Justin Vigeant, Orion Winkler Named LEC Rookies of the Year Coach Scott Hutchinson Picked as Coach of the Year
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team swept the Little East Conference Rookie of the Year honors that were among the end-of-the-season awards released today by commissioner Jonathan Harper following a vote by the conference's head coaches. Harper announced that freshman sprinter Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) had been selected as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Year, and freshman pole vaulter Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was named the Rookie Field Athlete of the Year. In addition, Harper revealed that USM head coach Scott Hutchinson had been voted the Coach of the Year by his peers for the second straight year. Keene State College captured the other two awards. Senior Peter Najem received the Track Athlete of the Year award and sophomore Bryan Kolacz was the recipient of the Field Athlete of the Year award. Vigeant is the second straight Southern Maine athlete to be named the conference's top rookie track athlete, joining Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) as a recipient of the top track rookie award. Vigeant established a school record and posted a NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 200 meters at the State of Maine Championships, tripping the clock at 21.74 seconds. Vigeant also captured the 100-meter individual title and combined with his teammates to win the 4 x 100-meter relay at the state meet to earn the prestigious Alan G. Hillman Award, presented to the most valuable track athlete. The Wells, Maine, product also received All-New England honors in the 200 meters with his eighth place result. A week earlier, he was a part of the school-record 4 x 400-meter relay team that won the New England Division III Championship (3:19.91). Vigeant earned a pair of All-New England Alliance citations for placing second in the 200-meters and third in the 100-meter. He was selected as the LEC track athlete of the week for April 19, while claiming the rookie award three times on the campaign. Winkler made an immediate impact in the Southern Maine field lineup, specializing in the pole vault. He qualified for New England Open and ECAC Championships, while earning All-New England honors at the Division III Championships with a fifth place vault of 4.35 meters (14-3 1/4). The Brownfield, Maine, native swept the New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships by clearing 4.34 meters (14-2 3/4). Winkler was one of nine Huskies to win a State of Maine Championship with a season-high vault of 4.50 meters (14-9). He was twice named the conference rookie field athlete of the week. Hutchinson guided Southern Maine to the program's first New England Alliance Championship and second straight Little East Conference Championship this spring, outdistancing Westfield State College by just 1.5 points for the Alliance title. The Huskies' equaled the program's best finish at the New England Division III Championship, finishing eighth in the team standings. Hutchinson also was named the indoor season coach of the year For the second consecutive campaign, Hutchinson mentored an All-American as senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) repeated in the decathlon at the national meet. Seven of his student-athletes were named to the Little East All- Academic teams for the spring semester.

NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships James Spaulding Earns All-American Honors in Decathlon
MARIETTA, Ohio -- University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) completed the second day of the decathlon in seventh place to earn All-America honors at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Marietta (Ohio) College. Spaulding becomes the first two-time All-American in the history of the USM men's track and field program. He earned All-America honors in the decathlon last year. In ninth place when he stepped to the starting line for the final event, the 1500 meters, Spaulding posted a time of 4 minutes, 37.04 seconds to pick up 699 points and moved up two positions. He finished the grueling two-day, ten- event competition with 6,650 points, one point ahead of eighth place finisher Obinna Nwanna of Case Western Reserve University. The Lovell brothers, juniors Josh and Jeremy, of Linfield College finished one-two in the decathlon with 7,080 and 6,857 points respectively. Ten of the 16 competitors who completed all 10 events surpassed the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 6,600 points. Starting the second day of competition in seventh place, Spaulding slipped to ninth after the first event, the 110-meter hurdles. Spaulding posted a time of 16.53 seconds in the hurdles to earn 674 points. In the next event, he threw the discus 31.98 meters (104-9) to collect 503 points while remaining in ninth place. Spaulding moved into the top eight after the pole vault where he cleared 4.05 meters (13-3 1/2) and picked up 631 points. He slipped back to ninth after the javelin which he threw a distance of 48.71 (159-9) for 570 points, setting the stage for the 1500. Seeded fourth heading into the competition based upon his school record performance at the New England Division III Championships (April 30-May 1), Spaulding missed his record mark by 29 points.

