Greg Dolbec Receives Wirths Memorial Award
GORHAM, Maine -- University of Southern Maine senior Greg Dolbec (Newfield,
Maine/ Massabesic HS) has been selected by the Athletics Department coaching staff
and administrative personnel as the 2003-2004 recipient of the Roland Wirths
Memorial Award. The award was presented by USM Assistant Director of Athletics,
Kimberly Turner, at the Athletics Department's recent Senior Awards Night banquet.
The award, presented annually since 1980, is given in honor of the former
Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram sportswriter who was a strong
supporter of USM athletics. It is given to the deserving student-athlete who best
exemplifies the characteristics of Wirths and his writing.
Wirths often wrote about the overachiever, the person small in stature who
made a big difference. He was interested in stories of the heart, people who made
a real difference, or the true leader or inspirational-type player.
The captain of the cross country team last fall, Dolbec was twice selected as
the Little East Conference Runner of the Week. He was among the region's elite
runners until a leg injury in mid-October knocked him out of competition the final
three races, including the NCAA Regional Championship.
Dolbec has overcome a variety of injuries during his career to earn All-
Little East Conference citations on three occasions for indoor track (2000, 2001
and 2003) and three more in outdoor track (2000, 2001 and 2002). A versatile
performer, he ran middle distance and distance events (400 through 1,000 meters
indoors, 400 through 5000 meters outdoors) and competed in the pole vault. He
earned a combined five All-LEC citations in the pole vault.
USM men's cross country and track and field head coach Bruce Bickford, who
was unable to attend the awards banquet because he was traveling to the Little
East Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships meet, relayed his thoughts
about Dolbec. He wrote of Dolbec as "one of the toughest, most focused
individuals I've ever had the pleasure to work with. His dedication parallels
none. His decision making in races is flawless. He is one of two athletes that I
have coached in my 20 years of coaching that know how to race. You cannot teach
this. Learning how to race is instinctive, and Greg's got it. There is no
individual or person I respect more for what he has made of himself than Greg."
Dolbec is majoring in business at USM and is expected to graduate in May.

USM's Greg Dolbec Named LEC Runner of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior captain Greg Dolbec (Newfield, Maine/Massabesic HS)
of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's cross country team has been
named the Little East Conference Runner of the Week for the week ending September

a USM harrier on the Twin Brook course.
"(Dolbec) has been kind of amazing every week. He's come from having limited
success at the high school level to where he's now running with some of the elite
runner in Division III in New England, and he's put himself in position to have a
shot to qualify for (the NCAA Division III) nationals (in November)," said head
coach Bruce Bickford.
"It was an amazing performance (Saturday). It was a 45-second PR (personal
record) on that course. That's something you don't see every week. It's a great
success story for him to come through all the injuries he had in the summer, and
only being able to get back out running since July."
Dolbec has been the Huskies' top finisher in each of the first three races,
including top ten finishes Saturday and at the season-opening Amherst College
Invitational.
Southern Maine finished ninth among the 13 teams in the high-competitive
field. The Huskies' top five finishers combined for 189 points, just 11 points

Senior Emory Bickford (Benton, Maine) was the second Husky to cross the line,
finishing 41st overall in 28:29. He was followed in rapid succession by junior
Michael Bunker (Bucksport, Maine), who placed 45th in 28:35, freshman Chris
Hopkins (North Blackfield, Mass.), who was 46th in 28:36; and junior Clayton
Conrad (North Yarmouth, Maine), who followed in 28:42 to place 48th.
Bunker's performance was noteworthy for two reasons. First, the junior runner
was returning from a nagging injury which had sidelined him from last week's UMass
Dartmouth Invitational. Second, after losing a shoe with just over two miles to
go, he discarded his remaining shoe in an attempt to regain his balance and
completed the race barefoot.
The Huskies return to action next Saturday (October 4), when they travel to
the Keene State Invitational.

Greg Dolbec Named USM Men's X-C Captain
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior Greg Dolbec (Newfield, Maine) of the University of
Southern Maine men's cross country team has been named captain for the upcoming
2003 season. Third-year head coach Bruce Bickford made the announcement.
This is the second year that Dolbec has served as the team's captain. He
shared the duties last season with Darryl Whitney.
The Huskies open their eight-event season Saturday afternoon (1:00 p.m.) when
they travel to Amherst, Mass., to compete in the Amherst College Invitational.
"Greg is like the perfect captain. He's come up through the ranks and is now
one of the top level runners," said Bickford.
"He relates to the guys very well and his work ethic is just amazing. He's a
good motivator and always thinks about his teammates. The guys really look up to
him with where he's come from and everything he's been through," added Bickford
The team's number three runner last season, Dolbec was the Huskies' third
finisher in six of the team's eight races behind the departed Whitney and Marc
LeBlanc. Dolbec opened the 2002 campaign with a solid 21st place finish at the
Amherst Invitational with his time of 28:24. He was 21st at the New England
Alliance Championship in early November with a time of 27:42. He closed the 2002
season with an 89th place finish among the 268 finishers at the NCAA Regional
Championship with a season-best time of 26:56.
