Huskies Win Three Flights, Finish Second at LEC Championships
PORTLAND, Maine -- Sophomore Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine) and freshman
Craig Spann (Redding, Conn.) captured individual titles and the freshman duo of
Justin and Chris Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) brought home a doubles title as the
University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team finished second at the
annual Little East Conference Championships Tournament played Friday and Saturday
at the Deering Oaks courts in Portland, Maine.
Filteau brought home the gold at number three singles by defeating Brendon
Bowers of the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 6-3, 7-5. The singles title
was the second of his USM career. He won the number four flight a year ago.
Spann collected the title at number five singles by taking a straight sets
victory over Colin Robertson of Western Connecticut State University, 6-1, 6-2.
The Chaffee brothers swept past Aidan Thompson & Ryan Paul of UMass
Dartmouth, 6-3, 6-3, to take the number three doubles flight.
Chris Chaffee also reached the finals at number four singles before dropping
a tough 7-5, 6-4 match to Chris Sims of UMass Dartmouth.
UMass Dartmouth took home the team trophy by garnering 18 points in the
tournament. The title was the Corsairs' eighth in the last nine years. Southern
Maine, the defending champion, was next with 14.5 points, followed by Western
Connecticut State University with 13.5 points, the University of Massachusetts
Boston with 8.5 points and Rhode island College and Salem State College each with
5.5 points.

Craig Spann Named LEC Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Craig Spann (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow HS) of
the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis team has been named the
Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week of April 26 through May 2.
The announcement of the weekly awards was made by the conference office on Monday.
Spann is the second USM player to receive Rookie of the Week honors this
spring. Classmate Justin Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) has received
the honor on two previous occasions.
In matches against powerhouse Bates College and conference rival, the
University of Massachusetts Boston, Spann compiled a 3-1 record. Against Bates,
he combined with senior Boonthai Singcharern (Lewiston, Maine) for an 8-5 win over
the duo of Blake Waymon and Tristan Beach at number one doubles. In singles play,
he dropped a three-set match to Greg Little, 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. Bates defeated the
Huskies 7-0.
Against LEC rival UMass Boston, Spann combined with sophomore Matt Filteau
(Waterville, Maine) to post an 8-1 win over Emilio Vallejo and Jay Lee at number
two doubles. Spann returned to the court to face Lee at number five singles and
win in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. USM won the match 7-2.
On the season, Spann has compiled a 13-4 record in singles play and an 11-6
record with three partners in doubles.
The Huskies return to action this Friday and Saturday when they compete in
the Little East Conference Championships. Southern Maine will be the host
institution. All matches, weather permitting, will be played at the Deering Oaks
courts in Portland, Maine. First round play on Friday begins at 12:00 p.m., and
Saturday's play starts at 9:00 a.m. USM is the defending team champion.

Justin Chaffee Named LEC Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Justin Chaffee (Fryeburg, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine men's tennis team has been named the Little East
Conference Rookie of the Week for his outstanding play the week of April 12-18.
The announcement was made by the conference office Monday.
This the second time this spring that Chaffee has been named the LEC Rookie
of the Week. He also won the award for the week of March 29 through April 4.
Chaffee posted a perfect 4-0 record last week, winning a pair of singles
matches and two doubles matches. Playing at number one in singles, he defeated
John Indrisano of Bridgewater State College, 6-1, 6-2, on Friday (April 16), then
came back on Saturday (April 17) in an LEC match to beat Tauquir Puthawala of
Rhode Island College, 6-0, 6-1, at number two singles.
In doubles play, he combined with his twin brother Chris to defeat Takahiro
Kobayashi and Ryan Mackiewicz of Bridgewater State, 8-4, at number two doubles.
On Saturday, he combined with sophomore Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine) to knock
off Chris Furey and Jay LaDuke of Rhode Island College, 8-1, at number two
doubles.
On the season, Chaffee has posted an 8-5 singles record playing primarily at
number two or number four. He has combined with three different partners for a 6-
7 mark in doubles action.
Southern Maine is 8-5 on the spring season and 3-0 in the Little East
Conference. The Huskies return to action Tuesday (April 20) when they host Thomas
College for a 3:00 p.m. match. That match had originally been scheduled to be
played at Thomas, but was moved to USM.

Singcharern, Urbanak Named USM Tennis Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Boonthai Singcharern (Lewiston, Maine) and junior
Andy Urbanak (Cornwall, Vt./Middlebury Union HS) have been named captains for the
2004 University of Southern Maine men's tennis team. Veteran head coach Phil Cole
made the announcement prior to the team traveling to Hilton Head, S.C., for their
season-opening, eight-match southern trip.
The Huskies, 2-4 heading into Friday's matches with Colby College and
Franklin College, open the northern portion of their 2004 schedule Tuesday (March
30) when they travel to Beverly, Mass., to play at Endicott College.
Singcharern, who shared the captain's duties last spring with Kendon Warren,
was 8-3 at number one singles during the 2003 campaign. He teamed with Urbanak to
go 8-3 at number one doubles. Coming into the 2004 spring season, Singcharern had
compiled an 18-14 career record in singles and a 20-14 mark in doubles play.
Urbanak was the Little East Conference champion at number three singles and
compiled an 8-3 singles record last season. A fixture in the Huskies' lineup
since his arrival, Urbanak has fashioned a 13-17 career record in singles play and
a 16-14 mark in doubles.
The pair helped the Huskies to a 7-2 record last spring and win the program's
first LEC team title in the 14-year history of the championship.
The remainder of the Huskies' 2004 schedule is as follows: April 3, at Salem
State (12:00 p.m.); April 10, at UMass Dartmouth (1:00 p.m.); April 13, at
Bridgewater State (3:30 p.m.); April 17, Rhode Island College (1:00 p.m.); April
20, at Thomas College (3:00 p.m.); April 24, at Western Connecticut State
University (12:00 p.m.); April 28, Bates (3:00 p.m.); and May 1, at UMass Boston
(1:00 p.m.).
The Huskies will be the host team for the 2004 Little East Conference
