Dolbec, Whitney Named Men's Cross Country Captains

GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Greg Dolbec (Shapleigh, Maine) and Darryl
Whitney (Hudson, N.H.) have been named captains of the University of Southern
Maine Huskies men's cross country team for the 2002 season. Second-year head
coach Bruce Bickford made the announcement prior to the Huskies season-opening
meet last weekend at Amherst College.
Whitney opened the 2002 season with a solid seventh place finish at the
Amherst Invitational. An All-State, All-Little East Conference and All-Alliance
performer last season, Whitney finished fourth last season in the State
Championship and sixth in the combined Alliance and Little East Championships.
He was the team's top finisher in all seven races during the 2001 season.
Dolbec, a three-year competitor for the Huskies, came home 21st among the
123 competitors who finished at the Amherst Invitational. Last season, he was
one of the Huskies' most consistent competitors, placing second among the team's
scoring runners six of seven races.
"Darryl leads by example," said Bickford. "As a number one runner, he
knows what to expect of himself and is a good leader by example.
" Greg is a lot more hands on. He's a great communicator with the younger
runners, giving them tips on what to expect during a race or what I am trying to
tell them," continued Bickford
"They're both great with kids. They're very personable, and they
complement each other very well," added Bickford.
The Huskies return to action September 21 when they travel to the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth for the UMD Invitational (11:15). The
rest of the 2002 schedule includes Sept. 28, USM Invitational at Twin Brooks
Recreation Center in Cumberland, Maine (2:00); Oct. 5, State of Maine
