Southern Maine Tabs Mike Keller as Men's Soccer Coach

GORHAM, Maine -- Mike Keller, formerly the head coach of men's soccer at
Maine Maritime Academy, has been named the new head coach for men's soccer at the
University of Southern Maine. Al Bean, Director of Athletics, made the
announcement of Keller's appointment following an extensive search.
Keller, who previously served as Huskies' head coach for one season (1992)
and guided the team to a 9-7-0 record, returns to the Gorham campus after seven
years as the head men's soccer coach at Maine Maritime Academy. While at Maine
Maritime, Keller compiled a 27-83-6 record and twice earned the North Athletic
Conference Soccer Sportsmanship award (2003, 2004). During his tenure at Maine
Maritime, Keller also served as head coach of the women's soccer program (1998-
2000) and softball team (2000-2004), and was named the North Atlantic Conference
Softball Coach of the Year in 2002.
"I'm very excited about the opportunity to return to USM," commented Keller.
"I think that the program over the last five years (under coach Eric Miller) has
grown in the right direction. I want to keep it going in that direction.
"I'll be hitting the recruiting trails immediately looking to bring in some
quality players. The players we have returning and those who decide to (attend
USM) will dictate the style of play. Our fundamental underlying philosophy will
be to work hard and earn everything we get."
"We're very pleased to have Mike rejoin our staff after a long absence," said
Bean. "He brings a wealth of collegiate coaching experience to the program and
should be an excellent fit within the department. He has outstanding contacts in
the soccer community and is already working to bring his first class of recruits
to USM. We're confident that Mike will continue to build the reputation and
success level of the men's soccer program."
Prior to his position at Maine Maritime, Keller served as the head coach of
men's soccer, the Director of Athletics and an Instructor in the Sports Management
program at Thomas College (Waterville, Maine). Keller guided the Terrier soccer
team for five years from 1993 through the 1997 season and totaled a record of 27-
47-5. While on the Waterville campus, Keller led the Terriers to a Maine Athletic
Conference championship in 1995, earning Maine College Soccer Coach of the Year
honors.
Keller earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics from the University
of Maine at Farmington in 1985. He began his collegiate coaching career in 1990
as the head coach of the University of Maine at Presque Isle, guiding the Owls to
a 4-9-1 record. Keller then went onto earn a master's degree in physical
education from the University of New Hampshire while serving as a graduate
assistant with the men's soccer program.
Keller has also worked as a high school teacher at Cony High School in
Augusta, Maine, from 1985-1989.
Active within the coaching profession, Keller is a member of the National
Soccer Coaches Association and has served as a representative for the NCAA New
England Women's Soccer committee and the Maine Athletic Conference representative
on the Northeast Regional Committee. He has also served as the State Director of
Olympic Development for Maine Youth Soccer.
Keller replaces Eric Miller who left after five seasons to pursue other
professional opportunities. Keller becomes the 12th head coach in the program's
48-year history. The Huskies are coming off of their finest season in 24 years,
finishing 11-5-3 overall and making their first post-season appearance since 1984.

Five Huskies Named to All-Little East Men's Soccer Team
Eric Miller Named Coach of the Year

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's soccer
team, which enjoyed its finest season in 23 years, reaped the rewards for its fine
season as a record five team members were named the All-Little East Conference
squad, and head coach Eric Miller was selected as the Coach of the Year. The all-
conference teams and individual awards were announced Monday afternoon.
Named to the All-Little East first team were senior forward Andy Budelman
(Rochester, N.H./ Spaulding HS) and senior midfielder Zach Rossignol (Portland,
Maine/Yarmouth HS). Earning spots in the second team were senior defenders Troy
Walz (Portland, Maine/Deering HS) and Mike Suesse (Westborough, Mass./Westborough
HS) and sophomore goalkeeper Chris Willard (Hampton, Conn./Parish Hill HS). This
is the first all-conference award for each player, and the first time that the
program has had five players honored.
Miller became the first USM men's soccer coach to be named Coach of the Year
in the 16-year history of men's soccer as a conference sport. The fifth-year
coach guided the Huskies to an 11-4-3 overall record and a 3-3-1 mark in
conference play. The Huskies were picked as the fifth seed in the ECAC Division
III New England Championship Tournament that begins Wednesday. It is the
program's first trip to a postseason tournament since 1984.
In his five seasons as the Huskies head coach, Miller has compiled a 30-53-10
overall record, including a 19-13-5 mark over the past two seasons.
"I believe the players recognition is well deserved," commented Miller.
"They each brought something to the team and the game that made us a better team.
"(Budelman) played the forward spot as well as any forward in the conference
this season. (Rossignol's) ability as our best passer was rewarding because I put
him in all our set pieces and he thrived on it. Willard was stellar in goal and
kept us in many games. (Walz) read the game very well, rarely got beat and was
able to control the game in the back. Suesse is a dedicated player who overcame
an injury to return and provide us with a lot of heart and leadership."
Miller was quick to share the credit for his honor. "I'm surprised (at being
selected) because there are other coaches in the league who did an outstanding job
this season. It's very rewarding because this team did the best job it could. It
was about having patience, sticking to a philosophy, and getting the players to
believe in that philosophy."
Budelman had a breakout season, scoring 17 goals and passing out three
assists for 37 total points. His 17 goals equals the second highest single-season
total in the 48-year history of the program. He had four game-winning goals
during the season.
Rossignol was an offensive stalwart in midfield, scoring one goal and setting
up nine others for 11 points.
Willard returned to the program after a year away from school to compile a
1.00 goals against average in 16 matches. He was credited with 76 saves, posted a
9-4-3 record and had seven shutouts.
Walz and Suesse were the anchors to a defense that allowed just 18 goals in
18 matches and had nine shutouts.

