Heath, McLean Named to NFCA All-Region Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
softball team, senior 3B Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine) and senior SS Sarah McLean
(Portsmouth, R.I.), have been named to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III
New England All-Region third team. The all-region teams were selected by members
of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
This is the second straight year that Heath, an All-Northeast Region second
team pick last year, has been named to the All-Region team. McLean was named to
the third team for the third time in her career. She previously was picked to the
All-Northeast Region team in 2000 and 2002.
Players are selected to the All-Region first and second team by positions.
Third team selections are made on an at-large basis. Due to regional alignments,
USM (and the Little East Conference) was in the Northeast Region prior to this
year.
The Huskies' leading hitter this season, Heath batted .379 (50 for 132) with
17 runs scored, 13 doubles, two triples, one home run and 27 RBI. She led the
team in batting, hits, doubles, RBI and slugging percentage (.530). Heath was
named to the All-Little East Conference first team last week.
McLean finished the season second to Heath in hitting with a .350 average (41
for 117) with 27 runs scored, nine doubles, one triple, two home runs and 18 RBI.
She led the team in runs scored, walks (15) and on-base percentage (.426), and had
a stellar .959 fielding percentage.
Southern Maine finished the season 26-14 overall and 9-5 in the Little East
Conference (tied third place). The Huskies were eliminated in the first round of
the LEC tournament by eventual champion Keene State College. USM did receive a
postseason tournament berth, its sixth in the last seven years, when it was
selected to play in the ECAC Division III New England Championship.

Five USM Huskies Named to LEC Softball All-Star Teams
GORHAM, Maine -- Five members of the University of Southern Maine softball
team have been named to the Little East Conference first and second all-star teams
that were announced today by the conference office following a vote by the head
coaches.
Named to the first team were senior 3B Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine), junior
OF Darci Holland (Buckfield, Maine) and freshman DP Kristi Steward (Norridgewock,
Maine). Selected to the second team were freshman RHP Katie Mainville (Coopers
Mills, Maine) and senior SS Sarah McLean (Portsmouth, R.I.).
This is the second straight year that Heath and Holland have received first
team honors. McLean, a second team pick in 2000 and 2001, was named to the second
team at shortstop for the third time in her stellar four-year career.
"They're all very deserving of this honor," commented head coach Bonny Brown-
Denico. "Renee, Sarah Darci and Kristi formed the heart of our lineup this spring
while Katie gave us a great one-two punch on the mound with (sophomore RHP)
Melissa (Henderson)."
The team's leading hitter, Heath has a .392 average (47 for 120) with 16 runs
scored, 12 doubles, two triples, one home run and 27 RBI. She leads the team in
seven offensive categories.
"Renee was a very consistent hitter in the third spot in the lineup this
spring. Even when she made an out, she hit the ball hard right at someone (on the
defense)," said Brown-Denico.
Holland batted .300 (33 for 110) this season with 19 runs scored, 11 doubles,
one triple and 19 RBI.
"Darci had another fine season at the plate and in the field for us. She
continues to be one of our top clutch hitters with runners on base," Brown-Denico
added.
Steward had an impressive rookie season compiling a .350 batting average (35
for 100) with 18 runs scored, six doubles, one triple and 11 RBI.
"Kristi was a pleasant surprise for us this spring. We knew she could hit,
but she exceeded our expectations to earn a regular spot in the lineup," said
Brown-Denico.
A four-year starter at shortstop for the Huskies, McLean has a .346 average
(37 for 107) with a team-leading 27 runs scored, seven doubles, one triple, two
home runs and 17 RBI.
"Sarah is the best shortstop to ever play at Southern Maine. She has great
range in the field and been a consistent run producer for us the past four years.
When the final numbers are in, she'll be among the program's all-time leaders in
most offensive categories. She will be sorely missed next year," said Brown-
Denico.
Mainville had one of the finest seasons posted by a rookie USM pitcher with
her 11-4 record and 1.35 ERA. She worked 104 innings allowing just 68 hits (4.58
hits per 7 innings) and 14 walks while striking out 102. She was picked as the
LEC Rookie of the Week once during the season.
"Katie has a bright future with our program. She came in this season and
established herself as one of the top pitchers in the conference," commented
Brown-Denico.
The Huskies finished the regular season 25-12 overall and 9-5 in the Little
East. They were eliminated in the first round of the championship tournament by
eventual champion Keene State College.

GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore pitcher Meghan McLoughlin (Brattleboro, Vt.)
twirled a no-hitter to lift the visiting Keene State College Owls to a 3-0 upset
over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the opening round of the Little
East Conference Tournament.
Keene State improved to 21-11, and will face number-one seed Western
Connecticut in the double-elimination round of the tournament on Friday. Southern
Maine, which fell to 23-12, will conclude regular-season play tomorrow afternoon
when it hosts Bates College for a doubleheader.
After junior Caroline Kurkowski (Niskayuna, N.Y.) led off the bottom of the
second with a single, freshman Abby Blanchette (Webster, N.H.) followed with a
home run to give Keene State the lead for good. Junior Kerry Marsh (Meriden, N.H.)
led off the third with a double, and later came home with an insurance run.
McLoughlin ensured the lead would stand by retiring the first 15 batters
before allowing a pair of walks in the fifth inning. However, with two on and two

Kristen Tong's (Swanzey, N.H.) sacrifice fly scored Cote to give the Huskies the
2-1 triumph. Sophomore RHP Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.) fanned 10 and
scattered three hits to earn the complete game win.
In the nightcap, Keene State freshman Abby Blanchette (Webster, N.H.) ripped
a bases-loaded triple in the first inning to help the Owls build a 4-0 lead.

take a 7-4 lead through six innings of play.
Southern Maine rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the
game at 7-7 and set the stage for Mullen's late-game heroics.

Southern Maine, Plymouth State Split Two
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - After four postponements, the Plymouth State College
softball team finally played its first home games of the season Thursday afternoon
at D&M Park, splitting a Little East Conference doubleheader with the University
of Southern Maine.
The Panthers won the opener 3-2 behind the pitching of sophomore Kim Jeffs
(Stoughton, Mass.), who took a no-hitter into the sixth inning but had to hold on
for the complete-game victory. The Huskies came back to take the nightcap as
freshman Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine) tossed a four-hit shutout, her
third whitewash of the season.
The outcome leaves PSC at 19-6 overall and 5-5 in the Little East, while USM
is now 22-10 overall and 8-4 in conference play. The LEC regular season concludes
this weekend.
PSC took a 1-0 lead in the second inning of the opener when senior Adriene
Harvey (Nantucket, Mass.) doubled and came around to score on a double by junior
Kristen Balles (Manchester, N.H.). The Panthers added two more in the fifth when
sophomore Anna Godard (Florence, Mass.) walked and junior Maria Curran
(Scarborough, Maine) cracked a two-run homer, her first career round-tripper.
Jeffs, meanwhile, kept the Huskies hitless until the sixth when junior Emily
Forbes (North Berwick, Maine) smacked a one-out double. She advanced a base on an
infield out, but was picked off third by Harvey, the Panther catcher, to end the
inning.
The Huskies got on the board in the seventh when junior Angela Cote (Windham,
Maine) singled and senior Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine) followed with a two-run
homer. Sophomore Kristen Tong (Swanzey, N.H.) doubled to put the tying run in
scoring position, but Jeffs struck out the final Husky batter to preserve the win.
Jeffs, who fanned the first seven Huskies she faced, finished the game with 14
strikeouts.
Mainville limited the Panthers to four singles in the nightcap, while
striking out five and improving her record to 10-3. The Huskies got one run in
the third inning on an RBI triple by Heath, and added an unearned insurance run in
the sixth on an RBI single by freshman Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine).
Jeffs went the distance for PSC again in the nightcap, but took the loss to
drop to 16-4.
PSC wraps up the regular season this weekend with two LEC twinbills -
Saturday at UMass Boston (1 p.m.) and Sunday at home against defending LEC

