Pease Goal Gives Colonials 1-0 Win Over Huskies

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior midfielder John Pease (Newtown, Conn.) scored the
only goal of the match in the 56th minute to give the visiting Western Connecticut
State University Colonials a
1-0 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in Little East Conference
men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.
The win secured the top seed in next week's Little East Conference
championship tournament for the Colonials, and improved their overall record to
13-2-5. Western Connecticut finished atop the Little East regular season
standings with 6-1-0 record.
Southern Maine is 4-10-3 overall and 1-4-2 in the conference. The Huskies
did not qualify for the four-team conference tournament, and will wait until
Monday (Nov. 4) to find out if last week's match with Salem State College will be
rescheduled.
After an evenly played scoreless first half, the Colonials stepped up their
game to put pressure on USM junior goalkeeper Dan Hills (Tolland, Conn.)
throughout the second half. Pease got a loose ball along the left wing, dribbled
across to the corner of the 18-yard box and fired a curling shot into the upper
right corner. The goal was the third of the season for Pease.

Huskies Knock off Warriors 2-0 for First LEC Win

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Sophomore Mike Suesse (Westborough, Mass.) and
freshman Jonathan Martens (Tolland, Conn.) each scored their first goal of the
season as the visiting University of Southern Maine Huskies snapped an eight-match
winless streak with a 2-0 victory over the Eastern Connecticut State University
Warriors in a Little East Conference men's soccer match played Wednesday
afternoon. The match was rescheduled to Wednesday after being rained out last
Saturday.
The win improved USM's overall record to 4-9-3, and 1-3-2 in the conference.
It was the Huskies first win since beating the University of New England on
September 30, a stretch of eight matches (0-6-2). USM is 4-4-1 on the road this
season.
The loss was the third straight for the Warriors, who fall to 7-9-1 overall
and 2-4-0 in LEC play. Eastern Connecticut also was eliminated from contention
for a berth in next month's four-team LEC championship tournament.
Suesse gave the Huskies the lead at 27:41 when his shot from about 20 yards
out eluded Eastern Connecticut senior goalkeeper Arthur Lubniewski (Newington,
Conn.). It was the second-year midfielder's first career goal. Sophomore
midfielder Andy Budelman (Rochester, N.H.) drew the only assist.
The issue was not decided until the final minute of the match. With
Lubniewski way out of his net as the Warriors pressed everyone forward looking for
the equalizer, Martens picked up a long clear around midfield, beat the EC keeper
and dribbled the ball into the unguarded net with 13 seconds left to play.
Junior Dan Hills (Tolland, Conn.) and freshman Chris Willard (Hampton, Conn.)
each played a half and combined for nine saves to post the shutout for Southern
Maine. Lubniewski was credited with two saves. The Warriors had a 17-6 edge in
shots and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks during the match

Taylor Lance of Southern Maine Earns Men's Soccer Weekly Honor

GORHAM, Maine - University of Southern Maine freshman forward Taylor Lance
(Northfield, Vt.) was named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week after
helping the Huskies earn a draw in a key league match last week.
Despite holding a decided edge in play, Southern Maine found itself
trailing UMass Boston, 1-0, when the Beacons scored on a direct kick early in
the second half.
Lance leveled the match in the 67th minute of play on a well-executed
corner kick. Teammate Ian Frank (Gorham, Maine) curled a ball away from the
goal line and in front of the near post. Turning sideways to meet the ball,
Lance volleyed the pass in midair, and rifled a shot back across the goal mouth
and into the top corner.
The scored remained tied throughout regulation and the ensuing overtime
periods, and ended in a 1-1 tie. In three conference games, Southern Maine now
sports a 0-1-2 mark. After falling to Rhode Island College, 5-1, the Huskies
posted a 0-0 draw at defending conference champion Keene State College.
Overall, the Huskies stand at 3-7-3.
Lance, who has started seven games and appeared in nine, is currently
third on the team in scoring with two goals and two assists for six points. He
scored his first career-goal in a 2-1 loss at Lasell College, while he
registered an assist in the 2-0 win over the University of New England and the