Spaulding Seventh in Decathlon after First Day at NCAA Championships
MARIETTA, Ohio -- University of Southern Maine senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) sits in seventh place after the first day of competition in the decathlon at the 2009 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field National Championships being held at Marietta College. After five events, Spaulding has amassed 3,573 total points, 249 points behind first-day leader Josh Lovell of Linfield College. Spaulding is 58 points ahead of his school record pace set three weeks ago at the New England Division III Championships. Spaulding opened the competition running the 100-meter dash in 11.55 seconds to earn 742 points. He followed with a jump of 6.68 meters (21-11) in the long jump to add 739 to his total. In the third event of the day, the shot put, he placed second among the competitors with a throw of 13.97 meters (45-10) for 727 more points. He added 644 points after clearing 1.82 meters (5-11 1/2) in the high jump. Spaulding closed the day running the 400 meters in 52.08 seconds for 721 points. The five events making up the second day’s competition are the 110-meter high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters. An All-American in the decathlon in 2008, Spaulding was 10th after the first five events last year with 3,315 points.

Alex Gomes, Evan Davis Earn All-ECAC Honors
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine men’s outdoor track and field team, freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) and sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union), earned All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) honors Friday at the ECAC Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Springfield College. Gomes picked up his All-ECAC honor with a sixth place finish in the 5,000 meters, crossing the finish line in 15 minutes, 34.04 seconds. Davis earned his citation with an eighth place finish in the 110-meter hurdles. Davis ran a time of 15.64 seconds in Friday’s final. He earned a spot in the final with his trials time of 15.63 on Thursday. Gomes and Davis combined to earn four points for Southern Maine. USM finished in a tie for 44th place with five other teams. The two-day meet concludes the regular season for USM. Moravian College captured the team title with 64.50 points. Rounding out the top five spots were Rochester Institute of Technology with 45 points, Rensselaer and Ithaca College tied for third with 36, and Cortland State and Buffalo State College tied for fifth with 32.50. Senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine), who did not compete a the ECAC meet, will travel to Ohio next week for the NCAA Division III Championships. Spaulding will compete in the decathlon.

Mattia Zagon Named LEC Rookie Field Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine freshman long jumper Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) has been named the Little East Conference Rookie Field Athlete of the Week for his performance at the NEIcAAA (New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association) Championships held last week at the University of Massachusetts. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, made the announcement Monday afternoon. Zagon collected his third Rookie Field Athlete of the Week citation of the outdoor season on the strength of his seventh place finish in the long jump with a leap of 6.81 meters (22-4 1/4). That performance earned Zagon All-New England honors. Zagon and classmate Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) combined to score three points as USM finished in a three-way tie with Colby College and Holy Cross for 35th place. The University of Rhode Island took the team title with 103 points. Zagon, Vigeant Earn All-New England Honors
AMHERST, Mass. -- Freshmen Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) and Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team earned All-New England honors this weekend at the NEIcAAA (New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association) Championships held at the University of Massachusetts. Zagon picked up his honor on Friday placing seventh in the long jump with a leap of 6.81 meters (22-4 1/4). Vigeant earned a spot in Saturday's 200-meter final by winning his trials heat on Friday with a time of 21.91 seconds. He finished eighth in the finals with a time of 24.09. Vigeant also ran in the 100-meter trials, running the 11th quickest time of 11.13 seconds. Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) and junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) had strong runs in the 5,000 meters on Friday. Gomes came across the line in 13th place with a time of 15:06.63. Jasud was three spots back in 16th in a time of 15:08.93. Gomes also raced in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday, finishing 21st with his time of 9:50.71. Sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union) ran the 11th quickest time in the 110-meter hurdles trials crossing the line in 15.67. Zagon and Vigeant combined to score Southern Maine's three points to finish in a three-way tie with Colby College and Holy Cross for 35th place. The University of Rhode Island took the team title with 103 points. Host UMass was next with 80, followed by the University of Connecticut with 61, the University of New Hampshire with 54 and the University of Massachusetts Lowell and Southern Connecticut State University with 40. Spaulding Named LEC Co-Field Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) has been named the Little East Conference Co-Field Athlete of the Week in recognition of his school record setting performance to win the decathlon at the New England Division III Championships last weekend. