Southern Maine Holds off Maine Maritime
GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine received goals from
five players, including the game-winner from freshman midfield Kurt Gagnon
(Hollis, Maine) midway through the third quarter, as the Huskies posted a 5-3
triumph over the visiting Maine Maritime Academy Mariners in the Huskies' home
opener Wednesday afternoon at Paula D. Hodgdon Field.
For the second time in as many outings on the young spring campaign, the
Huskies were forced to contend with a driving snowstorm, which severely limited
traction on the natural grass playing surface.
With the score tied at 1-1 through the first quarter of play, the Huskies
received second quarter goals from sophomore defenseman Wade Ward (Gorham,
Maine) and freshman attack Matt Butler (Barnstable, Mass.) to take a 3-1
advantage into the second half.
The teams traded goals in the third quarter, as senior attack John Shaw
scored the Mariners' second goal, while Gagnon countered with the eventual game-
winner for the Huskies.
After the Mariners pulled to within 4-3 on a goal by freshman attack Peter
Vander Hoek midway through the third, the Huskies received a late insurance goal
from senior midfielder Dan Trevett (Burlington, Mass.) to account for the 5-3
final.
Freshman goalie Frank Leclair (York, Maine) turned aside 15 shots as the
Huskies improved to 2-0 overall, while Maine Maritime slipped to 1-2.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday, when it takes on Centenary
in the opening round of the Manhattanville Tournament.

of Southern Maine Huskies to a 7-5 season-opening triumph over the host Emerson
College Lions, Monday afternoon at Sartori Stadium in East Boston, Mass.
The game was played in a persistent snow storm, which limited visibility
and resulted in unsteady footing. However, the Huskies overcame the adverse
weather conditions to take an early lead which they never surrendered.

attack Kurt Gagnon (Hollis, Maine). Sophomore midfielder T.J. Bell (Farmington,
