Southern Maine Finishes Second at Little East Conference Championships
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham),
sophomores Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) and Steve Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) and
freshman Stefan Kelly (Biddeford, Maine) each advanced to the championship match
of their respective singles flight to help the University of Southern Maine
Huskies finish second at the 2008 Little East Conference Men's Tennis
Championships that concluded Saturday at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Courts at
Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass.
The Huskies, the 2007 champions, scored 13 points to finish second behind
the Salem State College Vikings who won the tournament with 15 points. The
Vikings will receive the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Division III
National Championship tournament. UMass Boston placed third with 12 points
followed by Bridgewater State in fourth with 10 points.
Competing in the first singles flight, Warren defeated Western Connecti-
cut's Wayne Tentler, 7-6 (8), 6-4 in the semifinals to advance to the
championship where he lost to the top seed in the flight, Jovan Jordan-Whitter
of the University of Massachusetts Boston, 6-0, 6-2.
Stevenson earned a hard-fought, 0-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Western
Connecticut's Matt Fogel to advance the championship match of the second singles
flight. Stevenson, the second seed, fell to top-seeded Barry Gorman of
Bridgewater State in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
Lent, the third seed in the third singles flight, took Salem State's Rob
Random, seeded first in the bracket, to three sets in the championship match
before falling 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In his semifinal match, Lent defeated Gio Cuscina
of Bridgewater State 6-3, 5-7, 6-1.
Kelly lost in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 6-4, in the championship of the sixth
singles flight to Salem State's Brian Carlson.
The Huskies concluded their 2008 season with a 5-6 overall record and a 3-3
mark in the conference.

Huskies In Second Place After First Day of the LEC Championship Tournament
Stevenson & Warren Take 1st Doubles Title
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and
sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) won the first flight doubles championship
to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first day of the 2008
Little East Conference men's tennis championship tournament Friday at Dr. Henry
Rosen Memorial Courts at Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Mass.
The Huskies are currently in second place with seven points, trailing the
University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons which has nine points. The
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs are in third place with 6.5
points, followed by the Bridgewater State College Bears in fourth place with six
points. The Rhode Island College Anchormen and the Salem State College Vikings
are tied for fifth place with five points a piece, while the Western Connecticut
State University Colonials are in seventh place with three points.
Stevenson and Warren, the top seed in first doubles, received an opening
round bye and then defeated the fourth-seeded Salem State tandem of Adrien
Malosse and Rob Random, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 to earn a berth into the championship
match. In the championship round, Stevenson and Warren earned a 6-4, 7-6 (7-5)
win over third-seeded Jovan Jordan-Whitter and Paul Braude of UMass Boston.
Warren and Stevenson also won their respective opening round singles
matches to advance to the semifinals. Warren, the second seed in first singles,
defeated UMass Dartmouth’s Christopher Forster 8-1. Seeded second in no. 2
singles, Stevenson defeated the seventh seed, Nate Rebello of Rhode Island
College, 8-3.
Sophomore Steve Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) also earned an opening round
victory defeating Western Connecticut’s Andrew Kelley 8-3. Competing in the
third singles flight, Lent is the third seed. Sophomore Stefan Kelly
(Biddeford, Maine), selected the top seed in the sixth singles flight, received
an opening round bye.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (9:30 a.m.) in the final day
of the 2008 Little East Conference men’s tennis championship tournament. The
winner of the tournament will receive the conference’s automatic bid into the
NCAA Division III National Championship tournament.

Southern Maine Mauls Mitchell 9-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomores Stefan Kelly (Biddeford, Maine) and Steve Lent
(Sharon, N.H./ConVal) each earned 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles action to lead the
University of Southern Maine to a 9-0 sweep of Mitchell College Saturday
afternoon in a non-conference men's tennis match in Gorham.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 5-6 overall. Mitchell, suffering
its fourth straight loss, falls to 2-8.
The Huskies swept all nine points from the Pequots, including Kelly and
Lent's dominating singles wins. Playing up at number two singles for an injured
teammate, Lent defeated Mitchell junior Samuel Mahar (Hoosick, N.Y.). Kelly,
normally the Huskies' sixth singles player, picked up a win at fifth singles
defeating Pequot freshman Will Frohnoefer (Syossett, N.Y.) in straight sets.
Southern Maine returns to action on Friday and Saturday (April 25-26) at the
Little East Conference Championship tournament being hosted by Bridgewater State
College. Mitchell travels to Post University on Sunday (1:00 p.m.).

