                     Huskies Win Little East Conference Title

     DANBURY, Conn.  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis 
team captured its second Little East Conference championship in the past three 
years Saturday by winning five of the nine flight championships.
     The Huskies, the LEC regular season champion with a perfect 6-0 mark, won 
titles at number three doubles and swept the number three through six singles 
crowns to overcome a one-point deficit after first day of play Friday to take the 
team title with 20 points.  Western Connecticut State University, the host 
institution for the tournament, was second with 16 points and three flight 
championships.  The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, which won the final 
flight title, was third with 11 points.
     Leading the Huskies were the number three doubles combination of freshman 
Mike Burke (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Jason Ouellette (Levant, Maine/Hermon).  
The two won the number three doubles crown by defeating Tim Hamilton and Jonas 
Shorrock of UMass Dartmouth in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
     Burke returned later to win the number four singles flight with a 6-2, 6-3 
victory over Henry Ryerson of Western Connecticut.  Ouellette won the number six 
singles title posting a 6-4, 7-5 triumph over John McCoy of UMass Dartmouth.
     The Chaffee brothers, Justin and Chris (Fryeburg, Maine), also brought home 
singles titles for the Huskies.  Justin prevailed in straight sets over Julio 
Andrade of Rhode Island College, 6-2, 6-1, to take the number three flight while 
Chris defeated Mat Guzzetti of Salem State College, 6-3, 6-2 to win the number 
flve flight.
     USM's number one doubles combination of junior Matt Filteau (Waterville, 
Maine) and sophomore Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Bartow) reached the finals 
before losing a hard-fought 6-3, 7-5 decision to Western Connecticut's Matt Cusack 
and Aaron Ribchinski.  Cusack and Rubchinski also won the number one and two 
singles titles respectively.

            USM's Mike Burke Named LEC Men's Tennis Rookie of the Week

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Freshman Mike Burke (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of 
Southern Maine men's tennis team has been named the Little East Conference Rookie 
of the Week for his play during the week of April 25 through May 1.  The weekly 
awards were announced Monday afternoon by the conference media relations office.
     This is the second time this spring season that Burke has been named the LEC 
rookie of the Week.  Burke was previously named the conference Rookie of the Week 
for the week of April 11-17.  This is the third straight week that a USM player 
has received either the Player of the Week or the Rookie of the Week award
     Burke helped the Huskies clinch the LEC regular season championship Sunday 
with a pair of wins against Western Connecticut State University.  USM downed 
Western Connecticut 7-2 to win its second LEC regular season title.
     At Western Conn., Burke defeated Colin Robertson at number four singles, 6-3, 
6-2, and teamed up with junior Jason Ouellette (Levant, Maine/Hermon) to post a 
9-7 win over Colin and Forest Robertson at number three doubles.
     In the Huskies' 4-3 loss against Green Mountain College on Saturday, Burke 
and Ouellette combined to down Nicolas Bourges and Joe Bossen, 8-5, at number 
three doubles.  Burke dropped a tough, two-set match, 6-4, 6-2, to Blake Bernard 
at number four singles.
     For the spring season, Burke has compiled a 5-3 record in singles play and 
has combined with Ouellette to post a 7-2 mark in doubles.
     The Huskies, 6-4 overall and a perfect 6-0 in Little East play, will travel 
to Danbury, Conn., this Friday and Saturday (May 6-7) for the Little East 
Conference Men's Tennis Championships Tournament.

