Hill, Riitano Earn Little East Conference Field Hockey Honors
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman goalkeeper Allie Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine)
and senior back Caterina Riitano (Sangerville, Maine/Piscataquis Community) of
the University of Southern Maine Huskies field hockey team each have earned 2006
Little East Conference (LEC) postseason honors. The announcement of the 2006
LEC all-conference teams and individual awards was made Tuesday afternoon
following voting by the head coaches.
Hill was named the 2006 Little East Conference Rookie of the Year, becoming
the first-ever Southern Maine field hockey player to receive that honor. A tri-
captain for the 2006 squad, Riitano ends her superb playing career picking up
her first-ever post-season award, earning first-team all-conference honors.
"Both Allie and Caterina are very deserving of their awards," commented
veteran head coach Bonny Brown-Denico. "Throughout the season, they both played
consistently and with discipline and continually made the big plays for us when
needed."
Hill led the Huskies to the number three seed in the LEC postseason
tournament and an appearance in the semifinals. Logging all 1449 minutes during
the season, Hill finished a solid rookie campaign allowing just 1.95 goals per
game while leading the conference in saves with 209. Hill was twice named the
Little East Conference Defensive Player of the Week, earning the honors on
October 8 and September 24. Hill posted three shutout victories during the
season, including wins over St. Joseph's College (Maine), Framingham State and
Westfield State in the LEC quarterfinals. Hill posted a season-high 20 saves in
a 2-1 overtime victory against UMaine Farmington on September 24.
"Allie stepped right in and made an immediate impact," noted Brown-Denico.
"She is a great teammate with a terrific work ethic and positive attitude. Her
play was phenomenal for us throughout the season as her focus was unwavering in
pressure situations. As her career progresses, I expect big things from her in
the future."
Riitano, a three-year starter and player for the Huskies, backstopped the
Huskies defensive unit in her senior season. Riitano, who started all 21 games
for Southern Maine in 2006, posted a career-high 18 defensive saves for the
Huskies, including two defensive saves in wins over Little East Conference
rivals Worcester State and Framingham State.
"Cat has been a tremendous leader this season both on and off the field,"
said Brown-Denico. "As our only senior, she was integral to the development of
the team. Athletically, she has been a defensive force for us throughout her
career. She is a superior defender who makes the right decisions."
Southern Maine concluded its season with a 10-11 overall record and a 7-4
mark in the Little East Conference. It was the Huskies' first 10-win season and
best finish in the conference since the 2003 season when Southern Maine captured
the Little East Conference championship.

Little East Conference Tournament - Semifinal Game
Southern Maine Falls to UMass Dartmouth in Double Overtime 2-1
NORTH DARTMOUTH, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Robin Dziedzic (Palmer,
Mass.) scored two goals, including the game winner in overtime, to lead the
second-seeded University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Corsairs to a 2-1, double-
overtime win over the third-seeded University of Southern Maine Huskies in a
semifinal game of the Little East Conference field hockey playoffs Thursday
afternoon at Cressy Field.
The Corsairs advance to the Little East Conference championship game for
the first time in program history and will face the winner of the top-seeded
Keene State College Owls and the fourth-seeded Worcester State College Lancers
game played later this evening. The championship game will be played on
Saturday at a time and place to be determined. The winner of the championship
will be awarded a bid to the NCAA Division III tournament.
With the win the Corsairs improve to 17-3 overall and avenge a 3-1 regular
season loss to the Huskies. Southern Maine concludes its 2006 season with a
10-11 record - its best finish since the 2003 season when the Huskies captured
the Little East Conference championship and advanced to the NCAA tournament with
a 17-6 record.
Dziedzic gave the Corsairs an early 1-0 lead notching her first goal of the
game off of an assist from sophomore midfielder Constance Jones (Springfield,
Mass./Somers) following a penalty corner. Dziedzic worked a give-and-go with
Jones for the score in the tenth minute.
Southern Maine battled back to knot the score at 1-1 just nine minutes
later when freshman forward India Lowe (Gloucester, Mass.) and sophomore forward
Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine) teamed to beat UMass Dartmouth senior
goalkeeper Liz Fitzgerald (Danvers, Mass.) for the equalizer in the 19th minute.
Lowe fed Albert the ball on a penalty corner, then collected the rebound of
Albert's initial attempt on goal and slotted the ball past Fitzgerald for her
eighth goal of the season.
Both teams were held scoreless after the first half, despite UMass
Dartmouth holding a decisive advantage in shots. USM freshman goalkeeper Allie
Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) kept her team in the game, turning in a spectacular
performance in goal for the Huskies to force the overtime action.
Hill, who made eight saves in regulation, continued to thwart the UMass
Dartmouth attack in overtime, as the Corsairs out shot USM 8-3 in the extra
periods. Hill turned back three shots in the first overtime and another two in
the second overtime before yielding Dziezdic's game-winning bid.
Dziedzic's game-winner came in the 93rd minute of action following a
penalty corner when she redirected sophomore defender Allison Page's (Mendon,
Mass./Nipmuc) drive from outside the circle for her 15th goal of the season.
UMass Dartmouth out shot the Huskies 26-8 for the game and held a 15-6
advantage on penalty corners. Hill finished the game making 13 saves while
Fitzgerald turned back four USM shots on goal.

