Josh Daniels Named to All-Little East Conference Second Team
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) of the University of Southern Maine men's basketball team has been named to the All-Little East Conference second team for the second straight year. The conference announced its end-of-the-season awards on Tuesday following voting by the head coaches. The 6-foot-1 Daniels averaged a team-high 13.6 points and 4.1 rebounds per game. He also led the Huskies in assists with 63 and steals with 26 despite missing five games due to injuries. Daniels shot 41.9 percent (96 of 229) from the field, including 37.2 percent (29 of 78) from beyond the three-point arc, and 75.6 percent (65 of 86) from the foul line. "Josh is a tremendous player and leader for us," noted fourth-year head coach Karl Henrikson. "Aside from his physical abilities, Josh is an on-the- court leader who plays with a tremendous amount of confidence and heart. I am pleased that he received recognition from the conference." Daniels scored in double-figures 14 times during the season, including a season- and career-high 32-point effort in the Huskies' 87-82 loss against Western Connecticut State University (February 3). In 66 career games over three seasons, Daniels has scored 821 points, grabbed 288 rebounds, passed off 157 assists and come up with 89 steals, while shooting 42.5 percent from the field, including 39.2 percent from three-point territory. Southern Maine finished the 2006-07 season with an overall record of 6-20 and 2-12 in the Little East.

Little East Conference Tournament - First Round Game Rhode Island College Defeats Southern Maine in OT 72-69 Top-Seeded Anchormen Survive Scare from Huskies
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior forward Brian Stanko (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) drained a three-pointer with 1.6 seconds to play to lift the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 72-69, overtime win over University of Southern Maine Huskies in the first round of the 2007 Little East Conference men's basketball tournament Tuesday night at Rhode Island College. With the win, the top-seeded Anchormen earn the right to host the LEC semifinals and finals on Friday and Saturday (February 23-24). Rhode Island College is now 22-3 overall. The Huskies, seeded eighth in the tournament, conclude their season with a record of 6-20, suffering their ninth consecutive loss. Seven of Southern Maine's losses during the season were by five points or less, including a pair of overtime defeats. Stanko, who struggled offensively making just 1-for-8, and 0-for-6 from three-point range before knocking down the game-winner, finished with five points, three rebounds and a pair of assists. Sophomore guard Tirrell Hill (Bronx, N.Y./All Hallows) led the Anchormen with a game-high 21 points. Senior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, Maine/Telstar) and sophomore guard Bobby Bailey (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Southern Maine junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) led the Huskies with 20 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury) recorded a double- double with 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Freshman guard Greg Whitaker (Presque Isle, Maine/Presque Isle) added 12 points off of the bench. Trailing by 13, 63-50, with 7:45 to play in regulation, USM stormed back scoring 13 unanswered points to force the overtime session. Whitaker keyed the USM run knocking down a three and was followed by five straight points from Daniels on a three and a lay-up. Coppenrath scored USM's next five points on a jumper and a trio of free throws to knot the score up at 63-63 with 1:09 left. Both teams matched each other from the free throw line in the final minute of action as Durgin and Daniels each connected on a pair before the end of regulation. In overtime, both teams misfired in their opening possessions. Rhode Island College took a two-point lead on a pair of free throws from Hill, but USM quickly tied the score on a jumper from Whitaker for a 67-67 game with 3:21 left. Stanko made his first basket of the game with 2:40 left in overtime to give RIC a 69-67 lead which stood until USM senior guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) made a game-tying jumper with 28 seconds on the clock. On its ensuing possession, Rhode Island College held on for the last shot and Stanko nailed the three from the right side of the circle off a pass from Hill. Rhode Island College finished the game shooting 37.5 percent (24-for-64) for the game. Southern Maine shot 38.5 percent (25-for-65) from the field. Keene State Downs Southern Maine 79-65
KEENE, N.H. -- Junior forward Nick Drouin (Weare, N.H./John Stark Regional) scored 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting to lead four players in double- figures as the Keene State College Owls defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies 79-63 Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Gymnasium on the KSC campus. With its fourth consecutive win, Keene State improves to 21-4 overall and 11-3 in the Little East. Southern Maine drops to 6-19 overall and 2-12 in conference action. Drouin netted his team-high 16 points in just 17 minutes of action and also grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore forward Nate Anderson (Westminster, Mass./Oakmont Regional) notched a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior guard David Sontag (Mount Vernon, N.H./Souhegan) added 12 points and five rebounds, and junior guard Matt Hickey (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) chipped in with 11 points off of the bench. Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury) led Southern Maine with a game-high 23 points on a 10-for-17 shooting effort from the field, including a pair of three-pointers. Junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) was the only other USM player in double-figures scoring 17 points and grabbing five rebounds. Junior forward Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) added eight points and team-high seven rebounds. Keene State used an 11-0 run in the final three minutes of the first half to take a 39-29 lead at the break and held the Huskies at bay in the second half en route to the win. Trailing by point, 29-28, following a baseline jumper from Coppenrath with 3:09 remaining in the opening half, Keene State responded with back-to-back three-pointers to start the pivotal run Junior guard Shiwon Davis (Bridgeport, Conn./Bunnelle) drained the first three, his only field goal of the game, to ignite the run. Hickey followed with a three from the top of the circle for a quick, six-point swing for of the Owls. Junior guard Anthony Licitra (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) sank a baseline jumper to put the Owls ahead 36-29 with just over a minute to play before Hickey launched a deep three-pointer as the buzzer sounded for the 39-29 halftime score. For much of the second half, Keene State maintained 10 to 15-point advantage. The Huskies trimmed the Owl advantage to six, 63-57, with 4:30 left in the game following a three-pointer from senior guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and a short jumper in the lane from Gooding, but Keene State countered with five straight points to go ahead 68-57 with 2:37 remaining. From there, the Owls held off USM en route to the 79-65 win. Husson Downs Southern Maine 72-62
