Huskies Battle To Double Overtime Win Against Johnson State 99-92
Isaac Nets 41 points; Smith Pivotal in Second OT
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – Junior forward Otis Smith (Altamonte Springs,
Fla./Ocoee) scored six of his 15 points, including a key go-ahead basket, in the
second overtime period and junior guard Cortez Isaac (Washington,
D.C./Northwest) poured in 41 points to lead the University of Southern Maine
Huskies to a high-scoring 99-92 double overtime win over the Johnson State
Badgers in the consolation game of the 2009 Wesleyan Tip-Off Tournament Saturday
afternoon in Middletown, Conn.
The win is the first of the season for USM that improves to 1-2 overall.
The Badgers drop their third straight game to fall to 0-3.
Smith finished the game with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Isaac was a force
for USM matching the third highest single game points total in program history.
Isaac finished the game 15-for-24 from the field, including a 5-for-10 mark from
three-point range. He added seven rebounds, five assists, three blocks and a
steal. Junior guard John Sewall (Bath, Maine/Cheverus) added 18 points.
Four players reached double-figures for the Badgers led by 24 points from
senior guard Leandro Martinez (Philadelphia, Pa./Holy Ghost). Senior forward
Nate Dodge (Burlington, Vt.) added 19 points and 12 rebounds, followed by 17
points from junior guard Ian Passino (Peru, N.Y.). Freshman forward Chuck
Harper (Philadelphia, Pa./Samuel Fels) tossed in 16 points off of the bench.
With the score tied at 90 with 1:22 remaining in the second overtime
period, Smith sank a short jumper in the paint to put the Huskies ahead for
good. Over the final 1:22, Smith remained clutch on both sides of the ball
sinking 4-of-4 from the free throw line while clearing the boards for three
rebounds, including a pair of defensive caroms.
Southern Maine overcame a slim 39-34 halftime deficit to force the overtime
action. Isaac netted 18 of his 41 points in the second half. In the overtime
periods, both Isaac and Smith were instrumental with Smith scoring seven of his
15 points in the 10 minutes of extra time and Isaac netting nine. Smith also
garnered five of his 10 rebounds in the overtime periods.
Southern Maine hosts Bates College in its home opener on Tuesday (7:30
p.m.). Johnson State hosts Middlebury College on Sunday (2:00 p.m.).

Becker Defeats Southern Maine 74-67
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- Sophomore guard Terrance Favors (Boston,
Mass./Bedford) scored six of his 23 points in a pivotal 11-2 run late in the
game to help the Becker College Owls post a 74-67 win over the University of
Southern Maine Huskies in a first round game of the Wesleyan University Tip Off
Tournament Friday night in Middletown, Conn.
With the loss, Southern Maine falls to 0-2 on the season. Becker improves
to 1-2 with the win. Southern Maine will face Johnson State College in the
consolation game of the tournament on Saturday (1:00). Becker will face
Wesleyan in the championship game (3:00).
The Owls trailed 60-58 with 7:00 remaining before putting together the
decisive 11-2 run to pull ahead 69-62 with 1:38 left on the clock. Favors added
10 rebounds for the double-double to compliment his 23 points. Junior center
Trey Jacobs (Lexington Park, MD/Great Mills) netted a game-high 32 points and
snagged 10 rebounds.
Junior guard Otis Smith (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Ocoee) led the Huskies
with 23 points, including six three-pointers. Junior guard John Sewall (Bath,
Maine/Cheverus) added 15 points, while junior forward Cortez Isaac (Washington,
D.C./Northwest) tossed in 14 points.

University of New England Defeats Southern Maine 82-70
BIDDEFORD, Maine – Junior guard Kadare Brown (Baton Rouge, La./Istrouma)
scored a team-high 21 points to lead the University of New England Nor’easters
to an 82-70 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-
conference men’s basketball game Tuesday evening at The Campus Center in
Biddeford, Maine.
UNE improves to 1-1 with the win. Playing in their season-opener the
Huskies fall to 0-1 with the loss.
Brown was one of four UNE players in double-figures as the Nor’easters used
a balanced attack and a solid 45.3 shooting percentage (29-for-64) to secure
their first win of the season. Sophomore center Anthony Johnson (Austin,
Texas/Del Valle) scored 17 points and senior guard Marchale Robinson (Baton
Rouge, La./Louisiana New School Academy) tossed in 14 points, including a
quartet of three-pointers. Sophomore forward Quentin Thompson (Austin,
Texas/William B. Travis) netted 10 points and secured a game-best 14 rebounds
for a double double.
Southern Maine junior guard Cortez Isaac (Washington, DC/Northwest) led all
scorers with 30 points on an outstanding 10-for-17 effort from the field. Isaac
added five assists and nine rebounds to pace the Huskies. Junior guard John
Sewall (Bath, Maine/Cheverus) tossed in 17 points and junior guard Otis Smith
(Altamonte Springs, Fla./Ocee) added 10 points.
Robinson and Johnson combined for 21 of UNE’s 43 points at the half to help
the Nor’easters take control of the game in the opening stanza. The Nor’easters
shot a solid 44.1 percent (15-for-34) from the field in the first half,
including an impressive eight three pointers, to jump out to a 43-34 lead at the
break.
The Huskies rallied in the second half and knotted the score up at 53-53
with 10:04 to play on three-pointer from Isaac and briefly took the lead, 55-53
on a fast-break lay-up from Sewall as part of a 11-0 USM run. However, UNE was
able to recover stringing together a 9-0 run, including five points from Brown.
Southern Maine is in action on Friday (8 p.m.) against Becker College in
the second game of the Wesleyan Tip-Off Tournament. University of New England
is at eighth-ranked UMass Dartmouth on Friday (7:30 p.m.).

