Huskies Shock Bowdoin 5-2
BRUNSWICK, Maine - Freshman forward Brett Kapteina (Stamford, Conn.) scored
the game-winning goal and added an assist to lead the University of Southern Maine
Huskies to a 5-2 upset win over the ninth-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears in an
ECAC Division III men's hockey game Saturday at Dayton Arena in Brunswick, Maine.
With the win the Huskies improve to 12-9-2 overall and 9-7-1 in ECAC action.
Bowdoin dropped just its fourth contest of the season to stand at 14-4-3 and
10-4-3 in the ECAC. It is just the second time in the 11-game history of the
series that Southern Maine has earned the win.
The Huskies scored first to take a 1-0 lead midway through the first period
when senior captain Jon Lounsbury (Winthrop, Mass.) tallied his six goal of the
season at 10:29 off of an assist from Kapteina and junior forward James LeBlanc
(Dorval, Quebec).
The Huskies quickly found themselves ahead 2-0 just 22 seconds into the
second period when senior forward Erik Kent (Newburyport, Mass.) netted his team-
leading 17th goal of the season on a short-handed strike. Five minutes later,
Southern Maine pushed the lead to three following Kapteina's fifth goal of the
season and eventual game-winner off of an assist from sophomore forward Mark
Carragher (Charlottetown, PEI) and Lounsbury.
Bowdoin trimmed the lead to two, scoring its first goal of the game in the
eighth minute of the second frame, as the Polar Bears' sophomore forward Greg
McConnell (Charlottetown, PEI) converted a power-play goal. Southern Maine
answered right back, however, as Carragher banged in a power-play goal of his own
to push the Husky lead back to three at 4-1 through the second period.
Bowdoin opened the third period with a goal from sophomore defenseman Will
Reycraft (Pelham, N.Y.) to trail the Huskies 4-2 with 18 minutes to play, but
Huskies held on for the win behind an insurance goal from sophomore forward Bobby
Siers (Mt. Prospect, Ill.) and sophomore goalie David Beckles' (Stamford, Conn.)

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior Cory Ernst's (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia)
second period goal gave the Colby College Mules a 4-0 lead and it ended up being
the game-winning goal as University of Southern Maine rallied for three goals in
the final period, but it was not enough as the Mules held on for a 4-3 victory

Lounsbury OT Goal Lifts Huskies by Saint Anselm, 3-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Jon Lounsbury (Winthrop, Mass.) scored at 1:48 of
overtime to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a hard-fought 3-2
victory over the Saint Anselm College Hawks in an ECAC East game Saturday
afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win improved USM's record to 11-8-2 overall and 8-6-1 in the conference,
and was the Huskies' seventh in their last 10 games. Saint Anselm, which lost its
second straight overtime game of the weekend, falls to 13-6-1 overall and 8-6-1 in
the conference.
Lounsbury trailed the offensive play of forwards Mark Carragher
(Charlottetown, PEI) and Brett Kapteina (Stamford, Conn.) into the Saint Anselm
zone. When the puck was mishandled in the crease area by senior goalie Jim Merola
(North Providence, R.I.), the streaking Lounsbury was in the right spot to poke
the puck into the net for his fourth goal of the season.
Lounsbury's game-winning goal spoiled a two-goal comeback by the Hawks in the
third period. Trailing 2-0, senior Bostjan Kolaric (Ljubljana, Slovenia) found
the net with a power-play goal to cut the deficit in half at 6:29.
With time running out and Merola headed for the bench in favor of the extra
attacker, Kolaric whipped a shot over the shoulder of USM rookie netminder Ryan
Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) to tie the game with 1:15 remaining to force the extra
session.
Southern Maine built a 2-0 lead in the first period when freshman Mike
Stevens (Dover, N.H.) scored at 6:24 and sophomore Brian Collins (Reading, Mass.)
netted a power-play goal at 18:24.
Sullivan, who finished the game with 34 saves, protected the lead for the
Huskies throughout the second period when Saint Anselm outshot the host team 17-9.
Merola was credited with 30 saves.
Southern Maine hits the road next weekend for games at in-state rivals Colby
College on Friday (7:00 p.m.) and Bowdoin College on Saturday (4:00 p.m.). Saint
Anselm will host Norwich University of Friday (7:00 p.m.) and St. Michael's

Maine, 6-1-1 in its last eight games, had its three-game winning streak stopped to

senior Jeff Van Dyke (Peking, Ill.) to beat USM sophomore goalie David Beckles
(Stamford, Conn.) for his ninth goal of the season.
Sophomore goalie Scott Gray (Pickering, Ontario) protected the lead over the
final 11:26 and made eight of his 25 saves in the final period.
The Pilgrims took a 3-1 lead in the first period as junior Shaun Stairs

countered with the first of two goals by sophomore Brian Collins (Reading, Mass.).
Carmody's second goal early in the second period made it 4-1 before Southern
Maine scored three straight goals. Collins' second tally and a goal by junior

