Bancroft, Kopp Named to All-Little East Men's Soccer Second Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior midfielder Joel Bancroft (Raymond,
Maine/Westbrook HS) and junior defender Jason Kopp (Portland, Maine/Hall-Dale
HS) have been named to the All-Little East Conference second team, following a
vote by the conference's eight head coaches.
The all-star teams and individual awards were announced Monday (November
5) afternoon by the commissioner of the Little East, William M. Moore. It is
the first time that either player has been named to the All-LEC squad.
Bancroft, who split his playing time between midfield and defender,
finished the season as the Huskies' leading scorer with two goals and two
assists for six points. Kopp did not score in 19 matches, but played
outstanding defense.
"Looking back over the whole season, Jason was one of our top players in
nearly every match. He rarely gets beat and is one of the best defensive
defenders in the conference. He's always positive and has learned a lot over
the last two seasons to make himself a better player," commented second-year
head coach Eric Miller.
"Joel brought some much needed leadership to the club. He did everything
I asked of him this season despite playing much of the year with some nagging
injuries that hampered his play. He was well liked by his peers and showed lots
of maturity with the younger players," added Miller.
During his two seasons with the Huskies, Kopp has one assist in 37
matches. Bancroft, who returned to the program this season after being away for
five years, scored his first collegiate points this year.
The Huskies finished the 2001 season 3-16-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the
Little East.

Bulow Scores Twice as Bowdoin Drops Southern Maine, 4-1
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team got two goals
from senior midfielder David Bulow (Denver, Col.) and a solid team effort in
defeating the University of Southern Maine, 4-1, in non-conference action
Thursday afternoon.
With the victory, the Polar Bears moved to 6-3-1 on the season, while the
Huskies dropped to 2-12-1.
Bowdoin needed little time scoring the opening goal, as Bulow drew the
Southern Maine goalie, sophomore Dan Hills (Tolland, Conn.), out of position and
found freshman forward Bobby Desilets (Mapleville, R.I.) in the box for the
opening score at 4:59.
Nearly five minutes later, USM sophomore midfielder Ian Frank (Gorham,
Maine) found Bowdoin's sophomore netminder, Travis Derr (Berlin, Conn.), out of
position, and chipped the ball over his head to knot the game at 9:44.
The Polar Bears would take control from there, as freshman back Bucky
Jencks (Honolulu, Hawaii) finished off a scramble in front to give Bowdoin a 2-1
edge at 14:12. Bulow scored off a free kick from 20 yards out at 19:04, and
then took a pass from junior forward Bart McMann (Marshfield, Mass.) to score
his second goal early in the second half, at 45:56.
The two goals raise Bulow's season total to 12, two short of the single-
season Bowdoin record, while his 27 career tallies rank him fourth on the career
goals list, five short of the school record.
Derr played 61 minutes and made one save, while freshman Tom Davis (San
Francisco, Calif.) made a single save in the final 29 minutes of action for
Bowdoin. Hills made ten saves for Southern Maine.

after missing three weeks with an injury to stop seven USM shots. Sophomore

the ball just outside the 18-yard box. He dribbled into the box and curled a
right-footed shot past the charging goalkeeper, sophomore Jeff Gray (Yarmouth,
Maine), and off the far post. The goal was the first of Bradford's collegiate

Huskies Blank Nor'easters 3-0
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine received goals from
three different players and sophomore goalkeeper Dan Hills (Tolland, Conn.) made
five saves as the Huskies shut out the visiting University of New England
Nor'easters, 3-0, in a non-conference men's college soccer match Monday
afternoon at the USM soccer pitch.
The win was the second of the season for the Huskies who improved to 2-6-1
overall. USM is 2-1-1 in its last four matches after an 0-5-0 start. UNE,
still searching for its first win of the season, fell to 0-6-0.
Freshman midfielder Mike Pickering (Arlington, Vt.) gave the Huskies the
only goal they would need at the 35:19 mark. UNE freshman goalkeeper Nate
Montimy (Bar Harbor, Maine) beat a USM forward to a 50-50 ball with a sliding
tackle just outside the box, but his clear went directly to Pickering about 35
yards out from goal. The rookie midfielder calmly hit a low shot into the
vacated net for his first collegiate goal.
The Huskies got an insurance marker in the 80th minute when senior Joel
Bancroft (Raymond, Maine) converted a penalty kick. Freshman Nate Stevens
(Rockland, Maine) closed out the scoring in the final minute with his first
collegiate goal from a scramble about 10 yards out.
Hills kept the Huskies out in front before Bancroft's goal with a couple
of excellent saves. Midway through the second half as the Nor'easters pressed
to get the equalizer, he stopped freshman Geoff Champagne's (North Smithfield,
R.I.) initial drive, then parried over the crossbar rookie Joshua Roys'
(Gilford, N.H.) shot off the rebound.
Montimy finished the match with five saves.

twice within a span of 1:31 early in the first half to give the University of
Southern Maine Huskies their first win of the season, a 2-0 decision over the
Husson College Braves, in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon at the USM
soccer field.
Rinaldi's two goals were the first of the season for the Huskies who had
been shut out in their first five matches this season. USM is now 1-5-0
overall. Husson dropped its third straight decision to fall to 0-3-0.
The first goal of the Huskies season came at 9:45 as Rinaldi took a
through pass from freshman Kevin Colwell (South Berwick, Maine), made one touch
by a Husson defender and beat freshman goalkeeper Cliff Urquhart (Eastport,
Maine) from about eight yards out.
A minute and a half later, Rinaldi was the beneficiary of a misplay in the
back by Braves defense on restart taken by senior Joel Bancroft (Westbrook,
Maine) from just outside the box. Bancroft's cross into the box went untouched
by Husson and Rinaldi was able to run onto the ball and knock it into the empty
net.
