Anchormen Advance to Little East Conference Semifinals
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Rhode Island College Anchormen connected on 10 of

an 85-65 triumph over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a first round
game of the 2005 Little East Conference Men's Basketball Championship tournament
Tuesday night at the Murray Center in Providence.
The win advances the second-seeded Anchormen into Friday's semifinal round
against third seeded Plymouth State University, a 112-94 winner over the
University of Massachusetts Boston. Rhode Island College, which advances to the
LEC semifinals for the first time since the 1996-97 season, has won its last five
games and is 18-7 overall.
Southern Maine concludes its season at 9-17 overall.
Senior Andre Daley (Boston, Mass.) and freshman Davon Yarbrough (New Haven,
Conn.) paced the Anchormen with 16 points apiece while sophomore Kamari Williams
(Springfield, Mass.) and junior Kevin Payette (Woonsocket, R.I.) each had 15
points.
Freshman Josh Daniels (Seattle, Wash.) paced the Southern Maine effort with a
career-high 16 points. Senior Jason Levecque (Westbrook, Maine) added 15 and
senior Ryan Garland (Hermon, Maine) chipped in 10.
Southern Maine started strong leading by as many as seven (25-18) in the
first half as Daniels and Garland scored eight and six points respectively.
A 7-0 run by the Anchormen, highlighted by five points from Yarbrough, tied
the game at 25-25 with 7:55 left in the half. After a Daniels free throw broke
the run, Williams drained a three-pointer to give RIC the lead for good. The
Anchormen outscored the Huskies 6-0 over the final three minutes to take a 42-31
lead to the locker room at the break.
The Huskies stayed within striking distance until midway through the second
half when the Anchormen went on a 7-0 run to push their lead to 55-40 as Williams
converted a layup with 11:16 to play.
An 11-3 run by the Huskies, including five points from Daniels, got them back
with seven (58-51 ) with 7:38 to go. Williams broke USM's momentum with another
three-pointer for RIC.
Senior Jason Harris (Bedford, Mass.) converted four free throws to ignite a
9-2 run late in the game to effectively ice the game, giving the Anchormen a 78-59
lead with 1:39 to play.
Rhode Island College finished the game shooting 44.6 percent from the floor
(25 of 56), including 55.6 percent from three-point territory. RIC came into the
game converting 34.7 percent of its three-point shots for the season. The

Levecque, Huskies Sink Plymouth State 88-87
GORHAM, Maine - Senior guard Jason Levecque (Westbrook, Maine/Westbrook)
powered in a layup with seven seconds left in the game to lift the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to an 88-87 upset win over the Plymouth State University
Panthers in a Little East Conference tilt Tuesday night at the Warren G. Hill
Gymnasium.
With the win Southern Maine improves to 9-15 overall and 4-9 in the LEC.
Plymouth State drops to 17-7 overall and 9-4 in conference action. Suffering
their second straight conference loss, the Panthers slipped into a three-way tie
atop the conference standings with Rhode Island College and Western Connecticut
State University.
In a game with nine ties and 14 lead changes, Levecque's clutch heroics began
with 30 seconds to play when he drilled a three-pointer to give the Huskies a two-
point edge at 86-84 following senior forward Ryan Garland's (Hermon, Maine/Hermon)
game-high 10th assist. The Panthers answered right back, however, with senior
guard Nick Pelotte's (Bingham, Maine/Valley) third three-ball of the game to swing
the score in favor of Plymouth State, 87-86.
Following a 30-second time out, the Huskies inbounded the ball and took it
the length of the floor where a driving Mike Francoeur (Somersworth, N.H.) dished
off to a slashing Levecque for the game-winner. Levecque was fouled on the play,
but did not convert the free throw. Pelotte took a jumper from the left of the
key as time expired, but missed, and Southern Maine junior forward Jesse McKinnell
(Manomet, Mass./Scituate) grabbed the rebound - his seventh of the game - as the
buzzer sounded.
Levecque and Francoeur paced the Huskies tallying 20 points each to lead five
Huskies in double-figures. Francoeur also had six assists and three steals for
Southern Maine. Junior forward Bill Hardwick (Boothbay, Maine/Boothbay Region)
scored 16 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in another tremendous
effort off of the bench for the Huskies, while Garland and McKinnell chipped in
with 10 points each.
Pelotte finished the game with a double-double on 25 points and 13 rebounds,
both game-highs, and added six assists and three steals. Panther sophomore
forward Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y./St. Edmund Prep) was 10-of-14 from the floor
en route to a 23-point, 9-rebound performance, while junior guard Mark Dunham
(Salem, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) and junior center Kevin Boutilier (North Andover,
Mass./North Andover) added 12 and 10 points respectively.
The Huskies finished the game shooting 52.5 percent (31-59) from the field
including a blazing 64 percent (16-25) effort in the second half to earn the win.
Plymouth State shot 47.9 percent from the field connecting on 35-of-73 attempts.
Southern Maine returns to action on the road at UMass Dartmouth, Saturday at
3:00 p.m. The Panther also play on the road on Saturday at Western Connecticut
State.