Southern Maine Sweeps Bowdoin; 1-0, 4-3 (6 Innings)
GORHAM, Maine - Sophomore pitcher Kari Vance (Lincoln, Maine) twirled a
three-hit gem in the opener, and freshman Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine)
drove in the game-winning run in the second game, as the University of Southern
Maine Huskies extended their current winning streak to five in a row by sweeping
the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon.
The Huskies took game one by a 1-0 margin, and held a 4-3 lead through six
complete in the nightcap when the game was called due to rain.
Southern Maine, which has won 11-of-12 contests, improved to 13-5 and will
entertain the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth tomorrow afternoon starting at
3:00 p.m. Bowdoin, which fell to 5-11, will travel to Colby on Wednesday.
The opener featured a pitchers' duel between Vance and Bowdoin College junior
Erin Hanley (Foxboro, Mass.). Hanley, who retired the first eight Southern Maine
batters, scattered four hits and fanned three while going the distance.
However, Southern Maine broke through with the game's lone run in the fourth.
Sophomore Ashley Woodcock (Jay, Maine) led off the frame with a single and stole
second base, before scoring on a double from senior Renee Heath (Brunswick,
Maine).
Bowdoin was unable to mount a serious threat, and advanced only two runners
as far as second base. Vance, who retired 16 consecutive batters at one point,
surrendered three singles and struck out three to record her third win of the
campaign.
In the second game, Bowdoin grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, but
Southern Maine answered with single runs in the second, third, fourth and fifth to
forge a 4-1 lead. The Huskies threatened to take command in the bottom of the
fifth, when they loaded the bases with no outs. Hanley came on in relief, and
Riitano proceeded to drive in the eventual winning run with a sacrifice fly.
Hanley retired the next two batters to end the threat.
In the top of the sixth, Bowdoin scored twice to pull within 4-3. Freshman
Megan Rodgers (Chesterfield, Mo.) had an RBI single, and freshman Laura Perovich
(Hanover, N.H.) followed with an RBI-double. However, Southern Maine sophomore
pitcher Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.) stranded the tying run at third
base.
Henderson, who improved to 4-3, scattered four hits and fanned four, while

score the winning run. Sophomore Ashley Woodcock (Jay, Maine) led off and advanced
to second on a throwing error. She later scored when the St. Joseph's catcher
overthrew the pitcher and the ball rolled into the outfield.
In the second game, sophomore Helene Liaci (Cliffton, N.J.) led off the
bottom of the second with a triple, and scored on a perfectly-executed sacrifice
bunt by junior Deborah Bain (Lawrence, Mass.). Southern Maine responded with a run
in the fifth, when Gatcomb doubled, took third on Woodcock's sacrifice bunt, and
scored on a pass ball.
Southern Maine broke the game open with a three-run sixth inning to forge a
comfortable 4-1 advantage. McLean led off with a double, advanced to second when
freshman Kristi Steward (Norridgewock, Maine) reached on an error, and scored on a
sacrifice fly by Forbes. Gatcomb followed with a two-run homer. Gatcomb, who also
stroked a single and a double, finished the game by going three-for-three, with
two runs scored and two RBI.
St. Joe's cut the deficit in half with a single run in the bottom of the
sixth, but freshman Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine) recorded two of her six
strikeouts in the seventh inning to earn the win. For the game, Mainville
scattered three hits and allowed three walks.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Sophomore RHP Melissa Henderson (Newburyport, Mass.)
hurled a complete-game, two-hit shutout as the University of Southern Maine
Huskies blanked the Suffolk University Rams, 1-0, to give the Huskies a sweep of

5-3, for their first win of the season after three losses on Friday.
The two wins improved the Huskies’ record to 2-3. St. Lawrence lost for

In the opener, St. Lawrence broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning when
senior April Regonlinski (Wayland, Mass.) hit a solo homer off USM freshman RHP
Katie Mainville (Coopers Mills, Maine). The Saints added two more in the sixth
inning when graduate student Meredith Eisenhut (Mohawk, N.Y.) reached on a bunt
single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a throwing error as
she tried to go to third, and a solo home run by sophomore Heather Tuttle (Rome,
N.Y.).
Southern Maine got on the board in the seventh against the Saints junior
pitcher Tricia King (Hamilton, N.Y.) when junior OF Darci Holland (Buckfield,
Maine) scored on an error on freshman Kristi Steward’s (Norridgewock, Maine)
ground ball. Freshman PH Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine) followed with a
two-run homer to tie the game and chase King from the circle.

