Southern Maine's Haggerty and Hutchinson Honored By Little East
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) and head coach
Scott Hutchinson of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor track
and field team each earned prestigious end-of-the-season honors from the Little
East Conference that were announced today.
Haggerty was named the conference's Field Athlete of the Year, while
Hutchinson was selected Coach of the Year in a vote by his peers.
A four-year member of the men's track and field team, Haggerty established
himself as one of the top competitors in the pole vault in New England. In
2008, Haggerty earned Division III All-New England and All-ECAC honors,
finishing second and eighth respectively at those meets. At the New England
Alliance and Little East Conference championships, Haggerty defended his title
for the fourth straight year clearing 4.57 meters (15-0). The winner in six of
the 12 meets he entered, Haggerty was named the Little East Conference Field
Athlete of the Week twice during the season.
In his third season with the Huskies, Hutchinson directed his team to a
program-best fifth place finish at the ECAC Division III Championships, besting
the 2007 squad's eighth place result. He guided USM to a second place finish in
the New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships as four
individual athletes won five events. Hutchinson also guided the team to program
best finishes at the New England Division III Championships (seventh) and the
NEIcAAA Championships (11th).
During the 2007-2008 indoor season, the Huskies also captured their first-
ever Maine State Championship, defeating second place Bowdoin College by 26
points. Hutchinson's athletes also achieved in the classroom as seven of the
Huskies' indoor track and field team members earned LEC All-Academic honors.
Hutchinson also was named the 2007 Little East Conference Men's Cross Country
Coach of the Year.

Southern Maine Finishes Best-Ever Fifth at ECAC Championships
BOSTON -- The University of Southern Maine men’s indoor track and field
team finished a best-ever fifth at the 2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference
(ECAC) Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships held at Harvard
University. The two-day event concluded Saturday.
The Huskies garnered 28 total points to finish fifth behind champion St.
Lawrence University (69 points), Moravian College (59 points), Nazareth College
(38 points) and Tufts University (35 points). The Huskies previous best finish
was eighth place in last year.
In Saturday’s competition, the Huskies picked up six points when junior
Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) placed third in the 500 meters with his time of 1
minute, 6.24 seconds.
Mercer also combined with senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), freshman
Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) to earn a
fifth place finish and four points in the 4 x 440-yard relay with a combined
time of 3:23.32.
Sawyer picked up two points by finishing seventh in the 400 meters with a
season-best time of 49.77.
In other events Saturday, Murchie placed 15th in the 200 meters with a time
of 22.81, Gobbi placed 17th in the 400 meters turning in a time of 50.98, and
freshman Sam Bennett (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) had a personal-best time
in the 1,000 meters of 2:35.69 to place 13th.
Southern Maine, tied for fourth after Friday’s events, earned 16 points the
first day when seniors Curtis and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union)
placed first and fourth in the 5,000, respectively, and senior Adam Haggerty
(Hermon, Maine) finished eighth in the pole vault.
The Wheeler brothers are provisionally qualified in the 5,000 for the NCAA
Division III National Championships next weekend at Ohio Northern University.
They will wait until Monday to hear if they have made the field.

Curtis Wheeler Wins 5,000 at ECAC Div. III Championships
BOSTON -- University of Southern Maine senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby,
Vt./North Country Union) won the 5,000 meters Friday afternoon in the first day
of competition at the 2008 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division
III Championships being held at Harvard University.
Wheeler, who also won the 5,000 at last weekend's NEIcAAA Championships,
covered the distance in a time of 14 minutes, 42.93 seconds to win the event by
nearly 15 seconds over his nearest competitor. He is currently ranked 14th in
the nation among Division III runners qualified for the NCAA Division III
National Championships. The field for the NCAA meet will be announced Monday.
Wheeler's twin brother, Nick, was in a three-battle for the runner-up spot
before finishing fourth with a time of 14:58.20.
Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) picked up All-ECAC honors in the pole
vault finishing eighth after clearing 4.40 meters (14-5 1/4). Sophomore John
Davis (Westbrook, Maine) tied for 12th in the pole vault with an effort of 4.25
meters (13-11 1/4).
Southern Maine is tied for fourth in the team scoring after day one with 16
points. Tufts University leads the meet with 28 points, followed by St.
Lawrence University with 23 points, M.I.T. with 20 points and Southern Maine and
Brockport State.
Competition resumes Saturday morning at 9:00 a.m. The Huskies have six
individuals and two relays scheduled to compete.

