Marshall, Conter Named to ECAC East All-Star Teams
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior defenseman and team captain Dane Marshall
(Yarmouth, Nova Scotia) of the University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey
team was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's East All-
Star second team that was announced Thursday evening by ECAC commissioner Rudy
Keeling.
Keeling also announced that freshman defenseman Paul Conter (Woodbridge,
Ontario) had been named to the All-Rookie team. The all-star first and second
teams, the all-rookie team and the four major individual awards are voted upon
by the league's head coaches.
This is the fourth consecutive year that Marshall has been recognized by
the league for his standout play. He was a member of the All-Rookie team in
2004-05, a second team all-star in 2005-06 and a first team all-star last
season.
Conter is the first USM rookie to find a spot on the All-Rookie team since
Marshall and classmates Mike Stevens (Dover, N.H.) and Ryan Sullivan (Newton,
Mass.) made the squad.
Marshall played in all 26 games this season and collected 10 assists. The
5-foot-10, 185-pound rearguard set a school record this season for the most
games played in a career, 106. He finished his distinguished career with seven
goals and 59 assists for 66 points and had 132 minutes in penalties.
Conter made an immediate impact on the USM offense from his blue line
position scoring nine goals and passing out 11 assists for 20 points. He was
tied for fourth on the team in points and tied for second in power-play goals
with five. He was the top scoring rookie defenseman, and third overall, in the
league.
The Huskies finished the season with a 14-9-3 overall record and an 8-8-3
mark (fifth place) in league play.

New England College Gets Past Southern Maine 3-2
HENNIKER, N.H. -- Senior Brian Pouliot (Hooksett, N.H.) would score what
would be the game-winner at the 9:11 mark in the third period to lift the New
England College Pilgrims past the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-2,
Friday evening in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Men's East game.
The win snaps a two-game losing streak for the Pilgrims as they improve to
14-7-3 overall and 9-6-3 in the ECAC East. The loss drops the Huskies to 14-7-3
overall and 8-7-3 in ECAC East action.
The two teams would battle evenly through much of the first period as the
Pilgrims would hold the edge in shots, out shooting the Huskies just 10-8. It
would be Southern Maine that would strike first as sophomore Chris Travis
(Scituate, Mass.) would score his 12th goal of the season assisted by senior
Mike Stevens (Dover, N.H.) and junior Kyle Smith (Auburn, Maine) with just under
four minutes remaining in the first period.
NEC would tie the game early in the second period as Pouliot would fire in
a slap shot past USM junior goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine), assisted by
sophomore Mark Ehl (N. Vancouver, B.C.), just 1:53 into the second period. The
Pilgrims would take the lead at the 12:09 mark in the second as Ehl would score
his team-leading 20th goal of the season sending the Pilgrims into the second
intermission up 2-1.
Southern Maine junior Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, Mass.) would take advantage of
a Huskies' power play in the opening minutes of the third period to net his 12th
goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2 at the 4:13 mark.
NEC would continue to hold the edge in shots throughout the third period
with the Pilgrims out shooting the Huskies a total of 42-21 on the evening.
NEC's Pouliot would come up huge, scoring what would eventually become the game-
winner at the 9:11 mark putting the Pilgrims up 3-2. The Huskies would have a
power-play opportunity late in the period, but the Pilgrim defense would prove
too tough holding on for the 3-2 victory.
Picking up the win in goal for New England College was sophomore Ron Baia
(West Haven, Conn.) who finished with 19 saves. Gilbert finished with an
impressive 39 saves.
Southern Maine will close the regular season on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) at

Southern Maine Snaps Winless Skid, Downs UMass Boston 6-3
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, Mass.) led the scoring

game winless skid by defeating the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons,
6-3, in an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East men's ice hockey game

The win was the Huskies' first since January 8 when they defeated
Framingham State, 6-5. Since then, the Huskies had gone 0-3-2 prior to
Saturday's victory. The Huskies are now 11-3-3 overall and 5-3-3 in the league.
The Beacons dropped their second straight game to fall to 8-8-1 overall and

