Middlebury Knocks Southern Maine Out of NCAA Tournament 5-0
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Middlebury College Panthers men's tennis team swept
all three doubles matches and held convincing leads in the six singles matches
en route to a 5-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the
second round of the 2007 NCAA Division III men's tennis championship Saturday
afternoon at Middlebury College.
The loss eliminated USM from the NCAA tournament and concludes the Huskies'
stellar season with a 9-3 record. Middlebury, winners of its last 15 matches,
improves to 19-1 overall and advances to the regional final on Sunday (12:00
p.m.). The Panthers will face Amherst College. Amherst defeated M.I.T., 5-0,
in the other semifinal match Saturday.
Middlebury won the three doubles matches, and the first set of all six
singles matches losing just two games. Freshman Andrew Thomson (W. Bloomfield,
Mich.) earned the first singles point for the Panthers defeating USM sophomore
Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine) 6-0, 6-0 in the no. 5 singles slot. Middlebury
wrapped up the victory with a 6-0, 6-0 win at sixth singles. Junior Filip
Marinkovic (Toronto, Ontario) downed USM freshman Ian Carey (Milo, Maine) for
the deciding point.
Completing one of its most successful seasons in the history of the
program, the 2007 Huskies finished the season with a team-record .750 winning
percentage with a 9-3 record and an unblemished 6-0 mark in the Little East
Conference. Southern Maine captured the 2007 Little East Conference
championship to earn its first-ever bid into the NCAA tournament. This year's
championship was the Huskies fourth LEC crown in five years, and their third
consecutive (2005, 2006 - co-champions - and 2007).

Southern Maine Rallies to Defeat Ithaca 5-4
Huskies Advance In NCAA Tournament to Play Middlebury
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies advanced to
the second round of the 2007 NCAA Division III men's tennis tournament with a
5-4, come-from-behind win over the Ithaca College Bombers Friday afternoon at
Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 9-2 overall and will face host
Middlebury College at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. Ithaca concludes its season at
9-13. The win is the first ever for Southern Maine in NCAA tournament history
as the Huskies are making their inaugural appearance in the national
championship tournament.
Southern Maine staged an impressive comeback to overcome a 4-0 deficit,
winning five consecutive singles matches for the win. Ithaca took a 3-0 lead
sweeping the doubles portion of the match, and expanded its lead to 4-0 when
junior Jeff Buffum (Morristown, N.J.) took a quick 6-0, 6-2 decision over USM
freshman Ian Carey (Milo, Maine) at no. 6 singles.
Southern Maine, however, would not lose another match, winning the other
five singles contests. Senior Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) earned USM's
first point of the afternoon defeating Ithaca freshman Danny Wolk (Potomac, Md.)
6-0, 6-3 at no. 4 singles. Freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) made it two in
a row when he won 6-0, 6-4 over freshman Taylor Borda (Chester, N.J.) at no. 2
singles.
The Huskies inched to within a point of the Bombers when senior Justin
Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) cruised to a 6-4, 6-0 win over senior Joe Young
(Saylorsburg, Pa.) at no. 3 singles. Senior captain Craig Spann (Redding,
Conn.) tied the score at 4-4 with a hard-fought win at no. 1 singles, overcoming
a 6-3 loss in the first set to win the next two 6-4, 6-4 to defeat senior Colin
Flynn (Needham, Mass.).
Southern Maine captured the match and its first-ever NCAA tournament win
with a grueling three-set win at no. 5 singles. Sophomore Derek Stevenson
(Raymond, Maine) provided the Huskies with the winning margin, battling back
after losing the first set to pick up a 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over freshman Liam
Berkowitz (Pleasantville, N.Y.).