Jellison, Poulin and Sewall Selected as USM Men’s Basketball Captains
Huskies Open Season on November 17 at the University of New England
GORHAM, Maine – Junior guard John Sewall (Bath, Maine/Cheverus), junior
guard Troy Jellison (Bangor, Maine) and sophomore guard Mike Poulin (Readfield,
Maine/Maranacook) have been named tri-captains of the University of Southern
Maine Huskies men’s basketball team for the 2009-2010 season. USM head coach
Karl Henrikson, in his seventh season, made the announcement as the Huskies
prepare for their season-opening game at the University of New England on
Tuesday, November 17 (7:30 p.m.).
“John, Troy and Mike all have the necessary qualities to be successful
leaders for us on and off of the court,” commented Henrikson. “They are
exceptionally hard-workers and are committed to the team’s success. They make
smart choices on and off of the court.”
In his third season with the Huskies, Sewall, a shooting guard, averaged
9.8 points per game last season. In two seasons, Sewall has totaled 286 points,
59 rebounds and 58 assists.
“John has been recognized by his teammates for his dedication and
commitment,” said Henrikson. “He is a natural leader who aims to get the most
from his teammates.”
In two seasons Jellison has seen action as the Huskies point guard and off
guard. In 49 career games, he has amassed 150 points, 110 rebounds and 87
assists.
“Troy knows how to win. He comes from a State Championship program at
Bangor High School and has both the basketball IQ and the assertiveness to lead
our team in a positive direction,” noted Henrikson.
After a successful freshman campaign in 2008-2009, Poulin is poised for a
breakout sophomore season. Poulin played in all 26 games as a freshman earning
a starting position for 18 games. He averaged a solid 4.9 points, 2.0 rebounds
and led the team in assists with 59 and was second in steals with 29.
“Mike played with distinction as a freshman,” commented Henrikson. “He
displays dedication, commitment and values that his teammates admire and there
is no doubt that he will lead by example every day.”
Following its opener with UNE, Southern Maine plays in the Wesleyan
University Tip Off Tournament. USM faces Becker (Nov. 20, 8:00 p.m.) and then
will play in either the consolation or championship game against either Wesleyan
University or Johnson State (Nov. 21, 1:00/3:00 p.m.). Southern Maine is at home
against Bates (Nov. 24, 7:30 p.m.) and then travels to St. Joseph’s College
(Maine) (Nov. 29, 7:30 p.m.).
In December, Southern Maine hosts Bowdoin College (Dec. 1, 7:30 p.m.) and
LEC foe Western Connecticut State (Dec. 5, 3:00 p.m.) before traveling to UMaine
Farmington (Dec. 7, 7:00 p.m.). USM returns to conference action against Keene
State (Dec. 12, 3:00 p.m.).
In January, the Huskies will play in the Williams Tournament. USM will
face host Williams College (Jan. 3, 7:00 p.m.) and then face either Colby-Sawyer
College or Worcester State College in the consolation or championship game (Jan.
4, 3:00 p.m./7:00 p.m.). The Huskies remain on the road for the next four games
traveling to Husson University (Jan. 6, 7:30 p.m.), UMass Dartmouth (Jan. 9,
3:00 p.m.), Rhode Island College (Jan. 12, 7:30 p.m.) and Eastern Connecticut
State (Jan. 16, 3:00 p.m.). USM hosts Plymouth State (Jan. 19, 7:30 p.m.),
travels to Western Connecticut State (Jan. 23, 3:00 p.m.), hosts UMass Boston
(Jan. 26, 7:30 p.m.) before closing out the month at Keene State (Jan. 30, 3:00
p.m.).
In February, Southern Maine hosts back-to-back games against Colby College
(Feb. 2, 7:30 p.m.) and UMass Dartmouth (Feb. 6, 3:00 p.m.). The Huskies travel
to Plymouth State (Feb. 9, 7:30 p.m.), host Rhode Island College (Feb. 13, 3:00
p.m.) and travel to UMass Boston (Feb. 16, 7:30 p.m.) before closing out the
regular season at home against Eastern Connecticut State (Feb. 23, 3:00 p.m.).
The Little East Conference tournament begins February 23 with the four
quarterfinal games played at high seeded teams. The semifinals and finals will
be held February 26-27 at the home of the highest remaining seed. The
tournament winner will receive the conference’s automatic berth into the 2009
NCAA Division III National Championship tournament.