     Southern Maine Downs Western Connecticut to Win LEC Regular Season Title

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies won four singles 
matches and swept the three doubles matches en route to a 7-2 victory over the 
Western Connecticut State University Colonials in a Little East Conference men's 
tennis match played Sunday afternoon in Danbury, Conn.
     The victory gave the Huskies a perfect 6-0 in conference play and the regular 
season championship.  USM is 6-4 overall this spring.  Western Connecticut, which 
will be the host institution for next weekend's LEC Men's Tennis Championship 
Tournament, slips to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play.
     Leading the Huskies were the Chaffee twins, sophomores Justin and Chris 
(Fryeburg, Maine), freshman Mike Burke (Lewiston, Maine) and junior Jason 
Ouellette (Levant, Maine/ Hermon).  Each posted a win in singles play. The 
Chaffees also posted a win at number two doubles, and Burke and Ouellette combine 
to win at number three doubles.
     The other USM point was earned by the doubles tandem of junior Matt Filteau 
(Waterville, Maine) and sophomore Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Bartow).
     The Colonials only points came on singles victories by junior Matt Cusack 
(New Milford, Conn.) and freshman Aaron Ribchinsky (Essex, Conn.).

                     Green Mountain Defeats Southern Maine 4-3

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Senior Blake Bernard (Kalamazoo, Mich.) and sophomore 
Thibaut Huens (Valentine, Australia) posted a pair of wins to lead Green Mountain 
College by the University of Southern Maine Huskies 4-3 in a non-conference men's 
tennis match Saturday afternoon at the USM Field House.
     Bernard combined with sophomore Ryan Cassidy (Rutland, Vt.) to post an 8-5 
win at number one doubles while Huens teamed with senior Will Biddle (Bristol, 
England) for an 8-5 win at number two doubles.  Green Mountain, by virtue of 
winning two of the three doubles matches, picked up the first point of the match.
     Bernard came back in singles to defeat freshman Mike Burke (Lewiston, Maine), 
6-4, 6-2, at number four.  Huens downed sophomore Justin Chaffee (Fryeburg, 
Maine), 6-4, 6-2, at number three.  Sophomore Nicolas Bourges (Salta, Argentina) 
knocked off junior Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine) at number one, 6-4, 6-4, for 
the decisive point.
     Posting singles wins for the Huskies were sophomore Craig Spann (Redding, 
Conn./Joel Barlow) at number two, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1, over Cassidy;  sophomore Chris 
Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) at number five, 6-2, 6-4, over Biddle;  and junior Jason 
Ouellette (Levant, Maine/Hermon) over freshman Joe Bossen (Riverton, N.J.) at 
number six, 6-1, 6-1.
     The Huskies (5-4) travel to Danbury, Conn., tomorrow (Sunday, May 1) for a 
make-up Little East Conference match against Western Connecticut State University.  
The match gets underway at 1:00 p.m.

                          USM Athletic Schedule Changes

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Athletic Department 
announced the following athletics schedule changes for today (Wednesday, April 27) 
due to the inclement weather in the region.
     The baseball game with Bates College has been postponed.  No make-up date was 
announced.
     The women's lacrosse match with Thomas College has been postponed and will 
not be rescheduled.
     It was also announced that the men's tennis match with Thomas College, set 
for Saturday, April 30, has been cancelled.  Southern Maine will host Green 
Mountain College on Saturday starting at 11:30 a.m.  Following the match, the 
Huskies will travel to Danbury, Conn., to play Western Connecticut State 
University in a rescheduled Little East Conference match on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

                          Bates Drops Southern Maine 7-0

     LEWISTON, Maine.  --  Junior William Boe-Wiegaard (Georgetown, Conn./Joel 
Barlow) earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at first singles and teamed with senior captain Sam 
Duvall (Mt. Washington, KY) for an 8-2 victory in first doubles to lead the Bates 
College Bobcats to a 7-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a 
non-conference men's tennis match Tuesday afternoon in Lewiston, Maine.  
     Boe-Wiegaard defeated junior Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) 6-4, 
6-0 to lead the Bobcats to their fifth straight victory.  With the win Bates 
improves to 11-3 on the season, while the Huskies drop just their third match of 
the season to stand at 5-3 overall.  
     Bates claimed each of the doubles positions and continued its sweep through 
the singles to earn the 7-0 win.  Bobcat sophomore Greg Little (Hampton, N.H./St. 
Thomas Aquinas) earned a hard-fought 6-4, 6-4 decision in third singles over 
Southern Maine freshman Mike Burke (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) to preserve the 
sweep for Bates.  Little also aided the Bobcats in the third doubles position, 
along with freshman Josh Feinberg (The Woodlands, Texas/Woodlands), picking up an 
8-2 win over the Huskies' Jason Ouellette (Levant, Maine/Hermon) and Mike King 
(Augusta, Maine/Cony).
     Southern Maine returns to the courts Saturday, April 30 at home against Green 
Mountain College at 8:30 a.m. and Thomas College at 12:30 p.m.  Bates plays again 
tomorrow, Wednesday, April 27, at home against NESCAC rival Bowdoin College.  
First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.