Southern Maine Skates to 2-2 Tie With Hamilton
GORHAM, Maine - The University of Southern Maine Huskies skated to a 2-2
tie with Hamilton College Continentals in a ECAC Division III men's hockey game
Saturday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena in Gorham.
Southern Maine, unbeaten in its last four games, is now 7-6-2 overall and 4-
4-1 in conference action. Hamilton moves to 5-4-3 and 4-3-2.
After a scoreless first period of play, both teams netted two goals in the
second period, and that would be the only scoring of the game as each team's
netminder worked furiously to prevent a go-ahead goal. Southern Maine's freshman
goalie Ryan Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) turned back 22 shots for the Huskies, while
his Hamilton counterpart, senior Rob MacNeil (St. Peter's, Nova Scotia), made 29
saves.
Hamilton started the scoring in the second period as sophomore defensemen
John Gordon (Keene, Ontario) converted an assist from Gus Katsuras (Toronto,
Ontario) in the fourth minute.
Southern Maine answered with back-to-back goal to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore
forward Chris Sparkes (St. John's, Newfoundland) scored the first of the Huskies
two goals on a power-play opportunity, finishing off an assist from sophomore
defenseman Chris Helms (Sandwich, Mass.) and freshmen defensemen Dane Marshall
(Yarmouth, Nova Scotia).
Southern Maine took a brief lead with 9:19 gone in the second when junior
forward James LeBlanc (Dorval, Quebec) tallied his sixth goal of the season
following an assist from sophomore forward Mark Carragher (Charlottetown, PEI).
But Hamilton would knot the game up at two goals in the 15th minute when
Katsuras would find the back of the net off of an assist from Clarkson and Jeff
Vautour (Quispamsis, New Brunswick).
Hamilton's MacNeil made 14 of his 29 saves in the third and overtime periods
to preserve the tie for the Continentals.
Southern Maine returns to action Friday, January 21, on the road at Babson

victory over the Amherst College Lord Jeffs in an ECAC Division III game Friday
night at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the third straight of the Huskies who improved to 7-6-1 overall

The win pulls the Huskies back up to the .500 mark with an overall record of

assists.
The USM lead doubled at 14:58 as junior James LeBlanc (Dorval, Quebec) potted
a power-play goal out of a scramble in front of the net. Sophomores Mark
Carragher (Charlottetown, PEI) and Chris Sparkes (St. John's, Nfld.) drew the
assists.
The teams traded goals in the second period. Senior defenseman Brandon
Cordua (Burlington, Ontario) scored his first goal since the 2002-2003 season on a

netminder Ryan Sullivan (Newton, Mass.) for his first career goal.

Southern Maine Wins Shootout, Edges St. Michael's 8-7
BURLINGTON, Vermont. - The University of Southern Maine Huskies rallied
from a 7-4 third period deficit to pull out an 8-7 win over the Purple Knights of
St. Michael's College in a high scoring ECAC Division III East men's hockey game
Saturday in Burlington, Vermont.
With the win Southern Maine improves to 5-6-1 overall and 3-4 in the ECAC
East, while St. Michael's falls to 5-5-1 and 2-4-1 in the conference.
Southern Maine entered the third period trailing St. Michael's 6-4, and fell
behind by three goals when the Purple Knight's Chris Thurston (Wallingford, Conn.)
finished an assist from Erik Caron (Kanato, Ontario) and Craig Geragosian
(Andover, Mass.) for his second goal of the game 8:17.
The Huskies answered back in a hurry, however, as James LeBlanc (Dorval,
Quebec) tallied his lone goal of the game just 30 seconds later to pull his team
to within two goals and start the Husky comeback. Sophomore Mark Carragher
(Charlottetown, PEI) and freshman Chris Sparkes (St. John's, Newfoundland) were
credited with the assist on LeBlanc's goal.
LeBlanc, Sparkes and Carragher would then team up for the next two goals.
Sparkes gave the Huskies their second unanswered goal with 13:20 gone in the third
period, when he slotted in his first goal of the game off an assist from Matt
Mendoza (Rockland, Mass.) and Steve Sloper (Concord, N.H.). Carragher would net
the equalizer to knot the game up at seven goals apiece with 16:25 off the clock
on an assist from LeBlanc and Sparkes.
With the game seemingly heading into overtime, Sparkes tallied his second
goal of the game, and sixth of the season, with just 1:27 to play to lift the
Huskies to the 8-7 win.
Freshman goalie Tyler Ravlo (Yarmouth, Nova Scotia) picked up his second win
of the season coming on in relief to make 19 saves over the final 42:27.
Sophomore David Beckles (Stamford, Conn.) started for USM and made five saves
before being lifted. Sophomre Erik Smith (warwick, R.I.) had 40 saves for the
Purple Knights.