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior guard Jason Harvey (Bucksport, Maine/Bucksport) scored a game-high 15 points to lead four players in double figures as the Husson College Eagles downed the University of Southern Maine Huskies 72-62 in a non-conference basketball game Thursday night at the Warren Hill Gymnasium on USM’s Gorham campus. The win is the eighth in a row for the Eagles who improve to 19-5 overall. The loss drops Southern Maine to 6-18. Harvey was a perfect 9-for-9 from the free throw line en route to his game- high 15 points, and added two assists and three steals for the Eagles. Freshman guard Brock Bradford (Kenduskeag, Maine/Bangor Christian) added 12 points, while sophomore forward Scott Kissinger (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip) and junior guard Sheraud Lee (Bridgeport, Conn./Kolbe Cathedral) tossed in 11 points each. Freshman guard John Sewall (Bath, Maine/Cheverus) and junior forward Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) paced Southern Maine with 12 points each. Sewall added a game-high five assists while Gooding notched a double-double grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Senior guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury) chipped in with 10 points a piece. Coppenrath finished with nine rebounds as the Huskies won the battle on the boards 50-30. The teams battled evenly throughout the game. Husson, which led by five points at the half, never trailed in the second half. The Eagles were able to distance themselves from the Huskies late in the second stanza. Ahead by just four points, 59-55, following a three-pointer from Sewall at the 4:44 mark, Husson used an 8-3 run to lead USM by nine, 67-58, with 2:24 to play. The Eagles received points from four different players in the run. Forced to foul, the Huskies put the Eagles on the line, and Harvey responded by draining all five attempts from the charity stripe down the stretch. Husson finished the game shooting 41.1 percent (23-for-56) from the field and was 81.8 percent from the free throw line, making 18-of-22 free throws, including 13-of-15 in the second half. Southern Maine, hampered by 18 turnovers, shot just 37.9 percent (25-for-66) from the floor and was just 8-of-15 from the free throw line (53.3 percent). Southern Maine returns to action on Saturday (3:00 p.m.) when it travels to Keene State College for its final regular season game. UMass Boston Pounds Southern Maine 96-61
BOSTON -- Senior forward Tony Barros (Dorchester, Mass./Saint Sebastian’s) scored a game-high 26 points to lead four players in double figures as the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons cruised to a 96-61 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference basketball game Tuesday night at the Clark Athletic Center on the UMass Boston campus. With the win, UMass Boston avenges a January 23rd setback to the Huskies to improve to 9-14 overall and 5-8 in the LEC. Southern Maine dropped its sixth straight to fall to 6-17 overall and 2-11 in conference action. Barros was 9-for-17 from the field and added five rebounds, four assists and three steals. Sophomore center Rodney Bennett (Mattapan, Mass./Newton North) added 14 points and a team-high seven rebounds off of the bench. Junior guard Amigo Paniagua (Santiago, Dominican Republic/Dorchester) and freshman guard Anthony Matlock (Seattle, Wash./Franklin) chipped in with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy), who scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Huskies and added a game-high nine rebounds, was the only USM player to reach double digits in scoring. Sophomore forward Vince Tourville (Los Angeles, Calif./Maine Central Institute) scored eight point and grabbed six rebounds off of the bench for USM. UMass Boston was in control of the game from the start, racing out to a 43-21 lead at the halftime break. The Beacons limited the Huskies to just seven field goals in the first half on 24.1 percent shooting (7-for-29). Barros scored 14 of his 26 points, while junior center Eli Manna (Boston, Mass./Thayer Academy) scored all seven of his points as the Beacons shot a solid 42.9 percent (15-for-35) in the opening stanza. The Huskies were able to find their shooting touch in the second half, connecting on 17 of its 36 attempts from the field (47.2 percent), but it wasn’t enough as the Beacons outscored the Huskies 53-40 in the second half. UMB shot an impressive 57.1 percent (20-for-35) in the second half. Southern Maine returns to action on Thursday (7:00 p.m.) when it hosts Husson College in a non-conference game. Rhode Island College Surges Past Southern Maine 74-56
GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore guard Bobby Bailey (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) scored 16 points and grabbed five rebounds to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 74-56 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. With its third straight win, Rhode Island College improves its record to 19-3 overall and 10-2 in the LEC. Southern Maine dropped its fifth consecutive game to stand at 6-16 overall and 2-10 in the Little East. Bailey led all scorers with a 7-for-11 effort from the field. Sophomore forward Kaseem Johnson (New Haven, Conn./Hillhouse) added 10 points for the Anchormen, while seniors Anthony Pierlioni (Plainville, Conn./Plainville), Brian Stanko (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) and Kamari Williams (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) each chipped in with eight points. Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury) led four USM players in double-figures with 14 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Martin Jordan (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Hollywood Hills) added 12 points in his first collegiate start. Senior guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and junior forward Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) rounded out the USM offense with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Gooding finished with a double-double by also grabbing a career-high 14 rebounds. The Anchormen overcame an eight-point deficit at the 14-minute mark of the second half to surge past the Huskies. Following an offensive rebound and the put-back from Coppenrath, USM enjoyed its largest lead of the half, 49-41, with 13:57 on the clock. However, the Anchormen were able to come out of a timeout and outscore the Huskies 16-0 over the next six minutes to go ahead 57-49 with 8:06 remaining. Williams scored five of his 10 points in the decisive run as Rhode Island College received points from five different players. Southern Maine was able to snap its scoring drought on a jumper from Oakley with 7:51 to play to trail by six, 57-51, but Rhode Island College responded scoring the next 11 points of the game, including a pair of three-pointers from senior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, Maine/Telstar), to take a commanding 68-51 lead with 5:38 remaining. Southern Maine never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way as Rhode Island College cruised to the win. Rhode Island College finished the game shooting a respectable 45.1 percent from the field, making 32 of 71 field goal attempts. The Huskies shot 36.2 percent (21-for-58) and were hampered by 20 turnovers. Plymouth State Defeats Southern Maine 68-60