4 x 400 Relay Sets School Record at NEIcAAA Championships
Huskies Finish Best-Ever 11th in Final Team Standings
BOSTON -- The University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field
team received a school record-setting performance from its 4 x 400-meter relay
team Saturday to finish 11th overall at the New England Intercollegiate Amateur
Athletic Association (NEIcAAA) Indoor Track and Field Championships held at the
Track and Tennis Center on the campus of Boston University.
The Huskies picked up four points with the 4 x 400 relay's fifth place
result to finish the meet in 11th place with 20 points. The 11th place finish
was the best in the history of the program.
Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.),
freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine)
combined for a time of 3 minutes, 18.92 seconds to break their previous record
of 3:21.85, set in January on the same track, by nearly three seconds. The
quartet's time was just 0.42 seconds shy of the NCAA provisional qualifying
standard of 3:18.50.
In Friday's competition, the Huskies picked up 16 points as the seniors
Curtis and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) finished one-three in
the 5,000 meters. Curtis won the event with a school record time of 14:37.99
while Nick turned in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:45.02.
In other highlights from Friday, Sawyer lowered his school record in the
800 meters with a time of 1:55.25 in his trials race. He was 12th overall. He
set the old mark of 1:56.35 six days ago at the New England Division III
Championships. Murchie knocked 0.06 seconds off his previous 200-meter record
time, set in February 2006, crossing the line in 22.68.

Curtis Wheeler Sets School Record, Wins 5K at NEIcAAA Championships
Jimmy Sawyer (800), Derek Murchie (200) Set School Records
BOSTON -- University of Southern Maine senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby,
Vt./North Country Union) set a school record in the 5,000 meters Friday to win
the event at the 2008 New England Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association
(NEIcAAA) Indoor Championships highlighting the Huskies' performances at the
two-day meet being held the Track and Tennis Center on the campus of Boston
University.
The Huskies received two other school record-setting performances in the
first day of competition. Junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) lowered the
standard in the 800 meters and senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) set a new
mark in the 200 meters.
Wheeler became the second athlete in the history of the men's indoor track
and field program to win an NEIcAAA title as he covered the 5,000 meters in a
time of 14 minutes, 37.99 seconds. He broke the previous school record of
14:40.58 set by Mike Bunker in January 2006. He joins Trey Gadbois, who won the
triple jump at the 2005 championships, on the list of NEIcAAA champions.
Wheeler's twin brother, Nick, placed third in the 5,000 with a personal-
best time of 14:45.02. It was the first time in his career that he has run a
sub-15 minute 5,000.

Haggerty Named Little East Conference Field Athlete of the Week

of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor track and field team has been recognized
by the Little East Conference as the Field Athlete of the Week for his
performance at the New England Division III Indoor Track and Field Championship
held this past Saturday at Tufts University in Malden, Mass.
This week's honor marks the second time this season that Haggerty has been
awarded the conference's weekly accolade.
Competing in the pole vault, Haggerty was the top individual finisher for
Southern Maine at the New England Division III Championships. Clearing 4.40
meters (14-5 1/4), Haggerty placed second in the event to help Southern Maine
post its best-ever finish at the meet, earning seventh place. The Huskies
finish was their third straight top ten finish and fifth all-time. The Huskies
previously placed eighth in 2000, 2004 and 2006.
Southern Maine returns to competition next Friday and Saturday (February
29, March 1) when it travels to Boston University for the NEIcAAA Championships.