Colby Defeats Southern Maine 9-0
WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior Zach Schuman (Watchung, N.J.) won at first
singles and junior Nick Rosen-Wachs (Scarsdale, N.Y.) took the second singles
match as the Colby College Mules overpowered the University of Southern Maine
Huskies 9-0 in a non-conference men's tennis match Thursday afternoon in
Waterville.
With the win, Colby improve to 7-5 overall. Dropping its second consecu-
tive match, Southern Maine dips to 4-6.
Schuman defeated USM sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) 6-2, 6-2 in
first singles, while Rosen-Wachs downed Husky junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond,
Maine/Windham) 6-0, 1-0 (retired) as Colby swept both the doubles and singles
portions of the match.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (2:00 p.m.) when it hosts
Mitchell College in a non-conference match. Colby hosts Hamilton College on
Saturday (10:00 a.m.).

Bridgewater State Downs Southern Maine 8-1
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- Senior Barry Gorman (Hopedale, Mass.) and junior
Matt Charest (Somerset, Mass.) led the Bridgewater State College Bears to an 8-1
win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday afternoon in a Little
East Conference men’s tennis match at the Dr. Henry Rosen Memorial Tennis Courts
in Bridgewater, Mass.
The Bears swept the three doubles matches and took five of six singles
matches to halt a three-match slide. The Bears improve to 3-5 overall and earn
their first win in conference play to move to 1-3. Suffering its first loss in
three matches, USM drops to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
Charest battled to a win at first singles as he rallied from a set down to
defeat USM sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 in the super
tiebreaker. Charest also took an 8-5 victory at first doubles with junior
teammate Giovanni Cuscina (Mansfield, Mass.).
Gorman grabbed his eighth consecutive singles match victory to remain
undefeated on the season, pulling out a 7-5, 4-6, 11-9 in the super tiebreaker
win over Southern Maine junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham). Gorman
joined junior Brendon Barbo (Yarmouthport, Mass.) for an 8-3 win at second
doubles.
Southern Maine sophomore Stefan Kelly (Biddeford, Maine) secured the
Huskies’ lone point of the match with a 6-2, 7-6 (5) win over Bridgewater State
freshman Justin Lipomi (Lowell, Mass.) at sixth singles.
Southern Maine travels to Colby College on Thursday (5:00 p.m.) for a non-
conference match. Bridgewater State hosts Clark University on Wednesday (3:30
p.m.) in non-conference action.

Warren Named LEC Player of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine)
of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team has been named the
Little East Conference Player of the Week for the week of April 7-13.
Warren helped Southern Maine to a 3-0 record during the week, including a
2-0 mark in Little East Conference matches. Playing at number one singles,
Warren won all three of his matches, including a hard-earned, 7-5, 6-3 win over
senior Wayne Tentler (Johannesburg, South Africa/Staples) of Western Connecticut
State University. Warren's win at no. 1 singles, helped the Huskies to 7-2 win
over the previously undefeated Colonials.
Warren also posted a 3-0 mark in no. 1 doubles action along with teammate
junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham).
For the spring season, Warren is presently 5-3 overall in singles matches
and 6-2 in doubles matches.
The Huskies, winners of three straight, are 4-4 overall and 3-2 in
conference action. Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.)
against LEC foe Bridgewater State College.