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point exploded
for five runs in the fourth inning on four hits, two walks, and a costly

inning.

single to score senior 3B Brooke Woller (Wausau, Wis.) who had walked and give
the Pointers the lead for good. After Feidt stole second, she scored on an RBI
single by senior OF Jill Van Wychen (Kaukauna, Wis.).
Junior RHP Jeanann Briski (Berlin, Wis.) picked up the win in relief for
Stevens Point. Senior RHP Karen Guckenberger (South Milwaukee, Wis.), the
winning pitcher in the earlier game, came on to pitch three scoreless innings to
pick up a save. Sophomore RHP Kari Vance (Lincoln, Maine) went the distance for
USM and was tagged with the loss.
Tong paced USM’s 13-hit attack with three hits while freshman OF Kristi
Steward (Skowhegan, Maine) had a pair of doubles. McLean and senior 3B Renee
Heath (Brunswick, Maine) each had a double and single for the Huskies.

Renee Heath & Sarah McLean Named USM Softball Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior infielders Renee Heath (Brunswick, Maine) and Sarah
McLean (Portsmouth, R.I.) have been named co-captains of the University of
Southern Maine Huskies softball team for the upcoming 2003 season. Eighth-year
head coach Bonny Brown-Denico made the announcement.
The Huskies open their 2003 season with a six-day, 12-game southern trip to
Ft. Myers, Florida. USM will play single games against Trinity College and
Skidmore College on Thursday (March 20) to open the campaign.
Two of Southern Maine's top offensive players, Heath and McLean are expected
to carry a major share of the offense this season while providing solid defense on
the left side of the infield. Heath was a National Fastpitch Coaches Association
(NFCA) All-Northeast second team pick, and an All-ECAC and All-Little East
Conference first team selection, at third base last year. McLean was an NFCA All-
Northeast Region third team at-large honoree in 2002, and is a two-time (2000 and
2001) All-Little East second team pick at shortstop.
"Renee and Sarah have played a major part in our success the past two
seasons," said Brown-Denico, who heads into her eighth season as head coach with a
170-118-3 record. "I expect that they'll be major contributors offensively at the
top of the lineup and they'll anchor the defense on the left side. Both have a
ton of experience and they're strong leaders on and off the field."
Heath batted a team-leading .431 (56 for 130) with 24 runs scored, five
doubles, five triples, three home runs and 17 RBI while committing just five
errors in 117 fielding chances in 41 games last season. She led the team in five
offensive categories, and was in the top three in four others.
McLean, one of the top power hitters and run producers in the program's
history, hit .339 (41 for 121) with six doubles and led the team with five home
runs and 27 RBI in 41 games.
Southern Maine was 28-15-1 last season, advanced to the Little East
Conference tournament championship game before falling to Western Connecticut
State University, and earned a berth in the ECAC Division III New England
Tournament. The ECAC berth was the team's fifth postseason tournament trip in the
past six seasons.
The remainder of the Huskies' southern trip is as follows: March 21, North
Central (1:00 pm.); March 21, Wisconsin-Stevens Point (4:00 p.m.); March 21,
Amherst (6:00 p.m.); March 22, St. Lawrence (9:00 a.m.); March 22, Suffolk

(11:00 a.m.); March 24, Middlebury (4:00 p.m.); March 25, Bethel (1:00 p.m.);
and March 25, Hartwick (4:00 p.m.).
Southern Maine will open its Little East Conference schedule upon returning
home when it travels to Providence to play Rhode Island College in a doubleheader
March 29 (1:00 p.m.). The remainder of the Huskies' 2003 schedule is as follows:
March 30, at Babson (DH, 12:00 p.m.); April 1, Bowdoin (DH, 3:00 p.m.); April 5,
