Huskies Come From Behind to Tie Vikings

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman forward Bobby Sloper (Concord, N.H.) scored
the game tying goal with 1:43 left in regulation time as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies overcame a two-goal deficit in the final ten minutes to
forge a 3-3 overtime tie with the Salem State College Vikings in an ECAC East
game Tuesday night at the USM Ice Arena.
The tie keeps the Huskies unbeaten on the season with a 1-0-2 overall
mark. The game was the season opener for the Vikings. Both teams earned a
point in the league standings.
Sloper knocked a rebound past Salem State netminder Lou Mastromarino
(Melrose, Mass.) for his second goal of the season to tie the game.
Mastromarino stopped the original shot from junior forward John Lauziere
(Lewiston, Maine), but kicked the rebound 20 feet out in front and Sloper buried
the shot.
The Vikings broke a 1-1 tie at 5:27 of the third period when junior Silas
Gilbert (St. Albans, Vt.) step around the USM center on a faceoff and beat
sophomore goalie Andrew Dargan (Melrose, Mass.) for an unassisted goal.
Freshman Scott Cooper (Quincy, Mass.) gave the Vikings a 3-1 lead 64 seconds
later when he was sent in on a breakaway by sophomore defenseman Dan Haugh
(South Boston, Mass.).
The Huskies got one goal back at 10:12 when Sloper threaded a pass across
the crease to junior Brett DePetrillo (Haverhill, Mass.) who buried the short
shot for his fourth goal of the season. The goal was the Huskies' second of the
night on the power play.
The teams played over 33 minutes of scoreless, tight-checking hockey
before the Vikings got on the board first. Senior defenseman Jason Vaughn
(Kingston, Mass.), stationed in front of the net, tapped a short rebound past
Dargan while the Vikings enjoyed the man advantage.
Southern Maine tied the game with its first power play goal as senior Andy
Gildart (Portland, Maine) set up sophomore wing Tony Coates (Goose Bay,
Labrador, Nfld.) for a shot from the left point through a screen.
Salem State, which outshot the Huskies 31-17 during the game, including a
4-0 edge in the five-minute overtime, had the best chance to win the game in the
extra session when senior Brett Schaufler's (Marlboro, Mass.) shot in the final
30 seconds hit the left post and slid completely across the crease behind Dargan
before being cleared by the Husky defense.
Dargan finished the game with 28 saves for the Huskies while Mastromarino

Roche Named USM Men's Hockey Captain
Guimond Named Assistant Captain
Huskies Open 1999-2000 Season Hosting Tournament

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior defenseman Darren Roche (Corner Brook,
Newfoundland/ Hebron Academy) of the University of Southern Maine men's ice
hockey team has been named the team's captain for the upcoming 1999-2000 season.
Head coach Jeff Beaney made the announcement.
Beaney also announced that senior forward Jarrod Guimond (Bucksport,
Maine/John Bapst HS) would wear the "A" as an assistant captain this season.
The Huskies open their 1999-2000 season this weekend when they host the
Back Bay Sports Hockey Classic at the USM Ice Arena. The first round games
Friday (November 19) have the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth playing
Manhattanville College at 4:00 p.m. followed by the Huskies taking on Johnson
and Wales University at 7:00 p.m.
The second round games on Saturday have UMass Dartmouth playing Johnson
and Wales at 1:00 p.m., and the Huskies battling Manhattanville at 4:00 p.m.
Roche, a two-year letterman, had five assists in 25 games last season
while serving just 10 minutes in penalties.
"His peers really respect (Roche)," commented Beaney, who takes a 108-171-
9 career record into his 13th season. "He's very disciplined in life, and that
carries over into the locker room and on to the ice. He's a leader in every
sense of being a leader."
Guimond, a three-year letterman and outstanding defensive forward, had his
best offensive season last year scoring six goals and four assists for 10
points.
"Jarrod was a walk-on from a Class B program who has worked very hard to
make himself into the player he is today. He just leads by example. He has a
blue collar approach to the game and does a lot of the dirty little jobs no one
wants. He works 100 percent, day in, day out," said Beaney.
After this weekend's tournament, the Huskies will open their ECAC East
schedule on Tuesday (November 23) when they host Salem State College at 7:00
p.m.
Looking at the opener Friday night, Beaney is looking for an upbeat style.
"I look for us to be a more fun and entertaining team to watch this season.
With our style and the players we have now, we'll be able to do some of the
things we want to do. Things have really been flowing in practice and the guys
are having a blast.
"We have a lot of new players. This weekend will be a good situation (two
non-league games) to begin putting the pieces of the puzzle together."
The remainder of the Huskies' 1999-2000 schedule is as follows: Nov. 27-
28, at Manchester PAL Tournament; Dec. 3, UMass Boston (7:00); Dec. 4, Babson
(7:00); Dec. 7, at Plymouth State (7:00) and Dec. 11, Framingham State (7:00).