Josh Warren Named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- For the fifth consecutive week, University of Southern
Maine freshman men's tennis player Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) has been named
the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week. The announcement of the LEC
Player and Rookie of the Week awards for the week of April 23-29 was made by the
conference office Monday afternoon.
Warren continued to dominate at the no. 2 singles spot, capturing the no. 2
singles flight at the Little East Conference Championships Tournament this past
weekend. With Warren leading the way, Southern Maine captured the 2007 LEC
championship, earning its fourth conference title in the last five years (2003,
2005, 2006 - co-champion - and 2007). The Huskies also received their first-
ever bid to the NCAA National Championship Tournament earning the conference's
automatic bid as the tournament champion.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Warren defeated Paul Braude of
the University of Massachusetts Boston 6-2, 6-3, in his semifinal round match,
and Barry Gorman of Bridgewater State College in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, to
capture the crown. Warren is the first USM player to win the no. 2 singles
flight in the 18-year history of the championships.
Warren also teamed with senior captain Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel
Barlow) to win the no. 1 doubles title. Warren and Spann, the top seeded team,
downed Alexis Roux and Daniel Bueno of UMass Boston, 6-1, 6-4, in the
semifinals, and edged the Bridgewater State tandem of Matt Kelly and Matt
Charest, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) to win the title.
Southern Maine returns to action on Friday (1:00 p.m.) in the first round
of the NCAA Division III Tournament. The Huskies will face the Bombers of
Ithaca College in a first round match at Middlebury College in Middlebury,
Vermont. The winner gets to play Middlebury in one semifinal match on Saturday.
The other semifinal match pits M.I.T. against Amherst College.

Southern Maine Wins LEC Championship
Huskies Earn Automatic Bid into NCAA Tourney
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis
team won four of six singles and two of three doubles flights en route to
capturing the 2007 Little East Conference Championship Sunday afternoon at Rhode
Island College in Providence.
Winning its fourth LEC title in the past five years (2003, 2005, 2006,
2007), Southern Maine totaled 19.5 points and earned the conference's automatic
bid into the NCAA Division III National Championship tournament. It is the
first time that the USM men's tennis team has earned a bid into the NCAA
tournament. The Huskies competed on the national level at the NAIA level,
participating it the NAIA District Championship from 1972-1985, winning the
district championship in 1980. The Huskies advanced to the NAIA National
Championship tournament twice in 1972 and in 1980.
The Huskies will begin competition at the 2007 NCAA Division III Men's
Tennis Championship on Friday (May 4). The first and second rounds of the
competition (May 4-6) will be at selected campus sites. The NCAA is schedule to
release its tournament selections and information on Monday (April 30) at 8:00
p.m. The finals will be hosted May 15-20 at Washington University's Dwight
Davis Center in St. Louis, Mo.
Seniors Justin and Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine), sophomore Derek
Stevenson (Raymond, Maine) and freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) each won
their respective singles flight. Each player entered the LEC tournament as the
top seed in their flight.
Stevenson captured the fifth singles championship with a 6-1, 6-3 decision
over second-seeded senior Howard Smyth (Haverhill, Mass.) of Bridgewater State
College. Chris Chaffee gutted out a 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (6) thriller in the fourth
singles final over Bridgewater State senior Matt Kelly (Tiverton, R.I.), while
Justin Chaffee cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 straight set victory over Western
Connecticut senior Colin Robertson (Newton, Conn.) in the third singles final.
Warren won the no. 2 singles championship with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bridgewater
State junior Barry Gorman (Hopedale, Mass.).
Southern Maine also captured the no. 1 double and no. 2 doubles
championships. Warren teamed with senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn.) to take a
hard-fought 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) victory over Bridgewater State's Kelly and sophomore
Matt Charest (Somerset, Mass.). Stevenson and Chris Chaffee won the second
doubles flight championship defeating UMass Dartmouth senior Chris Sims
(Chelmsford, Mass.) and freshman Ken Sims (Chelmsford, Mass.) 6-3, 6-1.
Bridgewater State, which was in first place after the first day of the
tournament, finished second with 17.0 points. UMass Dartmouth placed third with
11.0 points, while Western Connecticut (9.5 points) placed fourth. Rhode Island
College placed fifth with 8.0 points, while UMass Boston placed sixth with 4.5
points and Salem State rounded out the competition placing seventh with 4.0
points.

