Huskies Enter 2009 Ranked Fourth In New England and 27th Nationally
GORHAM, Maine -- For the first time in school history the University of
Southern Maine Huskies men’s cross country team will enter its season with a
preseason ranking both nationally and regionally. The Huskies, who have
captured the Little East Conference Championship two out of the last three
seasons (2006, 2007), are ranked fourth in the preseason U.S. Track and Field
and Cross Country Coaches Division III Poll for the New England Region and are
ranked 27th in the national poll.
Recently named team captains, seniors Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine), Jon
Letendre (Rumford, R.I./LaSalle Academy) and Justin Richardson (Turner,
Maine/St. Dominic) will help lead a veteran laden Huskies squad that finished
second in the Little East Conference (LEC) championship in 2008 and finished in
the top ten at both the ECAC Championships and the NCAA Division III New England
Regional.
Fifth-year head coach Scott Hutchinson commented, “It’s nice to have the
recognition and respect from peers; we have had several solid seasons recently
with good success. However, just like I expressed to the team, what really
matters is what we do during the season and in competition.”
The Huskies return 13 runners from last season including 2008 LEC Runner of
the Year senior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and 2008 LEC Rookie
of the Year Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) and boast considerable depth in their
roster with 38 student-athletes.
Last season the Huskies earned its first top-10 finish at the ECAC
Championship since 1999, placing 10th out of 48 teams. Southern Maine also
earned its third straight top-10 finish at the NCAA Division III New England
Regional and fifth in the last 12 years earning a ninth place finish out of 49
schools. The Huskies also sent two runners to the NCAA Division III National
Championship in Jasud and Gomes.
Southern Maine begins its season on Saturday (Sept. 12, 11:30 a.m.) at the
University of New England Invitational in Biddeford.