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced today that Spaulding and Keene State College sophomore thrower Bryan Kolacz (Brentwood, N.H.) were tabbed as Co-Field Athletes of the Week. Kolacz won two throws titles at the N.E. Division III meet held at Springfield College. Spaulding, a 2008 NCAA Division III All-American in the decathlon, won the two-day, ten-event test with 6,679 points to smash his previous school record mark (6,286) by nearly 400 points. Spaulding's point total also automatically qualified him for the 2009 NCAA Division III Championships later this month in Marietta, Ohio. During the competition, Spaulding placed first in three of the six field events (long jump, shot put, pole vault), including a career best mark of 4.25 meters (13-11 1/4) in the pole vault. He placed in the top three in eight of the ten events. Helped by Spaulding's performance, the Huskies equaled their best finish at the meet coming home in eighth place with 45 points. The Huskies were just 11 points shy of third place in the final standings. Williams College won the team title with 136.66 points. Southern Maine Places Eighth at NE Division III Championships
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team equaled its best finish at the New England Division III Championships placing eighth among the 26 scoring teams at the three-day meet held at Springfield College. The Huskies complied 45 points over the three days, and were only 11 points out of third place. Williams College took the team title with 136.66 points, followed by MIT with 108, Springfield with 56, WPI with 52.50 and Bates College with 51. For the second straight weekend, the Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay team won its event with a school record time. The foursome of freshmen Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) and Jake Moore (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region), sophomore Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) finished in the top spot with a time of 3 minutes, 19.91 seconds. Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) was the top individual performer on Saturday taking second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:02.41, and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) was eighth in the race crossing the line in 15:20.07. Mercer took a fifth place finish in the 400 meters with a time of 50.04. Freshman Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) tied for fifth in the pole vault clearing 4.35 meters (14-3 1/4). Sophomores Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt.) and Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) finished sixth and eighth respectively in the 110-meter hurdles. Davis crossed the line in 15.57. Shepard tripped the timer in 15.81. The 4 x 100-meter relay came home seventh with a time of 43.43. Senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) won the decathlon, contested Thursday and Friday, with a school record 6,679 points that automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Division III National Championships later this month. Freshman Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) placed sixth in the long jump on Friday with a leap of 6.89 meters (22-7 1/4).

James Spaulding Wins Decathlon at N.E. Division III Championships Senior Qualifies for NCAA Championships; Smashes School Record
SPRINGFIELD, Mass -- Senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team won the decathlon with a record-setting performance at the New England Division III Championships being held at Springfield College. Spaulding amassed a total of 6,679 points in the ten events contested over two days. That total automatically qualifies him for the NCAA Division III Championships later this month, and smashed his previous school record (6,286) set last year by nearly 400 points. In Friday's five events, Spaulding was third in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.13 seconds, second in the discus with a throw of 34.74 meters (114- 0), first in the pole vault with a personal best effort of 4.25 meters (13-11 1/4), second in the javelin with a throw of 47.01 meters (154-3) and fifth in the 1500 meters crossing the line in 4:43.91. In other events contested Friday, freshman Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) finished sixth in the long jump with a leap of 6.89 meters (22-7 1/4). Southern Maine has 13 points after four events and is tied with Bates College for fifth place. Williams College leads the meet with 29 points, followed by M.I.T. with 24. Competition continues Saturday (10:00 a.m.).

