UMASS DARTMOUTH WINS THIRD CONSECUTIVE L.E.C. MEN'S TENNIS TITLE
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth captured titles in eight of the
nine brackets Sunday, and ran away with first place at the Ninth Annual Little East Conference
Men's Tennis Championships at Plymouth State College's P.E. Center Courts.
The Corsairs, who earned the title for the third year in a row, won the tournament
with 26 points. Runner-up Southern Maine, which won the only bracket not taken by UMD
(No. 1 doubles), finished with 13 points, just ahead of third place Rhode Island College (12
points). Host Plymouth State placed fourth with seven points, followed by Western
Connecticut with four and UMass Boston with 1.5.
UMass Dartmouth captured a complete sweep of the six singles brackets. Senior
John Guilfoy (Mansfield, MA) won the title at No. 1 singles for the second straight year,
defeating USM's Darryl Hitchcock (Portland, ME) in the finals, 6-1, 6-4. UMD exchange
student Jan Bussiek (Preetz, Germany) was the No. 2 singles champion, knocking off
Plymouth State's Mike Bradley (Concord, NH) in the finals, 6-0, 6-1.
The other singles champions from UMD included sophomore Mike Gomes (N.
Dartmouth, MA) at No. 3, senior Anthony Baldman (Dedham, MA) at No. 4, junior Chris
Costa (Mansfield, MA) at No. 5, and sophomore Casey Hohne (Mattapoisett, MA) at No.
6.
The No. 1 doubles crown was captured by USM's Hitchcock and Kevin Vincent
(Auburn, ME), who broke UMD's perfect tournament by defeating Corsairs Guilfoy and
Bussiek in the finals, 6-3, 6-3. The Corsairs did win the other doubles titles, with Gomes and
Steven Gordon (Middletown, MA) winning at No. 2, and Costa and Brian Sexton (Canton,
MA) victorious at No. 3.
UMD has won three straight titles after Rhode Island College won four consecutive
from 1992-95. UMass Boston won the first LEC crown in 1990, and PSC captured its only
championship in 1991.

SOUTHERN MAINE LEADS LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE MEN'S TENNIS TOURNEY
CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT TO CONTINUE SUNDAY
PLYMOUTH, N.H. - The University of Southern Maine leads a six-team field after
the first day play at the Ninth Annual Little East Conference Men's Tennis Championships,
being played at the P.E. Center Courts at Plymouth (N.H.) State College.
Southern Maine has scored 10 points, with Rhode Island College and two-time
defending champion UMass Dartmouth tied for second place with six points apiece. Host
Plymouth State is fourth with five points, Western Connecticut is fifth with two points, and
UMass Boston is sixth with one-half point.
The six schools played the quarterfinals, semifinals and consolation rounds of the
three doubles brackets, and the quarterfinals of the singles brackets. The remainder of the
tournament will be held Sunday at PSC, beginning with singles semi-finals and consolation
rounds at 9:00 a.m. The doubles finals are scheduled for 11:00 a.m., with the singles finals
slated for 1:00 p.m.
UMass Dartmouth will be represented in all three of Sunday's doubles finals, as well
as having all six singles players still alive. USM has two doubles finalists and RIC has one, and
both schools have all six singles entries still playing. PSC has five singles players still alive,
and Western Connecticut has one.