Gordon tied the game at 3-3 at 13:43 of the second on with a great
individual effort. The junior forward picked up a pass from freshman Jon Rutt
(Scarborough. Maine) in his own zone, skated down the right wing before cutting
in and beating UMB sophomore goalie Ryan Donovan (Rexford, N.Y.) with a quick
wrist shot for his seventh goal of the season.
The Huskies scored twice in the next five minutes to take a 5-3 advantage
into the locker room. Sophomore Chris Travis (Scituate, Mass.) tallied at
16:23, and senior Mike Stevens (Dover, N.H.) lit the lamp at 18:41.
The teams traded goals in the first period as Rutt gave the Huskies an
early lead before freshman Eric Tufman (Abington, Penn.) equalized for the

span of 1:25 by freshman Matt Atsoff (Macomb, Mich.) and sophomore Anthony
Casmano (Wheaton, Ill.) to take a 3-2 lead.

USM received goals from six different players. Senior Dane Marshall (Yarmouth,
Nova Scotia) had two assists.
Junior goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine) stopped 21 shots, including
12 in the third period, in the USM goal. Donovan made 19 saves for UMB before

GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Mike Venit (Ridley Park, Pa.) scored his second
goal of the game with 5:46 remaining in regulation to give the Babson College
Beavers a 5-4 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an
Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East ice hockey game Friday night at
the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the third straight for the 14th-ranked Beavers who improve to
11-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in league play. The 11th-ranked Huskies, whose winless
skid stretches to five games (0-3-2), fall to 10-3-3 overall and 4-3-3 in league
games.
Entering the third period down 4-3, the Beavers put the clamps on the
Huskies offense, limiting the home side to just five shots on goal while putting
11 shots on target. Junior Pat McLaughlin (Berlin, Mass.) tied the game at
10:13 with the Beavers' third power-play goal of the game. Four minutes later,
Venit, trailing the play through the left wing circle, took a perfect back door
pass from McLaughlin cutting behind the net and beat USM senior goalie Ryan
Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) to the short side post from 20 feet.
Venit opened the scoring with his first goal at 6:45 of the first period.
The Huskies equalized at 9:00 as junior Eric Morgani (Reading, Mass.) tapped in
a feed from junior Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, Mass.). The Huskies took a 2-1 edge
at 16:10 when sophomore Pat Noonan (Burlington, Mass.) potted the first of his
two goals.

lead with a power-play marker at 2:43 as Gordon beat Babson junior goalie Skylar
Nipps (Orlando, Fla.) down low.
Sophomore Shane Farrell (West Warwick, R.I.) got the Beavers second power-
play goal at 13:32, off an assist from Venit, to tie game. The Huskies took
their final lead when Noonan tallied his second goal 66 seconds later.
A big key to the Beavers' victory came in the third period when they killed
off a five-minute major penalty without allowing the Huskies a shot on goal.
Sullivan finished the night making 29 saves. Nipps was credited with 17
saves.

Southern Maine, Wesleyan Play to 2-2 Tie
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Sam Robinson (Winchester, Mass.) scored a
power-play goal five seconds into the third period to give the Wesleyan
University Cardinals a 2-2 overtime tie with the seventh-ranked University of
Southern Maine Huskies in an ECAC East-NESCAC inter-league game Saturday at the
USM Ice Arena.
The tie gave the Cardinals (4-5-1; 2-3-1) three out of a possible four
points on the weekend. They defeated Salem State College, 3-2, Friday night.
The Huskies (10-1-2; 4-1-2) were able to salvage one point in the standings with
the draw after suffering their first loss of the season at the hands of Trinity
College Friday night.
Robinson took the opening face-off to start the third period, stepped
around the USM center and let a shot go from the blue line that eluded USM
senior goalie Ryan Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) to tie the game.
From that point, Sullivan and Wesleyan junior goalie Mike Palladino
(Litchfield, Conn.) slammed the door on every scoring bid to preserve the tie.
Palladino came up with the save of the game in overtime when he stoned junior
Dan Gordon (Lynnfield, Mass.) on a 2-on-1 with a left leg save. Sullivan
finished the game with 28 saves while Palladino was credited with 29 stops.
Wesleyan took an early 1-0 lead on a goal at 3:08 of the opening period by
junior Brent Winship (Manhattan Beach, Calif.). Robinson picked up the lone
assist on the play.
Rookie forward Jon Rutt (Scarborough, Maine) tied the game at 7:47, set up
by freshman Zach Joy (Dover, N.H.) and junior Josh Giordani (Quincy, Mass.).
Southern Maine took its only lead of the game in the second period when
freshman Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) blasted a shot from 30 feet out past
Palladino for a power-play goal.
The Huskies hit the road next weekend to play at Amherst College on Friday
(7:00 p.m.) and at Hamilton College on Saturday (3:00 p.m.). Wesleyan will be