Spaulding Leads Decathlon After Day One at N.E. Div.III Championships
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- University of Southern Maine senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) leads the decathlon after the first day of competition at the New England Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Springfield College. Spaulding, a 2008 All-American in the event, compiled 3,515 points in the five events - 100 meters, long jump, shot put, high jump, 400 meters - contested Thursday afternoon. He was first in the long jump with a leap of 6.86 meters (22-6 1/4) and the shot put with a throw of 13.59 meters (44-7). He was second in the 100-meter dash crossing the line in 11.85 seconds. He earned over 700 points in four of the five events completed Thursday. Competition in the decathlon resumes Friday (12:00 p.m.) with the 110- meters hurdles, followed by the discus, pole vault, javelin and 1500 meters. Competition in other events gets underway later in the afternoon, and continues through Saturday.

USM Sweeps Little East Conference Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- For the second time in the last three weeks, the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team has swept the four weekly honors presented by the Little East Conference. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced today that junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) had been named the Track Athlete of the Week, and senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) was selected as the Field Athlete of the Week. Freshmen Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) and Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) were tabbed as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week and Rookie Field Athlete of the Week respectively. USM swept the four weekly awards on April 13, and took three out of four last week. This is the fourth time this season that Vigeant has been picked as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week. Spaulding and Winkler are receiving their second citation of the season, and Richardson is the recipient of his first LEC weekly honor. Richardson earned his citation for winning the 5,000 meters in a time of 15 minutes, 27.57 seconds. He won the event by more than 30 seconds racing in oppressively hot conditions. Spaulding won the LEC shot put title with a personal best throw of 14.01 meters (45-11 3/4), placed second in the pole vault for another personal best mark of 3.89 meters (12-9) and finished third in the discus and javelin with marks of 36.57 meters (120-0) and 48.20 meters (158-2) respectively. In the Alliance scoring, he earned points in the shot put (3rd), pole vault (3rd) and discus (6th). Playing a major role in the Huskies victory, Vigeant took the LEC title in the 200 meters with his time of 21.91. He also placed second in the 100 meters crossing the line in 11.22. Vigeant ran the leadoff leg of the Huskies record setting 4 x 100-meter and 4 x 400-meter relays that won conference titles. The 4 x 100 lowered its record time by 0.16 seconds to 42.74, and the 4 x 400 broke the previous mark of 3:22.13 set last year with its winning time of 3:20.01. The 4 x 400 was the final event of the meet and provided the Huskies with the points to edge Westfield State by 1.5 points for their first-ever Alliance championship. Winkler won both the Little East and Alliance titles in the pole vault by clearing 4.34 meters (14-2 3/4). Southern Maine won its second straight Little East Conference championship compiling 261 points, easily outdistancing runner-up Keene State College with 113. USM won its first Alliance championship, edging Westfield State, 184.0- 182.5. Southern Maine Wins First N.E. Alliance Championship
WESTFIELD, Mass. -- The University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team completed an improbable comeback Saturday winning the final event, the 4 x 400-meter relay, to capture its first New England Alliance Outdoor Track and Field Championship. The meet was held at Westfield State College. Trailing Westfield State going into the 4 x 400 relay, the Southern Maine combination of freshmen Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) and Jake Moore (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region), sophomore Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) edged Westfield State for first place in a school record time of 3 minutes, 20.01 seconds. That time broke the old record of 3:22.13 set last spring by more than two seconds. Westfield State was second in 3:20.49. Southern Maine took the team title with 184 points with Westfield State just 1.5 points back. Fitchburg State College was third with 96.5 points, followed by Keene State College with 83 and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with 63. The 4 x 400 record was one of three school record set Saturday. The 4 x 100-meter relay lowered that record by 0.16 seconds with its second place finish, and freshman Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) established a new standard in the 800 meters with his third place time of 1:56.34. He broke the previous mark of 1:56.92 set last year by Jimmy Sawyer. Southern Maine earned three individual titles on the day. Junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) won the 5,000 meters with his time of 15:27.75, sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union) captured the 110-meter hurdles in 15.56, and freshman Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) took first in the pole vault by clearing 4.34 meters (14-2 3/4). Richardson led a 1-2-4 finish by USM in the 5,000, and Davis led a 1-2-4 finish in the 110 hurdles. Following Richardson across the line were freshman Erich Neuts (Portland, Maine/Deering) in second (15:58.37) and junior Will Fulford (Kennebunk, Maine) in fourth (16:22.11). Scoring valuable