The win improves Southern Maine's overall record to 10-10 on the season and
avenges a 2-1 overtime loss at the hands of the Owls in September. Westfield

After battling through 62 scoreless minutes, Lowe was able to capitalize on

goalkeeper Cat Hanks (Somers, Conn.).
The Huskies were able to hold on for the win as freshman goalkeeper Allie
Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was a defensive force. Hill earned her third
shutout making eight saves, including seven in the second half as Westfield
State pressed for the equalizer.
Hill's only save in the first half was a sprawling effort to thwart a
scoring bid from sophomore forward Kara Guittar (Dedham, Mass.). In the second
half, Hill continued her spectacular play turning back seven shots on goal and
making yet another diving stop in the 66th minute on an attempt from Westfield
State senior forward Shanna Litterst (Falmouth, Mass.).

Western Connecticut held a 2-1 lead at halftime following first half goals

Southern Maine sophomore forward Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine)

However, the Colonials were able to take a 2-1 lead heading into the
halftime break when Odenwaelder converted a penalty shot that was awarded to
Western Connecticut with just over two minutes remaining in the half.
The Huskies came out in the second half and immediately pressured the
Colonials' defense, registering four shots and two penalty corners in the
opening minutes of the second stanza before freshman midfielder Cristina Corson
(Naples, Maine/Lake Region) tied the score at 2-2 in the 38th minute with an

sophomore forward Heather DiTerlizzi (Shrewsbury, Mass.) in the final minutes of
the period. In the second overtime, Hill made three more saves to send the game

In penalty strokes, Hill was just as spectacular making saves on all four
of the Falcons attempts. Southern Maine sophomore forward Leah Scrutchfield
(Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) converted the first USM shoot out goal and sophomore
midfielder Megan Stanley (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle) finished her attempt to
seal the victory.
Southern Maine went ahead early in the game on an unassisted goal from

Clark's team-leading seventh of the season.
Both teams played evenly in the second half, with the Lancers holding a
slight 8-6 advantage in shots. Worcester State had an opportunity to score an
equalizer midway through the second half when Clark raced toward the USM goal on

