SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore harrier Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North
Country Union) placed 23rd among 303 finishers at the NCAA Division III New
England Regional Championship to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies
men’s cross country team to a top 15 finish Saturday afternoon in Springfield,
Mass.
Southern Maine finished 14th among 43 schools with a total of 391 points.

Wheeler covered the eight-kilometer course at the Veterans Golf Course in

the race garnered him All-New England honors and was a dramatic improvement from
his 88th place mark in the 2004 race. Each year the top 35 runners at the race
earn the All-New England distinction.
"Curtis had a phenomenal race and proved that he is among the top runners
in New England," noted first-year men's cross country mentor Scott Hutchinson.
"He had a race plan, stuck to it and it paid off. Earning this achievement as a
sophomore is a tribute to Curtis' dedication and character as a student-athlete
and shows great promise in the future."
Wheeler's twin brother, Nick (Derby, Vt./North Country Union), was the
second USM runner across the line, finishing 53rd in 26:48.6, while senior
captain Claton Conrad (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) was the third finisher for
the Huskies, placing 75th in a time of 27:09.3.

Area). Tobie placed 111th in a time of 27:54.8 and McCarthy placed 129th in a
time of 28:19.5.

Kyle Smith (Greene, Maine/Leavitt Area), who placed 196th in a time of 29:47.5.
The Huskies 14th place finish bettered their 2004 performance when they
placed 19th overall. The race concluded the Huskies’ 2005 season.

Conrad and Smith Named USM Men's Cross Country Captains

GORHAM, Maine - Seniors Claton Conrad (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely) and
Kyle Smith (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) have been named co-captains
of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's cross-country team. First-
year head coach Scott Hutchinson made the announcement as the Huskies prepared
for their season opening meet on Saturday.
"Both Claton and Kyle were chosen by their teammates as captains of this
year's squad," said Hutchinson, who previously coached at Salve Regina
University and Babson College.
"Because they were chosen by their peers, I think it shows that they have
earned the respect and admiration of their teammates. Both lead by example, but
are also outspoken leaders as well. This combination will serve them well as
captains."
Smith, one of the Huskies top runners from a year ago, placed in USM's top
five in six out of seven races. At the Little East Conference/New England
Alliance Championships, Smith placed 19th overall in the LEC portion of the race
as the Huskies finished second behind Keene State College. In the New England
Alliance scoring, Smith finished 32nd to help the Huskies to a second place
finish.
During the 2003 season, Conrad placed 17th overall in the LEC Championships
and 22nd in the New England Alliance Championship. In seven dates of
competition, Conrad placed as one the Huskies' top five finishers six times. He
did not compete last season as he was on an exchange program.
With a solid group of returning athletes, including sophomores Forest Tobie
(Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook) and Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country
Union), who earned All-New England Alliance honors, and the addition of talented
newcomers, Hutchinson is hopeful that his harriers will continue their success
in the conference. "As long as we remain healthy and continue our steady
progress, I believe that we have the talent to finish as one of the top teams in
the Little East Athletic Conference."
The Huskies begin their 2005 season this Saturday (September 3) at the New
England College Invitational. USM will race on three more dates during the
month, including the Connecticut College Invitational (Sept. 10), UMass

State Invitational (Oct. 1), followed by the New England Championships in Boston
(Oct. 8) and the State of Maine Championships (Oct. 15). After a bye week, the
Huskies return to action to compete in the Little East Conference and New
England Alliance Championships (Oct. 29).
