USM's Narcisi Named ECAC East Rookie of the Week

GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman forward Franco Narcisi (Laval, Quebec) of the
University of Southern Maine Huskies men's ice hockey team has been selected by
the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) as its Division III Men's East
Rookie of the Week for the period of January 20-26. The announcement was made
Tuesday afternoon by the ECAC office in Centerville, Mass.
This is the second time this season that the 5-foot-9, 180-pound winger has
been named the Men's East Rookie of the Week. He also picked up the award for the
week of December 9-15.
Narcisi earned the nod as the leagues top rookie on the strength of his
school record tying four-goal performance during the Huskies' 9-8 overtime loss at
Babson College on Saturday.
During that game, Narcisi scored a short-handed goal in the second period to
give the Huskies a 3-2 lead at the time. After Babson scored five straight goals
to take a 7-3 lead, Narcisi began the Huskies' comeback with an even-strength
goal, then netted a power-play goal to make it 7-5. His record tying fourth goal
came in the third period and gave Southern Maine an 8-7 lead.
The four-goal performance tied the school single-game mark set by Travis
Bezio during the 1991-92 season against Stonehill College.
On the season, Narcisi is the team's second leading scorer with nine goals
and nine assists for 18 points.
Southern Maine, 5-11 overall and 2-9 in ECAC East play, heads out on the road
this weekend to play Connecticut College (Friday, 7:30 p.m.) and Tufts University
(Saturday, 2:00 p.m.).

LaFreniere, Babson Edges Southern Maine in OT, 9-8

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- Freshman Jamas LaFreniere (Southboro, Mass.) scored
his fourth goal of the game 24 second into overtime to give the Babson College
Beavers a thrilling 9-8 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in
an ECAC Division III East men's game Saturday afternoon.
The win gave Babson three out of a possible four points in their games
against Salem State (5-5 tie Friday) and Southern Maine this weekend. Babson
improved to 10-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in league play. Southern Maine, which had
its modest two-game winning streak stopped, fell to 5-11 overall and 2-9 in ECAC
play.
LaFreniere forced the game into the extra session when he scored a power-play
goal at 17:42 of the third period. The goal snapped a string of five straight
Southern Maine goals that had wiped out a four-goal deficit. The rookie forward
gave the host team the win in overtime when he took a feed from juniors Derek
Nisula (Gardner, Mass.) and Dustin Kim (Laurel, Md.) and beat USM sophomore goalie
Tim Claus (Needham, Mass.).
LaFreniere's late-game heroics overshadowed an outstanding comeback by the
Huskies, highlighted by the school record tying four-goal effort of freshman
Franco Narcisi (Laval, Quebec). Narcisi gave the visitors a 3-2 lead with his
first goal of the game, a short-handed tally at 1:37 of the second period.
After Babson scored five straight goals to take a 7-3 advantage, Narcisi
ignited a run of five USM goals with his second goal. He scored his third
straight goal of the second period on the power play at 15:18. His fourth goal,
at 13:02 of the final period, gave the Huskies an 8-7 lead. The four goals in one
game equals the school record set by Travis Bezio against Stonehill in the 1991-92
season.
Junior goalie J.R. Wappel (Flemington, N.J.) started for Southern Maine and
made eight saves before giving way to Claus who turned aside 10 shots. Junior
Jason Hart (Millburn, Mass.) made 13 saves for Babson before being lifted in favor
of freshman Craig Weiner (Thorwood, N.Y.) who was credited with four saves.
Southern Maine hits the road again next weekend for games at Connecticut
College (Friday, 7:00 p.m.) and Tufts University (Saturday, 4:00 p.m.). Babson
returns to action Tuesday night with a non-conference game against Plymouth State.

SAINT MICHAEL'S GETS FIRST ECAC EAST WIN

COLCHESTER, Vt. -- It was a hard-fought battle between two evenly matched
teams, but it was Saint Michael's who prevailed defeating the University of
Southern Maine, 4-2, for its first ECAC East victory of the season at Cairns Arena
this evening.
With the victory, the Ice Knights improve to 4-6 overall and 1-5 in the ECAC
East, while USM drops to 3-8 and 0-6 in the league.
The Huskies opened up the scoring in the first period as freshman Franco
Narcisi (Laval, Que.) scored when a Saint Michael's defender lost his stick in
front of the net for a 1-0 lead at the 18:13 mark. Sophomores Jon Lounsbury
(Winthrop, Mass.) and Bob Zarella (Duxbury, Mass.) were credited with assists.
The Ice Knights made the game even on a power-play goal by junior Justin
Quenneville (Montreal, Que.) off passes by Daykin Marini (Broomfield, Conn.) and
Ian Morse (Waterbury, Vt.) at 12:07 into the second period. Defense then took over
for the home team as SMC fought off a 5-on-3 USM power play just two minutes
later.
Saint Michael's came out firing in the third period with several good shots
on net but Huskies goalie J.R. Wappel (Flemington, N.J.) made some spectacular
saves early on. Senior Brad Kent (Scituate, Mass.) gave Saint Michael's the go-
ahead goal when he redirected a shot off a pass by freshman Alex Watts (Cheshire,
Conn.) and sophomore Matt Anctil (Wolfeboro, N.H.). Nick Towne (Milton, Vt.)
answered with a high backhanded shot just seconds later to make it 3-1. Tom
Mariano (Northfield, Vt.) dished out the helper.
Southern Maine cut the lead to one, when Erik Kent (Newburyport, Mass.) fired
home a shot on assists by James LeBlanc (Dorval, Que.) and Chad Lauze (Gorham,
N.J.). Frantically, USM attempted to tie the game on a power play, but with three
second left on the clock Morse scored an empty netter.
Sophomore Andy Joy (Oak Park, Ill.) recorded 31 saves for Saint Michael's,
while Wappel finished with 29. The Huskies and SMC both had 33 shots on goal.
Saint Michael's hosts Salem State on Saturday at 3 p.m. while Southern Maine