Southern Maine Finishes Best-Ever Seventh at NE Division III Meet
MEDFORD, Mass. -- Helped by school record-setting performances by junior
Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) and the 4 x 800-meter relay team, the University of
Southern Maine men's indoor track and field team posted a best-ever seventh
place finish at the New England Division III Championships held Saturday at
Tufts University.
The Huskies finish was their third straight top ten finish and fifth all-
time, and surpassed the eighth place finishes in 2000, 2004 and 2006 as the best
in the program's history.
Sawyer, the school record holder at 400 meters, turned in a time of
1-minute, 56.35 seconds to place fifth in the 800 meters. He broke the previous
mark of 1:56.72 set by Darryl Whitney in February 2002.
The 4 x 800 relay combination of freshman Sam Bennett (Gray, Maine/Gray-New
Gloucester), sophomore Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and seniors
Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) and Curtis Wheeler (Derby,
Vt./North Country Union) cross the line in 8:04.34, breaking the old mark of
8:05.63 set in March 2001. The quartet finished sixth.
The top individual finisher for USM was senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon,
Maine) who placed second in the pole vault with an effort of 14-5 1/4.
Sophomore John Davis (Westbrook, Maine) also scored in the pole vault taking
seventh place by clearing 13-11 1/4.
In one of the more exciting races of the day, Sawyer combined with senior
Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) and freshman
Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) to place third in the 4 x 400-meter relay with a
time of 3:24.67. The top three teams were separated by just 0.63 seconds.
Gobbi also scored in the 400 meters coming home in sixth place in 51.03.
Wheeler earned a fifth place finish in the mile with his time of 4:16.17 while
his twin brother, Nick, was fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:10.32.
Tufts edged out Williams College for the team title, 118-106. Rounding out
the top five teams were the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with 101
points, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy with 70.50 and Trinity with 64. Southern
Maine scored 35 points.
The Huskies return to competition next Friday and Saturday (February 29,
March 1) when they travel to Boston University for the NEIcAAA Championships.

Wheeler Named Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union)
of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor track and field team
has been named the Little East Conference (LEC) Track Athlete of the Week for
the week ending February 17. It is the second time this season that Wheeler has
earned the weekly honor. He was previously named the LEC Track Athlete of the
Week on January 28.
Wheeler won the 1,000 and 3,000-meter titles this past Saturday at the
Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships hosted by USM at
the Costello Sports Complex field house. Wheeler crossed the finish line in the
1,000-meter run with a time of 2-minutes, 32.41 seconds, then came back to claim
the 3,000-meter championship with a time of 8:50.06.
The New England Alliance Championship features 11 schools from the Little
East Conference and Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC).
USM finished second at the meet 131.50 points behind Keene State College which
captured the championships with 140 points.
The Huskies return to action this Friday and Saturday (February 22-23) at
the New England Division III Championship hosted by Tufts University.

Southern Maine Second at Alliance and LEC Championships
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union)
won two events to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor
track and field team to a second place finish at the New England Alliance and
Little East Conference Championships Saturday held at USM's Costello Sports
Complex field house in Gorham.
In the Alliance meet, which featured 11 schools from the Little East
Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference, Keene State
edged Southern Maine 140-131.50. Westfield State College finished third with 79
points, followed by Eastern Connecticut State in fourth with 65 points.
Worcester State College placed fifth with 61.50 points to round out the top
five.
In the Little East championship, Keene State totaled 169 points to best USM
which finished with 148.50 points. Eastern Connecticut placed third with 86.50
points, followed by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in fourth with 62
points, Rhode Island College in fifth with 35 points and the University of
Massachusetts Boston in sixth with seven points. The LEC title was the first
for Keene State since winning the inaugural title in 1999.
Wheeler cruised to victories in the 1,000 and 3,000 meters. Wheeler earned
the top spot in the 3,000 crossing the finish line in 8-minutes, 50.06 seconds,
and took honors in the 1,000 with a time of 2:32.41. Wheeler's pair of first
place finishes were two of six wins by the Huskies in the meet.
Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) won the pole vault for the fourth
straight year clearing 4.57 meters (15-0). Juniors Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine)
and Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) each took top honors in the 400 and 600 meters
respectively. Sawyer defended his crown in 400 with a time of 50.75 seconds.
Mercer bested the field in the 600 turning in a time of 1:22.53 to set school
and meet records.
Mercer and Sawyer were also a part of the Huskies' winning 4 x 400 relay
team along with freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and senior Derek Murchie
(Windham, Maine). Murchie, Mercer, Gobbi and Sawyer combined for a meet record
winning time of 3:25.85.
Murchie earned a second place finish in the 55-meter dash (6.67 seconds)
and third in the 200 meters (23.17) for Southern Maine. Gobbi placed third in
the 400 (51.31) and fifth in the 200 (23.31).
Southern Maine returns to action on Friday and Saturday (February 22-23) at
the New England Division III Championship hosted by Tufts University.

