Eric Miller Named USM Men's Soccer Coach

GORHAM, Maine -- Eric Miller, an assistant men's soccer coach at the
State University of New York (SUNY) at Oneonta for the past nine seasons, has
been appointed head coach of the University of Southern Maine men's soccer
program, effective immediately. USM Director of Athletics, Albert D. Bean Jr.,
made the announcement recently.
Miller, 35, had primary responsibility for working with the goalkeepers at
Oneonta, an NCAA Division I program. This is his first head coaching position
at the collegiate level. He succeeds Bobby Murphy who guided the Huskies to a
5-10-3 mark last fall in his only season as head coach. Murphy left USM to
pursue another professional opportunity in his home state of Texas.
A three-time All-SUNY performer at Oneonta, Miller was twice the Red
Dragons team captain. He was a New York State second team selection his senior
year. He received Oneonta's Athlete of the Year Award for 1987-88. He also
played one season (1998) with the New York Capital District Alley Cats of the
United States of Independent Systems League (USISL).
"I have a dynamic mind for the game. I want to utilize a 4-4-2 and play
attacking soccer. We'll build around the strengths of the players we have
available, and adapt our systems to those strengths," commented Miller.
A native of Jamaica who came to the United States in 1980, Miller received
a bachelor's degree in business and economics in 1988. He served as an
assistant coach with the Oneonta women's team for three seasons (1988-90) before
joining the men's staff in 1991. He also has served as the volunteer head coach
for the Oneonta Soccer Club training youth players in the U-16 and U-19 age
groups.