had two goals and three assists to lead the nationally ranked Norwich University
Cadets to an 8-3 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in an
ECAC East game Friday night at the Kreitzberg Arena in Northfield, Vt.
The win snapped a rare two-game losing skid for the Cadets who were ranked
fifth in the nation this week. Norwich is now 7-2-2 overall and remains

game to a nationally ranked team to fall to 4-6-1 overall and 2-4-0 in the
league.

goal of the season just eight seconds into the contest. The senior All-American
doubled the lead at 7:35 of the period with his 100th career goal.
Beliaev, who assisted on McLean’s first goal, scored his first goal 25
seconds into the middle period. USM got one back as sophomore Mark Carragher
(Charlottetown, PEI) lit the lamp with a power-play marker at 6:38.
The Cadets got the next two goals from freshman Rick Cleaver (Vancouver
Island, B.C.) before McLean completed his hat trick at 14:18 to make it 6-1
after two periods.
Southern Maine got goals from freshman Brett Kapteina (Stamford, Conn.) and
senior Brandon Cordua (Burlington, Ontario) in the first 6:03 of the third
period to make things interesting. Junior Garrett Winder (Ajax, Ontario) and
Beliaev scored 12 seconds apart midway through the period to end the suspense.
Senior Kevin Schieve (Rocky Mountain House, Alberta) had 24 saves for the
Cadets while sophomore David Beckles (Stamford, Conn.) and freshman Tyler Ravlo

Colby Holds Off Southern Maine 3-2
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Jared Gordon (Bangor, Maine) scored what proved to
be the game-winning goal midway through the third period as the Colby College
White Mules held off the University of Southern Maine Huskies 3-2 in a non-
conference men's college hockey game Sunday afternoon at the USM Ice Arena.
The win was the fourth straight for the 15th ranked Mules who improve to 6-1-
0 overall. Southern Maine drops to 4-5-1 overall. The two teams will meet in a
conference game at Colby on February 11.
Gordon's fourth goal of the season at 8:07 of the final period gave Colby a
3-1 lead at the time. Senior Barry Brown (Souris, P.E.I.) and junior Jake Bayley
(Cambridge, Ontario) picked up the assists on the play.
Southern Maine got back within one at 11:15 when sophomore Mark Carragher
(Charlottetown, P.E.I.) scored a power-play goal off a passes from junior Ryan
Wright (Eliot, Maine) and senior Nate Isabelle (Plainfield, N.H.).
The Huskies put the pressure on Colby senior goalie Chris Ries (Pittsburgh,
Pa.) over the final four minutes, but were unable to slip the equalizer into the
net. USM's best chance came with about two minutes to play as freshman Mike
Stevens (Dover, N.H.) had a rebound land at his feet just outside the crease, but
the rookie forward was unable to get his stick on the bouncing puck with Ries out
of position.
Senior Cory Ernst (Bridgewater, Nova Scotia) put the visitors on top at 6:42
of the opening period with a power-play goal. Junior Matt Mendoza (Rockland,
Mass.) tied the game for the Huskies at the 13:20 mark with this first goal of the
season.
After a scoreless second period, Colby took the lead for good as freshman
Ryan Chrenek (Grande Prairie, Alberta) scored his first collegiate goal at 2:38 of
the third period. Chrenek was in the right spot to collect the rebound of Brown's
left circle shot that went wide and came out the other side off the end board.
Chrenek's shot from the right wing circle beat USM sophomore goalie David Beckles
(Stamford, Conn.) before he could get across the crease.
Beckles finished with 28 saves for Southern Maine while Ries was credited
with 27 saves for Colby.

Mass.) picked up a loose puck at his own blue line, skated into the UMD zone and
unleashed a slap shot that Kent tipped past senior goalie Kevin McGowan (Hingham,
Mass.) for the winning margin. The goal was the sixth of the season for Kent.

of the second period while the Huskies enjoyed a 5-on-3 power play. He later
assisted on Stevens' power-play goal late in the third period. Stevens picked up
his assist on an empty net goal by senior Erik Kent (Newburyport, Mass.) with 32
seconds left in regulation.

a rebound at 7:32 of the third period. It was Cadieux's sixth goal of the season.
Stevens scored at 17:09 to give the Huskies some breathing room, and Kent
clinched the game with his empty netter.

