Two USM Student-Athletes Among the More Than 370 Student-Athletes
Selected for 1998 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference

GORHAM, Maine -- Two University of Southern Maine student-athletes, sophomore field
hockey player Kimberly Cochrane of Biddeford and junior baseball player Michael McCullum
of Portland, have been selected to participate in the second annual NCAA Foundation Leadership
Conference, presented by Entergy Corporation.
Cochrane and McCullum will attend the conference which will be held May 25-28, 1998, at
Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. They are the third and fourth USM
student-athletes selected to participate in the annual conference. Field hockey standout Heather
Gilmour and three-time ice hockey captain Edward Pike participated in the 1997 conference.

games last fall and was credited with three assists and tied for the team lead in defensive saves with
four. She helped the Huskies to a 12-9 record and a berth in the ECAC Division III tournament.
McCullum, a three-year starter for the Huskies' baseball team, hit .333 with six doubles, two
triples, one home run and 27 RBI during the team's 1997 national championship season. The
speedy outfielder, who is making the transition to third base this season, led the team with 22 stolen
bases last season.
The conference is designed to "provide the opportunity for NCAA student-athletes to discuss
and explore viable solutions to critical issues facing their peers around the country; to enhance their
leadership skills; and to promote better communication among student-athletes, coaches,
administrators, faculty and communities" according to a press release from the NCAA announcing
those student-athletes selected to participate.
The 1998 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on topics recommended by
last year's participants as well as by recommendations of the Divisions I, II, and III NCAA Student-
Athlete Advisory Committees.
This year's list of conference speakers includes Robin Roberts, anchor and sports
commentator for ABC and ESPN; Tom Curley, publisher of USA Today; Cedric Dempsey, executive
director of the NCAA and Quinn Buckner, ESPN commentator and a member of the 1976 NCAA
Division I men's basketball championship team.

HODGDON ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT AFTER 31 SEASONS

GORHAM, Maine -- After more than three decades of coaching, Paula D. Hodgdon, head
field hockey coach at the University of Southern Maine, has announced that the 1997 season will
be her final one coaching the Huskies.
The only head coach in the history of the field hockey program, Hodgdon is in her 31st
season. Heading into Saturday's (October 4) game at Salem State College, Hodgdon's USM
teams had compiled a 204-170-57 record and 11 NCAA or ECAC tournament appearances.
Including her one season as the head coach at Springfield College, Hodgdon had a 205-174-58
mark.
Hodgdon was honored recently at a celebration dinner. She was recognized for her many
years of service to USM as a field hockey coach, professor of physical education, athletics
administrator, and for her positive impact on the development of women's sports at USM.
"Paula's retirement as field hockey coach signals the end of an era at USM. As a pioneer
and champion for women's athletics, Paula took the lead in building the women's program at USM.
Her contributions and many gifts to the University are immeasurable," said Al Bean, who succeeded
Hodgdon as Director of Athletics in 1993.
"She has touched the lives of countless students as a teacher, coach and administrator.
Many consider her as their mentor and as a role model, and have moved into careers in athletics
thanks to her guidance and encouragement.
"Paula will long be remembered for her professionalism, kindness, warmth and positive
approach to teaching and coaching. Her career will stand as a lasting symbol of commitment and
accomplishment," added Bean.
Among the many highlights of her distinguished career were the 1987 team reaching the
NCAA Division III final four and the 1986 club winning the ECAC championship. She was CFHCA
Regional Coach of the Year in 1990. She has coached 11 regional All-Americans and five national
All-Americans.
Hodgdon began her distinguished coaching career at Springfield College in 1966 before
coming to USM in 1967. In addition to field hockey, Hodgdon has coached women's basketball,
women's lacrosse and was the advisor to the ski team at USM.
The university also plans to name the field hockey field in her honor, pending approval by the
University of Maine System Board of Trustees.

PRIDE BEAT HUSKIES IN FIELD HOCKEY OPENER

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Four different players scored goals as the Springfield College Pride
defeated the University of Southern Maine Huskies, 4-1, in the first round of the Springfield
Invitational field hockey tournament at Benedum Field Saturday afternoon. The game was the
season opener for both squads.
The Pride (1-0) will play Montclair State College for the tournament championship at 1:00
p.m. Sunday. USM (0-1) will play St. Lawrence University at 11:00 a.m. for third place honors.
Springfield got out of the gate quickly scoring twice in the first eight minutes. Junior Sharon
Fredriks (Pine Plains, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal just four minutes into the game, and
sophomore Sarah Kelly (Enfield, N.H.) scored with 27:37 left in the first half with an assist credited to
freshman Jen Starek (Holliston, Mass.).
USM made things interesting when senior Meredith Bradley (Norridgewock, Maine)
scored unassisted ten minutes into the second half. The goal is the 20th of her career. She is just
the ninth player in the program's 31-year history to reach that milestone.
Junior Lisa deSimas (Collinsville, Conn.) and sophomore Shannon Eysaman (Mohawk,
N.Y.) dashed any hopes of a Husky comeback with unassisted goals in the final ten minutes.
USM freshman goalie Amy Hafford (Hampden, Maine) made eight saves in her collegiate
debut. Springfield keeper Stephanie Denyko (Bridgewater, Conn.) had five stops.

BRADLEY, GILMOUR and REED NAMED FIELD HOCKEY CAPTAINS

GORHAM, Maine -- Seniors Meredith Bradley, Heather Gilmour and Paula Reed
have been named captains of the University of Southern Maine FIELD HOCKEY team for the
upcoming 1997 season. The Huskies' veteran head coach, Paula Hodgdon, announced her team's
captains following a vote by the players.
The Huskies open their 1997 season playing in the Springfield College Tournament this
Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 6-7). USM will play Springfield in the opening round of the
tournament at 11:00 a.m., followed by Montclair (NJ) State University playing St. Lawrence
University at 1:00 p.m. On Sunday, the two losing teams will play for third place honors at 11:00
a.m. The two winners battle for the championship at 1:00 p.m.
"All three are fourth-year players. They have each built their leadership roles over the years,"
commented Hodgdon, who is beginning her 31st season as the Huskies' head coach. "Each has
her own unique style of leadership.
"Meredith is probably the most vocal of our captains. She'll pull the team together when its
needed. She has excellent speed and stick work, and I would expect her to be among our scoring
leaders again this fall."
Bradley (Norridgewock, Maine) has been the team's leading scorer the past two seasons.
Last fall, she netted eight goals and six assists for 22 points. The speedy forward had three game
winning goals. Over the first three years of her career, Bradley has 19 goals and seven assists for
45 total points in 57 games. Going into this season, she ranks ninth on the Huskies' all-time list for
goals scored and total points.
Gilmour (Winthrop, Maine) has been a three-year stalwart defender for Hodgdon. She netted
her first career goal last season, and has one goal and two assists for four total points in 55 career
games.
"Heather is a more defensive oriented player (by the nature of her position). She has a quiet
leadership style. She leads more by example. She has strong stick skills and rarely turns the ball
over," said Hodgdon about Gilmour, who is moving to center back after three seasons at left back.
Reed (Rockland, Maine) was the team's fourth leading scorer last year with three goals and
three assists for nine total points. During her first three seasons, Reed has 17 points on six goals
and five assists.
"Paula's leadership has grown over the years. She came here as a rather quiet player, but
has developed into strong, right-side forward who is excellent on the dribble," added Hodgdon.
The Huskies, who were 12-7-0 last fall, will play their first four games, and seven of the first
eight, on the road this season. The only home game during the first month of the season will be
September 20 against Bridgewater (MA) State College at 1:00 p.m.