Southern Maine In Third After First Day of LEC Championships
PROVIDENCE -- Senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and
freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) captured the no. 1 doubles championship to
lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team in the first day
of competition at the 2007 Little East Conference Men's Tennis Championships
being held at Rhode Island College.
Spann and Warren defeated the Bridgewater State tandem of senior Matt Kelly
(Tiverton, R.I.) and sophomore Matt Charest (Somerset, Mass.) 6-4, 7-6, (7-5).
USM senior Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and sophomore
Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) captured the no. 2 doubles championship
defeating the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth pair of senior Chris Sims
(Chelmsford, Mass.) and freshman Ken Sims (Chelmsford, Mass.) 6-3, 6-1.
Through the first day of the championship tournament, Southern Maine is in
third place with 7.0 points. Bridgewater State leads in first place with 11.0
points, while the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is in second with 8.0
points. Following today's competition, the three doubles flight champions were
determined and opening round action of the six singles flights were completed.
The semifinals and finals, as well as consolation action, of the six

Spann and Warren Sweep Little East Conference Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and
freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
men's tennis team were honored by the Little East Conference for their standout
play during the week of April 16-22. Spann was named the LEC Player of the Week
and Warren was tabbed the conference's Rookie of the Week.
It is the second time this season that Spann has received Player of the
Week honors, and the fourth time that Warren has been selected as Rookie of the
Week.
Spann completed an undefeated week winning all three of his top-flight
singles and doubles matches as Southern Maine raised its overall record to 8-2
and completed the regular season with an unblemished 6-0 mark in conference
action. He defeated his two Little East Conference opponents in straight sets,
downing Matt Charest of Bridgewater State 6-4, 6-1, and Wayne Tentler of Western
Connecticut 6-4, 7-6 (5). Spann also had a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Daniel
Dworetsky of Mitchell College in a non-conference match.
Warren continued his success at no. 2 singles and no. 1 doubles finishing
the week undefeated. He earned a 6-0, 6-2 win over Western Connecticut's Matt
Fogel and a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Barry Gordon of Bridgewater State. Warren
also had a 6-0, 6-0, win over Sam Mahar of Mitchell.
Warren and Spann teamed to post a 3-0 mark in doubles competition,
including a key 8-6 win over Bridgewater State's no. 1 doubles team to help USM
to a 9-0 sweep of the Bears.
Southern Maine returns to action on Friday and Saturday (April 27-28) at
the 2007 Little East Conference men's tennis championships hosted by Rhode

Southern Maine Defeats Western Connecticut 7-2
DANBURY, Conn. -- Senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) pulled
out a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win at no. 1 singles to help the University of Southern Maine
Huskies earn a 7-2 win over the Western Connecticut State University Colonials
in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday in Danbury, Conn.
Spann defeated WCSU junior Wayne Tentler (Johannesburg, South Africa) as
Southern Maine completed its regular season schedule undefeated in the LEC with
a 6-0 record. Earning their sixth consecutive win, the Huskies improve to 8-2
overall. Western Connecticut drops to 4-3 overall and 2-3 in conference action
with the loss.
Southern Maine won five of its six singles matches, and claimed two of the
available doubles points in the win. Freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine)
downed Western Connecticut sophomore Matt Fogel (Westport, Conn.) 6-0, 6-2 at
no. 2 singles, and teamed with Spann to take a solid 8-4 win at first doubles.

Southern Maine Rolls Over Mitchell 9-0
GORHAM, Maine - The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team
yielded just three games en route to a dominating 9-0 non-conference win over
the Mitchell College Pequots Friday afternoon in New London, Conn.
Earning its fifth consecutive win, Southern Maine improves to 7-2 overall.
The Pequots drop to 1-4 with the loss.
Seniors Justin and Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) posted
6-0, 6-0 victories over Mitchell's Christopher White and Justin Curtis in third
and fourth singles, respectively. Competing at no. 2 singles, freshman Josh
Warren (Hermon, Maine) continued to roll, earning a 6-0, 6-0 win against the
Pequot's Sam Mahar. Freshman Ian Carey (Milo, Maine) posted his second
consecutive win at no. 6 singles for USM, downing Mitchell's Chris Brown 6-0,
6-0. Sophomore Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine) took a 6-0, 6-0 win at fifth