points in the hurdles were sophomore Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) in second (15.70) and freshman A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) in fourth (16.25). Shepard also placed second in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 56.43. Marden scored a third place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 13.28 meters (43-7). In addition to his win in the 110 hurdles, Davis picked up third place finishes in the 400 hurdles (56:87) and the hight jump (1.86 meters/6-1 1/4). Vigeant continued his impressive rookie season with a second place result in the 200 meters (21.91) and third in the 100 meters (11.22). In addition to his school record in the 800, Even was third in the 1500 meters (4:06.09). Mercer also placed third in the 400 meters (50.81). Senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) had two third place finishes, taking the bronze in the shot put (14.01 meters/45-11 3/4) and the pole vault (3.89 meters/12-9). Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) earned a second place finish in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:55.19). The Huskies next event will be the New England Division III Championships this Thursday through Saturday at Springfield College.

Vigeant, Zagon Receive LEC Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team, freshmen Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) and Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland), have been recognized by the Little East Conference for their outstanding performances at the annual State of Maine Championships last Saturday. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced today that Vigeant had been named both the Track Athlete of the Week and the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week, and Zagon was picked as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. The Rookie Track Athlete of the Week award was the third in four weeks for Vigeant, and Zagon received the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week citation for the second straight week. At the State Championships, Vigeant was the recipient of the Alan G. Hillman Most Valuable Track Athlete Award after winning two individual events and running the lead leg of two winning relays. Vigeant won the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.10 seconds in the finals. He came back later to win the 200 meters in a school record and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 21.74 seconds. He broke his own record set three weeks ago by six-tenths of a second. Vigeant ran the lead leg of the Huskies winning 4 x 100 and 4 x 400-meter relays. The 4 x 100 group of Vigeant, sophomore Curtis Coleman (Bangor, Maine), Zagon and junior Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) turned in a time of 42.90 seconds to set a school record, breaking the old mark of 43.21 set in April 2004. Zagon won the long jump title with a school record tying jump of 6.91 meters (22-8). He tied the mark set two weeks ago by senior teammate James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine). Along with running a leg in the 4 x 100 relay, Zagon placed sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 22.74. The Huskies finished third in the meet with 142 points. Bowdoin College won the team title with 230 points, snapping a string of seven straight titles for Bates College. Bates was runner-up with 206 points. Vigeant Wins Two State Titles, Sets School Record in 200
LEWISTON, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track team won nine state titles Saturday, highlighted by freshman Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) sweeping the 100 and 200-meter dashes, en route to a third place finish at the annual State of Maine Championships held at Bates College. Bowdoin College captured the team title with 230 points, followed by Bates with 206 and USM with 142. Colby College rounded out the four-team field with 36 points. Vigeant had a big day winning the 100 with his time of 11.10 seconds, then came back later to win the 200 with a school record effort of 21.74 seconds. He broke his own record in the 200, set three weeks ago, by six-tenths of a second and provisionally qualified for the NCAA outdoor national championships. Vigeant also ran the leadoff leg of the Huskies winning 4 x 100 and 4 x 400- meter relays. Other winners on the track for Huskies included sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt.) in the 110-meter hurdles (15.47) and junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) in the 5,000 meters (15:27.71). Joining Vigeant on the 4 x 100 team that also set a school record with its combined time of 42.90 seconds were sophomore Curtis Coleman (Bangor, Maine), freshman Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) and junior Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.). They broke the old mark of 43.21 set in April 2004. McKeon also had a third place finish in the 100 dash (11.24). The 4 x 400 team, which won with a time of 3:23.94, was comprised of Vigeant, Davis, senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) and freshman Jake Moore (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region). Winning events in the field were Zagon, who took the long jump title with a school record-tying leap of 6.91 meters (22-8) and classmates AJ Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) in the triple jump with a jump of 13.36 meters (43- 10) and Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) in the pole vault clearing 4.50 meters (14-9). Zagon equaled the long jump record set two weeks ago by senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine). The Huskies will travel to Westfield, Mass., next Saturday (11:00 a.m.) to compete in the New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships, hosted by Westfield State College.