Southern Maine Edges Western Connecticut 2-1

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior midfielder Kevin Colwell (South Berwick,
Maine/Marshwood HS) snapped a 1-1 tie with 7:04 to play to give the University of
Southern Maine Huskies a 2-1 victory over the Western Connecticut State University
Colonials in a Little East Conference soccer match Sunday afternoon. The match
was the regular season finale for both sides.
The Huskies, who enjoyed their best season since 1981, improved to 11-4-3
overall and 3-3-1 in the conference. Western Connecticut, which had won its
previous two matches, finished 5-11-3 overall and 1-5-1 in the Little East.
Colwell picked up a loose ball along the left sideline, beat one defender's
tackle and slid a 12-yard, right-footed shot under the on-charging Western
Connecticut goalkeeper, freshman Paul Melitsanopoulos (Norwalk, Conn.), for his
second goal of the season.
After a scoreless first half, USM grabbed a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute as
senior forward Andy Budelman (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding HS) took a short pass from
freshman midfielder Kevin Dunham-Conway (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle HS) and
flicked a shot past Melitsanopoulos for his 17th goal of the season. Budelman's
17 goals equals the second highest single-season total for goals scored in the 48-
year history of the program. Ken Roberts had 17 goals in 1961. Only John Sylva,
who scored a record 20 in 1976, has more.
The lead lasted little more than two minutes as sophomore Bradley Fidler
(Morgantown, Pa./Twin Valley HS) ripped off a low 25-yard shot that USM senior
goalkeeper Jeff Gray (Scarborough, Maine/Yarmouth HS) got a hand on, but not
enough to deflect it wide. The goal was Fidler's seventh of the season.
Gray, making just his second start of the season, finished the match with six
saves. Melitsanopoulos was credited with three saves. Southern Maine had a slim
14-13 edge in shots while Western Connecticut had a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Southern Maine will wait until November 8 to see if it is selected for a
berth in the ECAC tournament.

SEGURA'S OT GOAL LIFTS EASTERN M-SOCCER INTO LEC PLAYOFFS

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Junior forward Carl Segura (AMHERST, MA) scored the
only goal of the match on his only shot 74 seconds into sudden death overtime to
boost the Eastern Connecticut State University men's soccer team to a 1-0 Little
East Conference win over the University of Southern Maine Saturday afternoon at
Thomas Nevers Field. With the victory, the Warriors qualify for the conference
playoffs.
Segura, who has four goals and an assist since moving to a starting position
on the front line five games ago, received a pass from junior midfielder Kevin
Marshall (BALTIC) deep on the right wing, carried into the box and unloaded a hard
line drive across the goal mouth. Southern Maine sophomore keeper Chris Willard
(Hampton, CT) dove to his right to get his hands on it but could not slow the ball
enough to keep it from carrying over the goal line.
Needing a win Saturday and a loss by the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth to qualify for its first LEC playoff berth in three years, Eastern
(6-10-3, 3-3-1) got both. Segura's fourth of the season gave the Warriors the win
over Southern Maine (10-4-3, 2-3-1) and UMass Dartmouth was shut out by conference
champion Keene State College, 6-0, Saturday morning. UMass Dartmouth entered play
Saturday in fourth place, two points ahead of Eastern and Southern Maine.
Unofficially, fourth-seeded Eastern will visit No. 1 seed Keene State and No.
3 seed Plymouth State University will visit No. 2 seed Rhode Island College in
semifinal-round matches Wednesday. The final is schedule for Saturday at the site
of the highest remaining seed. Rhode Island surged ahead of Plymouth Saturday in
the final standings with a 3-0 win Saturday over the Panthers.
Eastern ends the regular season with three straight shutout wins, all at
home. The Huskies entered play ranked in a tie for tenth in New England and
sharing fifth place in the conference with Eastern. Southern Maine will play a
makeup game with Western Connecticut on Sunday to conclude the regular season.

