Eastern Connecticut Eliminates Southern Maine 3-1

PORTLAND, Maine -- Junior Joe Lupone (Derby, Conn.) scored the first of his
two goals late in the first half to snap a 1-1 tie and lead the visiting Eastern
Connecticut State University Warriors to a 3-1 victory over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's soccer match played
Saturday evening at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. The game was the regular
season finale for both teams.
The loss eliminated the Huskies from a possible spot in the upcoming four-
team Little East Conference championship tournament that starts Wednesday. A USM
win over Eastern Connecticut would have moved the Huskies into the fourth and
final playoff slot. The Huskies ended their finest season since 1992 with an
8-9-2 overall record and a 3-4-0 mark in conference play.
Eastern Connecticut concluded its season with a 6-10-2 overall record and a
3-4-0 record in conference play. The Warriors closed the season with a pair of
conference wins.
Junior Zac Griffin (Manchester, Conn.) sent a long shot into the box that
eluded USM rookie goalkeeper Kane DiBenedetto (Halcott, N.Y.), and Lupone pounced
on the rebound for what proved to be the game-winning goal in the 44th minute.
Lupone would add an insurance goal for the Warriors in the second half.
The visitors from Willimantic, Conn., broke on top in the seventh minute as
sophomore Jarod Groat (Cobalt, Conn.) blasted a shot from 30 yards out into the
top corner past DiBenedetto.
Junior Zach Ansley (Tallahassee, Fla.) pulled the Huskies level with his
seventh goal of the season at 29:46. Ansley beat onrushing Eastern freshman
keeper Dan Murphy (Montville, Conn.) to a pass from sophomore Sean Tardif
(Hampden, Maine) at the back post and slid a shot into the net.
DiBenedetto played the first half, making three saves, before giving way to
senior Dan Hills (Tolland, Conn.) who had two saves in the second half for USM.
Murphy was credited with one save before giving way to junior Andrew Bessette
(Pawcatuck, Conn.) in the 82nd minute. Bessette also had one save.

Southern Maine Downs Salem State 2-0

SALEM, Mass. -- Senior goalkeeper Dan Hills (Tolland, Conn.) turned aside
seven shots and the University of Southern Maine Huskies scored once in each half
en route to a 2-0 victory over the Salem State College Vikings in a non-conference
match Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field.
The win evened the Huskies overall record at 8-8-2 heading into Saturday's
regular-season finale against Eastern Connecticut State University. Salem State
dropped to 5-11-0 overall. The Vikings play at Bridgewater State College on
Saturday.
Junior forward Zach Ansley (Tallahassee, Fla.) gave Hills an early cushion
when he stole an errant clearing pass and blasted a shot high from outside the
penalty box into the right corner past Salem State sophomore keeper Tim Doucette
(Boxford, Mass.) in the second minute of play. The goal was Ansley's sixth of the
season, and his third game-winning goal in the last five matches.
Hills preserved the lead until the 84th minute when sophomore midfielder
Craig Vickers (Walpole, N.H.) converted a pass from junior back Steve Read
(Wallingford, Conn.) for his second goal of the season to give the Huskies some
insurance.
Doucette finished with five saves for the Vikings. Salem State had a 10-6
advantage in shots while USM held a slim 3-2 margin in corner kicks.
The eight wins are the most by a USM men's soccer team since the 1992 squad
finished 9-7-0. The Huskies have won four of their last five matches, and six of
the last eight, to reach the .500 mark after a 2-6-2 start. If USM defeats
Eastern Connecticut on Saturday, the Huskies will make the four-team Little East
Conference postseason tournament for the first time since the conference adopted a
championship tournament in 1999.

GORHAM, Maine - Junior Zach Ansley (Tallahassee, FL) netted a pair of goals,
including his second consecutive game winner, and the resurgent University of
Southern Maine Huskies rolled to a 3-0 triumph over the visiting University of New
England Nor'easters on Tuesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
Triumphant in four-of-five outings, Southern Maine improved to 6-7-2 overall,

Ansley's first goal came in the 23rd minute, when he outran a defensive back

Bowdoin Blanks Southern Maine 2-0

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team, ranked 14th in the
latest national poll, received two goals from Andrew Russo (Weymouth, Mass.) and
defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies on Wednesday, 2-0.

DiBenedetto (Halcott, N.Y.) for a 1-0 Polar Bear lead.
After nearly 50 minutes of scoreless action, Russo netted the clincher, when
Danny Sullivan (Portsmouth, N.H.) found him in the middle and the sophomore
blasted it home for a 2-0 edge.
Bowdoin continued to get solid play defensively, allowing only five shots to
Southern Maine. Lucas Bare (Los Almos, N.M.) started the contest for Bowdoin and
played over 60 minutes, making one save. Travis Derr (Berlin, Conn.) closed out