Southern Maine Wins First State Title
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Seniors Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country
Union) and Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) each scored 18 points, earning a first
and second place finish, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's
indoor track and field team to a first place finish at the 2008 Maine State
Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship Saturday evening at Bowdoin College's
Farley Field House in Brunswick, Maine.
Southern Maine earned nine first place finishes along the way to compiling
a total 174 points to win the team title for the first time. Host Bowdoin
College finished second with 148 points, followed by Bates College in third
place with 132 points and Colby College in fourth with 67 points.
Wheeler won the mile run, crossing the finish line in a time of 4-minutes,
17.08 seconds. He later earned a second place finish in the 800-meter run with
a time of 1:56.89.
Murchie excelled in the sprint events, winning the 55-meter dash in a time
of 6.66, and then cruising to a second place mark in the 200-meter dash with a
time of 23.32. The Huskies took second, third and fourth place in the 200-meter
dash as Murchie was followed by freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and
junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) in third and fourth place respectively.
Gobbi finished in 23.30, while Mercer turned in a time of 23.36.
Mercer won the 600-meter event with a school record time of 1:22.57,
breaking his old mark of 1:23.09 set last weekend.
Southern Maine also received strong performances from seniors Nick Wheeler
(Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine), junior Jimmy
Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) and sophomore David Quigley (Westbrook, Maine). All four
athletes earned top honors in their events totaling 40 points for the Huskies.
Sawyer edged out Gobbi in the 400-meter dash for a first place finish
clocking a time of 50.54. Gobbi took second with a time of 51.00. In the
grueling 5000-meter run, Nick Wheeler easily took a first place mark,
outdistancing his nearest competitor by seven and half seconds to finish in at
time of 15:17.53.
In field events, Haggerty and Quigley each won their events. Haggerty
placed first in the pole vault clearing 4.49 meters (14-8 3/4), while Quigley
won the triple jump with a leap of 13.25 meters (43-5 3/4) and the high jump by
clearing 1.86 meters (6-1 1/4).
The Huskies also picked up a win in the 4 x 400-meter relay with a time of
3:25.75.
Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it hosts
the Little East Conference and New England Alliance Championships at the
Costello Sports Complex Field House.

Mercer and Haggerty Earn Little East Conference Weekly Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) and junior Doug
Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor
track and field team have earned recognition from the Little East Conference for
their outstanding performances at the USM Coed Invitational this past Saturday.
Haggerty was named the LEC Field Athlete of the Week while Mercer was
selected the conference Track Athlete of the Week. This is the fourth time in
his career that Haggerty has been honored as the LEC Field Athlete of the Week.
This is the first time Mercer, who transferred to USM this year from the
University of New Hampshire, has been honored by the LEC.
Competing in the pole vault, Haggerty earned a first place finish by
clearing 15-4. Haggerty's vault was just an inch shy of the NCAA Division III
provisional qualifying standard of 15-5. Haggerty dominated the competition as
his closest competitor placed second with a vault of 12-4.
Mercer established a new school record in the 600-meter run. Clocking a
winning time of 1-minute, 23.09 seconds, Mercer bested the previous record of
1:23.43 established two weeks ago by junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine).
The Huskies finished second by three points to Bates College, 174-171,
among the seven teams competing.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (6:00 p.m.) at the State of
Maine Championships hosted by Bowdoin College.

