Eric Miller Named USM Men's Soccer Coach

GORHAM, Maine -- Eric Miller, an assistant men's soccer coach at the
State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta for the past nine seasons, has
been appointed head coach of the University of Southern Maine men's soccer
program, effective immediately. USM Director of Athletics, Albert D. Bean Jr.,
made the announcement recently.
Miller, 35, had primary responsibility for working with the goalkeepers at
Oneonta, an NCAA Division I program. This is his first head coaching position
at the collegiate level. He succeeds Bobby Murphy who guided the Huskies to a
5-10-3 mark last fall in his only season as head coach. Murphy left USM to
pursue another professional opportunity in his home state of Texas.
A three-time All-SUNY performer at Oneonta, Miller was twice the Red
Dragons team captain. He was a New York State second team selection his senior
year. He received Oneonta's Athlete of the Year Award for 1987-88. He also
played one season (1998) with the New York Capital District Alley Cats of the
United States of Independent Systems League (USISL).
"I have a dynamic mind for the game. I want to utilize a 4-4-2 and play
attacking soccer. We'll build around the strengths of the players we have
available, and adapt our systems to those strengths," commented Miller.
A native of Jamaica who came to the United States in 1980, Miller received
a bachelor's degree in business and economics in 1988. He served as an
assistant coach with the Oneonta women's team for three seasons (1988-90) before
joining the men's staff in 1991. He also has served as the volunteer head coach
for the Oneonta Soccer Club training youth players in the U-16 and U-19 age

Bates Blanks Southern Maine 2-0
GORHAM, Maine -- The Bates College Bobcats scored a goal in each half
and sophomore goalkeeper Daniel Spector (Framingham, Mass./Framingham HS) made
five saves as the visiting Bobcats shut out the University of Southern Maine
Huskies, 2-0, in a men's college soccer match Tuesday afternoon at USM's Gorham
campus field.
The win was the fourth straight for the surging Bobcats who are now 8-4-1
overall. The shutout was their ninth of the season, a new single season record.
Bates hosts Bowdoin College at noon on Saturday in its regular season finale.
Southern Maine concluded its first season under head coach Bobby Murphy at
5-10-3 overall.
Bates wasted little time getting on the board as junior midfielder Chris
Sporcic (Stratham, N.H./St. Paul's School) converted from sophomore forward Drew
Weymouth (Holden, Mass./ Wachusett Regional HS) for his fourth goal of the
season eight minutes into the match.
Late in the match, with the Huskies pushing everyone into the attack
looking for the equalizer, the Bobcats were able to counter attack against the
shorthanded Husky defense. One counter attack resulted in a holding foul in the
penalty area that gave senior forward Andy Apstein (Waban, Mass./Belmont Hill)
the opportunity to take a penalty kick. Apstein placed a low, hard shot into
the right side of the net past the diving USM goalie, senior Corey Fleming (West
Enfield, Maine/Penobscot Valley HS), for his sixth goal of the season.
Fleming finished the match making 11 saves. Bates outshot the Huskies
17-8, and held a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.

defender along the end line and passed the ball out to the uncovered DiPrete who
had a wide open net.

Huskies, Nor'easters Play to Draw

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Matt McPhee (Merrimack, N.H./Merrimack HS)
scored an unassisted goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation
time to give the University of New England Nor'easters a 1-1 draw with the
University of Southern Maine Huskies in a men's college soccer match Thursday
afternoon. The match was the season opener for both teams.
The teams played through two 15-minute, sudden-death overtime periods
before settling for the draw.
Junior midfielder Jamie Everhart (Bethel, Conn./Bethel HS) gave the
Huskies a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute with a beautiful header off a left wing
cross from freshman back Matt Plante (North Bennington, Vt./Mt. Anthony Union
HS). The goal was the 18th of Everhart's career.
A miscue by the Huskies on an offside trap allowed McPhee an opportunity
to go in on senior goalie Corey Fleming (West Enfield, Maine/Penobscot Valley
HS). McPhee made the most of his chance burying a 10-yard shot past the
sprawling Fleming.
Both teams had chances to win in overtime, but both Fleming and Nor'easter
junior keeper Ian Nagus (Ipswich, Mass./Ipswich HS) came up with big saves.
