Singcharern, Urbanak Take LEC Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine Huskies
men's tennis team picked up Little East Conference weekly awards for their
outstanding play during the week of April 8-14. Sophomore Boonthai Singcharern
(Lewiston, Maine) was named the LEC Player of the Week while freshman Andy
Urbanak (Cornwall, Vt./Middlebury Union HS) was selected as the Rookie of the
Week. The awards were announced by the conference office Monday evening.
Singcharern, the Huskies' number one singles player and one half of the
number one doubles combination, was unbeaten last week in seven matches. He was
3-0 in singles play (another match was halted due to darkness) and 4-0 in
doubles (3-0 with his primary partner Urbanak). This is the second time this
season that Singcharern has been picked as the Player of the Week.
Urbanak, the number three singles player and the other half of the top
doubles pair, was unbeaten in six matches, going 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in
doubles.
On the season, Singcharern is 7-7 in singles play and 9-7 in doubles play.
Urbanak is 5-10 at number two or three singles, and 7-7 in doubles. Singcharern
and Urbanak are 7-6 in doubles when playing together.
Southern Maine is 3-13 overall on the season and 1-1 in the Little East
Conference. The Huskies next match will be Wednesday afternoon against LEC
rival Plymouth State College in Plymouth, N.H.

USM Names Warren and Ha Men's Tennis Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Kendon Warren (Millinocket, Maine) and sophomore
Tung Ha (Auburn, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men's tennis team
have been named captains for the upcoming 2002 season. Veteran head coach Phil
Cole made the announcement.
The Huskies open their 2002 schedule March 23 when they played the
University of Wisconsin-Whitewater under the lights in Hilton Head, S.C. USM
will play a total of 11 matches over seven dates while in South Carolina. The
Huskies home opener will be April 4 against Colby College. All USM home matches
will be played at Gorham High School, weather permitting.
Warren, a third-year player, compiled an 1-11 record last spring at number
four singles and a combined mark of 2-10 with three doubles partners. In his
rookie season, he was 3-13 in singles and 4-12 in doubles.
Ha is in his second season with the Huskies. Last spring, he was 5-7 in
singles, primarily at number three, and 1-11 at number one doubles with David
Dube. He was the only USM player to reach a singles semifinal at the Little
East championships, losing a tough three-set match in the third flight to Kim
Yang of UMass Boston.
The Huskies are looking to rebound from a winless 2001 campaign and a
sixth place finish at the Little East tournament.