Southern Maine Downs Bridgewater State 9-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior captain Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow)
and freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) combined for a key doubles win and a
pair of singles victories to propel the University of Southern Maine Huskies to
a 9-0 triumph over the Bridgewater State College Bears in a Little East
Conference men's tennis match Wednesday at the USM Field House in Gorham.
With its fourth consecutive win, Southern Maine improves to 6-2 overall and
5-0 in the LEC. Suffering its first loss of the season, Bridgewater State dips
to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in conference action. The match was the first meeting
between the two teams that tied for the conference championship last spring.
Spann and Warren earned a hard-fought, 8-6 win over BSC senior Matt Kelly
(Hopedale, Mass.) and sophomore Matt Charest (Somerset, Mass.) as USM opened the
match sweeping the three doubles points.
In singles action, Spann took a decisive 6-4, 6-1 straight set win over
Charest at no. 1 singles, and Warren posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Gorman in
the no. 2 singles spot.
Sophomore Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham) and senior Chris Chaffee
(Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) posted an 8-1 win at no. 2 doubles against

Josh Warren Named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) of the University
of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team has been named the Little East
Conference Rookie of the Week for the third time this season. The announcement
was made by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Playing at no. 2 singles, Warren continued to have success winning both of
his singles matches to help Southern Maine to a 2-0 week against Little East
Conference opponents. Warren dominated Rob Thomas of Salem State College, 6-0,
6-0, and downed Tauquir Puthawala of Rhode Island College, in straight sets,
6-2, 6-0.
Warren teamed with senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) at no. 1
doubles to post a 2-0 record during the week. Earning a decisive 8-2 win over
Salem State's no. 1 doubles team, Warren and Spann secured the Huskies lone
doubles point with an 8-2 win over Rhode Island College's first doubles
combination.
For the spring season, Warren has compiled a 5-2 record in singles play and
combined with Spann to fashion a 5-2 record at no. 1 doubles.
Southern Maine is undefeated in the Little East Conference with a 4-0
record and is 5-2 overall. The Huskies will host Bridgewater State College on
Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) in a Little East Conference match. Both teams enter the
match undefeated in conference play. Bridgewater State and Southern Maine
shared the Little East Conference championship crown in 2006.

Southern Maine Downs Rhode Island College 6-3
PROVIDENCE -- Senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) and freshman
Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine/Hermon Academy) each posted a pair of wins to lead
the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 6-3 victory over the Rhode Island
College Anchormen in a Little East Conference men's tennis match Saturday
afternoon in Providence.
The win improves Southern Maine's record to 5-2 overall and keeps the
Huskies undefeated in conference action at 4-0. With the loss, Rhode Island
College slides to 4-5 overall and 2-1 in the LEC.
Spann earned a 6-4, 6-1, win over senior Barry Manfredi (Westerly, R.I.) at
no. 1 singles, and Warren picked up a 6-2, 6-0 victory over senior Tauquir
Puthawala (Lincoln, R.I.) at no. 2 singles. Spann and Warren teamed to score
Southern Maine's lone point in the doubles matches, defeating Puthawal and
freshman Jawad Sefiani (Pawtucket, R.I.) 8-2 in no. 1 doubles.
The Huskies other three points came on straight sets singles victories by
seniors Justin and Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and
sophomore Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine/Windham).
Southern Maine returns to action at home on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.) against
Little East Conference opponent Bridgewater State College. Rhode Island College
plays again on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth
for an LEC match.