Late Run Gives Eastern Connecticut Edge Over Southern Maine, 80-73
WILLIMANTIC, Conn. -- Junior Michael Stallings (Waterbury, Conn.) and
senior Mike Bartunek (Durham, Conn.) combined for 44 points off the bench to
lead the Eastern Connecticut State University Warriors to an 80-73 victory over
the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a Little East Conference Sunday
afternoon at Geissler Gymnasium in Willimantic, Conn.
The win lifts the Warriors to 7-14 overall and 3-9 in the conference with
one week left in the regular season. Southern Maine dropped its fourth straight
game to fall to 8-15 overall and 3-9 in the conference.
The game was a see-saw affair throughout as each team held the lead at
various times, but it was a decisive 12-2 run by the Warriors and some poor free
throw shooting by the Huskies late in the game that proved to be the difference.
With the game tied at 59-59 with 6:08 to play after junior Bill Hardwick
(Boothbay, Maine) made a base line jumper for USM, the Warriors took the lead
for good as Stallings scored on a layup. Sophomore Leon Martin (Woodbury,
Conn.) followed with a basket and two free throws to increase the lead to six.
After a Ryan Garland (Hermon, Maine) basket cut the lead to four with 3:34 to
go, Bartunek buried a three-pointer from the corner to up the margin to seven.
The Huskies had a pair of one-and-one situations over the next 30 seconds,
but failed to convert the front end on both occasions. Stallings made them pay
with a three-pointer to give the Warriors a 10-point edge (71-61) with 1:56 to
play.
A 6-0 run, sparked by a Hardwick basket and four points from freshman Josh
Daniels (Seattle, Wash.) got USM within four (71-67) with 1:10 to go, but ECSU
made 9 of 12 free throws in the final minute to preserve the win.
In the opening half, Southern Maine enjoyed a 10-0 run midway through the
half to erase a four-point deficit and take a six-point lead (22-16). Hardwick,
who had a career-high 24 points in the game, scored six points during the run.
Eastern Connecticut answered back with a 15-2 run over the final 3:11 to
take a 38-30 lead into the locker room at the break. Bartunek, who made 5 of 7
three-point tries in the game, buried three trifectas and Stallings added four
points during the run.
An 11-0 run by the Huskies early in the second half wiped out a seven-point
ECSU lead (44-37) and gave the visitors a 48-44 advantage with 14:04 to play.
Hardwick had four points in the run. Neither team would lead by more than four
until the Warriors decisive run.
Hardwick connected on 10 or 16 shots from the field on the way to his 24
points to lead the Huskies. Senior guard Jason Levecque (Westbrook, Maine)
added 17 and Daniels finished with 11 points.
Stallings made 6 of 10 shots from the floor and converted 12 of 15 free
throws for his game-high 26 points. Bartunek finished with 18 points. Martin
contributed a “double-double” with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Jeroy
Smith (New Haven, Conn.) added 11 points.
Southern Maine closes out the regular season this week with a home game
Tuesday against Plymouth State University and a road game Saturday at the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Eastern Connecticut has a game at Keene
State College on Tuesday before closing the regular season at home on Saturday.
The Little East Conference championship tournament will begin on February
22 at on-campus sites of the top four seeded teams. The semifinals and finals
will be hosted at the highest seeded team remaining February 25-26. The winner
of the tournament receives an automatic berth into the 2005 NCAA Division III
Men’s Basketball Championship tournament.

with 3:50 to play gave the Plymouth State University Panthers the lead for good
as the Panthers outscored the upset-minded University of Southern Maine Huskies
17-6 over the final four minutes en route to an 84-74 victory in a Little East
Conference game Tuesday night at the James C. Foley Gymnasium in Plymouth, N.H.
The win improves the Panthers record to 12-5 overall and 6-2 in the
conference. Southern Maine, which had its three-game winning streak snapped,
dips to 7-10 overall and 3-4 in the conference. Plymouth State has won the last
seven meetings between the two teams which meet again February 15 at USM.

the eight points.
The Huskies protected the lead for the next 14 minutes, leading by as many
as six on a pair of occasions, until Walcek went to line with less than four
minutes to play. Walcek’s charity tosses were part of an 8-0 Panther run that
erased a three-point deficit (68-65) and established a five-point lead (73-68)
with 2:36 left in the game.
Plymouth State, led by the high-scoring tandem of senior Nick Pelotte
(Bingham, Maine) and sophomore Andreas Pope (Brooklyn, N.Y.), converted 7-of-7
free throws around a Pope offensive rebound and basket in the final 1:36 to
preserve the win. The 10-point margin at final buzzer was the largest lead for
either team in the game.

