USM Captures First Little East Conference Championship
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's tennis
team won three singles crowns and one doubles title Saturday to clinch the team's
first-ever Little East Conference championship in the 14 years of conference play.
The two-day tournament was hosted by Rhode Island College.
The Huskies brought home singles championships the number three, four and
five flights, and captured the number two doubles flight. Southern Maine
dethroned the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, the seven-time defending
champion, 12.5-11.5 points. The University of Massachusetts Boston came in third
in the four-team tourney with 7.5 points.
Sophomore Andy Urbanak (Cornwall, Vt.) took a straight sets win (6-0, 6-3)
over Brendan Bowers of UMass Dartmouth to take the number three flight. Freshman
Matt Filteau (Waterville, Maine) came from a set down to defeat Chris Curtin of
UMass Boston (4-6, 6-1, 6-2) to take the title in the number four flight. Senior
Kendon Warren (Millinocket, Maine) defeated Cole Morrison of UMass Boston in
straight sets (6-1, 6-2) at number five.
Filteau combined with fellow freshman Brian Willer (Lewiston, Maine) to
defeat Bowers and Chris Allen of UMass Dartmouth in straight sets (6-4, 6-3) for
the second doubles flight championship.
Other USM players to reach the championship match in singles were junior
Boonthai Singcharern (Lewiston, Maine) in the number one flight and Willer in the
number two flight. Reaching the doubles finals were Singcharern and Urbanak in
the first flight and Warren and sophomore Derek Bragdon (Millinocket, Maine) in
the third doubles flight.

USM's Kendon Warren, Brian Willer Receive LEC Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Kendon Warren (Millinocket, Maine) and freshman
Brian Willer (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men’s tennis
team have been selected by the Little East Conference as its Player of the Week
and Rookie of the Week, respectively, for the period of April 21-27. The
announcement was made by the conference office Monday afternoon.
This is the first time that Warren has received a weekly citation from the
Little East Conference. He is the second USM player, joining two-time honoree,
junior Boonthai Singcharern (Lewiston, Maine), to receive Player of the Week
honors this spring. This was the second Rookie of the Week citation for Willer
who previously won the honor April 14.
Warren and Willer helped the Huskies to a 3-0 week with impressive 5-1
records. USM defeated Bridgewater State College, 7-2, on Friday, then blanked
the University of Massachusetts Boston, 9-0, Sunday morning before knocking off
the defending LEC champion, the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 5-4 in
the afternoon.
Warren, playing number five singles, was unbeaten in singles play. He
defeated Takahiro Kobayashi of Bridgewater State, 7-6 (6), 6-4; Pat Merrill of
UMass Boston, 6-0, 6-4; and Patrick Martel of UMass Dartmouth, 6-4, 6-2. Warren
won the decisive point in the Huskies’ 5-4 victory over UMass Dartmouth. A team
co-captain, Warren combined with sophomore Derek Bragdon (Millinocket, Maine) to
post a 2-1 mark at number three doubles, including a thrilling 9-8 (6) win over
UMass Dartmouth.
Willer, at number two singles, knocked off John Indrisano of Bridgewater
State, 6-4, 6-4; Zoram Kaul of UMass Boston, 6-3, 6-4; and Dan Cohen of UMass
Dartmouth, 7-6 (8), 6-4). Along with freshman doubles partner Matt Filteau
(Waterville, Maine), he had a 2-1 mark in doubles.
The Huskies will finish their 2003 regular season on Wednesday (April 30)
playing at Bates College before participating in the Little East Conference
Championship Tournament this Friday and Saturday (May 2-3) at Rhode Island
College.

Southern Maine Reschedules Weekend Matches
GORHAM, Maine -- Due to the impending inclement weather forecast for
Saturday (April 26), the University of Southern Maine has rescheduled its two
men's tennis matches for this weekend.
Saturday's scheduled match with the University of Massachusetts Boston has
been moved to Sunday (April 27) morning at 11:00 a.m.
Sunday's makeup match with the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth has been
pushed back from 1:00 p.m. to a 2:30 p.m. start.
Both matches will be played at Gorham High School.

USM Sweeps Little East Conference Men’s Tennis Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Boonthai Singcharern (Lewiston, Maine) and
freshman Brian Willer (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine
Huskies men's tennis team swept the weekly Little East Conference awards for
their outstanding play during the week of April 7-13. The weekly awards were
announced Monday afternoon.
Singcharern was named the conference Player of the Week for the second
straight week after he swept his three singles and doubles matches. He opened
the week by defeating Andreas Gewitsch of Endicott College, 6-1, 6-0. He
followed that up by knocking off C.T. McLean of Salem State College, 6-2, 6-0,
and closed the week by posting a straight sets win (6-0, 6-0) over Andre LaBonte
of Rhode Island College. Singcharern combined with sophomore partner Andy
Urbanak (Cornwall, Vt.) to post three wins at number one doubles.
Willer was named the Rookie of the Week after posting three wins in
singles and three wins in doubles. He defeated Mariano Pagano of Endicott, 6-2,
6-2, Ryan Kelleher of Salem State, 6-1, 6-1, and Marc Pasonelli of Rhode Island
College, 6-2, 6-1. Willer combined with fellow freshman Matt Filteau
(Waterville, Maine) to post three wins at number two doubles.
Southern Maine defeated Endicott, 9-0; Salem State, 9-0; and LEC rival
Rhode Island College, 8-1, in its three matches to improve to 3-1 overall and
1-0 in the conference.
Singcharern is perfect on the season with 4-0 records at number one
singles and number one doubles with Urbanak. Willer is 3-1 at number two
singles and 3-1 with Filteau at number two doubles.
Southern Maine returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Thomas College
starting at 3:00 p.m. at the Gorham High School courts.