Southern Maine Finishes Second at USM Co-Ed Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H./Laconia) established a
new school record in the 600-meter run to highlight a second place finish by the
University of Southern Maine Huskies at the USM Coed Invitational Saturday at
the Costello Sports Complex field house in Gorham.
Mercer clocked a winning time of 1-minute, 23.09 seconds to set the record,
beating the previous mark of 1:23.43 set two weeks ago (Jan. 19, 2008) by USM
junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) at the Brandeis Invitational. Mercer's
winning time was one of nine first place finishes for the Huskies who were
narrowly edged out by the Bates College Bobcats for the top spot in the seven-
team field, 174-171.
Worcester State finished third with 114 points followed by the University
of Massachusetts Dartmouth in fourth with 77 points. Fitchburg State placed
fifth with 61 points, Emmanuel College placed sixth with 31 points and Gordon
College took seventh place with six points.
Southern Maine's 4 x 400 and 4 x 800-meter relay teams won their respective
events. In the 4 x 800, seniors Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter
Marian), Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and Nick Wheeler
(Derby, Vt./North Country Union), along with freshman Sam Bennett (Gray,
Maine/Gray-New Gloucester), combined to run a time of 8:06.30, finishing just a
second off of the school record time of 8:05.63 set in 2001.
In the 4 x 400, junior Greg Voner (Dresden, Maine/Hall-Dale), freshmen Sean
Lunsted [East Boothbay, Maine/Vacaville (Calif.)] and Corey Gobbi (Haverhill,
Mass.) and senior Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) turned in a time
of 3:30.71, narrowly finishing ahead of the Bates team by five one-hundredths of
a second.
Gobbi also earned a first place finish for the Huskies in the 200-meter
dash with a time of 23.23, while Sawyer won the 800-meter run in a time of
2:00.00, besting his nearest competitor by over four seconds.
In the mile-run, Hopkins led USM to a one-two finish, crossing the finish
line in an outstanding race with a time of 4:23.96. Hopkins finished seven
seconds ahead of his closest competition, sophomore teammate Tyler Jasud
(Rumford, Maine/LaSalle Academy). Jasud also ran a strong race for USM making
up distance in the final lap to jump from third to second place with a time of
4:30.16.
Freshman Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) won the 55-meter hurdles
with a time of 8.25.
Southern Maine also received strong performances in the field events with
first place finishes in the triple jump and pole vault. Freshman Nate Fogell
(Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) won the triple jump with a leap of 42-3. In
the pole vault, senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) led the field clearing 15-
4. Haggerty's vault was an inch shy of the NCAA Division III provisional
qualifying standard of 15-5.

Curtis Wheeler Named LEC Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union)
of the University of Southern Maine men's indoor track and field team has been
selected by the Little East Conference as its Male Track Athlete of the Week for
the week of January 21-27.
Competing at the Terrier Invitational held at Boston University this past
weekend, Wheeler finished eighth overall (first among Division III competitors)
in the 5,000 meters with an NCAA Division III Championships provisional
qualifying time of 14 minutes, 45.44 seconds.
Wheeler is the third USM athlete to be honored this season. He joins
junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) who was selected as the LEC Track Athlete of
the Week for the previous week and freshman Nick Phillips (Portland, Maine) who
was named Field Athlete of the Week back in December. This is the second time
in his career that Wheeler has been named the LEC indoor track and field track
athlete of the week.
The Huskies will be in action this Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at the USM Field