rebounds for a “double-double.” Walcek contributed 14 points, including a 6-
for-6 performance at the foul line, and junior Peter Hutchins (New London, N.H.)

and a perfect 7-for-7 mark from the charity stripe to lead the University of
Southern Maine Huskies to a 80-70 win over the Salem State College Vikings in a

Southern Maine Holds Off Eastern Connecticut 70-68
GORHAM, Maine - Senior guard Jason Levecque (Westbrook, Maine) iced two free
throws to put the University of Southern Maine Huskies ahead 69-67 with 59 seconds
remaining to fend off a surging Eastern Connecticut State University squad,
leading Southern Maine to a conference-opening 70-68 win over the Warriors.
With the win Southern Maine improves to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the Little
East Conference. Dropping its third consecutive game, Eastern Connecticut falls
to 3-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.
Levecque led all scorers with a game-high 20 points and four steals. Senior
guard Mike Francoeur (Somersworth, NH/Cheshire) added 17 points and freshman guard
Josh Daniels (Seattle, Wash./Maine Central Institute) chipped in with 12 points
for the Huskies. Southern Maine finished the game shooting 52 percent from the
field by connecting on 23 of 48 shots.
The Huskies seemed to have the game in hand taking a 14-point lead with just
over nine minutes remaining when junior forward Jesse McKinnell (Manomet,
Mass./Scituate) connected on back-to-back free throws to give Southern Maine a
commanding 59-45 lead, but Eastern Connecticut refused to fade away surging back
into the game.
The Warriors would connect on four three-pointers, outscoring the Huskies
22-8, over the next seven minutes of action to knot the game up at 67 points
apiece. Eastern Connecticut's Geoffrey Richardson (Hartford, Conn./Northwest
Catholic) sparked the Warriors connecting on two of his three three-pointers in
the run while forward Tim Callahan (Clinton, Conn./The Morgan School) displayed
his range hitting the nets for back-to-back trifectas. Richardson ended the night
as the Warriors leading scoring with 15 points, while Callahan had 14 points, five
rebounds and three assists.
Callahan's driving lay-up with 2:21 remaining was the equalizer for the
Warriors, but a turnover off of a McKinnell steal and a foul from Eastern
Connecticut's Matt Albon (Middlebury, Conn./Holy Cross) put Levecque and the game
on the line. Eastern Connecticut had a chance to tie the game with 34 seconds
remaining after Callahan reached the free throw line, but he managed just one of
two from the charity stripe, and after a Daniels free throw for the 70-68 final
the Huskies held on for the win.

Bowdoin appeared to be putting away the contest early in the second frame as

three-pointer by Francoeur to cut the Bowdoin edge to 53-50 with 11 minutes left.
Bowdoin responded with a 9-2 run, keyed by a John Goodridge three, but the Huskies
failed to go away.

advantage into the break as the Eagles' Tyler Muzzy (Greenville, Maine) scored
nine of his game-high 24 points in the first half, including three points on a
lay-up and a free throw to spur Husson's 6-0 run in the final minute of play.
Husson pushed the lead to seven at 34-27 on a Muzzy 's lone three ball of the
game 45 seconds into the second half, before Southern Maine countered with a 10-2
run over the next minute and a half to take a slim lead at 37-36 with 17 minutes
to go on the clock. Francoeur and Daniels each scored five points a piece, while
Ryan Garland (Hermon, Maine/Hermon) had three of his team-high five assists and
tallied one of his game-high eight steals to put the Huskies back in the game.
Garland finished the game with four points, five rebounds, five assists and eight
steals.
The lead changed hands five times over the next five minutes as both teams
traded baskets before the Huskies took control of the game with 13 minutes to play
and the score knotted up at
43-43. After a Muzzy turnover, Levecque converted a steal and the lay-up to jump-
start the decisive 18-6 run giving Southern Maine a commanding 12-point lead at
61-49 with just under six minutes remaining. Levecque scored seven of his 21
points on back-to-back lay-ups, a free throw and another lay-up, while McKinnell
tallied six of his 10 points on two short jumpers and a lay-up in the run. Husson
hurt its own cause committing six of its 26 turnovers in that span to help the
Huskies pull away with the game.

the rest of the way as Southern Maine rode Francoeur's 10-for-10 effort from the
free throw line in the final minutes to ice the game.
Husson's Jeff White (Etna, Maine) chipped in with 13 points and eight