Trinity Hands Southern Maine First Loss, 3-1
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Ross Grubin (Newington, Conn.) broke a 1-1 tie
with 12:41 to play to help the Trinity College Bantams defeat the seventh-ranked
University of Southern Maine Huskies, 3-1, in an ECAC East-NESCAC inter-league
game Friday night at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the second straight for the Bantams who improve to 6-3-1
overall and 2-2-1 in league play. The Bantams, who have never lost to the
Huskies, are now 12-0-1 in the 13-year history of the series.
Southern Maine, off to the best start in school history, suffered its first
loss in 12 games, falling to 10-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 league play. USM dropped
out of a tie for first place and into third place in the ECAC East standings.
Grubin came in hard off the right wing and lifted a 10-foot shot over the
shoulder of USM junior goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine) at 7:19 of the
third period to break the deadlock. Freshman Justin Letizia (Yorktown Heights,
N.Y.) and senior Matthew Crum (Clearwater, Fla.) picked up the assists. The
goal was Grubin's first of the season.
The Bantams iced the decision with an empty-net goal at 19:27 from
sophomore Naoto Hamashima (Tokyo, Japan).
After a scoreless period highlighted by the outstanding goaltending of
Gilbert and Trinity sophomore David Murison (Woodstock, Vt.), the Bantams got on
the board first as junior Riley Hicks (Calgary, Alberta) tallied a power-play
marker at 13:28. Letizia and junior Tom Price (Milton, Mass.) drew the assists.
The Huskies tied the game at the 17:00 mark when freshman Jon Rutt
(Scarborough, Maine) jammed in a rebound from a scrum in front of Murison.
Senior Dane Marshall (Yarmouth, Nova Scotia) had the lone assist.
Murison finished the night with 28 saves. Gilbert registered 35 stops
before being pulled in favor of the extra attacker.
Trinity's penalty killers did an excellent job, thwarting the Southern
Maine power play on all eight short-handed situations.
Southern Maine seeks to rebound from its first loss on Saturday (4:00 p.m.)
when Wesleyan University, a 3-2 winner of Salem State College, comes to the USM