Men's Soccer Captains Named at Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine: University of Southern Maine junior forward Ian Frank
(Gorham, Maine) and senior back Jason Kopp (Portland, Maine/Hall-Dale HS) have
been named co-captains of the 2002 men's soccer team.
"We will be asking a great deal from Ian and Jason," said third-year head
coach Eric Miller. "They have traditionally been among the hardest working
members of our program, and in this respect, they will provide an outstanding
example for the rest of the team. Equally important, this duo will be
responsible for directing our team approach on the playing field. Our overall
success will be determined by our ability to play as a team, and Jason and Ian
will need to step forward and provide the necessary guidance."
Frank, who has started 35 of 36 games during his first two years, has been
among the team's leading scorers during this time period. As a freshman, he
netted four goals and added an assist for nine points, while his career totals
currently read seven goals and one assist for 15 points. In this year's season-
opening 1-1 draw with Union, Frank scored the team's lone goal, when he bent a
free kick around the defensive wall and off the post.
While Frank has bolstered the team's offense over the past two years, Kopp
has spent the same period anchoring the team's defense. A starter in 37 of 38
contests, Kopp has helped Southern Maine blank five opponents, and register a
two-year goals against average of 2.10. A year ago, the Huskies surrendered
just 1.85 goals per game.
As a team, Southern Maine has been unable to duplicate the individual
accomplishments of Frank and Kopp. While the club has registered a two-year mark
of 7-30-2, this record is deceiving, since 11 of the losses have been by one
goal, including five in overtime.
"Our recent record is not indicative of our current potential," said
Miller. "We have made considerable progress over the past two years, and our on
the verge of making a breakthrough. Once we start winning, the team will gain
confidence and allow us to be more successful."
Following the season-opening draw with Union, Southern Maine returns to
action on Wednesday, September 11, when it concludes a two-game homestand
against St. Joseph's College. The Huskies close out the month of September with
a six-game road trip composed of games at Thomas (Sept. 14), UMaine-Farmington
(Sept. 19), Lasell College (Sept. 21), Colby-Sawyer (Sept. 26), Rhode Island
College (Sept. 28), and the University of New England (Sept. 30).
After opening the month of October with a home match against Colby (Oct.
2), the Huskies travel to Keene State (Oct. 5) and Bates (Oct. 8), before
returning home to face UMass Boston (Oct. 12), Bowdoin (Oct. 15), UMass
Dartmouth (Oct. 19), and Plymouth State (Oct. 22). Following a trip to Eastern
Connecticut (Oct. 26), the Huskies close out the month with a home date against
Salem State (Oct. 30).
Southern Maine concludes the regular season at home against Western
Connecticut (Nov. 2).
The Little East Conference Tournament will consist of the top four teams,
with a semi-final round to be held on November 6 and the championship set for
November 9.

Union, Southern Maine Play to 1-1 Draw

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior forward Chris Burns (Lowell, Mass.) capitalized
on a defensive miscue in the 77th minute to give the visiting Union College
Dutchmen a 1-1 draw with the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the season-
opening match for both teams.
Burns ran onto a loose ball that had bounced over USM freshman goalkeeper
Chris Willard (Hampton, Conn.) and placed a shot from six yards out into the
unguarded net to tie the game.
Southern Maine had taken a 1-0 lead in the 39th minute when junior forward
Ian Frank's (Gorham, Maine) curling free kick from just outside the penalty box
struck the far post and deflected into the net.
The Dutchmen carried the play through much of the second half and first
overtime period to pile up a 20-3 advantage in shots.
Willard finished the match with four saves while Union sophomore keeper
Kevin O'Connor (Reston, Va.) did not have to make a save.
Southern Maine returns to action Wednesday evening when it hosts St.
Joseph's College in an 8:00 game. Union will travel to Western New England
College for a 4:00 p.m. match on Tuesday.