       Filteau Named Little East Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week

     GORHAM, Maine.  -- Junior Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) of the 
University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team has been named the Little 
East Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of April 18-24, 2005.  
This is the second straight week that a member of the Southern Maine tennis team 
has earned LEC weekly honors.  
     Filteau joins teammates Mike Burke (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) and Craig Spann 
(Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) as members of the USM tennis team that have been 
recognized for their outstanding play by the conference.  Burke and Spann earned 
Rookie and Player of the Week honors, respectively, last week. 
     Filteau claimed player of the week honors after helping the Huskies remain 
undefeated in conference play as he went 4-0 last week.  He posted straight-set 
victories at number one singles against Matt Kelly of Bridgewater State College 
and Aidan Thompson of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.  Filteau also 
teamed with Spann to win two matches at number one doubles.  USM defeated 
Bridgewater State 9-0 and UMass Dartmouth 8-1.
     For the 2005 spring season, Filteau, who won the LEC number #3 flight singles 
title last spring and the #4 singles title in 2003, is 4-3 overall in singles play 
and 5-2 with Spann in doubles.
     Southern Maine is currently 5-0 in the conference and 5-2 overall.  The 
Huskies return to action Tuesday, April 26, on the road against Bates College in 
Lewiston, Maine.  The match is slated for 4:00 p.m.

              Huskies Stay Perfect in LEC, Defeat UMass Dartmouth 8-1

     NEW BEDFORD, Mass.  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies swept the 
six singles matches and took two out of three doubles flights en route to a 
convincing 8-1 win over the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs in a 
Little East Conference men's tennis match played Friday at Buttonwood Park in New 
Bedford, Mass.
     The win keeps the Huskies spotless in LEC play at 5-0, and 5-2 overall.  
UMass Dartmouth, the defending LEC champion, slipped to 2-7 overall and 1-4 in the 
conference.
     Picking up two wins each for the Huskies were junior Matt Filteau 
(Waterville, Maine), sophomore Craig Spann (Redding, Conn.), freshman Mike Burke

     Filteau won in straight sets at number one, defeating junior Aidan Thompson 
(Middleboro, Mass.), 6-1, 6-2.  Spann dispatched with sophomore Chris Sims 
(Chelmsford, Mass.) in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0.  Filteau and Spann combined to win 
the number one doubles flight over Thompson and senior Ryan Paul (Fall River, 
Mass.), 8-4.
     Burke won his match at number four over freshman Tim Hamilton (Ashburnham, 
Mass.), 6-3, 6-0.  Ouellette did not lose a game in defeating freshman Steffan 
Nunn (Swanzey, N.H.) at number six.  Burke and Ouellette paired to win at number 
three doubles, 8-0, over Hamilton and freshman Steve Locke (Byfield, Mass.).
     Sophomore twin brothers Justin and Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) won their 
respective singles matches at number three and five for the Huskies.
     Sims and sophomore Josh McCoy (Newburyport, Mass.) picked up the Corsairs' 
only point with a win at number two doubles, 8-4, over the Chaffees.
     The Huskies match with Western Connecticut State University, scheduled for 
Saturday, has been moved to Sunday, May 1, due to the inclement weather expected 
to blanket the new England area this weekend.  USM will play next at Bates College 
on Tuesday.  UMass Dartmouth is slated to host Newbury College on Saturday, 
weather permitting.