Southern Maine Competes at Boston University Terrier Invitational
Curtis Wheeler Provisionally Qualifies for NCAA Championships
BOSTON -- Senior Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union)
provisionally qualified for the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championships
with a standout performance in the 5000-meter run to highlight a strong
performance by the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor track and
field team Saturday afternoon at the 2008 Terrier Invitational hosted by Boston
University in Boston.
The event was a non-scoring open invitational that included competitors
from NCAA Division I, II and III institutions.
Wheeler clocked a time of 14 minutes, 45.44 seconds to place eighth overall
and provisionally qualify for the NCAA championships which will be held March
14-15 at Ohio Northern University.
Senior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) and Wheeler's twin
brother, Nick, also had strong performances in the 5000 setting personal records
after crossing the finish line in 15:09.12 and 15:09.22 respectively. Sophomore
Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) clocked a time of 15:35.55.
Hopkins, Nick Wheeler and Jasud each qualified for the New England Division III
Championships and ECAC Division III Championships.
The Huskies also received a standout performance from their 4 x 400-meter
relay team. Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), junior Doug Mercer (Laconia,
N.H./Dartmouth), freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) and junior Jimmy Sawyer
(Gorham, Maine) combined to win their heat race (10th overall) and set a school
record in the process with their combined time of 3:21.85. Southern Maine's
performance eclipsed the former school record of 3:24.43 set on February 25,
2006, at the NEIcAAA Championships at Boston University.
Murchie, Sawyer, Mercer and Gobbi also had fine days in their individual
sprinting events. Murchie clocked a time of 22.76 in the 200-meter dash, just
two one-hundredths of a second away from tying his personal best and USM record
in the event of 22.74. Murchie also turned in a time of 6.71 in the 55-meter
dash trials. Sawyer, Mercer and Gobbi all competed in the 400-meter dash.
Sawyer turned in a time of 50.21, and was followed by Mercer with a time of
50.31, while Gobbi crossed the finish line in 51.42.
Southern Maine returns to action on February 2 (1:00 p.m.) when it co-hosts
the USM Coed Invitational at the Costello Sports Complex.

Sawyer Named Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) of the University of
Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor track and field team has been named the
Little East Conference Male Track Athlete of the Week for the week of January
14-20.
Sawyer is the second USM men's indoor track and field athlete to earn a
conference weekly honor during the 2007-2008 season. Freshman Nick Phillips
(Portland, Maine) was named the Field Athlete of the Week back in December.
This is the third time in his career that Sawyer has earned Track Athlete of the
Week honors.
An All-ECAC performer and Little East Conference champion in the 400-meter
dash last season, Sawyer won the 600-meter race Saturday at the Reggie Poyau
Memorial Invitational held at Brandeis University. In the process, he set the
school record with a time of 1-minute, 23.43 seconds and qualified for the 2008
ECAC Championships in March. Sawyer broke the previous mark of 1:23.50 set by
Nick Macklin in February 2005.
The Huskies finished second at the meet on the strength of four first place
finishes and 18 top-seven finishes to earn 108.33 points.
Southern Maine returns to action this Friday and Saturday (January 25-26)
at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University. Events begin at 4:00 p.m.
on Friday and resume at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.

Southern Maine Finishes Second at Reggie Poyau Memorial Meet
WALTHAM, Mass. -- Seniors Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter
Marian) and Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) each ran ECAC
Division III Championship qualifying times in the one-mile run, placing first
and second respectively, to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's
indoor track and field team to a second place finish at the Reggie Poyau
Memorial Meet hosted by Brandeis University in Waltham, Mass., Saturday
afternoon.
USM finished with 108.33 points on the strength of four first place
finishes and 18 top-seven finishes in the meet. Bowdoin College won the meet
with 130 points. Worcester Polytechnic Institute scored 103.50 points to place
third, while host Brandeis University placed fourth in the 11-team meet with
103.33 points.
Hopkins crossed the finish line first in the mile with a time of 4-minutes,
20.22 seconds, while Wheeler placed second on in a time of 4:20.36. Wheeler's
twin brother, Nick, placed sixth in the event clocking a time of 4:27.77.
Junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine) won the 600 in a school-record time of
1:23.43, qualifying for the ECAC Championships in March. Sawyer broke the
previous mark of 1:23.50 set by Nick Macklin in February 2005.
Freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) earned a first place finish in the
400-meter dash with a time of 51.64. Junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) placed
seventh in the event with a time of 54.30.
Senior Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) won the 800 in a time
of 2:02.44, narrowly edging Mike Stone of Brandeis who placed second in a time
of 2:02.67.
In field events sophomore David Quigley (Westbrook, Maine) and freshman
Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) earned key points for USM.
Quigley tied for second in the high jump, clearing 1.80 meters (5-10 3/4) and
placed fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 12.83 meters (42-1 1/4). Fogell
earned a sixth in the high jump with a jump of 1.80 meters and seventh in the
triple jump with an effort of 12.44 meters (40-9 3/4)
Southern Maine returns to action next Friday (4:00 p.m.) and Saturday
(11:00 a.m.) at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University.

