took second base on a
passed ball. Freshman Laura Pratt (Greene, Maine/Leavitt Area) then connected on
one of her three hits in the game to set up a first and third situation. Hudspeth
raced home to knot the score following the Warhawks' second passed ball of the
inning.
Both teams were unable to score the go-ahead run over the fifth and sixth
innings and the Huskies were able to deny the Warhawks any runs in the top of the
seventh as Henderson continued to pitch an outstanding game.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Huskies were able to secure the win on
Hudspeth's game-winning single. Junior outfielder Kristin McGovern (Gorham,
Maine/Gorham) reached first on a bunt-single to lead off the inning and then moved
to second on a fielder's choice. Hudspeth then cranked out her second hit of the
game to right field to score McGovern. It was the second consecutive game that
the Huskies were able to win with a walk-off hit. Henderson improved her record to
1-1 on the season with the win.
In the Huskies' second contest of the day, Lawrence jumped out to 1-0 lead in
the first inning and held Southern Maine scoreless over the next seven innings to
earn its third win of the season. Despite being held to just three hits for the
game, Lawrence platted four runs as the Huskies committed two costly errors.
Lawrence's Becca Reason (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) paced the Vikings with
two doubles and two RBI's in the win.
Southern Maine's Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Comm.), who
made her first start of the season on the mound, was credited with the loss giving
up two runs, one earned, in two innings of action. Junior Katie Mainville
(Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine Academy), who entered the game in relief of Riitano,
pitched four solid innings for the Huskies with nine strikeouts.

Southern Maine Splits Its Season-Opening Games in Florida
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Junior Caitlin Stivaletta (Wells, Maine/Wells) smacked
a one-out single to right field in the eighth inning to drive in the game-
winning run as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Edgewood
College Eagles 4-3 in the second of their two games Thursday in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Huskies, who dropped their first game of the season 10-0 to the Union
College Dutchmen, improve to 1-1 with the win. With the loss Edgewood stands at
3-6 on the season. Union improved its record to 5-3 with its win over Southern
Maine.
With the tie-breaker rule in effect, Southern Maine freshman Laura Pratt
(Greene, Maine/Leavitt Area) started the inning on second-base for the Huskies.
Junior Kim Lipman (Augusta, Maine/Cony) drew a walk off of Edgewood's fourth
pitcher of the game, Amy Bahler (Monroe, Wisc./Monroe). Southern Maine freshman
Evon Hudspeth (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) attempted a bunt and reached
first base on Edgewood's second error of the game, but the speedy Pratt, who was
trying to score on the error, was thrown at home setting up a second and third
situation for the Huskies with one out. Stivaletta collected her first RBI of
the season with the walk-off single to deliver Lipman with the winning run.
Southern Maine junior pitcher Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine/Erskine
Academy) earned the win fanning five batters while scattering six hits over
eight innings of action. None of Edgewood's runs were earned, however, as the
Huskies committed four errors. Junior firstbaseman Caterina Riitano
(Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Comm.) was the lone repeat hitter for the
Huskies, driving in two runs on triple and a single.
In the first game of the day, Southern Maine committed five errors to trail
4-0 after four innings, all unearned runs, before giving up six runs in the
fifth inning to drop a 10-0 decision to Union. The game was ended after five-
innings due to the eight-run rule.
On top of their fielding woes, the Huskies were unable to get it started
from the plate managing just one hit off of Union junior pitcher Abby Arceneaux
(Mechanicville, N.Y./Mechanicville). Arceneaux fanned six while giving up just
one hit to Hudspeth, who recorded her first collegiate hit with a triple.
Pacing Union's ten-hit effort was junior outfielder Julie Gawronski
(Dunkirk, N.Y./Dunkirk). Gawronski had a double and a home-run for the Dutchmen
while driving in three runs.
Southern Maine senior pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass./
Newburyport) finished the game with five strikeouts while giving up 10 hits and
six earned runs.
