ECAC Division III New England Quarterfinal
No. 2 University of New England Defeats No. 7 University of Southern Maine 5-2
Huskies’ Lowe Ends Career Setting Breaking Two Records
BIDDEFORD, Maine – Senior forward Taryn Flagg (Livermore Falls, Maine)
scored two goals and added an assist to lead the second-seeded University of New
England Nor’easters to a 5-2 win over the seventh-seeded University of Southern
Maine Huskies Wednesday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) New England Field Hockey Championship in
Biddeford, Maine.
The loss concludes the Huskies season with a 10-11 record overall. The
University of New England improves to 14-3 and advances to the semifinals of the
ECAC Division III New England Championship tournament and will face sixth-seeded
Endicott College Gulls. The Gulls advanced to the semifinals with a 2-0 win
over the third-seeded Framingham State College Rams.
Flagg helped the Nor’easters to an early 1-0 lead just 2:18 into the
contest when she fed sophomore forward Brianna Tupper (Winthrop, Maine) for her
13th goal of the season. UNE junior forward Michaela Franey (York, Maine)
doubled the advantage converting a penalty stroke in the 26th minute, before
Flagg gave UNE a 3-0 lead in the 30th minute off of a Franey assist. UNE took a
4-0 lead into the half as junior midfielder Cassandra Bushey (North Hartland,
Vt./Hartford) knocked in an unassisted goal in the 33rd minute.
USM scored the first two goals of the second half to trim its deficit to 4-
2. Sophomore forward Whitney McDaniel (Livermore, Maine/Livermore Falls)
tallied her seventh goal of the season in the 53rd minute off of an assist from
classmate Heidi Swett (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) for the Huskies first goal of
the game. Senior forward Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine) netted the second
USM goal in the 61st minute tapping in an assist from senior forward India Lowe
(Gloucester, Mass.).
With her assist, Lowe set Southern Maine records for both single season and
career assists. Lowe’s assist to Albert was her 12th of the season, breaking
the previous record of 11 held by former USM standout Becky Manson (1998-2001),
and her 24th of her career, breaking the previous record of 23 held by former
four-time All-Region player Renée Heath (2000-2003). The assist also marked
Lowe’s 100th career point.
However, UNE’s Flagg halted any thoughts of a rally for USM in the 64th
minute when she rolled up her 19th goal of the season off of an assist from
Bushey for the final score.
USM senior goalkeeper Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) made seven saves
in the loss before being lifted for junior Rachel Lolley (Gorham, Maine) in the
final 10 minutes of the game. Lolley made one save and allowed one goal. UNE
junior goalkeeper Ayla Nelson (Auburn, Mass.) made eight saves in the victory.

GORHAM, Maine -- Six different players scored a goal as the University of
Southern Maine Huskies rolled to a 6-0 win over the Gordon College Fighting
Scots Thursday afternoon in a non-conference field hockey game at Paula D.
Hodgdon Field in Gorham.
The win is the second in a row for the Huskies who improve their overall
record to 2-2. Gordon suffers its fourth straight defeat with the loss to
remain winless at 0-4. Southern Maine’s six-goal outburst is its highest goal

November in the Little East Conference tournament by an identical score. The
USM record for goals in a game is nine set against UMaine Fort Kent in 1973.
Senior forward Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine) put Southern Maine on

Swett (Turner, Maine/Leavitt Area) converted an assist from sophomore back
Bethany Bougie (Sanford, Maine) on a penalty corner.
The Huskies continued to click offensively in the second half upping their
lead to 4-0 on well-executed play from senior forward India Lowe (Gloucester,
Mass.) and Albert. Albert carried the ball down the field and found a sprinting
Lowe in front of the goal in the 48th minute. USM led 5-0 in the 53rd minute
after a fantastic individual effort from Bougie to bring the ball from the back
down the right side of the field, before placing a strong pin-point pass to
freshman Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine/Hebron Academy) for her team leading third
goal of the season. Freshman forward Rachel Trafton (Corinth, Maine/Central)
capped the USM scoring notching her second goal of the season in the 66th
minute.