Southern Maine Wins Bowdoin Invitational
BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor
track and field team parlayed seven first place finishes into a first place
finish among the four teams competing Saturday afternoon in the 2008 Bowdoin
College Invitational at Farley Fieldhouse in Brunswick, Maine.
Southern Maine scored 128 points and was followed by host Bowdoin College
in second place with 97 points. Brandeis University totaled 66 points to finish
third, and Connecticut College rounded out the team scoring with 51 points in
fourth place.
Individually, seniors Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine), Curtis Wheeler
(Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine), junior Doug
Mercer (Laconia, N.H.) and freshmen Mason Shepard (Portland, Maine/Deering) and
Nate Fogell (Alton Bay, N.H./Prospect Mountain) each won an event. The Huskies
4 x 400-meter relay team also claimed first place.
Murchie won the 55-meter dash finals in a time of 6.69 seconds after
running a qualifying time of 6.77 seconds. Murchie also placed second in the
200-meter dash with a time of 23.33 seconds, finishing right behind Mercer who
won the event by crossing the finish line in 23.10 seconds.
Shepard helped USM to a 1-2-3 finish in the 55-meter hurdles with a winning
time of 8.56 seconds, followed by freshman Evan Davis (Fair Haven, Vt./Fair
Haven Union) in second (8.60) and junior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) in
third (8.62).
Coming off of a phenomenal cross country season, Wheeler won the grueling
3,000-meter run in a time of 8:40.43 as the Huskies claimed the first, third and
fourth place spots in the event. Wheeler's twin brother, Nick, placed third in
a time 8:43.57, and senior Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian)
earned fourth place with a time of 8:49.44. All three posted qualifying times
for the ECAC Division III Championships in March.
Fogell and Haggerty helped put points on the board for the Huskies in the
field events. Fogell won the high jump clearing 1.82 meters (5-11 1/2).
Haggerty dominated his competition in the pole vault with a vault of 4.35 meters
(14-3 1/4) beating his nearest competitor by just under four feet. Haggerty's
vault also qualified him for the ECAC Championship. Fogell also earned a third
place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 12.83 meters (42-1 1/4).
Southern Maine returns to action next Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it
competes in the Reggie Poyau Invitational at Brandeis University in Waltham,
Mass.

Phillips Named Little East Conference Track Athlete of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Nick Phillips (Portland, Maine) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor track and field team has been
named the Little East Conference Male Field Athlete of the Week for the week
ending December 9. The award is the first of the season for the LEC.
In his first collegiate meet, Phillips provisionally qualified for the NCAA
Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships in March with his
winning leap of six feet, seven inches in the high jump to highlight a strong
showing by the Huskies at USM's Preseason Invitational this past Saturday at the
USM Field House.
Phillips earned one of nine first place finishes for the Huskies as they
won their season-opening event tallying 66 points. Bowdoin College placed
second with 43 points and was followed by St. Joseph's College with nine points.
Southern Maine is off until January 12 (1:00 p.m.) when it travels to
Brunswick, Maine, for the Bowdoin College Invitational.

