Curtis Wheeler, Nick Wheeler and Forrest Tobie Named
University of Southern Maine Men's Cross Country Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook),
Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union) and Nick Wheeler (Derby,
Vt./North Country Union) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's cross
country team have been named captains for the 2007 season. Third-year head
coach Scott Hutchinson made the announcement as the Huskies begin preseason
training and prepare to defend their Little East Conference championship.
Tobie and the Wheeler brothers served as team captains in 2006 and played a
pivotal role in the Huskies first-ever conference championship. Entering their
senior seasons, Tobie and the Wheelers will look to continue the Huskies
unprecedented success from a year ago. Returning all seven student-athletes
from last year's 10th place finish at the New England Regional Championship,
Hutchinson stated that the team's goal is to be a top five team in 2007.
"Forrest, Curtis and Nick are excited for the season to begin," noted
Hutchinson. "In their second turn as team captains, their leadership and work
ethic have been tremendous and positive. They all do a great job of leading by
example and when they do speak up they have the respect of their teammates.
With numerous newcomers, their leadership will be key as we look to continue to
be successful regionally and nationally."
One of the Huskies top runners, Tobie earned both All-Little East
Conference and New England Alliance honors for Southern Maine. Tobie placed
seventh overall at the 2006 Little East Conference championship.
Nick Wheeler earned All-Little East Conference honors for the first time in
his career as a junior and repeated as an All-Alliance competitor in 2006.
Twice named the Little East Conference Runner of the Week (Oct. 8 and Oct. 15),
Wheeler garnered Division III All-New England honors with a 15th place finish at
the Division III New England Regional Championship. Wheeler covered the 8,000-
meter course in a time of 26:17.9. In the 2006 LEC Championship race, Wheeler
placed fourth overall with a time of 27:12.
Entering into his senior season, Curtis Wheeler returns after a tremendous
junior year in which he qualified for and participated in the NCAA Division III
National Championship in Mason, Ohio. A Division III All-New England, All-LEC
and All-Alliance honoree in 2006, Wheeler also earned U.S. Track/Field & Cross
Country Association NCAA Division III All-Academic honors. Wheeler finished as
the Huskies top runner in five of the seven races he competed in, including
placing first overall at the Keene State Invitational with a winning time of
26:03.
Curtis Wheeler led the way for the Huskies at the 2006 Little East
Conference/Alliance championship meet, placing third overall with a time of
27:04. At the Division III New England Regional Championship, he placed 10th,
completing the 8,000-meter course in 26:03.3 to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA
Championships.
After its season-opening Alumni Meet on September 1 (10:30 a.m.), Southern
Maine travels to the University of New England Invitational on September 8
(11:30 a.m.). The remainder of the Huskies' September schedule includes
traveling to North Dartmouth, Mass., for the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth Invitational on September 15 (12:45 p.m.) and to Wenham, Mass., for
the Gordon College Invitational on September 29 (11:30 a.m.).
In October, the Huskies travel to the New England Championships at Franklin
Park in Boston on October 6 (1:00 p.m.) and the Maine State Championship Meet
hosted by Bates College at the Pineland Center in New Gloucester, Maine, on
October 13 (12:00 p.m.). The Huskies will look to defend their conference title
when they travel to Westfield, Mass., for the Little East Conference and New
England Alliance Championships on October 27 (12:00 p.m.).
The Huskies will close out the season in November competing in the ECAC
Championship at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., on November 3 (12:00
p.m.), and the NCAA Division III New England Regional Championship on November
10 in New London, Conn. (12:00 p.m.).