Hill and Lowe Named USM Field Hockey Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior goalkeeper Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and
senior forward India Lowe (Gloucester, Mass.) have been named co-captains of the
2009 University of Southern Maine Huskies field hockey team. Veteran head coach

straight LEC Championship semifinal game in 2008 before being edged out in
overtime by the eventual champion Keene State. The Huskies return 13 players

three seasons,” noted Brown-Denico. “They work exceptionally hard in practices
and have been terrific on-the-field leaders. They have demonstrated a level a
maturity and ownership over this year’s team in our preseason practices and have

Owls Perched Atop Little East Field Hockey Preseason Poll
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. - For the fifth consecutive campaign, Keene State
College earned at least a share of the top position in the annual Little East
field hockey preseason poll after each of the 12 head coaches casted a vote. The
Owls received nine first-place tallies and 139 total points to stand alone in
the coaches? survey for the sixth time in the past 11 seasons.
Plymouth State University (128) edged the University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth (127) by a single point for the second seed in the preseason rankings.
The Panthers finished in the top-three in each of the 12 ballots, including one
first place vote, to surpass the Corsairs. The University of Southern Maine was
the only other institution to eclipse the 100-point mark, totaling 101 to secure
the fourth position.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Amy Watson, Keene State College continued
its dominance of the conference circuit, raising the program?s fifth
consecutiveand seventh overall conference championship trophy last season. Over
the past seven seasons, the Owls have not lost more than two Little East games
to boast a record of 67-7 (.905), including sweeping the conference schedule
twice (2006, 2003). The 2008 edition was no different as Keene State clinched
the top seed in the Little East Championship Tournament for the third
consecutive campaign with a 10-1 mark. The Owls held their home field advantage
throughout the eight-teamtournament, culminating with a 4-0 victory over
Plymouth State in the finals.
Watson led Keene State into its fifth straight NCAA Division III Tournament
appearance, where they fell in the opening round at Springfield College, 1-0.
The Owls return an experience group of 22 student-athletes, including a pair of
30-plus scorers. First team all-league forward, Carly Benning (Brewster, Mass.)
will lead the Owl offense after her 33-point 2008 campaign. Keene State will
begin its title defense when the Owls host Rensselaer at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1.
Last season, Plymouth State made its seventh overall appearance in the
Little East championship match and first since 2004. The Panthers reached double
digits in victories for the seventh time in the past eight seasons, registering
an overall record of 15-8 (8-3). Plymouth State?s success in the regular season
earned Head Coach Bonnie Lord and her charges the second seed in the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Championship, where
the Panthers reached the championship game. Lord will welcome back 16 student-
athletes from the 2008 edition, including 10 starters. Plymouth State will open
the season at Endicott College at 1 p.m. on Sept. 5 in a rematch of the 2008
ECAC title game.
Head Coach Nicole Castonguay helped lead UMass Dartmouth (16-6) to a 10-win
turnaround from the 2007 campaign and a share of second place in the final
conference standings with an 8-3 mark. The Corsairs were just one win shy of
matching the program's single-season record, set by the 2006 squad (17-4). Last
year, UMass Dartmouth ranked second in the conference in scoring average (2.81
goals per game). Junior forward Stephanie Kinchla (Falmouth, Mass.), the
offensive player year, was the offensive catalyst for the Corsairs, scoring 56
points on 23 goals and 10 assists. Her 56-point season was the third highest by
any Little East student-athlete in the 11-year history of the conference. UMass
Dartmouth will open the season on the road, traveling to MIT on Sept. 5 for a 12
p.m. faceoff.
Southern Maine advanced to its third straight Little East Championship
semifinal round match in 2008 before being edged in the overtime by the eventual
champions. Head Coach Bonny Brown-Denico led her Huskies to an overall record of
10-11, marking the third consecutive season with at least 10 victories. Southern
Maine will welcome back 13 student-athletes back into the fold from a year ago,
including the senior scoring tandem of Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine) and
India Lowe (Gloucester, Mass.). Albert and Lowe combined to account for 48.6
percent (52-of-107) of the Huskies? offense as each player registered 26
points.
Albert led the team in goals (11), while Lowe handed out a team-best six
helpers. Southern Maine will host the University of New England at 4 p.m. on
Sept. 1 to open the 2009 schedule.
Westfield State College (84) and Bridgewater State College (80) are just
separated by four points for the fifth spot. The Owls (12-8) completed the 2008
campaign in a four-way tie for fourth place with a conference mark of 6-5, while
the Bears (7-11) clinched the eighth and final seed in the championship
tournament with a 5-6 mark.
The top eight teams in the final regular season standings advance to the
2009 Little East Field Hockey Championship Tournament with the four highest
seeds hosting a quarterfinal round contest on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Two days later,
the four winners advance to the semifinals at the two highest remaining seeds.