Southern Maine Makes Strong Showing at USM Preseason Invitational
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Nick Phillips (Portland, Maine) provisionally
qualified for the NCAA Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships
in March with his winning leap of six feet, seven inches in the high jump to
highlight an impressive showing by the University of Southern Maine Huskies
men's indoor track and field team Saturday afternoon in the annual Preseason
Invitational at the Costello Sports Complex Field House.
Phillips was one of nine first place finishes for the Huskies as they took
first place in the three-team event. Southern Maine scored 66 points followed
by Bowdoin College with 43 points and St. Joseph's College registered 9 points.
Senior Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) had a standout day for USM placing
first in the 55-meter dash and tying for first place in the 200-meter dash.
Murchie clocked a time of 6.68 seconds in the 55-meter dash and ran neck-and-
neck with Bowdoin College junior Damon Hall-Jones (Milton, Mass.) in the 200-
meter dash with a time of 23.38 seconds to tie.
Senior Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine) won the pole vault clearing 4.41
meters (14-6) as USM placed one-two in the event. Sophomore Corey Michaud
(Augusta, Maine/Cony) earned second place with a vault of 3.36 meters (12-0).
Also earning a first-place finish in the field events was sophomore Jacob
Berube (Spotsylvania, Va.) who claimed the top spot in the long jump with a leap
of 5.98 meters (19-7 1/2). Berube's jump was nearly a foot better of his
nearest competitor Ryan Prescott of St. Joseph's who placed second with a jump
of 18-11 3/4.
Junior Doug Mercer (Laconia, N.H) won the 600-meter run with a time of
1:24.26, while freshman Sean Lunsted [East Boothbay, Maine/Vacaville (Calif.)]
captured first place in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:48.32.
The Huskies' 4 x 400-meter relay and distance medley relay teams also
earned first place honors. Sophomores David Johnson (Cape Neddick, Maine/York)
and Dan Pontbriand (Auburn, Maine/Edward Little), junior Greg Voner (Dresden,
Maine/Hall-Dale) and freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) combined for a
winning time of 3:38.95 in the 4 x 400.
In the DMR, sophomore Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley), junior
Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine), and seniors Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon,
Maine/Maranacook) and Chris Hopkins (Worcester, Mass./St. Peter Marian) turned
in a time of 10:32.59 to win the event.
Southern Maine returns to action in January when it competes at the Bowdoin
Invitational on January 12.

Southern Maine Competes at Northeastern Husky Winter Carnival
BOSTON -- Seniors Derek Murchie (Windham, Maine) and Adam Haggerty
(Hermon, Maine), along with junior Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine), each had top-
ten finishes as the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's indoor track and
field team opened its 2007-08 season Saturday afternoon at the Northeastern Husky
Winter Carnival held at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. The meet was a non-
scoring event.
Murchie placed seventh in the 200-meter dash recording a time of 23.12
seconds. Racing for the first time since the 2005-2006 season, Murchie's time
was less than a second off of his school-record time of 22.74 which he set at
the NEIcAAA Championship on February 24, 2006. The fifth-year senior also
registered the 10th fastest time in the 55-meter dash with a time of 6.68
seconds.
Another USM record holder, Sawyer placed fourth in the 400-meter dash. He
crossed the finish line in a time of 50.32 seconds, a full second faster than
his season-opening time last season. Sawyer owns the Southern Maine record in
the event with a time of 49.17.
Sophomore Jeremy McKeon (Rutland, Vt.) also had a top 20 finish among the
87 sprinters in the 55 meters. McKeon was 19th quickest with his time of 6.80
seconds. Freshman Corey Gobbi (Haverhill, Mass.) was 20th among the 115
competitors in the 200 meters with his time of 23.62 seconds. Gobbi also
finished 15th in the 400 meters with a time of 51.69 seconds.
Haggerty earned a fifth place finish in the pole vault by clearing 4.55
meters (14-11). Haggerty's vault was the best among Division III competitors in
the event, which was won by Albany's Luke Schoen who cleared 5.00-meters (16-4
3/4).
Junior James Spaulding (Lewiston, Maine) was 19th among 56 competitors in
the shot put with a best throw of 11.98 meters (39-3 3/4).
Southern Maine's 4 x 400-meter relay team also faired well, placing seventh
in the event with a time of 3:26.71.
Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) at the Costello
Sports Complex Field House when it hosts its annual Preseason Invitational.