Southern Maine Defeats Western Connecticut 7-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and
sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) each had hard-earned singles victories to
lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team to an 7-2 win
over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials Saturday afternoon in
Little East Conference action at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine.
The Huskies handed the Colonials their first loss of the season, dropping
them to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the Little East. Earning their third straight
win, the Huskies improve to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in conference action.
Warren and Stevenson teamed at first doubles to defeat the Western
Connecticut duo of senior Wayne Tentler (Johannesburg, South Africa/Staples) and
junior Matt Fogel (Westport, Conn./Staples) 9-7. Warren then worked his way to
a 7-5, 6-3 win over Tentler at first singles, while Stevenson downed Fogel 6-2,
6-4 at second singles.
Freshman Patrick Matysek (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) and senior Jarret
Coleman (East Hampton, Conn.) earned the Colonials' two points of the match. At
fourth singles, Matysek defeated USM junior Matt McGowan (Waterville, Maine)
6-7, 7-6, 6-3 in three sets. Coleman downed freshman Adam Mitchell (Windham,
Maine) 3-6, 7-5 (10-7) in the super tiebreaker at fifth singles.
Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) against Bridgewater
State College. Western Connecticut travels to Manhattanville College on
Wednesday (3:30 p.m.).

Southern Maine Downs Thomas 9-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and
sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) spearheaded a dominating team performance
by the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team en route to a 9-0
sweep of the Thomas College Terriers in a non-conference match Thursday
afternoon at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham.
The win is the second straight for Southern Maine which improves its
overall record to 3-4. Thomas drops to 2-4 with the loss.
Stevenson and Warren proved to be powerful tandem in doubles and each
claimed victories in singles competition as the Huskies won all nine points from
the Terriers. Stevenson and Warren defeated the Terrier team of freshman Jeremy
Cliff (Hermon, Maine) and senior Shane Marques (Taunton, Mass.) 8-1 in first
doubles. Warren went on to claim a convincing 6-0, 6-2 win over Cliff at first
singles, while Stevenson downed Marques 6-2, 6-1 at second singles.
The Huskies overpowered the Terriers giving up only 13 games throughout the
match. Competing at sixth singles, Southern Maine sophomore Stefan Kelly
(Biddeford, Maine) claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win over freshman Andrew Folan (Windham,
Conn.), while USM freshman Adam Mitchell (Windham, Maine) churned out a 6-0, 6-1
win over senior Ben Kenney (Unity, Maine) at fifth singles.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it hosts
Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference match. Thomas
returns to action at Johnson State College on Saturday (2:00 p.m.).

Southern Maine Defeats Rhode Island College 6-3
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and
sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) each won their singles match and combined
to capture a point in doubles action as the University of Southern Maine Huskies
men's tennis team defeated the Rhode Island College Anchormen 6-3 in a Little
East Conference match Tuesday at the Costello Sports Complex in Gorham, Maine.
The Huskies' win halts a three-match slide and improves their record to 2-4
overall and 2-2 in the conference. Rhode Island College, suffering its fourth
straight loss, dips to 2-4 overall and remains winless in the LEC at 0-3.
Stevenson and Warren teamed up to earn Southern Maine's only doubles point,
picking up an 8-3 win at first doubles over the tandem of junior Eric Boffa
(Greenville, R.I./Smithfield) and senior Tom Lapierre (Mapleville,
R.I./Burrillville).
Trailing 2-1 after the completion of the doubles matches, Stevenson and
Warren led the Huskies' charge through the singles matches. Warren took a
straight sets 6-0, 6-0 win over senior Lorne Teeter (Warwick, R.I./Pilgrim) at
first singles. Stevenson earned a 6-4, 6-2 decision over freshman Nathan
Rebello (Pawtucket, R.I./Tolman) as the Huskies won five out of the six singles
matches for the 6-3 victory.
USM sophomore Steve Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) earned a 6-2, 6-1 win over
Boffa at third singles, while freshman Adam Mitchell (Windham, Maine) and
sophomore Stefan Kelly (Biddeford, Maine) each gutted out 6-3, 7-5 wins at fifth
and sixth singles respectively. Mitchell defeated junior David Haggerty
(Woonsocket, R.I.) and Kelly clipped freshman Michael Aiello (Scituate, R.I.).
Lapierre earned the Anchormen's lone point in singles action, defeating junior
Matt McGowan (Waterville, Maine) 6-2, 7-5.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) when it hosts
Thomas College in a non-conference match. Rhode Island College faces Nichols
College at home on Thursday (4:00 p.m.).