PLYMOUTH, N.H. -- Senior forward Mike Walcek (Dover, N.H./Dover) scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the Plymouth State University Panthers to a 68-60 Little East Conference win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday night at Foley Gym in Plymouth, N.H. Plymouth State improves its record to 9-13 overall and 2-9 in the Little East. Dropping its fourth straight game, Southern Maine dips to 6-15 overall and 2-9 in the LEC. Walcek was 5-for-10 from the floor en route to his game-high total. Senior forward Devin Ruocco (Dover, N.H./Dover) added 14 points for the Panthers. Junior guard Phil Bourassa (Old Orchard Beach, Maine/Biddeford) and sophomore center Sean Hanlon (Hampstead, N.H./Central Catholic) each chipped in with eight points. Hanlon finished with a game-high nine rebounds off of the bench. Junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) led two USM players in double-figures with a team-high 16 points to go along with three assists and two steals. Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury) added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Plymouth State jumped out to a 40-23 lead at halftime, shooting a solid 45.2 percent (14-for-31) from the field. Ruocco scored 12 of his 14 points in the opening half, knocking down five of his eight field goals attempts. The Panthers broke open a close game midway through the opening half. Ahead by two, 15-13, with 10:15 on the clock, Plymouth State outscored USM 25-10 over the next ten minutes to take the commanding halftime lead. Plymouth State led by as many as 23 points early in the second half and maintained at least a double-digit lead until the eight minute mark when the Huskies were able to cut into the deficit to trail by eight, 54-46 with 8:08 remaining. Down 50-27 with 15:26 remaining, USM outscored the Panthers 19-4 over the next seven minutes to pull itself within striking distance. Southern Maine junior center Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) netted all eight of his points in that span, including a pair of dunks to bookend the run. Plymouth State, however, was able to hold off the USM attack as the Huskies never got closer than five points the rest of the way. The Panthers received timely points from four different players over the final eight minutes of action, led by six points by Bourassa. Plymouth State shot 37.3 percent (22-for-59) from the field for the game, while USM finished the game shooting 46 percent (23-for-50). The Panthers outrebounded USM 42-28 and held a decisive advantage on the free throw line. The Panthers connected on 20 of its 27 attempts from the free throw line (74.1 percent) while Southern Maine made 11 of its 18 tries from the charity stripe (61.1 percent). Western Connecticut Downs Huskies 87-82
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman guard Tyshawn Gillespie (Hartford, Conn./Bassick) scored a team-high 29 points, including 16 points in the final eight minutes of the game, to lead the Western Connecticut State University Colonials to an 87-82, come-from-behind win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. With the win, Western Connecticut improves its overall record to 13-8 and moves to 7-3 in the Little East. Southern Maine drops its third consecutive game to dip to 6-14 overall and 2-8 in the LEC. Trailing by 20 points, 75-55, with eight minutes remaining in the contest, the Colonials, led by Gillespie, outscored the Huskies 31-5 down the stretch to earn the win. After a pair of free throws from junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) put USM up 75-55, Western Connecticut rolled off 15 unanswered points to pull within five, 75-70, with 4:30 remaining. Junior forward Jamie Procino (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) scored seven of his 20 points in the 15-point spurt for the Colonials, while Gillespie added six. Southern Maine junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) broke up the scoreless spell with a pair of free throws to give his team a 77-70 cushion with 3:52 to play, but the Huskies were able to score just three more points the rest of the game on a field goal and a free throw. Gillespie finished the game shooting 9-for-14 from the floor and was an outstanding 5-for-6 from three-point range. Procino added 20 points on a sparkling 8-for-9 effort and had a team-high seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Dashon Jennings (Bridgeport, Conn./Bassick) rounded out the Colonials in double- figures with 13 points. Daniels led the Huskies with a career-high 32 points, including a 5-for-6 mark from three-point range as four USM players hit double digits in scoring. Senior guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) added 14 points, five rebounds and six assists, and Coppenrath tossed in 12 points and grabbed a team- high seven rebounds. Western Connecticut finished with an outstanding 60 percent mark on 30-for-50 shooting, including a 72 percent effort in the second half, making 18 of 25 field goal attempts. St. Joseph's Downs Southern Maine 80-58
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior guard Marcus Alexander (Niceville, Fla./Nice- ville) led four players in double-figures with 19 points to lead the St. Joseph's College Monks (Maine) to an 80-58 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference basketball game Tuesday evening at the Warren Hill Gymnasium on USM's Gorham campus. With the win, St. Joseph's improves to 12-5 overall and secures the Costello Cup, presented to the winner of the annual contest between the two rivals. Southern Maine drops to 6-13 on the season. Alexander, who also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, was an outstanding 7-for-9 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw en route to his game-high total. Sophomores forward Elbie Murphy (Loudonville, N.Y./Albany) and guard R. J. Mattison (Hamden, Conn./Hamden) and graduate student Chad Pulkkinen (Windham, Maine/Windham) each scored 14 points each for the Monks. Sophomore guard Troy Gabriele (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills) led the Huskies with 11 points off of the bench. Junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) was the only other USM player to reach double figures with 10 points. The Monks shot a stellar 51.4 percent (18-for-35) in the first half to open a 40-29 lead at the break. Alexander scored nine of his 19 points in the opening stanza, and senior forward Colby Emmons (Portland, Maine/Portland) tossed in eight points. St. Joseph's scored the first seven points of the second half to increase its advantage to 18 points, 47-29. The Huskies never got closer than 14 points the rest of the way en route to the 80-58 final. The Monks finished the game shooting 52.5 percent (32-for-61) from the floor and were 40 percent (6-for-15) from beyond the three-point line. Southern