          Southern Maine, Western Conn. Men's Tennis Match Moved to May 1

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Due to the inclement weather expected this weekend 
throughout the New England region, the Little East Conference men's tennis match 
between the University of Southern Maine and Western Connecticut State University 
has been moved to Sunday, May 1.
     The match will be played in Danbury, Conn., on that date starting at 1:00 
p.m.
     Attempts are being made to reschedule the match with Green Mountain College 
that was scheduled for May 1.

                   Southern Maine Blanks Bridgewater State 9-0

     GORHAM, Maine  - The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team 
remained undefeated in Little East Conference action earning a 9-0 win over the 
Bridgewater State College Bears Wednesday afternoon in Gorham.  
     With the win Southern Maine improves to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in the Little 
East, while the Bears drop to 2-6  and 2-2 in conference action.
     Junior Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) and sophomore Craig Spann 
(Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) each picked up two wins for the Huskies.  Filteau and 
Spann teamed to defeat Bridgewater State's Matt Kelly (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton) 
and Jeff Heath (Tiverton, R.I./Tiverton) 8-1 in first doubles and then went on to 
win their respective singles match.  Filteau defeated Kelly in straight sets 6-1, 
6-0 at first singles and Spann downed Heath 6-1, 6-2 in second singles.  
     The Huskies return to action Saturday, April 23 on the road against the 
Western Connecticut State Colonials.  First serve is slated for 12 p.m.

                 Spann, Burke Earn LEC Men's Tennis Weekly Honors

     GORHAM, Maine  --  Sophomore Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) was 
named the Little East Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week and freshman Mike 
Burke (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) was named the conference's Rookie of the Week as 
the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team swept the LEC weekly 
honors for the week of April 11-17.  
     In a pair of Little East Conference matches, Spann finished the week with a 
perfect 4-0 mark.  He posted a pair of straight-set victories at number two 
singles and two wins at number one doubles with junior partner Matt Filtaeu 
(Waterville, Maine).  Spann's victories helped Southern Maine defeat Salem State 
(9-0) and Rhode Island College (6-3) to improve the Huskies' conference record to 
3-0 on the season. 
     Burke compiled a record of 3-1 in the Huskies' two matches of the week.  He 
had a pair of straight-set victories at the number four singles flight, while 
splitting a pair of matches at the number three doubles position. 
     Southern Maine, riding a three-match win streak, is currently 3-1 overall 
this spring.  Spann, Burke and the Huskies return to action at home Wednesday, 
April 20, against LEC opponent Bridgewater State college.  First serve is 
scheduled for 3 p.m.

     BRUNSWICK, Maine - The 15th-ranked Bowdoin College men's tennis team improved 
to 9-4 with a 7-0 sweep of the University of Southern Maine on Monday in 
Brunswick. The Huskies fall to 3-2 this spring.

                  Southern Maine Downs Rhode Island College, 6-3

     PROVIDENCE, R.I.  --  Sophomores Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Bartow) and 
Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) each posted a pair of victories to lead the 
University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 6-3 win over the Rhode Island College 
Anchormen in a Little East Conference played Saturday afternoon in Providence.
     The win was the third straight for the Huskies who improve to 3-1 overall and 
3-0 in the LEC this spring.  Rhode Island College drops to 3-6 overall and 1-1 in 
the conference.
     Spann picked up a win at number two singles by defeating Richard Truchon, 
6-1, 6-2, and combined with junior Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine) to post an 8-4 
win at first doubles.
     Chaffee picked up a straight sets win over Tom Lapierre, 6-3, 6-2, at number 
five singles, and paired up with his twin brother Justin for an 8-4 win at number 
two doubles.
     Other winners for the Huskies were freshman Mike Burke (Lewiston, Maine) at 
number four singles and junior Jason Ouellette (Levant, Maine/Hermon) at number 
six singles.  Burke defeated Elliott LeFaiver, 6-0, 6-0, while Ouellette 
dispatched with Lorne Teeter, 6-0, 6-2.
     The Huskies travel to Bowdoin College on Monday for their next match.  Rhode 
Island College travels to Western Connecticut State University tomorrow for an LEC 
match.

