CARRIER, HOPKINS NAMED USM MEN'S SOCCER CAPTAINS
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Matt Carrier and junior Jim Hopkins have been named
captains for the University of Southern Maine MEN'S SOCCER team's upcoming 1997 season.
The Huskies' second-year head coach, John Skelton, made the announcement.
The Huskies open their 1997 season this weekend (September 6-7) as they travel to
Plattsburgh, N.Y., to play in the Plattsburgh State Pepsi Classic. USM will play the host Plattsburgh
State Cardinals in the first round Saturday at noon. St. John Fisher College will tangle with the
College of Staten Island in the second game at 2:00 p.m. The two losers will play in the third place
game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday followed by the two winners playing for the championship at 3:00 p.m.
Carrier (Poland, Maine/Windham H.S.) is the team's top returning scorer from last season
when he tallied four goals and two assists for 10 points in 17 games. The speedy, skillful midfielder
has six goals and four assists for 16 points in 31 career games since transferring to USM. Carrier is
expected to start in the midfield and provide the Huskies with plenty of offensive creativity.
"Matt provides us with a strong presence and personality on the field. He has a great tactical
understanding of the game and how it should be played. He will give us direction on the field come
game day," said Skelton about his most experienced player.
Hopkins (Bristol, Conn.) had three goals, including the game winner, in the Huskies' 5-1 win
over the University of Maine Machias last October. The three goals were the only points he had in
17 games during the 1996 season, his first with the Huskies program. Hopkins will be in the battle
for a starting position in midfield.
"Jimmy has the biggest heart on the team. He is totally committed to the game and making us
a better team," added Skelton.
The Huskies, 2-14-1 overall and 0-6-0 in the Little East Conference last fall, play their home
opener next Saturday (September 13) against Maine Maritime.