Maine shot just 32.7 percent from the field, connecting on 18-of-55 field goals attempts, and was hampered by 16 turnovers. WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Senior guard Mike Parker (Windsor, Conn.) scored 16 of his team-high 23 points in the second half, including a pair of free throws in the final seconds of the game, to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 73-72 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium in Willimantic, Conn. With the win, Eastern Connecticut improves to 10-7 overall and inches above .500 in the LEC to stand at 5-4. The loss drops Southern Maine to 6-12 overall and 2-7 in conference action. Parker connected on 7-of-11 field goal attempts in the second half to help the Warriors erase a one-point halftime deficit. With his team ahead by two points, 71-69, Parker swished a pair of free throw attempts with just four seconds remaining to give the Warriors a four-point advantage, 73-69. USM junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) launched a three-pointer, trying to draw contact, at the buzzer that fell for the 73-72 final. Parker was one of two Eastern Connecticut players to surpass the 20-point mark as freshman guard Edwin Ortiz (Hartford, Conn.) finished the game with 21 points. Ortiz netted 17 of his 21 points in the first half with an outstanding 7-for-9 mark from the field. Daniels led all scorers netting 25 points for the Huskies, connecting on 7-of-10 field goals and sinking 9-of-10 from the charity stripe. Daniels added three assists and two steals for Southern Maine. Freshman guard John Sewall (Bath, Maine/Cheverus) added 12 points and four assists, and junior forward Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) narrowly missed a double-double with 10 points and nine rebounds. Coppenrath Leads Huskies Over UMass Boston 73-60
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johns- bury Academy) posted a double-double with a career-high 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 73-60 Little East Conference win over the University of Massachusetts Boston Beacons Tuesday evening at the Warren Hill Gymnasium on USM's Gorham campus. With the win, the Huskies improve to 6-11 overall and 2-6 in the Little East. The loss drops the Beacons even with USM at 6-11 overall and 2-6 in conference action. Coppenrath was 9-of-16 from the field and knocked down three three-pointers as the Huskies placed three players in double-figures. Senior guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) added a career-high 19 points with an impressive 5-for-8 mark from the three-point line to go along with four rebounds and three assists. Junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) played a solid all-around game for Southern Maine with 15 points, eight rebounds and six assists. UMass Boston senior forward Tony Barros (Dorchester, Mass./Saint Sebastians) netted a team-high 21 points and sophomore center Rodney Bennett (Mattapan, Mass./Newton North) finished as the only other Beacon in double figures with 10 points. Barros added six rebounds, two assists and a game-high five steals. Southern Maine raced out to a 17-point lead midway through the first half as it started the game on fire from the field, draining 10 of its first 16 field goals, including a remarkable 6-for-7 from three-point range, to lead 27-10 with 9:08 on the clock. UMass Boston clawed its way back within three points, 29-26, over the next six minutes, outscoring the Huskies 16-2. Barros was unstoppable in the Beacons' run, scoring 11 of his 21 points, including a pair of long-range threes. USM, however, was able to take a seven-point advantage into the break as Coppenrath drained two of his three three-pointers in the final two minutes of action. The Huskies were able to hold off the Beacons in the second half, never allowing the visitors closer than seven points. UMass Boston trailed USM 63-56 with 5:32 to play following an offensive rebound and put-back from Bennett, but Southern Maine outscored the Beacons 10-4 down the stretch to earn the 73-60 victory. UMass Dartmouth Sinks Southern Maine 64-62
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Freshman guard Tyler Turtoro (Shelton, Conn./Shelton) scored the game-winning lay-up as the shot clock wound down to lift the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs to a thrilling, 64-62 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Saturday afternoon at Tripp Athletic Center in North Dartmouth, Mass. With the win, UMass Dartmouth improves to 9-8 overall and 4-3 in the Little East. The loss drops Southern Maine to 5-11 overall and 1-6 in the LEC. In their first meeting this season, UMass Dartmouth gutted out a 75-70, overtime win in Gorham. Turtoro finished the game with a team-high 16 points on a sparkling 6-for-9 effort off of the bench. Turtoro was equally as impressive from beyond the arc, canning 4-of-7 to help UMass Dartmouth shoot 43.8 percent mark (7-for-16) from long range. Senior forward Paul Pawlowski (Taunton, Mass./Taunton), who assisted on Turtoro's game-winning lay-up, finished the game with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Sophomore guard Reece Freeman (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin) chipped in with 11 points, four assists and five steals. Southern Maine junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) led all scorers with 20 points on 8-for-12 shooting from the field. Coppenrath added eight rebounds and was 2-for-3 from three-point range while playing all 40 minutes for the Huskies. Junior forward Nick Gooding (Concord, Mass./Mount Diablo) recorded his fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Shooting 48.3 percent (14-for-29) from the field in the opening half, Southern Maine led UMD 35-22 at the half, and led by 14 points, 41-27, with 16:57 to play in the game before the Corsairs stormed back to earn the win. Led by 12 second-half points from Pawlowski, the Corsairs clawed their way back into the game as they shot a remarkable 62.5 percent (15-for-24) from the field in the second half, including a 4-for-8 mark from three-point range. Pawlowski's lay-up with 4:46 to play knotted the score at 53-53. After Pawlowski's game-tying basket, the game teetered back and fourth over the next three minutes with the lead exchanging hands four times. Southern Maine went ahead 62-60 with 1:13 to play as Coppenrath converted a lay-up off of an assist from Gooding, but UMass Dartmouth's Freeman countered with a lay-up of his own for the eighth tied score of the half, 62-62, with 1:04 left. In the Huskies next offensive possession, the Corsairs were able to come up with a defensive stop as freshman forward Matt Walker (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) stripped the ball from a USM player. Following a steal and a Corsair time-out, Turtoro was able to score the game-winner with two seconds left. GORHAM, Maine -- Junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) scored a season-high 26 points to lead four players in double figures as the University of Southern Maine Huskies defeated the Plymouth State University Panthers 81-74 in Little East Conference action Tuesday night at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. The win snaps a five-game losing skid for the Huskies who improve to 5-10 overall and 1-5 in the Little East. The Panthers dip below .500 with the loss at 8-9 overall and 1-5 in the LEC. Daniels was 9-of-16 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe, and added four assists, three steals and three rebounds to lead the Huskies to the win. Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) matched his career-high with 15 points, including a 3-for-4 mark from three-point range. With the win, Keene State remains undefeated atop the LEC standings with a 5-0 mark and improves to 13-1 overall. The win was the ninth straight for the high-flying Owls. Suffering their fifth consecutive loss, the Huskies dip to 4-10 overall and remain winless in the conference at 0-5. Kathan and Drouin were the only KSC players to score in double figures as the visitors used a well-balanced attack to down Southern Maine. Junior guard Anthony Licitra (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and sophomore center Eric Malkowski (Warwick, R.I./The Prout School) each scored eight points. Rhode Island College Edges Southern Maine 67-58
PROVIDENCE -- Senior guard Kinsey Durgin (Greenwood, Maine/Telstar) scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds, both team-high totals, to lead the Rhode Island College Anchormen to a 67-58 Little East Conference win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday night in Providence. Durgin led four Rhode Island College players in double figures as the Anchormen secured their eighth consecutive win to improve to 11-1 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference. The loss was the fourth in a row for the Huskies who dip to 4-9 overall and remain winless in the LEC at 0-4. Seniors Anthony Pierlioni (Plainville, Conn./Plainville), Kamari Williams (Springfield, Mass./Cathedral) and Brian Stanko (Swansea, Mass./Joseph Case) each scored 11 points for the Anchormen. With the win, the Colonials improved to 9-4 overall and remained undefeated in the LEC at 3-0. The loss was the third straight for the Huskies who dipped to 4-8 overall and 0-3 in conference action. Porcine was 7-for-12 from the field, and shared team-high rebounding honors with nine caroms, to lead five Colonials in double figures. STANDISH, Maine -- Senior forward Tyler Muzzy (Greenville, Maine/Green- ville) led all scorers with 24 points and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds to lead the Husson College Eagles to a 77-73 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in the consolation game of the 2006 MAINE EVENT tournament hosted by St. Joseph's College in Standish, Maine. Husson improves to 8-2 overall with the win. The Huskies drop their second consecutive game to fall to 4-7. It was the fourth loss this season for the Huskies by five points or less. Muzzy led three Eagles in double-figures shooting 9-for-15 from the floor and 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Freshman guard Martin Cleveland (Portland, Maine/Deering) added 19 points and six rebounds. Senior guard Jason Harvey (Bucksport, Maine/Bucksport) chipped in with 13 points, two assists and three steals. Junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) paced the Huskies with a team-high 17 points on an 8-for-12 effort from the field. The Huskies shot an outstanding 54.5 percent (12-for-22) in the opening stanza and were led by nine points from O’Neill and Coppenrath. Husson struggled from the floor in the first half making just 10 of its 27 field goal attempts (37 percent) but was able to keep pace with USM from the free throw line making 12-of-15. In the second half, Husson overcame its shooting woes to convert a sparkling 62.5 percent of its shots (15-for-24) en route to the win. Ahead by just a point, 44-43, following a three-pointer from USM senior guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue), Husson used a 12-3 run to distance itself from Southern Maine over a five-minute span to lead 57-46 with 9:26 on the clock. Muzzy started the Eagle run making a lay-up and a free throw and was followed by back-to-back jumpers from Cleveland for a seven-point swing. Daniels ended the Huskies’ scoring drought with a short jumper in the lane and sophomore guard Troy Gabriele (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills) made one free throw, but the Eagles answered right back with lay-ups from Muzzy and Cleveland. Southern Maine cut the lead to one twice in the final five minutes of action, trailing 67-66 with 3:31 to go in the game after a reverse baseline lay- up from Daniels, but the Eagles were able to hold the Huskies off down the stretch as Muzzy scored five of his 24 points in the final two minutes of the game. The win was the fourth in a row for the Mules who improved to 6-3 overall. The loss snapped the Huskies two-game winning streak and dropped them to 4-6. Gaudet shot 6-for-8 from the field and was an outstanding 3-for-4 from three-point range to lead the Mules. Freshman forward Adam Choice (Newport, Rhode Island/St. Georges School) added 15 points on 7-for-11 shooting from the field and senior guard Nick Farrell (Aspen, Colo./Aspen) tossed in 14 points for Colby. Senior center Drew Cohen (Briarcliff Manor, N.Y./Hackley School) chipped in with 11 point and a team-high eight rebounds. Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) led Southern Maine with 12 points and eight rebounds. Southern Maine's Whitaker Named Little East Conference Rookie of the Week
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman guard Greg Whitaker (Presque Isle, Maine/Presque Isle) of the University of Southern Maine Huskies men's basketball team has been named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week for the week of December 11-17. Whitaker averaged 11.0 points, six rebounds and two steals per game in a pair of non-conference wins for Southern Maine. Coming off of the bench against the University of Maine at Farmington, Whitaker scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds - both career-high totals - to lead the Huskies to a 66-53 win. In Southern Maine's 83-51 win over the University of New England earlier in the week, Whitaker registered eight points, including a perfect 4-for-4 mark from the free throw line, pulled down four rebounds and passed off three assists. "Greg is rapidly making the transition to the collegiate game," noted Southern Maine head coach Karl Henrikson. "With his continued improvement and hard work, Greg is going to become a very good player for us and will play a role in our team's development." On the season, Whitaker is averaging 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds, while shooting a solid 48.1 percent from the floor. Whitaker is also shooting 38.1 percent from three-point range and averaging 1.8 assists per game. Southern Maine, winners of its last two games, is currently 4-5 overall. Southern Maine Cruises Past UMaine Farmington 66-53