                      Southern Maine Blanks Salem State 9-0

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team 
blanked the Salem State College Vikings 9-0 in a Little East Conference men's 
tennis match Wednesday afternoon in Gorham. 
     The Huskies swept all nine points for their second consecutive 9-0 victory, 
and improved to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in the LEC.  Salem State, with the loss, drops 
to 2-4 overall and 0-2 in conference action. 
     Junior Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine/Waterville) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over 
Salem State's Eric Goldberg in first singles to lead the Huskies as Southern Maine 
won four of its six singles matches by the score of 6-1, 6-1.  Filteau also teamed 
with sophomore Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow) in first doubles to take 
an 8-1 win over the Vikings' Brian Carlson and Mat Guzzetti.
     Southern Maine freshman Mike Burke (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) improved his 
overall record to a 5-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Salem State's Sam Valeimond in 
singles, and paired with junior Jason Ouellette (Levant, Maine/Hermon) to earn a 
8-1 win in third doubles for the Huskies.  
      Southern Maine tennis return to action on the road Saturday, April 16, at 
Rhode Island College for a Little East Conference match.

                     Southern Maine Hammers UMass Boston 9-0

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team 
blanked the UMass Boston Beacons 9-0 in a Little East Conference tennis match 
Saturday in Gorham. 
     The Huskies swept the first and second doubles flights and earned convincing 
victories in the first, second, third and fifth singles en route to their first 
win of the spring season.  The Huskies are now 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the Little 
East.  UMass Boston, playing in its third match of the spring, drops below .500 
with a 1-2 overall mark and a 0-1 record in conference action. 
     Junior Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine) and sophomore Chris Spann (Redding, 
Conn./Joel Barlow) combined to defeat the Beacons' Dat Nguyen (Dorchester, 
Mass./John D. O'Brynat) and Glenn Schleehauf (Milton, Mass.) 8-4 in first doubles, 
and then each earned straight set wins at first and second singles to lead the 
Huskies. 
     In first singles Filteau downed Nguyen 6-3, 6-2 while Spann earned a 6-1, 6-1 
win over UMass Boston's Chris Curtin (Ocala, Fla./Vanguard) in second singles.  
USM sophomore Justin Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) dominated UMass 
Boston's Emilio Vallejo (Somerville, Mass./Charlestown) en route to a 6-0, 6-0 win 
in third singles. 
     Southern Maine tennis return to action Wednesday, April 13, at 3:00 p.m. with 
a home match against Salem State College.

                      Men's Tennis Schedule Changes Announced

     GORHAM, Maine  --  The Athletic Department at the University of Southern 
Maine announced two changes to the men's tennis spring schedule today.  
     The match with the Bowdoin College "B" team has been moved from Tuesday, 
April 12, to Monday, April 18.  That match will be played at Bowdoin starting at 
4:00 p.m.
     The match with UMass Dartmouth on April 2 that was postponed due to weather 
has been rescheduled for Friday, April 22, at UMass Dartmouth.  The match will 
start at 2:00 p.m.

                     COLBY MEN'S TENNIS DEFEATS SOUTHERN MAINE

     WATERVILLE, Maine --- The Colby College men's tennis team received a win at 
first singles from senior John Fallon (Northboro, Mass.) in taking a 5-2 victory 
over University of Southern Maine on Wednesday.
     First-year Zachary Schuman (Watchung, N.J.), junior Ben Crane (Edina, Minn.) 
and sophomore James Cryan (Pittsburgh, Pa.) also won singles matches for Colby, 
now 2-1 this spring.  Fallon and Crane joined forces for a win at first doubles, 
while sophomore Tony Gill (Deerfield, Ill.) and Schuman won their match at second 
doubles.
     Southern Maine received singles wins from first-year Mike Burke (Lewiston, 
Maine) and sophomore Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine).  Burke and junior Jason 
Ouellette (Levant, Maine/Hermon HS) pick up a win at third doubles.  This was the 
Huskies' first match of the spring season.