USM-Thomas Tennis Match Postponed

Southern Maine Slams Salem State 9-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) and freshman Josh
Warren (Hermon, Maine) each cruised to 6-0, 6-0, straight-set wins in their
respective singles matches Tuesday afternoon to lead the University of Southern
Maine Huskies to a 9-0 Little East Conference win over the Salem State College
Vikings in men's tennis action at the USM Field House.
Earning their second straight win, Southern Maine improves to 4-2 overall
and remains undefeated in the Little East with a 3-0 mark. Salem State dips to
2-5 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Chaffee downed Salem State's Eric Goldberg (Saugus, Mass.) at no. 4
singles, and paired with sophomore Derek Stevenson (Raymond, Maine) at no. 2
doubles to earn a decisive 8-1 victory the Vikings' Goldberg and Kyle Watson
(Saugus, Mass.).
Warren, recently named the LEC Rookie of the Week for the second
consecutive week, earned his fourth win at no. 2 singles downing Salem State's
Rob Thomas (Saugus, Mass.). Warren matched his success in singles action at no.
1 doubles in tandem with senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn.). Spann and Warren
worked their way to an 8-2 win over Salem State's Adrien Malosse (Treil Sur
Seine, France) and Jim Lozzi (Topfield, Mass.).
Spann also fared well for the Huskies at no. 1 singles, charging back from
a set down to defeat Malosse 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (3:30 p.m.) in Waterville,
Maine, for a non-conference match against Thomas College. Salem State travels
to Newbury College for its next match on Friday (4:00 p.m.).

Spann and Warren Earn LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn.) and freshman Josh
Warren (Hermon, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis
team have been awarded Little East Conference weekly honors for the week ending
April 8, 2007. Spann was named the LEC Player of the Week, while Warren was
selected as the conference's Rookie of the Week.
Southern Maine finished the week 2-1, including a 9-0 win over the
University of Massachusetts Boston in conference action.
Spann earned Player of the Week honors for the first time this season
posting a pair of convincing wins at no. 1 singles. Spann overpowered Alexis
Roux from UMass Boston, 6-1, 6-3, and Josh Schoen of Endicott College, 6-0, 6-3,
for his two victories. His one loss was against Brody Saunders of Colby College
in a super tie-breaker, 7-6, 2-6 (6-10).
Spann and Warren also lead the Huskies in doubles play. At no. 1 doubles,
the duo finished 2-1, defeating the top teams from UMass Boston and Endicott.
Warren, earning rookie of the week honors for the second consecutive week,
battled his way to a pair of singles victories during the week. Playing at no.
2 singles, Warren posted a 7-5, 7-5 victory against Dan Murray of Endicott,
while winning a second-set tie breaker to defeat Paul Braude of UMass Boston,
6-4, 7-6 (7-2).
Southern Maine, currently 4-2 overall and 3-0 in the Little East
Conference, faces non-conference opponent Thomas College on Thursday (3:30 p.m.)
in Waterville, Maine.

Southern Maine Blanks UMass Boston 9-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Joshua Warren (Hermon, Maine) won a second set
tiebreaker to earn a straight sets win at no. 2 singles to help the University
of Southern Maine Huskies to a 9-0 Little East Conference victory over the
University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons Saturday afternoon at the USM Field
House.
With the win, Southern Maine improves to 3-2 overall and remains undefeated
in the conference at 2-0. UMass Boston drops to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the LEC.
Warren defeated Beacon sophomore Paul Braude (West Yarmouth, Mass.) at no.
2 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (2), and teamed with senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn.) to
earn a decisive 8-0 win at no. 1 doubles. Spann and Warren defeated the UMass
Boston tandem of sophomore Daniel Bueno (Curitiba, Brazil) and senior Alexis
Roux (Beirut, Lebanon). USM's Spann continued his solid play at no. 1 singles,
defeating Roux 6-1, 6-3.
Senior Justin Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) and sophomore Derek Stevenson
(Raymond, Maine) each took 6-0, 6-0 straight set victories in singles. Chaffee
downed Bueno at no. 3 singles, while Stevenson defeated UMass Boston sophomore