Spaulding Battles to 16th Place Finish in Holy Cross Decathlon
WORCESTER, Mass. -- Despite a nagging hamstring injury, University of Southern Maine senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) managed to battle his way to a 16th place finish at the Holy Cross Decathlon held Wednesday and Thursday in Worcester, Mass. Spaulding finished the two-day, 10-event test with 4,912 points to finish 16th among the 22 competitors who completed all 10 events. The point total was high enough to qualify Spaulding for the decathlon at the New England Division III Championships April 30-May 2. Among the second day events, Spaulding had a personal best in the discus with a throw of 36.05 meters and had an excellent performance in the javelin throwing 49.68 meters (163-0). An All-American in the decathlon last year, Spaulding was hampered by his injured leg in Wednesday's final event, the 400 meters, and Thursday's opening event, the 110-meter hurdles. Sophomore Justin Fitzsimmons (St. Albans, Vt./Missisquoi Valley), competing in his first decathlon, scored 3,817 points and finished 20th. The Huskies will compete on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at the annual State of Maine Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships being held at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine.

USM Sweeps Little East Conference Weekly Awards
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team swept the four weekly Little East Conference awards that were announced today. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East, announced that senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) had been picked as the Track Athlete of the Week, sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt.) was tabbed as the Field Athlete of the Week, and freshmen Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) and Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) were selected as the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week and Rookie Field Athlete of the Week respectively. Competing at a four-team event held at Colby College, Mercer won the 400 meters with a time of 49.59 seconds to lead a 1-2-3-4 finish by the Huskies in the event. He also placed fourth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.20. Mercer's time in the 400 qualified him for the New England Division III Championships and the ECAC Division III Championships. Davis had three top three finishes, including setting a school record in the high jump. He won the high jump by clearing 1.90 meters (6-2 3/4), breaking the old mark of 1.88 meters (6-2) held by four competitors. He placed second in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 16.13, and third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.86. The marks qualified Davis for all three events at the upcoming New England Division III Championships, and he met the ECAC Division III standard for the high jump. Two weeks ago (March 30), the versatile Davis was picked as the LEC Track Athlete of the Week. For the second time in three weeks, Vigeant claimed the weekly rookie honors on the track. He posted second place finishes in the 200 meters, crossing the line in 22.53, and 400 meters with a time of 49.86. He is now qualified for both events at the New England Division III meet and in the 400 meters at the ECAC meet. The 2009 LEC indoor Rookie Field Athlete of the Year, Zagon collected his first weekly honor of the outdoor season by winning the long jump with a leap of 6.58 meters (21-7 1/4) and posting a third place result in the 200 meters with a time 23.18. Zagon's long jump mark qualified him for the New England Division III meet. Southern Maine finished third in the tightly-contested meet, just 17 points (227-210) behind meet winner Bates College. Southern Maine Third at Colby Invitational
WATERVILLE, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team won four events and set a school record in the high jump en route to a third place finish in a tightly-contested four-team meet on Saturday at Colby College. The Huskies compiled 210 points to place third behind Bates College with 227 and M.I.T. with 215. Host Colby College rounded out the field with 51 points. Sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union) won the high jump with an outdoor record jump of 1.90 meters (6-2 3/4), breaking the old mark of 6-2 held by four competitors. Davis also had a second place finish in the 110- meter hurdles with a time of 16.13 seconds, and a third in the 400-meter hurdles with his time of 56.86. Senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) led an impressive 1-2-3-4 finish by the Huskies in the 400 meters, tripping the timer in 49.59. Freshman Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) was right behind Mercer in 49.86, followed by classmates Jake Moore (Bridgton, Maine/Lake Region) in 50.54 and Ian Golder (South Portland, Maine) in 51.35. Freshmen Mattia Zagon (Portland, Maine/Portland) and A.J. Marden (Victory, Vt./St. Johnsbury) won the long jump and triple jump respectively. Zagon took the long jump with a leap of 6.58 meters (21-7 1/4). He also had a third place result in the 200 meters with a time of 23.18. Marden took the triple jump with an effort of 12.99 meters (42-7 1/2), and finished fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 16.55. Sophomore Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) posted two top three results, taking second in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.59 and a third in the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 16.15. Others earning second place finishes included freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:05.80), junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) in the 5,000 meters (15:21.18), sophomore Tyler Lenois (Colraine, Mass./Mohawk Trail) in the long jump (19-5 1/4), freshman Chris Lockett (Somersworth, N.H.) in the javelin (154-11), sophomore Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) in the high jump (5-10 3/4) and senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) in the shot put (44-2 1/2). Spaulding, Winkler Picked for Weekly LEC Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team, senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), have been selected for weekly honors by the Little East Conference for their performances this past Saturday at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational held at Fitchburg State College. Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced today that Spaulding had been chosen as the Field Athlete of the Week, and Winkler was tabbed as the Rookie Field Athlete of the Week. It was the first LEC weekly award for each during the outdoor season. Spaulding, a 2008 Division III All-American in the decathlon, won the long jump with a school record jump of 22-8 (6.91 meters). He broke the previous record of 22-0 set by Kevin Faria in April 2001. Winkler took the top spot in the pole vault by clearing 4.19 meters (13-9). The pair helped the Huskies to a second place finish among the 20 teams participating in the meet. Bates College won the meet, coming from behind in the final event (discus) to edge out the Huskies, 153-147.50. Southern Maine Finishes Second at Sheehan Memorial Invitational James Spaulding Sets School Record in Long Jump
FITCHBURG, Mass. -- Senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) set a school record en route to winning the long jump Saturday as the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team finished in second place at the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational meet held at Fitchburg State College. The meet went right down to the final event, the men's discus, before a winner was determined. Bates College scored 15 points in the discus to overcome a 9.5-point deficit and win the team title with 153 points. USM was second with 147.50 points, followed by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with 106 points, host Fitchburg State with 87 and Keene State College with 67. Twenty teams scored in the meet. Spaulding won the long jump with a jump of 22-8 (6.91 meters), breaking the old record of 22-0 set by Kevin Faria in April 2001. Spaulding's first place finish was one of four by the Huskies. Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) won the 5,000 meters with his time of 15 minutes, 17.17 seconds. Freshmen Orion Winkler (Brownfield, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and AJ Marden (Victory, Vt.) took first place in the pole vault and 110-meter hurdles respectively. Winkler cleared 4.19 meters (13- 9) in the pole vault while Marden posted a time of 17.24 in the hurdles. Marden also collected a third place result in the triple jump with a leap ot 13.09 meters (42-11 1/2). Sophomore Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair Haven Union) posted a pair of second place finishes, taking the runner-up spot in the 110 hurdles with a time of 17.71 and in the high jump with a jump of 1.83 meters (6-0). Others earning second place results included junior Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine) in the 10,000 meters with his time of 34:11.97, junior Justin Richardson (Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) in the 5,000 with a time of 15:33.07, and freshmen Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy) and Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) in the 1500 and 200 meters respectively. Even posted a time of 4:09.30 while Vigeant tripped the timer in 22.67. Sophomore Matt Harmon (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) was third in the shot put with a throw of 12.64 meters (41-5 3/4). Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday (12:00 p.m.) at Colby College.