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Greg Whitaker (Presque Isle, Maine/Presque Isle) led three players in double figures scoring a career-high 14 points and grabbing eight rebounds as the University of Southern Maine Huskies downed the University of Maine at Farmington Beavers 66-53 in a non-conference men's basketball game Saturday at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. The win was the second in a row for the Huskies who improve to 4-5 overall. Suffering their second consecutive loss, the Beavers fall to 4-5. Whitaker, who was 5-for-7 from the floor, was joined by junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) and junior center Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) in double figures. Daniels tossed in 12 points and had a game-high five assists, while Gooding added 13 points, six rebounds and two blocked shots. Junior forward Sean Fry (Jay, Maine/Jay) led UMaine Farmington with 11 points and eight rebounds. Junior guard Matt St. John (Wayne, Maine/Maranacook) was the only other UMF player in double-figures netting 10 points. Junior forward Isaac Hutchinson (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) added nine points. Southern Maine took control in the early going, limiting UMaine Farmington to just three points in the opening eight minutes of the game to lead 17-3 with 12:31 remaining in the half. The Huskies shot a solid 43.3 percent (13-for-30) in the first half en route to a 31-23 halftime advantage. Daniels led the Huskies with seven points on a 3-for-5 mark from the field, while sophomore guard Charlie O'Neill (Seymour, Conn./Wilbraham & Monson) scored six of his nine points in the opening half. UMaine Farmington stayed on the Huskies heels in the opening minutes of the second half, trailing Southern Maine by nine, 35-26, with 16:51 to play, but USM used an 8-1 mini-run over the next two minutes to give itself a 16-point cushion, 43-27, with 14:24 to play. Southern Maine maintained a double-digit lead for most of the second half before a lay-up from sophomore forward Ted Neil (Strong, Maine/Mt. Blue) trimmed the Huskies advantage to nine, 60-51, with 2:40 remaining. USM countered with a jumper from Whitaker to start a 6-2 run to close out the game. GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore guard Charlie O'Neill (Seymour, Conn./Wilbraham & Monson) and junior guard Josh Daniel (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) combined for 37 points to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to an 83-51 win over the University of New England Nor'easters Tuesday night in a non-conference men's basketball game at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. The win snaps a five-game losing streak for Southern Maine and improved its record to 3-5 overall. The loss dropped the UNE to 1-7 overall. O'Neill was 4-for-6 from three-point range en route to a career-high 19 points. Daniels was 7-for-9 from the field to tally 18 points. Daniels also added a team-high six assists to lead a balanced attack for Southern Maine as all 12 of USM's players who entered the game scored at least two points. Junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy) scored nine points and grabbed six rebounds, while junior center Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) scored eight points, snagged a team-high nine rebounds and blocked three shots. UNE junior forward Isaac Stickney (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) posted a double-double to lead the Nor'easters Stickney scored 12 points on a 5-for-12 mark from the field and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds. Junior guard John Marriott (Fairfax, Vt./Bellows Free Academy) and sophomore forward Eric Field (Stratton, Maine/Mount Abram) each chipped in with 12 points a piece while senior forward Tom Button (Lyndeborough, N.H./Wilton-Lyndeborough) grabbed 10 rebounds. The Huskies took control of the game early in the first half on the heels of a 10-0 run to take a 15-3 lead with 13:07 remaining. O'Neill scored six points in the run, draining a three-pointer and then making a traditional three- point on an acrobatic lay-up after a full-court assist from Daniels. Daniels finished with 16 points in the first half and O'Neill finished with 12 to give the Huskies a commanding 42-28 lead heading into the break. USM shot an outstanding 51.7 percent (15-for-29), including a 6-for-14 effort from three- point range, in the opening stanza. UNE cut into the Southern Maine lead with a 9-2 run, led by four points from Stickney, to trail by seven, 44-37. O'Neill responded by nailing his fourth three-pointer of the game to push the USM advantage to 10 with 14:47 to play. Following the O'Neill three, USM scored seven unanswered points to lead by 17, 56-39, with 12:38 on the clock. Southern Maine's Coppenrath scored five of his nine points in the run, while O'Neill added a jumper. From there USM continued to click offensively, shooting 50 percent from the field over the final 12 minutes of the game to take the 83-51 lead while limiting UNE to just 5-for-21 (23 percent) shooting. Eastern Connecticut Battles Past Southern Maine 74-70
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior forward Leon Martin (Woodbury, Conn./Nonnewaug) scored seven of his 19 points in the final four minutes of the game to lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to a 74-70 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference men's basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Warren Hill Gymnasium. Martin was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line and was one of three Warriors in double-figures as Eastern Connecticut improved to 6-2 overall and 2-0 in the Little East. After winning its first two games of the season, the Huskies have dropped five straight to fall to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the Little East. Martin had a team-high eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks to go along with his 19 points. Freshman guard Edwin Ortiz (Hartford, Conn./East Catholic) led all scorers with a game-high 21 points, including five three- pointers. Senior guard Mike Parker (Windsor, Conn./Northwest Catholic) added 19 points, five rebounds and three assists. Four players reached double-digits for the Huskies, led by double-doubles from junior center Nick Gooding (Concord, Calif./Mount Diablo) and junior forward Drew Coppenrath (Barnet, Vt./St. Johnsbury Academy). Gooding and Coppenrath each scored 14 points for USM, while Gooding grabbed 11 rebounds and Coppenrath snagged a game-high 12 caroms. Freshman guard John Sewall (Bath, Maine/Cheverus) tossed in 12 points and three assists, and junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) chipped in 10 points and a game-high seven assists. Martin grabbed his own miss and scored on the put-back with four minutes left in the game to pull the Warriors into a 66-66 tie. Ortiz followed with his fifth three-pointer of the game off an assist from Martin for a quick five-point swing to put Eastern Connecticut ahead by three with 2:56 left to play. Gooding cut the lead to one, 69-68, connecting on a pair of free throws following a rebounding foul. Eastern Connecticut responded with a time-killing possession, grabbing a pair of offensive rebounds on its next trip down the court before Martin scored on a put-back and drew the foul to make the traditional three-point play giving the Warriors a 72-68 lead with 1:58 remaining. Daniels brought the Huskies to within two points, 72-70, with another set of free throws, but