USM, Johnson & Wales Skate to 6-6 Tie
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Brett Kapteina (Stamford, Conn.) scored the tying
goal midway into the third period to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies
a 6-6 tie with the visiting Johnson and Wales University Wildcats in a non-
conference game Saturday night at the USM Ice Arena.
Kapteina potted his first collegiate goal at the 8:01 mark, converting a pass
from junior Neil Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.). Kapteina's shot from a bad angle
along the goal line found the top corner to the far side.
The tie dampened the outstanding hat trick performance by JWU senior forward
Will Meyer (Enfield, N.H.).
Southern Maine twice came back from one-goal deficits in the first period to
sneak out of the first 20 minutes with a 2-2 tie. Sophomore Zach Cobb (Dover,
N.H.) gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 1:56 before the
Huskies' Neil Kelleher (Haverhill, Mass.) tied the game 28 seconds later. Meyer's
first goal of the night made it 2-1, but the Huskies got even in the final minute
of the period on junior Ryan Wright's (Eliot, Maine) goal.
The Huskies took their only lead of the night at 1:54 of the second period as
senior captain Jon Lounsbury (Winthrop, Mass.) tallied on the power play. The
lead lasted just 13 seconds as Meyer tied the score at 3-3 with a power-play goal.
Freshman Ryan Lord (Spaulding, Vt.) followed with an unassisted goal at 2:24
to give the visitors the lead, and Meyer's hat trick made it 5-3 at 7:42. Senior
Erik Kent (Newburyport, Mass.) scored twice for USM before the period ended to
knot the score at 5-5.
Junior Nick Grover (Fairlawn, N.Y.) regained the lead for JWU at 3:58 of the
third period, setting the stage for Kapteina.
Freshman Charlie Bacon (Hudson, Mass.) had 37 saves, including 14 in the
third period and five in the overtime, for the Wildcats. Freshman Tyler Ravlo
(Yarmouth, Nova Scotia) had 10 saves for USM before giving way to sophomore David
Beckles (Stamford, Conn.) midway through the second period. Beckles made seven
saves over the final 34:58.
The tie left the Huskies with a 1-2-1 overall record heading into a non-
conference game Tuesday night against Plymouth State University. JWU is now 1-3-

Lounsbury, Cordua and LeBlanc Named USM Men's Hockey Captains
GORHAM, Maine - Senior defenseman Jon Lounsbury (Winthrop, Mass) has been
named captain of the 2004-2005 University of Southern Maine men's ice hockey
captain, while senior defenseman Brandon Cordua (Burlington, Ontario) and junior
forward James LeBlanc (Dorval, Quebec) have been named assistant captains.
"Between the three of them, Jon, Brandon and James, we have the ideal
leadership for this team," noted Southern Maine head coach Jeff Beaney. "Each of
them brings something different to the table that connects with the entire team.
I look forward to seeing them lead this team in its continued development and
progress."
Lounsbury is coming off of a solid junior year in which the 5-foot-10
defenseman scored five goals and passed off 19 assists. Lounsbury earned All-ECAC
East Second Team honors and was named to the Codfish Bowl all-tournament team. He
also named the ECAC East Player of the Week twice.
"Jon is the heart and soul of this team," said Beaney. "He's a natural
leader both on and off the ice and has really set the tone for the program. He's
one of the top defenseman in the league," added Beaney about Lounsbury who also
earned conference all-rookie team recognition as a freshman. "His achievements are
a tribute to is work ethic, talent and dedication, because he didn't start playing
defense until he came to USM."
LeBlanc, the Huskies top returning scorer from a year ago, rattled off 14
goals and 11 assists as a sophomore. LeBlanc, who tallied five power play goals
last season, was named the ECAC East Player of the Week once during 2003-2004.
"James is coming off of a great sophomore year," commented Beaney. "He led
the team in points and goals last season, and he leads by example. His exemplary
work ethic is something that all coaches look for and has made him into one of the
top forwards in the league."
Cordua served as one of the assistant captains last season and has been a
leader for Southern Maine defensively the past three years. In 2003-2004, Cordua
played in all 26 games for the Huskies and rang up six assists.
"Brandon is an emotional leader who has gained the respect of every player on
the team," said Beaney. "Along with being a solid defensive player for us, Brandon
is essential to the chemistry and in turn the success of our team."
After finishing the season at 11-14-1 overall and 6-11-1 in the ECAC East,
Lounsbury, LeBlanc and Cordua will be looked upon to lead a youthful Husky hockey
team into the 2004-2005 season.