Colby Blanks Southern Maine 7-0
GORHAM, Maine -- Colby College junior Brody Saunders (Park City, Utah)
won a super tiebreaker to earn a hard-fought victory at no. 1 singles en route
to the Mules posting a 7-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in
a non-conference men's tennis match Wednesday at the USM Field House in Gorham,
Maine.
Saunders defeated senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) 10-6 in
the super tiebreaker after the two split sets. Spann took the opening set in a
tiebreaker, 7-6, and Saunders took the second set 6-2.
Saunders was a double winner teaming with classmate Zach Schuman (Watchung,
N.J.) to earn an 8-6 win at no. 1 doubles over Spann and freshman Josh Warren
(Hermon, Maine). Schuman also posted a straight sets win over Warren in the no.
2 singles match.
The Mules snapped a three-match losing streak and improved to 4-3 overall.
The loss halted a two-match win streak for the Huskies and evens out their
record at 2-2.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) when it hosts the
University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference match. Colby
plays again on Saturday (9:00 a.m.) when it hosts NESCAC rival Wesleyan

Josh Warren Named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week

doubles to dispatched Chris Sims and Forster 8-5. USM went on to an 8-1 Little
East Conference victory over the Corsairs.

Southern Maine Defeats Endicott 7-2
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis
team won five of their six single matches and took two of the three available
doubles points to defeat the Endicott College Gulls 7-2 in a non-conference
match Monday night at the USM Field House in Gorham, Maine.
Freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) grinded his way to a 7-5, 7-5 win at
no. 2 singles, defeating Gulls' freshman Dan Murray (Marlboro, Conn.) to help
Southern Maine to its second straight win and improve to 2-1 overall. The loss
snapped Endicott's two-match win streak and dropped the Gulls to 4-5 overall.
Warren teamed with senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn.) to earn a decisive
8-1 win at the no. 1 doubles spot. Warren and Spann downed Endicott's Murray
and sophomore Josh Schoen (Phoenix, Ariz.). Spann downed Schoen in the no. 1
singles match, 6-0, 6-3.
USM senior Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) and sophomore Derek Stevenson
(Raymond, Maine) were also double winners for the Huskies. Chaffee earned a
6-0, 6-0 win over Endicott sophomore Scott Teller (Granville, N.Y.) at fourth
singles, while Stevenson downed Gull sophomore Marc Maloney (Feeding Hills,
Mass.) 6-1, 6-0 in fifth singles. Chaffee and Stevenson paired together for an
8-5 win over Teller and Nemanja Marinkovic (Belgrade, Serbia) in no. 2 doubles.

(4:00 p.m.). Endicott hosts Nichols College on Wednesday (3:30 p.m.).

Southern Maine Downs UMass Dartmouth 8-1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior Craig Spann (Redding, Conn.) earned a
6-0, 6-0 victory in the no. 1 singles spot to lead the University of Southern
Maine Huskies to an 8-1 Little East Conference men's tennis win over the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs Saturday afternoon at the UMass
Dartmouth Athletic Complex.
Spann defeated senior Chris Sims (Chelmsford, Mass.) to help the Huskies
win five of the six singles matches to improve their record to 1-1 overall and
1-0 in the Little East. The match was the first of the spring season for UMass
Dartmouth.
Spann teamed with freshman Josh Warren (Hermon, Maine) to earn a hard-
fought, 8-5 win at no. 1 doubles over Sims and sophomore Chris Forster (Reading,
Mass.). Warren, playing in the no. 2 singles spot, earned his first collegiate
win with a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Forster.
Others earning two points for the Huskies include seniors Chris and Justin
Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine). The two teamed for a 9-7 win at number doubles.
Justin Chaffee then posted a straight sets win over junior Eric Dusseault
(Taunton, Mass.) at no. 3 singles, and Chris Chaffee had a two-set win over
senior Josh McCoy (Newburyport, Mass.) at no. 4 singles. Sophomore Derek
Stevenson (Raymond, Maine) had a straight sets win over freshman Ken Sims
(Chelmsford, Mass.) at no. 5 singles, and combined with freshman Ian Carey
(Milo, Maine) to earn an 8-4 win at no. 3 doubles.
Southern Maine returns to action on Monday (April 2) at 3:30 p.m. when it
host non-conference opponent Endicott College. UMass Dartmouth plays again on
Monday at home against Eastern Nazarene College at 3:30 p.m.