Eastern Connecticut was again able to cut 42 seconds off the clock in its next possession with another pair of offensive rebounds. The Warriors were unable to score, however, and Southern Maine had two looks at the basket in the final 28 seconds, but could not capitalize as Geoff Richardson (Hartford, Conn./Northwest Catholic) cleared the defensive glass on a USM missed shot with eight seconds remaining. Forced to foul, USM put Martin on the line in the final second of the game and he calmly sank two free throws for the 74-70 final. WATERVILLE, Maine -- Senior guard Nick Farrell (Aspen, Colo./Aspen) scored a game-high 26 points and passed off eight assists to lead the Colby College Mules past the University of Southern Maine Huskies 83-57 in a non- conference men’s basketball game Wednesday night at Wadsworth Gymnasium in Waterville, Maine. With the win, the Mules inched above .500 on the season with a 4-3 record. Suffering their fourth consecutive loss, Southern Maine dropped to 2-4. Farrell shot an outstanding 10-for-17 from the field, knocking down three three-pointers, to lead four Colby players in double figures. Junior Mark Gaudet (Bingham, Maine/Valley), sophomore Nick Palenta (Westwood, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) and freshman Adam Choice (Newport, R.I./St. Georges School) each scored 10 points for Colby. Coppenrath also had a team-high eight rebounds for the Huskies. Leading by just two, 34-32, at halftime, Colby broke open the close contest in the second half, outscoring the Huskies 49-25. The Mules did the bulk of their damage during a 31-7 run. Ahead by just a point, 38-37, following a lay-up and a free throw from Coppenrath, Colby got 13 points from Farrell and eight points from Choice to seize control of the game, 69-44, with 7:40 to play. From that point, the Huskies never got closer than 21 points the rest of the way. Colby shot a blazing 63.3 percent (19-for-30) in the second half. Colby finished the game shooting an impressive 55.7 percent (34-for-61) from the floor and 60 percent (9-for-15) from three-point range. UMass Dartmouth Edges Southern Maine 75-70 in Overtime
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior guard A.J. Tavares (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) scored five of his 16 points and senior center Dan Holbrook (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) netted four of his 16 points in extra period to lead the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs to a 75-70 overtime win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference game Saturday afternoon at Warren Hill Gymnasium. With the win, the Corsairs improve to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the Little East. Suffering their third consecutive loss the Huskies dip to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the LEC. The game was the conference opener for both teams. Tavares was 4-for-9 from three-point range with five steals for the Corsairs, while Holbrook was a force in the paint, shooting 7-for-14 from the floor while grabbing a team-high nine rebounds to go along with three assists and four steals. Sophomore guard Reece Freeman (Cambridge, Mass./Cambridge Rindge & Latin) and senior forward Stephane Abelard (Brockton, Mass./Brockton) added 11 points each while senior guard Paul Pawlowski (Taunton, Mass./Taunton) chipped in with 10 points. BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior guard Andrew Hippert (Spencer, Mass./St. John’s) scored 17 points and sophomore forward Kyle Jackson (Acton, Mass./Acton- Boxboro) added 13 to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 68-36 win over the University of Southern Maine Huskies Tuesday night at Morrell Gymnasium. Earning its fourth consecutive win, Bowdoin improves to 4-1 overall. Southern Maine dropped its second consecutive game to slip to 2-2. While neither team boasted an outstanding shooting percentage in the first half, Bowdoin managed to take a commanding 32-12 lead at the break. The Polar Bears shot 32.4 percent from the field (11-for-34) and were led by 10 points from Hippert. Southern Maine was held to single digits offensively until 16 minutes into the game as the Huskies shot an ice cold 21.7 percent (5-for-23) from the field. The Huskies shooting woes continued in the second half as they posted 24 points while shooting 29.6 percent (13-for-50) from the field. Hippert and Jackson were the only two Bowdoin players to reach double- digits in scoring, while forward Andrew Sargeantson (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) added eight points. Bates Cruises By Southern Maine 78-55
LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team scored the first 12 points of the game, jumped out to a 47-17 lead at the half and cruised to a 78-55 non-league victory over the University of Southern Maine Tuesday night at Alumni Gymnasium. Senior forward Rob Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) had 19 points and 13 rebounds, including 17 and 12 in the first half, while junior guard Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Bobcats (3-0), who avenged a 77-68 loss at Southern Maine a year ago. First-year guard John Sewall (Bath, Maine/Cheverus) scored a team-high 11 points for the Huskies (2-1), who shot only 7-for-28 (25%) from the field in the first half, but rebounded to outscore the Bobcats 38-31 in the second half. Bates hit on all cylinders in the opening minutes and shot 55.6 percent from the floor in the first half (20-36), including 50 percent (7-14) on 3- pointers. Stockwell was 8-for-11 in the first period, and Wholey hit all three of his three-point attempts for 13 first-half points. The Bobcats turned cold for a lengthy stretch of the second half, scoring eight points in eight minutes as the Huskies closed the gap from 54-19 to 62-39. Coppenrath led three Southern Maine players in double figures as the Huskies improve to 2-0 on the season, while UMaine Farmington dips to .500 at 1-1. Coppenrath was 7-for-10 from the floor en route to his career-high 15 points. Southern Maine Opens Season with 70-54 Win Over Lyndon State
FARMINGTON, Maine -- Senior forward Jamaal Caterina (Portland, Maine/Deering) scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a season-opening 70-54 win over the Lyndon State College Hornets Friday evening in the first round of the UMaine Farmington Hight Tournament at Dearborn Gymnasium in Farmington, Maine. With the win the Huskies open their 2006-2007 season with a 1-0 mark, while the Hornets start their campaign at 0-1. Caterina was one of three USM players to reach double-figures as the Huskies used a well-balanced attack with 11 players scored at least two points. Caterina was 5-for-14 from the field, including 3-for-5 from three-point range to pace USM. PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Rhode Island College edged out the University of Massachusetts-Boston by a single point for the top spot in the 2006-07 Little East Conference Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Poll. The Anchormen earned four of the seven first-place votes for a total of 45 points. All eight coaches in the conference circuit submitted their ballot, but could not vote for their own team. Under the direction of Head