Evan Davis, Justin Vigeant Receive LEC Weekly Accolades

Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the Little East Conference, announced this afternoon that Davis had been selected as the Track Athlete of the Week, and Vigeant was named the Rookie Track Athlete of the Week. Davis placed in three events while Vigeant set a school record en route to winning the 200 meters and placed third in the 100 meters. In the 110-meter hurdles, Davis placed fourth in the finals with a time of 15.95 seconds. He later finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.10. He opened his day placing third in the high jump by clearing 1.86 meters (6-1 1/4). In his first career outdoor meet, Vigeant knocked 0.14 seconds off the previous 200-meter record set last spring by Derek Murchie. Vigeant won the event with his time of 22.34. Earlier in the meet, he placed third in the 100- meter dash finals with a time of 11.27. The two helped the Huskies finish fifth among the 13 teams with 88.50 points. Rensselaer won the meet with 141 points, followed by Bates College with 132.50 points, Tufts with 104.50 and Boston University with 94. The Huskies travel to Fitchburg (Mass.) Southern Maine Fifth at Snowflake Classic Justin Vigeant Sets School Record in Winning 200 Meters
MEDFORD, Mass. -- University of Southern Maine freshman Justin Vigeant (Wells, Maine) set a school record en route to winning the 200 meters Saturday at the Snowflake Classic and helped the Huskies to a fifth place finish among the 13 teams competing. The meet was held at the Dussault Track and Field Complex on the campus of Tufts University. Vigeant covered the 200 meters in a time of 22.34 seconds to win the event by 0.29 seconds, and break the previous USM record of 22.48 set last spring by Derek Murchie. Vigeant also placed third in the 100 meters posting a time of 11.27 in the finals. Classmate Tim Even (Stoneham, Maine/Fryeburg Academy), racing for the first time outdoors, won the 800 meters with a time of 1:58.66. He was the only competitor among the 56 in the event who ran under two minutes. Senior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) was third in the 200 meters with his time of 22.68. Mercer also ran the anchor leg of the Huskies 4 x 400-meter relay team that placed second with a time of 3:28.68. Others in the relay included freshman LT Sierra (Leeds, Maine/Leavitt Area), Even, and sophomore Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.). Freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) posted a third place finish in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:21.90. Huskies Open Outdoor Season at NU Husky Spring Invitational
DEDHAM, Mass. -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley), competing in his first event since the NCAA Division III cross country championship this past November, posted a second place finish in the 5,000 meters to highlight the University of Southern Maine men's outdoor track and field team's season opening performances Saturday at the Northeastern University Husky Spring Invitational. Jasud, who missed the entire indoor season, circled the Solomon Track in a time of 15 minutes, 23.24 seconds to finish less than two seconds behind race winner Alexander Battaglino. Freshman Erich Nuets (Portland, Maine/Deering) also posted a top ten finish coming home 10th with a time of 15:53.67. Some other top performances in the non-team-scoring event included junior Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) finishing fifth in the 200 meters with a time of 23.30, and freshman Ian Golder (South Portland, Maine) and sophomore Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) placing sixth and seventh in the 400 meters with times of 53.18 and 53.68, respectively. Freshman Ben Manning (Jericho, Vt./Mount Mansfield Union) came home fifth in the 800 meters with his time of 2:04.13, and classmate LT Sierra (Leeds, Maine/Leavitt Area) was two spots further back clocking a time of 2:04.97. Freshman John Vallo (Beacon, N.Y.) was 10th in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32:59.57. Senior Greg Voner (Dresden, Maine/Hall-Dale) and junior Dan Pontbriand (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little) earned top five finishes in the 3,000- meter steeplechase with times of 11:23.84 and 11:31.70. In the field events, senior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) placed seventh in the shot put with a heave of 12.87 meters (42-2 3/4) and 11th in the javelin with a best throw of 48.82 meters (160-2). The Huskies will be back in action next Saturday (10:30 a.m.) when they travel to Medford, Mass., to participate in the Tufts University Snowflake Classic.