UMass Boston Earns First Win Defeats Southern Maine 5-2
BOSTON -- The University of Massachusetts Boston men's tennis team earned
two of three doubles points en route to its first win of the season by defeating
the University of Southern Maine 5-2 in a Little East Conference match Sunday
afternoon at the Boston College High School courts in Boston. The match was
halted after the Beacons had won five points due to weather.
With their first win of the season, the Beacons improve to 1-5 overall and
even out at 1-1 in conference action. Suffering their third straight loss, the
Huskies dip to 1-4 overall and 1-2 in the LEC.
UMB graduate student Matthias Busch (Bonn, Germany/Gymnasium am Oelberg)
and junior Amit Kumar (Bangalore, India/Malden) teamed for an 8-4 win over
Southern Maine's sophomore Steve Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) and freshman Adam
Mitchell (Windham, Maine) at second doubles to earn the Beacons' first point of
the match. UMB junior Ali Al-Sabbagh (West Roxbury, Mass./Catholic Memorial)
and freshman Reinaldo Lopes (Brussels, Belgium/Institut Saint-Jean Baptiste)
claimed an 8-2 win over sophomore Stefan Kelly (Biddeford, Maine) and freshman
Jack Cowie (Scarborough, Maine) at third doubles.
Southern Maine junior Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) had a hand
in both USM points. Stevenson earned a 7-6 (6), 6-0 win at second singles over
junior Paul Braude (West Yarmouth, Mass./Dennis-Yarmouth) after teaming with
sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) to defeat Braude and junior Jovan Jordan-
Whitter (Hamilton, Bermuda/Warwick Academy) at first doubles, 8-1.
Jordan-Whitter, Al-Sabbagh, and Lopes also posted singles wins for the
Beacons.
Lent led Busch, 6-3, 5-7, 2-1 at third singles when the match was halted.
Kumar led Mitchell at fifth singles 5-2 (40-0).
Southern Maine hosts LEC foe Rhode Island College on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) in
its next match. The Beacons host conference rival Bridgewater State, also on
Tuesday (3:00 p.m.).

USM-UMass Boston Match Moved to Sunday
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics
announced today that tomorrow's Little East Conference men’s tennis match
between USM and the University of Massachusetts Boston in Boston has been moved
to Sunday, April 6. The match will be played at BC High School starting at 1:30
p.m.

Endicott Downs Southern Maine 8-1
BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Endicott College Gulls men’s tennis team earned its
sixth consecutive victory Tuesday afternoon defeating the University of Southern
Maine Huskies 8-1 in a non-conference men’s tennis match in Beverly, Mass.
Earning a school record sixth straight win, Endicott improves to 7-2.
Suffering its second straight defeat, Southern Maine dips to 1-3 overall.
The Gulls captured two of three doubles matches, led by an 8-5 win by
junior Josh Schoen (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore Dan Murray (Coventry, R.I.)
over USM sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) and junior Derek Stevenson
(Raymond, Maine/Windham) at no. 1 doubles.
Southern Maine scored its only point of the match in no. 2 doubles as
sophomore Steve Lent (Sharon, N.H./ConVal) and freshman Adam Mitchell (Windham,
Maine/Windham) earned an 8-2 win over freshman Devon Locke (St. Croix, Virgin
Islands) and junior Gabriel Moraga (Marlborough, Mass.)
In singles action, the Gulls took all six matches, again led by Murray and
Schoen. Murray defeated Warren 7-5, 6-3 at first singles, while Schoen took a
6-3, 7-6 decision over Stevenson at second singles.
Southern Maine travels to the University of Massachusetts Boston for a
Little East Conference match on Saturday (1:00 p.m.). Endicott travels to
Wentworth Institute of Technology on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).