HS) scored a pair of first half goals to lead the University of Southern Maine
Huskies to a 3-0 victory over the Salem State College Vikings in a non-conference
men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
The win was the third straight for the Huskies who improved to 10-3-3

Martens (Tolland, Conn.) to work a give-and-go for his 16th goal of the season.
The 16 goals are the most by a USM player since Brian Cooke (1976) and Don
Franzese (1980) scored that many, and the third highest single-season total.

Tanikawa scores game-winning goal for Panthers

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Freshman forward Takeru Tanikawa (Shizuoka, Japan) broke a
scoreless deadlock in the 74th minute Saturday afternoon to propel the Plymouth
State University Panthers over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a
pivotal Little East Conference men's soccer contest at Panther Field.
The first half was somewhat of a stalemate with neither team being able to
score. The best opportunity came from the hosts with 17 minutes left to play in
the half. Senior Sebastian Rodriguez's (San Jose, Costa Rica) corner kick found
senior Nick Libera (Cromwell, Conn.) in the goal box, but his header was swept off
the goal line by a Husky defender.
The Panthers came out firing in the second half, continuing to put pressure
on Husky sophomore keeper Chris Willard (Hampton, Conn.). The hosts finally
pushed one by the netminder with 16 minutes remaining as sophomore Felix Rosen
(Stockholm, Sweden) crossed a beautiful ball to Tanikawa, who knocked home his
first goal of the season. PSU kept applying heavy amounts of pressure but
couldn't push another one in, out shooting the Huskies 8-2 in the second half and
12-4 for the game.
Senior Dan Custance (Holderness, N.H.) made just four saves in the Panther
net to register his second shutout of the season while Willard registered two for
the Huskies.

Rossignol, Willard Named LEC Players of the Week

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior midfielder Zach Rossignol (Portland, Maine/Yarmouth
HS) and sophomore goalie Chris Willard (Hampton, Conn./Parish Hills HS) of the
undefeated University of Southern Maine Huskies men's soccer team have been
selected as Players of the Week by the Little East Conference for the week of

Rossignol was named the LEC Offensive Player of the Week after he tallied one
goal and two assists in a 1-0-1 week for the Huskies. His one goal was a
significant one as it was the game-winning tally in a 2-0 USM victory over the
seventh-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears. The victory over the Polar Bears was
the first since 1992 for the Huskies. Rossignol then followed that performance up
by assisting on USM's two goals in a 2-2 draw at Rhode Island College.
In six matches this year, Rossignol has one goal and a team-leading three
assists.
Willard was selected the LEC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time
this season after he made seven saves in USM's 2-0 upset win over nationally-
ranked Bowdoin. Willard then made seven more saves to preserve a 2-2 draw at
Rhode Island College. The two goals given up by Willard snapped a string of 440
consecutive minutes played without allowing a goal.
Through the first seven matches, Willard has compiled a 0.57 goals against
average (four goals allowed), made 43 saves and posted four shutouts.
The Huskies, off to their best start since 1979, put their unbeaten record
(5-0-2) on the line Wednesday afternoon (4:00 p.m. start) when they host Colby
College at the USM Soccer Field on the Gorham campus.

24 matches with the Polar Bears dating back to 1981. Bowdoin, which had a string
of 11 straight regular season wins snapped, slips to 3-1-0 overall. The Polar
Bears were ranked seventh in the NSCAA national poll and number one in New England
at the start of the week.
The Polar Bears had a decided edge in play in the first half, but could not
penetrate the Huskies back line and Willard. Bowdoin out shot USM 9-1 in the
scoreless opening 45 minutes.
Senior Zach Rossignol (Portland, Maine/Yarmouth HS) got his first goal of the
season in the 60th minute on a long free kick into the box that glanced off a
Bowdoin defender and went into the net.
Senior Andy Budelman (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding HS) gave the Huskies an
insurance goal in the 84th minute when he flicked the Huskies' only corner kick of
the match with his head past the onrushing Bowdoin goalkeeper. Sophomore Eddie
Weddington (Augusta, Maine/Cony HS) picked up the assist.
Willard, who has not allowed a goal since the opening match of the year, made
a couple of fine saves in the second half to protect what was a one-goal lead. He
had a diving stop on sophomore Anthony Regis' (Topsfield, Mass./St. Paul's) low
drive, and he parried a high shot from freshman Nick Figueiredo (Wilmington,
Mass./St. John's Prep) safely over the crossbar. The shutout was the fourth of
the season for Willard, and the fifth straight for the Huskies.
Junior Lucas Bare (Los Almos, N.M.) was credited with one save, a brilliant
first half stop of sophomore Adam Bial (Wenham, Mass./Hamilton-Wenham HS) on a
breakaway, for Bowdoin.
Bowdoin finished the game with a 20-4 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in
corner kicks.
Southern Maine will travel to Providence, R.I., on Saturday to play Rhode
Island College. Bowdoin travels to Williamstown, Mass., to play Williams College
on Sunday in a rematch of last year's NESCAC championship game.