Coach Bob Walsh, Rhode Island College has won more games than any other team in the conference the past two campaigns (39), including an overall record of 19-10 in 2005-06. The Anchormen return seven upperclassmen from last season's squad that advanced to the ECAC New England Basketball Finals, including senior guard Kinsey Durgin. The 2005-06 Little East All-Conference first-team selection, Durgin averaged 13.2 points and 4.8 rebounds, while handing out 3.8 assists per game. Rhode Island College opens its 2006-07 slate at the Tufts Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 17, when the Anchormen face Endicott at 5 p.m., with a potential championship match looming against the 12th-ranked hosts the following afternoon. The University of Massachusetts-Boston received three first-place votes and a total of 44 points to secure the second position in the annual poll. Last season, the 2005-06 Little East Coach of the Year, Charlie Titus, led his charges to an overall record of 18-11, including a 10-4 mark in the conference circuit. The Beacons flourished in the Little East Tournament, defeating two of their three opponents by double digits, en route to capturing the championship and the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. UMass Boston welcomes back a pair of All-Conference first-team selections, including the 2005-06 Little East Player of the Year Tony Barros. The senior guard averaged 19.9 points and 5.8 rebounds, while dishing out 2.1 assists per game. The Beacons' start their defense of the conference crown at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 21, when they travel to Fitchburg State. Just seven points off the pace, Keene State College earned the final first- place vote and the third spot in the preseason standings. Last season, the Owls sat atop the final regular season standings with an overall record of 21-8. With an 11-3 mark in the League, Keene State earned the top-seed and right to host the Little East Tournament, where they reached the championship round. The Owls will look to 2005-06 All-Conference first-team pick junior guard David Sontag and Rookie of the Year sophomore forward Tyler Kathan to bolster their offensive attack. Sontag paced Keene State with 16.1 points per game, while Kathan also averaged double digits with 11.6. The Owls will be in action at 7 p.m. on Nov. 17, when Keene State hosts Eastern Nazarene in the opening round of the Keene State Tournament. The University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth rounds out the top-half of the preseason poll with 33 total points. The 2005-06 edition posted an overall record of 15-12, including 7-7 mark in the conference, finishing in the fifth slot. The Corsairs return three seniors from last season, including 2005-06 All- Conference second-team selection Dan Holbrook. Holbrook ended the season averaging a double-double, scoring 15.0 points and pulling in 10.7 rebounds per game. UMass Dartmouth has an opportunity to start strong out of the gates, holding home-court advantage in its first three games. The Corsairs will host Fitchburg State at 8 p.m. on Nov. 17. Just a total of seven points separate the final four clubs. Daniels, Oakley Named Southern Maine Men's Basketball Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Junior guard Josh Daniels (Everett, Wash./Maine Central Institute) and senior guard Foster Oakley (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) have been named co-captains of the 2006-2007 University of Southern Maine Huskies men's basketball team. Head coach Karl Henrikson made the announcement this week as the Huskies prepare for their season-opening contest at the UMaine Farmington Tip-Off Tournament against Lyndon State College on November 17. "Josh and Foster are both three-year veterans," commented Henrikson. "Their contributions in the past have been valuable to our development as a competitive program within the conference and regionally. We will count upon their leadership skills, both on and off the court, as we work towards our goals this season." Oakley, the only senior on this year's squad, played a significant role off of the bench as a junior averaging 7.3 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. An athletic, 6-1 guard, he played in all 26 games last season, including making eight starting appearances. Daniels, a 6-2 guard, earned second team All-Little East Conference and Maine Men's Basketball Coaches Association (MMBCA) honors during the 2005-2006 season. A versatile player with a knack for scoring, Daniels led the Huskies averaging 16.5 points per game while shooting 42.6 percent from the field. A threat from long range, Daniels also connected on 43.3 percent of his attempts from three-point range. He also was among the team leaders in rebounding (4.6 rpg), assists (2.1 apg) and steals (1.05 spg). In two seasons with the Huskies, Daniels has scored 535 points, grabbed 202 rebounds, passed out 94 assists and come up with 63 steals while shooting 42.7 percent from the floor. Southern Maine opens the 2006-2007 campaign on November 17 at the UMaine Farmington Tip-Off Classic. The Huskies will face Lyndon State College in their season-opener, then face either UMaine Farmington or Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts the next day. Southern Maine remains on the road for its next two contests traveling to Bates College on November 21 and Bowdoin College on November 28 before hosting Little East Conference opponent UMass Dartmouth in its home-opener on December 2. Southern Maine is back out on the road for a contest against Colby College on December 6, before hosting three straight home games against Eastern Connecticut on December 9, University of New England on December 12 and UMaine Farmington on December 16. Southern Maine closes out the month of December competing in The Maine Event hosted by St. Joseph's College (Maine). The Huskies will open the tournament playing Colby College on December 29, then face either St. Joseph's or Husson on December 30. In January, the Huskies will travel to their first two games, heading to Western Connecticut State on January 6 and Rhode Island College on January 9. The Huskies are home for back-to-back home dates with Keene State on January 13 and Plymouth State on January 16. Southern Maine travels to UMass Dartmouth on January 20, hosts UMass Boston on January 23, and heads to Eastern Connecticut State on January 27 before closing out the month with a home game against St. Joseph's College on January 30. The Huskies host Western Connecticut on February 3 and travel to Plymouth State on February 6 to open their February schedule. Rhode Island College comes to USM on February 10 for the Huskies' final regular season conference home game. The Huskies travel to UMass Boston on February 13, then host Husson College on February 15 in a non-conference game. Southern Maine closes out its regular-season on the road at Keene State College on February 17. The Little East Conference tournament begins with the quarterfinals on February 20. The LEC semifinals and championship will be held February 23-24, with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament. ################################################################################