Southern Maine Overcomes Plymouth State 4-2
WATERVILLE VALLEY, N.H. -- Senior Mike Stevens (Dover, N.H.) recorded a
goal and an assist Saturday evening to lead the eighth-ranked University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 4-2, come-from-behind victory over the Plymouth
State University Panthers in a non-conference men’s ice hockey game at the
Waterville Valley Ice Arena.
The Huskies are off to the best start in school history, extending their
unbeaten string to nine games. The Huskies’ 8-0-1 overall record (.944 W-L
pct.) surpasses the 1975-76 team (8-1-0) and 1999-2000 squad (7-0-2) for the
best winning percentage through nine games.
Plymouth State, winless in its last four games (0-3-1), lost its third
straight to slide to 2-4-2 overall. In their last three games, the Panthers
have lost 3-2 in overtime to Nichols College and dropped a pair of 4-2 decisions
to Castleton State College and USM.
Plymouth State started the game strong and scored the only two goals of the
first period. Freshman Bryan Horrigan (Brookfield, Wis.) put the Panthers on
the board six minutes into the game, and classmate Seth McQuade (Manchester,
N.H.) made it 2-0 with a power-play goal at the 10:10 mark. It was the second
goal of the season for both.
Southern Maine got the two goals back in the second period. Freshman Paul
Conter (Woodbridge, Ont.) broke the ice for the Huskies with a power-play goal
at 1:45, and junior Kyle Smith (Auburn, Maine) notched the equalizer at 13:13.
USM dominated the middle frame in shots on goal, 12-3, and the game went to the
third period tied at 2-2.
Stevens, who assisted on Smith’s tying goal, wasted little time in the
third frame to give the Huskies the lead, scoring the eventual game-winner just
41 seconds in. Junior Josh Giordani (Quincy, Mass.) added an insurance goal for
the Huskies at the 5:15 mark to round out the scoring.
PSU came back to have a 13-9 shot advantage in the third period, and USM
finished with a 30-24 margin for the game. Junior Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston,
Maine) stopped 22 pucks to pick up the win for the Huskies, while senior Karl
Helgesson (Lerum, Sweden) made 26 saves in the Panther goal.
Southern Maine is off until January 4 (7:00 p.m.) when it journeys to
Waterville, Maine, for a non-conference game at Colby College. Plymouth State
resumes play on January 6 (8:35 p.m.) when it plays on the road against Becker

Southern Maine Downs Middlebury 3-1
MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Junior goalie Jamie Gilbert (Lewiston, Maine) stopped
30-of-31 shots to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeat the
Middlebury College Panthers, 3-1, in an ECAC East-NESCAC inter-league game
Saturday at Kenyon Arena in Middlebury, Vt.
The win extended the Huskies' season-opening unbeaten streak to six games,
lifting their overall mark to 5-0-1. It was the first time in nine tries that
the Huskies have beaten the Panthers on the road, and the second straight year
that the Huskies have prevailed against the Panthers.
The Panthers, who have won eight NCAA Division III titles in the past 13
seasons and reached the championship game last season, had their two-game
winning streak snapped to fall to 3-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in league games.
The game was a match-up of two teams ranked in the top 15 nationally in
this week's USCHO.com Division III poll. Middlebury came into the game ranked
seventh in this week's poll while Southern Maine was tied for 14th. The win was
the Huskies second against a nationally-ranked team this season as they beat
Norwich University in their season opener.
Gilbert kept the Panthers at bay throughout the first period despite the
Huskies being short-handed five times. The Panthers out shot the Huskies 11-3
in the opening 20 minutes, but were unable to dent Gilbert.
USM's penalty killers did yeoman duty in the game killing all 10 Middlebury
power plays. The Huskies played more than four straight minutes short handed,
including 41 seconds down two men, in the first period. The Huskies also had to
kill three power plays in the final period.
Southern Maine broke the scoreless deadlock at 6:33 of the second period as
junior Kyle Smith (Auburn, Maine) converted a pass from senior Mike Stevens
(Dover, N.H.) for a power-play goal.
Smith picked up his second goal of the game 11 minutes later when he fired
home the rebound of a shot taken by sophomore Chris Travis (Scituate, Mass.).
Travis had been stopped on a breakaway attempt by Middlebury senior goalie Ross
Cherry (Basking Ridge, N.J.), but Smith was in the right spot to follow up for
his fifth goal of the season.
The Huskies lead expanded to 3-0 midway through the third period as
sophomore Pat Noonan (Burlington, Mass.) picked up his second goal in as many
games, set up by freshman Paul Conter (Woodbridge, Ontario) and sophomore Ryan
Jean (Randolph, Maine).
Gilbert lost his bid for a shutout with 2:28 remaining as senior Samuel
Driver (St. Albans, Vt.) beat him with a shot.
The Huskies host Salem State College in their next game on Friday (7:00
p.m.). The Panthers will take nationally-ranked Plattsburgh State at home on
Friday (7:00 p.m.).