Southern Maine Falls to Salem State 5-4
SALEM, Mass. -- Freshmen Rob Random (Newbury, Mass./Triton Regional) and
Alex Eisath (Renon, Italy/HOB-Kuntner), along with senior Kyle Watson (Saugus,
Mass.), each earned a singles victory to help the Salem State College Vikings to
a hard-fought, 5-4 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday
afternoon in a Little East Conference tennis match at Richard H. Rockett Arena
in Salem, Mass.
The win is the second straight for the Vikings who improve to 3-3 overall
and remain undefeated in Little East Conference action at 2-0. Southern Maine
falls to 1-2 and evens out at 1-1 in the LEC.
The Vikings won three singles points and captured two of the three doubles
points to defeat the Huskies. Random defeated USM sophomore Steve Lent (Sharon,
N.H./ConVal) 6-4, 6-2 at third singles, while Watson defeated USM junior Matt
McGowan (Waterville, Maine) by the same score in fourth singles. At fifth
singles, Eisath worked his way to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Husky freshman Adam
Mitchell (Windham, Maine).
Both Watson and Eisath earned doubles victories with the help of their
teammates. Watson teamed senior Rob Thomas (Saugus, Mass.) for an 8-3 win over
Lent and Mitchell at no. 2 doubles. Eisath also earned an 8-3 win at no. 3
doubles playing along side of sophomore Brian Carleson (Lynn, Mass.).
Sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) earned a tough victory for the
Huskies at first singles, defeating Salem State sophomore Adrien Malosse (Triel
Sur Seine, France/North Broward Prep) in three sets 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. Junior Derek
Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) defeated Thomas at number two singles, 6-0,
7-5, and teamed with Warren to edge Malosse and Random, 8-6, at number one
doubles.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) traveling to
Endicott College for a non-conference match. Salem State travels to Gordon
College on Thursday (4:00 p.m.) for a non-conference match.

Southern Maine Defeats UMass Dartmouth 6-3
FALMOUTH, Maine -- Sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) and junior Derek
Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) teamed to earn a victory at no. 1 doubles and
then each won their singles match to lead the University of Southern Maine
Huskies men's tennis team to a 6-3 win over the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth Corsairs Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference match at the
Portland Athletic Club in Falmouth, Maine.
Earning their first win of the season, the Huskies improve to 1-1 overall
and 1-0 in the Little East. UMass Dartmouth falls to 1-2 and begins its
conference season with a 0-1 record.
Warren and Stevenson paired up at no. 1 doubles to earn an 8-4 win over the
UMass Dartmouth tandem of junior Chris Forster (Reading, Mass.) and sophomore
Ken Sims (Chelmsford, Mass.) as the Huskies won two out of the three available
doubles points.
Playing at no. 1 singles, Warren earned a commanding 6-2, 6-3 win over
UMass Dartmouth senior Dave Gogoi (Seekonk, Mass./Attleboro Regional) while
Stevenson cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Forster at no. 2 singles.
Freshman Adam Mitchell (Windham, Maine) earned his first collegiate victory
for USM defeating Corsair freshman Andrew Zappala (Pentucket, Mass.) 6-4, 6-2 at
no. 5 singles.
Southern Maine returns to action on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) traveling to Salem
State College for a Little East Conference match. UMass Dartmouth hosts

USM-UMass Dartmouth Match Moved to Portland AC
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Department of Athletics
announced today that this Saturday's (March 29) Little East Conference men's
tennis match between USM and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has been
moved to the Portland Athletic Club indoor courts in Falmouth, Maine. The move
was necessitated by the Home and Garden Show that is taking place this weekend
in the USM Field House.
The matches are scheduled to get underway at 2:00 p.m.

Bates Blanks Southern Maine 9-0
GORHAM, Maine -- The Bates College Bobcats swept all nine matches
Thursday afternoon en route to their fourth straight win, a 9-0 decision over
the University of Southern Maine Huskies at the USM field house indoor courts.
Bates, ranked seventh in this week's Northeast Region rankings, swept the
three doubles matches prior to taking all six singles contests. The Bobcats
improve to 7-2 on the season. The match was the spring season opener for the
Huskies.
The best match of the day was at number one singles where Bates sophomore
Amrit Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) and USM sophomore Josh Warren (Hermon,
Maine) split sets, each winning 6-3, before Rupasinghe won a super tiebreaker,
10-7, to take the match. Rupasinghe also combined with junior Ben Stein
(Pelham, N.Y.) for an 8-4 win at first doubles over Warren and junior Derek
Stevenson (Windham, Maine).
Southern Maine returns to the courts on March 29 when it hosts the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in the teams Little East Conference
opener. Bates is off until April 3 when it travels to in-state rival Bowdoin
College.