USM Names Johnson, Lumino and Riitano Field Hockey Captains
GORHAM, Maine -- Senior defender Caterina Riitano (Sangerville,
Maine/Piscataquis Comm.) and junior midfielders Samantha Johnson (Mexico,
Maine/Mt. Valley) and Alyson Lumino (Hampden, Maine/Hampden Academy) have been
named tri-captains of the 2006 University of Southern Maine Huskies field hockey
team. The announcement was made today by veteran head coach Bonny Brown-Denico.
"Sam, Caterina and Alyson will make a solid trio of captains for us this
season," noted Brown-Denico. "We have a young team, returning just six players
from last season, and their leadership will be instrumental to the development
of our first-year players. They each bring something different to the table and
will compliment each others' leadership style very well."
Johnson, the Huskies' top returning scorer from 2005, started all 20 of
Southern Maine's games last season tallying three goals for six points from her
midfield position.
"Sam expects to be performing at the highest level for us at all times and
she does that by out-working everyone on the field," said Brown-Denico. "She
expects the same type of effort from her teammates and is a very positive and
vocal leader."
Lumino, a mainstay in the Huskies' defensive midfield, appeared in 19 of 20
games last season making 18 starts. In 2004, Lumino tallied one goal while
playing in 19 games for USM.
"Alyson is a poised and confident fixture in our midfield," said Brown-
Denico. "She will be the link between our defense and forwards this season and
will be central to the success of our offense."
Riitano returns for the Huskies to reprise her role as the team's sweeper.
In two seasons, Riitano has played and started in 35 games for the Huskies
anchoring the team's defense.
"Caterina is the most senior member of our defensive unit," said Brown-
Denico. "As our team's sweeper she controls the back of the field for us and we
are counting on her to anchor our defense physically and through her leadership
abilities. She will key the development of our new defensive players and
goalkeeper."
Picked to finish fourth in the Little East Conference in a poll of league
coaches, Southern Maine finished last season with a 7-13 overall record and a 6-
5 mark in the LEC. Southern Maine's Brown-Denico, heading into her ninth season
at the helm, is confident that her team will improve upon its record from last
season.
"Although we will be replacing some key players in significant positions
this fall, we still have a solid veteran corps to rely upon," noted Brown-
Denico. "Along with our captains, I am expecting our upperclassmen to lead by
example and provide a foundation for our new players to build upon."
Southern Maine begins its season on the road at Gordon College on Friday,
September 1. Following the Gordon game, USM travels to the University of New
England (Sept. 3) and Westfield State (Oct. 9) before hosting New England
College (Sept. 12) in its home opener.
The Huskies travel to Bates College (Sept. 14), then host LEC rival Salem
State (Sept. 16). Southern Maine closes out September with away games at UMaine
Farmington (Sept. 21) and Eastern Connecticut State University (Sept. 27) and a
pair of home games with Plymouth State (Sept. 23) and Worcester State (Sept.
30).
Three of the Huskies first four contest in the month of October are on the
road. USM travels to Fitchburg State (Oct. 3), Western Connecticut State
University (Oct. 8) and Colby College (Oct. 11) surrounding a home game against
St. Joseph's College (Oct. 5). Following the Colby game, Southern Maine will
host its longest stretch home games playing four consecutive games at Paula
Hodgdon Field. USM faces Keene State (Oct. 14), Framingham State (Oct. 18),
UMass Dartmouth (Oct. 21) and Bowdoin College (Oct. 24) before closing out its
regular season with a trip to Bridgewater State (Oct. 28).
The top seven teams in the Little East Conference will qualify for the
playoffs beginning with the quarterfinal round on October 31. Advancing teams
will then play in the semifinal and final round on November 2 and 4
respectively.

Keene State tops LEC Field Hockey Preseason Poll
Southern Maine Picked for Fourth Place
PROVIDENCE, R.I.-The Little East Conference recently announced two-time
defending Little East Conference Tournament Champion Keene State College earned
the top spot in the annual field hockey preseason poll, voted on by all 12
conference head coaches.
The Owls received the highest point total (140) in the past three seasons,
riding the momentum of eight first-place and four second-place ballots. Plymouth
State University tallied 132 points, including three first-place selections,
while Westfield State College registered 116 points and a first-place nod to
round out the top three spots.
Under the direction of Head Coach Amy Watson, Keene State has been the
perennial powerhouse in the Little East for the past three seasons, sporting an
impressive 28-3 mark in the conference circuit and two consecutive conference
tournament championships. The Owls will look to continue their reign atop the
Little East standings as 18 letter-winners, including seven starters, are back
on campus from last season's squad that posted an overall record of 14-9 and 9-2
in the League. Keene State earned its third straight berth into the NCAA
Tournament, but fell in the opening round. Little East All-Conference first-team
selection goalkeeper Sara Joyce will anchor the Owls' defense. The senior led
the conference in shutouts (7), while ranking second in goals against average
(1.31). Keene State will be in action at 7 p.m. on Sept. 1 as the Owls' host New
England College.
The University of Southern Maine (86), Fitchburg State College (84), the
University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth (80), Worcester State College (79), and
Framingham State College (75) are separated by just 11 points in the second tier
of the poll. One of these teams will be on the outside looking in because only
the top seven schools qualify for the conference tournament.
Rounding out the poll are Bridgewater State College (53), Eastern
Connecticut State University (47), Salem State College (29), and Western
Connecticut State University (17).