unassisted goal with 1:29 remaining in regulation time to give the unbeaten and
nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine Huskies a 4-4 overtime tie with
the Williams College Ephmen in an ECAC East-NESCAC inter-league game Friday

38 seconds later. The goal was his fourth of the season, equaling his total for
the 2006-07 season.
Williams grabbed a 2-0 lead in the opening period on goals by freshman
Brian Malchoff (Avon, Conn.) at 2:37 and sophomore Alex Smigelski (Mt. Lakes,

play goal for USM, one of two man-up goals for the Huskies, at 11:33 to cut the
margin to one. Gordan and Noonan picked up the assists.
Senior goalie Ryan Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) made 30 saves in goal for USM.
Sophomore Marc Pulde (Lexington, Mass.) was busy in the Williams net stopping 46

Dane Marshall Named USM Men's Ice Hockey Captain
Kyle Smith, Mike Stevens to Serve as Assistant Captains
Huskies Open Season This Weekend Hosting Norwich and St. Michael's
GORHAM, Maine -- Veteran University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey
head coach Jeff Beaney announced recently that All-ECAC East senior defenseman
Dane Marshall (Yarmouth, Nova Scotia) will wear the "C" as captain of the men's
ice hockey team for the upcoming 2007-08 season.
Beaney also announced that senior forward Mike Stevens (Dover, N.H.) and
junior forward Kyle Smith (Auburn, Maine) would serve as assistant captains this
season. Marshall served as an assistant captain last season while this is
Stevens and Smith's first time wearing the "A."
The Huskies open the 2007-08 season this weekend with a pair of home games
at the USM Ice Arena. The Huskies will play ECAC East preseason favorite and
defending regular season champion Norwich University in the season opener Friday
night (7:00 p.m.), and St. Michael's College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.).
Marshall is among the top defensemen in the east. He was named to the ECAC
East All-Rookie team in 2004-05, and has been a member of the All-ECAC East team
the past two years. He was a second team selection in 2005-06 and a first team
honoree last season. He also was named to the New England Hockey Writers
Association's ECAC East/NESCAC All-New England team last season. During the
2006-07 campaign, Marshall scored three goals and dished off 15 assists for 18
points in 26 games.
Stevens also was an ECAC East All-Rookie team selection in 2004-05 and has
become one of the top all-around players in the league. He had four goals and
22 assists for 26 points during the 2006-07 season.
Smith is a hard-working winger and one of the team's best penalty killers.
He had seven goals, including a team-leading two short-handed goals, and seven
assists for 14 points in 24 games.
All three players were named to the ECAC East All-Academic Team last
season.
"Marshall is the best returning defenseman in our league," commented
Beaney, who begins his 21st season behind the Huskies' bench needing seven
victories to reach 200 wins for his career. "He is very consistent at both ends
of the ice, and will be a key to one of our power-play units again this season.
His defensive zone play is often overlooked because he is such a contributor in
the offensive end.
"Stevens is one of the most creative players in the league and an excellent
penalty killer. Smith has had two solid seasons, is an excellent penalty killer
and should step up his offense this year," added Beaney.
After this weekend's two home games, the Huskies will be on the road for
four straight contests. The Huskies will face Salve Regina University in the
first round of the Skidmore Tournament on November 24 (5:00 p.m.), and either
Skidmore or Cortland State on November 25 (1:00/4:00 p.m.). The Huskies return
to league play the following weekend traveling to Williams College on November
30 (7:00 p.m.) and Middlebury College on December 1 (4:00 p.m.).

semester portion of the 25-game schedule with a pair of non-league road games at
Suffolk University of December 8 (7:00 p.m.) and Plymouth State University on
December 15 (6:00 p.m.).

The final month of the regular season opens with home games against Colby
on February 1 (7:00 p.m.) and Bowdoin College on February 2 (4:00 p.m.). The
Huskies travel to Skidmore on February 8 (7:00 p.m.) and Castleton State College
