Three USM Field Hockey Players Named All-Little East

GORHAM, Maine -- Three members of the University of Southern Maine field hockey squad
were named to the first-ever All-Little East Conference all-star team following a vote by the
conference's five field hockey head coaches. Albert D. Bean Jr., commissioner of the Little East
Conference, made the announcement late Wednesday (November 4) afternoon.
Named to the all-conference team were junior forward Alison Drury (Canton, Maine/Dirigo
HS), junior midfielder Kim Cochrane (Biddeford, Maine) and senior back Sara Sleeper
(Montpelier, Vt.). There was only one all-star team selected because only five of the eight
conference schools play field hockey.
Drury was the team's leading scorer with eight goals, including three game winners, and six
assists for 22 points. She became the tenth player in the 32-year history of the program to score
three goals in a single game when she netted all three USM goals in a 5-3 decision at St. Michael's
College.
Cochrane had her best offensive year this season with two goals, including her first career
game winning goal, and three assists for seven points. She also led the team with seven defensive
saves.
Sleeper, a four-year starter, has been a standout for the past three seasons as the Huskies
sweeper back. She scored the first two points of her career this season notching a pair of assists in
a September game against Eastern Connecticut.
"All three had outstanding seasons for us this year," said first-year head Bonny Brown-Denico
who guided the Huskies to a 9-12 final record and a spot in the Little East tournament semifinals.
"Alison leads by example and has a great sense of when to pick up the tempo. She was the
key to our offensive success this season.
"Kim is a very motivated, consistent player who will continue to get even better next year as a
senior. Sara has been one of the toughest backs we've had at USM, and she consistently came up
with the ball in one-on-one situations."
Southern Maine finished the season 9-12 overall and 1-3 in the Little East Conference. The
Huskies defeated Eastern Connecticut in the first round of the playoffs before being eliminated by
eventual champion Keene State in the semifinals.

goalie Michelle Fernald (Portland, Maine) to finish off a swift counter attack by the Owls who had
just withstood some relentless pressure from the Huskies who took 49 shots in the game.

Kurro's (Palmyra, Maine/Nokomis Regional) deflection of junior Kim Cochrane's (Biddeford,
Maine) drive five minutes into the second half to slip past her. The goal was Kurro's third of the
season. Bonner later stopped a penalty stroke taken by senior Shana Gordon (Turner, Maine/

University of Southern Maine field hockey team have been named tri-captains for the upcoming
1998 season. First-year head coach Bonny Brown-Denico made the announcement.
The Huskies report to preseason training camp this Sunday (August 23) and will begin two-a-
day workouts the next day. Southern Maine opens its 1998 season September 5-6 hosting the
USM Invitational Tournament.
Cochrane, a center midfielder, had three assists and tied for the team lead with four
defensive saves in her first season as a starter. Over her first two seasons, Cochrane has collected
four assists.
Drury, a forward, is the team's top returning scorer. She netted six goals and six assists for 18
points last fall to finish third on the Huskies' score sheet behind departed forwards Meredith Bradley
and Paula Reed. In two seasons, Drury has tallied 12 goals and six assists for 30 career points.
Gordon, a right midfielder, is one of only three seniors on the Huskies preseason roster. A
three-year starter, Gordon had one goal and two assists for four points in 1997. In 58 career games,
she has scored two goals, including one game winner, and been credited with seven assists.
The Huskies three captains bring a variety of strengths and styles to their new leadership
roles.
"Kim speaks up when needed, and she takes charge when needed. She's a hard worker
who expects the others to work as hard," says Brown-Denico.
"Alison is one of the hardest working players on the team. She will be the quiet leader, the
one who leads by example.
"Shana is a very consistent, dependable player. She's not flashy, but she gets the job done.
She's a good team motivator. When she came in as a freshman (in 1995), she was identified as a
future captain by (former head coach) Paula (Hodgdon)."
The remainder of the Huskies' 1998 schedule is as follows: Sept. 12, Wheaton; Sept. 15,
New England College;  Sept. 19, at Bridgewater State College;  Sept. 24, Salem State College;
Sept. 26, at Eastern Connecticut; and Sept. 29, Plymouth State College.
Also, Oct. 1, at Bentley; Oct. 3, at UMass Dartmouth; Oct. 7, Bowdoin; Oct. 10, at Clark; Oct.
11, at Fitchburg State College;  Oct. 13, at St. Joseph's (Maine);  Oct. 15, at UMaine Farmington;
Oct. 17, Keene State College; Oct. 21, at Colby; Oct. 24, at St. Michael's; and Oct. 27, at Bates.
The Huskies also will be playing under the banner of the Little East Conference for the first
time. The five field hockey-playing schools will conduct an end-of-the-season tournament based
upon the regular season standings. The fourth and fifth place teams will play a first round match
Oct. 29. The winner advances to semifinals Oct. 31 to play the top seeded team. The second and
third seeds will play the same date. The winners advance to the conference championship game
Nov. 1.

Two USM Student-Athletes Among the More Than 370 Student-Athletes
Selected for 1998 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference

GORHAM, Maine -- Two University of Southern Maine student-athletes, sophomore field
hockey player Kimberly Cochrane of Biddeford and junior baseball player Michael McCullum
of Portland, have been selected to participate in the second annual NCAA Foundation Leadership
Conference, presented by Entergy Corporation.
Cochrane and McCullum will attend the conference which will be held May 25-28, 1998, at
Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. They are the third and fourth USM
student-athletes selected to participate in the annual conference. Field hockey standout Heather
Gilmour and three-time ice hockey captain Edward Pike participated in the 1997 conference.
Cochrane, a member of USM's Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), played in all 21
games last fall and was credited with three assists and tied for the team lead in defensive saves with
four. She helped the Huskies to a 12-9 record and a berth in the ECAC Division III tournament.
McCullum, a three-year starter for the Huskies' baseball team, hit .333 with six doubles, two
triples, one home run and 27 RBI during the team's 1997 national championship season. The
speedy outfielder, who is making the transition to third base this season, led the team with 22 stolen
bases last season.
The conference is designed to "provide the opportunity for NCAA student-athletes to discuss
and explore viable solutions to critical issues facing their peers around the country; to enhance their
leadership skills; and to promote better communication among student-athletes, coaches,
administrators, faculty and communities" according to a press release from the NCAA announcing
those student-athletes selected to participate.
The 1998 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on topics recommended by
last year's participants as well as by recommendations of the Divisions I, II, and III NCAA Student-
Athlete Advisory Committees.
This year's list of conference speakers includes Robin Roberts, anchor and sports
commentator for ABC and ESPN; Tom Curley, publisher of USA Today; Cedric Dempsey, executive
director of the NCAA and Quinn Buckner, ESPN commentator and a member of the 1976 NCAA
Division I men's basketball championship team.
